I got the xj parking brake lever mounted in place, the counsel brackets in places, and installed some rear speaker brackets and speakers the other day. Now I just need to fit the carpet I got to fit with those new items in place
Battery died on me and was reading that the group 34 size Battery was a direct fit. It fits in the tray fine, but the battery is a bit taller and my battery hold down will not fit. The threaded rod J hooks are too short. Is there a different battery hold down or can I find longer hooks somewhere?
First post here. I'm duplicating the name of a 2018 post on Comanche Club (and I plan to cross post this in that thread... not as a brand new post, but in the thread itself). Hope that's OK. I just want to make sure others who experience this can find more information if they're searching for this topic.
So, I have a 1987, 2.5L, 4-speed (AX4), 2WD. It is not lifted, but it has slightly larger-than-stock tires on it (235/75R/15 as opposed to 225/75R/15). It was a base model, I'm pretty sure. Might have even been radio delete. I've done a lot of work on the cab and creature comforts (stereo, etc), but starting to get into mechanical stuff.
I just spent a big chunk of change to try to address the accursed "Death Wobble." IYKYK. It seemed to be mostly gone, although when I drove it home from the shop there was a little shimmy that the techs were attributing to tire balance or some related issue.
I still need to pull the trigger on balancing the tires or just get brand new ones. I have some 235/75r/15 Goodyear Wranglers on there. They have good tread, but uneven wear and they are pretty old. According to the shop, they are probably 12+ years old.
I really trust the mechanic, who I feel did a great job, despite not being a Jeep-specific shop. He runs an outfit that specializes in classic cars. MJs are classic in my book, but they aren't exactly a '56 Bel Air.
He knew about Death Wobble and recommended a bunch of things to do. He replaced the pitman arm, put in new suspension which needed to happen, replaced steering damper, installed power steering (yay!) and replaced the clutch master cylinder (unrelated to Death Wobble, obviously, but also needed to happen).
Since doing all these repairs, it has never gone back into full Death Wobble, but I can feel it creeping in at the edges. When I reach 55 MPH all the way to about 65 MPH, I can feel shimmy. If I hit a bump going in those speeds, I can feel the shimmy start to become more of a wobble.
When I'm on freshly-paved freeway, and feeling brave, I will push it to 70-75 MPH, and it does feel like it starts to smooth out and shimmy less, which I hear may be an indicator that this is a tire balance issue.
I have a few main questions:
I live in Oakland, Ca. The mechanic I like is in San Jose. It would be great to find a mechanic closer to home and also one who is very familiar with Jeeps of this age (again, it's a 1987). Does anyone have any recommendations for a mechanic or just a tire shop that is very good and thorough and would understand my issue?
Has anyone ever experienced this exact issue, or close? What I mean is doing a bunch of work to fix Death Wobble and then having it start to creep back? If so, what did you do? Did you ultimately resolve it? How?
Thanks so much and apologies for the super long first post.
Has anyone installed a third brake light my 88 Comanche didn’t come with one installed
I posed a few weeks ago asking about the “A-Premium” Fuel Sending Unit on Amazon, wondering if it was just the MTS one repackaged for Amazon or a different sender. The pictures of the two look pretty much identical. After getting the sender and the trouble I had with it I THINK it’s a Chinese knockoff of the MTS one. It’s made in China with a different part number on the package.
The biggest problem is that it didn’t fit into the tank. It’s too wide to fit in the hole. I had to bend it a bit to get it into the hole, plus one of the electrical terminals too. Also, the sock didn’t have the notch to index it property. Additionally, with zero gas in the tank the gauge wasn’t bottomed out, it was in the middle of the red, but maybe that’s because I had to bend it a little. Finally the pump is LOUD. Granted I only have a few gallons of gas in it right now, and once full I bet it’ll quite down, but I was surprised at how loud it is.
On the plus side it was pretty cheap, $92 plus tax, and had the pump included.
Ultimately I would have sent it back, but really needed to use the truck. When it fails I’ll get the MTS one next.
Just picked up my first Comanche, time to bring her back to life
I have a base sport truck 89 comanche 2.5 4 manual rwd short bed I am guessing I have the 18 gallon but I kept looking some said that some had a 23 gallon and some 16 if I wanted to switch the tank would the 23 just slide in without doing anything
Hey! I'm working on making some decisions for my MJ and am currently stuck on figuring out the seats. The previous owner started the process of replacing the floors. They removed all the metal, including all the seat bracing, and welded in just flat sheets. They also cut off the bottom of the bench slider mounts, so I dont have those as a reference. I have absolutely no idea what the seat mounting points are supposed to look like.
If someone has a picture of their bare floors, that would help a lot.
That brings me to my second issue, which is determining if I want to install buckets or a bench. I'm leaning towards xj buckets so I can have a center console, but I dig having a bench because it's a truck from the 80s and, therefore, should have a bench. Opinions are welcome
Axle swaps, finishing the fuel system, brakes, wiring, windshield, assembling interior, rear driveshaft etc
Hey guys so I know you guys are of the few and I’m scoping out this Comanche near my home and want to know what should I look out for and what are some really good/bad signs and all I have planned really is just maybe a small lift and wheels if that mean anything (I ofc am willing to work on it a bit but I have basic knowledge for that)
I just got a 1986 Comanche running and haven’t worked on anything this old. It runs and drives fine besides needing to be tuned, but the battery light stays on. Is it an indicator for all of the recharging components too or just battery. Battery is also new btw.
Hey everyone I’m working on a 2wd Comanche project. It’s getting lowered and I’m looking at some used wheels. There’s a few sets that would look good but are 17-18” and I’m worried it’ll look funny! Anyone have any pics? Opinions welcome to!
My gas gauge quit working years ago and at that time there wasn't anything avaliable, but now it looks like there is. I see a few posts here and there about an MTS fuel sender, and see their site, but no prices or way to order. But then, on Amazon, I see a "A-Premium Fuel Tank Sending Unit" that says it's for the comanche and has a few reviews. anyone know anything about either sending unti?
Rides so much better on the falken rubitreks.
Anyone know of any lug bolts that fit the rear axle on a 2wd 89 comanche but have more than original 1" long threads. Trying to fit cherokee wheels on but the dont have enough threads. The knurl size is .618 if that helps. Thanks!
Has anyone found cheaper led tail light literally the only ones I find are the oracle ones
I need a set of rear bumper brackets for an 86’ can’t really find online. Anyone have some or ideas?
Well I changed the fuel pump and fuel filter now it’s getting fuel but now I have this issue on it not starting, could this be my battery or anything else?
