as i said in the title i love grunge, especially alice in chains, pearl jam, sound garden, stone temple pilots, nirvana, the classics but i love other bands like pantera or type o negative too! i would love to get any band or song recommendations, thanks in advance! (you can comment or dm me recommendations!)
Let me preface this post with a disclaimer: I did search through this subreddit and I am aware there have been a few (low engagement) posts asking for reviews and comparisons of these two books.
I read "Grunge is Dead" by Greg Prato a couple years ago and I loved it. I realized at one point that there seems to be a more popular "oral history" type book about grunge - "Everybody Loves Our Town" by Mark Yarm. I finally bought it and took it with me on vacation two weeks ago.
I am confused. It was... almost the same book, down to the quotes from artists. I had to do a double take when I came across two quotes I distinctively remember from the other (again, older) book: Andy Wood calling Demri Parrot "innocent, yet provocative", and then Mike Starr telling a weird story of tying a (willing) woman to a door frame as a birthday gift for Layne Staley.
I was holding off with any posts and reviews because I wanted to compare the books side by side. I am back home now - but my luggage is missing! š¤¦āāļø So no side by side. I can just comment on the fact that "Grunge is Dead" has an uglier cover, better layout, and indeed some of the same quotes.
In the end, the methodology employed by both authors is unclear to me. Originally I assumed they actually TALKED to the Seattle musicians to create their "oral history" accounts. Is it possible they just compiled their respective books from whatever they could find in different (or the same) sources, and only reached out to a couple people?
Mineš«:
"So I'll just lie alone and wait for the dream Where I'm not ugly and you're looking at me"
I got Id - Pearl Jam
"Hold me up to all whom you've deceived"
Heavy - Collective Soul
Bro, everything about it is amazing, bro. Go have a listen and tell me otherwise.
Someone on the CD collectors subreddit bought me a copy of Ten and I'm loving it. I listen to the whole album like 2 or 3 every day. It's amazing.
I was listening to it today and the transition from Why Go to Black struck me. It's so clean. Two amazing songs back to back and they flow perfectly. It's awesome.
(For some reason I can't post this to the Pearl Jam sub? So I'm putting this here)
I've recently listened to Tripod several times, I've re-evaluated this album,, do you recommend similar albums?
What were some common myths about grunge that were believed in the 90s that we now know are completely bogus? Things along the lines of Marilyn Manson's rib or him being the kid from The Wonder Years.
Iāve wondered this for years ever since I first saw this photo soon after Layne died. Iād forgotten all about it until it popped up again somewhere online.
Refresh my memories of that time period please.
What ya think bud?
This is my solo grunge band, its actually grunge revival but it can just be called grunge, google doesnt even recognize it as grunge but spotify has actually got it right! this is like a once in a lifetime thing. im not here to self promo im here to show that spotify for once does something right
Does anyone know anything about this album or the songs? Its hard to find anything online even though i thought local h is a semi popular band
I was listening to the Pixies with my 17yo this week and started debating internally. I think way more punk but I can see the grunge factor as well.
the live performances might be even better .. if you havenāt listened to this song, go give it a listen š¤
