Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians. Posts range from talking about wild animals and sharing photos to discussion about new papers in the field or other biological questions.

Posts asking for identification help must include a rough geographic location, such as county and state.

Do not include specific locations. Do not ask for specific locations.

Please post herpetoculture or other pet care questions in the appropriate subreddit.

Posts about captive herps or husbandry are considered herpetoculture and in most cases do not belong here. Please strongly consider posting any pet photos in r/Herpetoculture or any of the pet subreddits instead.

Do your part for the community and report any pet posts.

So bring on the alligators, amphisbaenians, boas, caimans, caecilians, chameleons, crocodiles, frogs, geckos, gharials, lizards, monitors, newts, pythons, rattlers, salamanders, skinks, snakes, terrapins, toads, tortoises, tuataras, and turtles!

Looking for Christmas Gift Ideas for My Herpetologist Dad—Advice Needed!

Hi everyone,

This is my first Reddit post, and I created this account specifically to ask for your help! My dad is a retired herpetologist, but his passion for snakes and herping (I know it’s not a real word, but you get it) is still going strong. He spends much of his time traveling the world looking for snakes in the wild, and at home, he cares for nearly 50 snakes of varying species.

Each of his snakes has an elaborate enclosure with custom-made branches, heating systems, humidity control, and more—he’s meticulous about their care and loves this hobby deeply. He’s also pretty set up when it comes to basics, including photography gear like cameras and lenses.

With Christmas around the corner, I’d love to get him something that adds to his herping adventures or his care routine at home. If you’re a herper (or just a snake enthusiast), what products or gadgets do you swear by? Are there any tools, field equipment, or enclosure gadgets that you think could be a game-changer for someone already deeply immersed in this hobby?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely,
A desperate daughter trying to find the perfect gift for her herp-loving dad. 😊

Thank you in advance!

Practicing with my new drone by filming some alligators

Had a fun Thanksgiving morning stalking the local wildlife. I still need a lot of practice flying this thing, but I’m very excited about all of the great wildlife footage I’ll be able to get.

Found in southeast AZ.

Unsure of whether it's a rat snake, or really young sonoran coachwhip. I didn't see any black on him so I am leaning more towards rat?

Is this a Southern two-lined salamander? Spotted in NKY 11/25

This is my guess from googling... It was a tiny little thing, very wriggly and fast. I almost thought it was a super fast moving worm in my driveway. I remember it as being more pale orange than this photo shows.

I live near a creek, if that helps.

The elusive vlogging tortoise

Just kidding this moorish tortoise was being filmed by a friend of mine while he was exiting his shell after we found him somewhere around agadir. It was a very welcome find as they are becoming increasingly rare because locals snatch these up to keep in their garden as “pets”. I hope we can continue to observe these in the wild for many years to come.
