Account Requirements

  • Your account needs to be 30 days or older AND
  • Your account needs a minimum of 300 Comment karma.

The only exceptions for the account requirements are if you are directly linking to a registered certified non-profit organization. For example, a 501c3 or NGO. Or if the fundraising site shows it's going to a registered/certified charity under the organizer's name.

The following circumventions will result in a ban:

  • Using a karma farming subreddit, such as Karma4You.
  • Unsolicited private messaging to push your campaign.
  • Posting your campaign on someone else's post.

Rules

  1. Posts must be more than just a link to your campaign. Be descriptive! Show evidence . This includes:

  • If this is for your pet, photos of your pet in question, with your username on a handwritten note in the picture.
  • School documentation showing enrollment if you are asking for assistance for school.
  • Redacted bills showing your situation.
  • Or other relevant documentation that can help establish credibility.
  • At minimum, please attach an unobstructed selfie photo of yourself(the submitter) with a handwritten note of your username.
  • Low effort posts that simply say to the effect of, "everything is listed in the GoFundMe" will be removed.
  • Please Flair your posts, once created. If you don't know how, just let the mods know and we'll do it for you.

  • Only 1 campaign per user. We want you have some personal connection to the campaign, and not submit multiples simply because they were in the news.

  • Reposts are allowed once a week. If a repost comes up too early, the newest one(s) will be removed.

  • Acceptable transfer methods for individuals are for crowdfunding sites only, such as GoFundme, YouCaring, etc. Individuals should avoid using crypto, or direct banking aps (like Chase). Paypal Pool campaigns are okay, but not regular Paypal accounts. 501c(3) and NGOs may use whatever method they wish. (Updated 1/27/2021)

  • Don't PM people to make requests. If you receive an unsolicited private message, please let us know!

  • Do not post politically-related campaigns. They're just too divisive.

  • Trolling will not be tolerated and offending users will be banned.

  • Don't bug the mods for an exception to the account requirements. None will be given. If you attempt to circumvent the requirement by karma farming or by commenting on someone else's post, your account will be banned.

  • No posting for other Redditors. No Alts. This is viewed as a circumvention of the requirements and the accounts in question will be banned. (New Oct 22, 2020)

  • Selling is only allowed by 1st parties directly. We do not allow selling by 3rd parties to benefit another organization, as there's no transparency to verify that the announced percentage of sales actually goes to the beneficiary. Only direct sales by the non-profit organization are allowed.

My German Shepherd, Free Bird, nearly died from sepsis this past week. Please help with the cost for his hospitalization and ongoing care.

    https://i.imgur.com/a/nHzr2Un.jpg

    Hi all,

I hate to ask for help but at this point I do not have any other options.

My German Shepherd, Free (AKA Free Bird), was hospitalized for nearly a week. We woke up last Saturday to him unable to walk, and after rushing him to the emergency vet they determined he was septic. He was immediately put on medications, fluids, and tube feeding while they tried to identify the source of the infection.

Despite radiographs, a CT scan, and aspirates of his front right leg (which was swollen and inflamed) to try and figure out what was going on, they were not able to determine what caused the infection or why it got so severe so suddenly. He was finally able to come home Thursday after 6 days in the hospital with 24/7 care. Unfortunately he is still very sick and has a long road to recovery ahead of him. He just had a re-check with our primary care vet to rerun bloodwork and everything is moving in the right direction, but even that was another $600 on top of the invoice included in the photos.

This dog is my entire life, and I would do anything to make sure he had the best chance at recovery possible. As you can tell from the activity already on the GoFundMe, he is loved by so many people. He is such an incredible dog and has made such an impact on so many lives--human and canine alike. He has been our go-to puppy socializer when fostering and just naturally seems to know how to put others at ease. Please, whether you can donate or you have any other ideas on where this GoFundMe could be shared, any help is greatly appreciated and nothing is too small.

    Thank you so much.

How to Attach a Photo to Your Post for Rule 1

    Hello new users!

As we have requirements spelled out in Rule 1 on including some sort of evidence in your posts, we've created this post for those of you who need help with that.

    Rule 1 states:

Posts must be more than just a link to your campaign. Be descriptive! Show evidence!

    This includes:

    * If this is for your pet, photos of your pet in question, with your username on a handwritten note in the picture.

    * School documentation showing enrollment if you are asking for assistance for school.

    * Redacted bills showing your situation.

    * Or other relevant documentation that can help establish credibility.

    * At minimum, please attach an unobstructed selfie photo of yourself(the submitter) with a handwritten note of your username.

    * Low effort posts that simply say to the effect of, "everything is listed in the GoFundMe" will be removed.

Generally these are provided as photos or screencaps. Because Reddit doesn't allow an image upload with text, we generally suggest the following:

    1. Upload the photo(s) to Imgur.com or other image hosting site.
    2. Copy URL or Link to the photo(s)
    3. In the body of your post here, make sure to include the link that you've copied. It usually starts with http:// or https://.

    And that's it!

Our 8 year old son Gavin needs help for his battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia which he was recently diagnosed with.

Hello everyone, we are desperate for help with this sudden situation that we're dealing with.

On October 27th, 2024, we were given the news in the ER that our 8 year old son Gavin has ALL Leukemia.

It's going to be a tough battle for him, unexpected issues are already popping up such as the side effect from the steroid treatment causing diabetes that we're now having to treat constantly.

My wife will be off work for the next year to care for him and I will need to miss work myself to be at as many treatments as I can to be there for him, so things are going to be very difficult in an already challenging economic environment.

Anything that you can do to help would mean so much!

    Beware of Opportunists!

In times of disaster, it's not uncommon for many good people to try to fundraise for relief efforts, supplies and reconstruction costs. But you should be aware that unless it's someone you personally know and trust, it's also not uncommon for bad people to use the opportunity to make money for themselves.

Before you give, you should ask:

    1. Is the donation link directly to a relief agency or is it to a middleman? There's no easy transparency when it comes to the spending of funds in a crisis, which makes it easier for funds to not reach the people it's intended to help, so by avoiding middlemen, you can reduce this possibility.
    2. Have you checked the background of the relief agency or organization you're considering? Some spend money more effectively than others meaning that less overhead makes for more money being spent on victims vs administration costs.
    3. Is the agency or organization a registered non-profit or NGO? These kinds of entities have strict reporting rules to follow to show how their funds are being spent.
    4. Is the agency or organization providing a receipt? If so, you can often use it for a deduction on taxes for the current year. If not, the agency or organization is likely not a registered non profit.

GoFundMe will show that a campaign is benefiting a non-profit charity organization if it is created using their IRS EIN or charity registration number.

Even Paypal donation accounts will show they're owned by a non-profit charity organization, and generate a receipt.

While not every individual doing fundraising is attempting to defraud you of your money, you can give with more confidence by giving directly to a relief charity of your own choosing via their own web pages.

New to r/Charity? Read this first!

    Welcome to /r/Charity!

Got a charitable cause you'd like to share! This is the place!

    Requirements

For 501c(3) non-profits (US) or a Non-Governmental Organization (aka NGO outside the US)

    • For a registered 501c(3) or other certified charity (such as NGO's in other non-US countries), the charity must be listed in a governmental web site for verification.
    • A fundraiser that is being handled directly by that charity, such as the American Heart Association's Heartwalk or JDRF's charity walk, where you supply a link on their site for your team/yourself.
    • A crowdfunding site that shows it is directly benefiting a certified charity.

Please modmail us so that we can flair your post as a registered certified non-profit!

    For Everyone Else

    You must have both

    • Account age of 30 days or older AND
    • Comment karma of 250 or greater.

NOTE: We are specifically looking for COMMENT karma. The karma value you are probably looking at is a COMBINED value, consisting of both Link/Post karma plus Comment karma.

    To view your karma breakdown:

    • Mouse-hover over your username on desktop. This works for both the old and redesigned web site.
    • On the official Reddit app for iOS, view your profile, then tap the karma value shown.
    • On the official Reddit app for Android, you can't. Complain on /r/redditmobile.
    • On the unofficial Reddit App for Android, RIF (Formerly known as Reddit is Fun), your breakdown is listed on your profile screen.

The following circumventions will result in a ban:

    • Using a karma farming subreddit, such as Karma4You, or asking for/complaining about karma in a general sub.
    • Unsolicited private messaging to push your campaign.
    • Posting your campaign on someone else's post.

Comment Karma is directly correlated to how many comments you leave plus/minus any points as people upvote a popular comment or downvote an unpopular comment.

    Credibility, Community, and You

AKA, Why Do We Have Account Requirements for Individuals?

In an effort to make your crowdfunding efforts more successful here on Reddit, some background first:

In many of the gifting and fundraising subs, you'll notice that without a certain amount "karma" and an account that's old enough, you'll garner down votes or worse, your posts and comments get automatically removed.

    Why?

To many Redditors, this place is a community built on activity. The "coin" of the land here is your account, and how much you've contributed to the Reddit community at large reflected in post and comment karma.

As a general rule, Redditors dislike the creation of accounts specifically to fund raise or to make requests. It makes it seem like these people simply treat Reddit as some sort of magical internet wallet, and that doesn't win many friends.

The other reason why new accounts are so disliked is that they're often alternate accounts of established users, in order to hide their activity from people they know. While we do sympathize with those of you who have valid reasons, this privilege is often abused by those who create disposable accounts to scam people for a quick buck.

This trust issue doesn't exist in the same way with certified non-profit groups, as you can look them up online for verification, and at least in the case of 501c(3)s, their spending is transparent due to their required tax filings which are public information.

So if you're new to Reddit, welcome! Spend some time and look around for something that catches your interest and chat it up with others and become part of the community!

However if you're here for the sole reason of making requests in a hurry, please be aware your pleas for help will likely be ignored.

REMEMBER, CREDIBILITY AND COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING!

For this reason, the mods will not post anything on behalf of any user that does not meet account requirements.

    Rules

    1. Posts must be more than just a link to your campaign. Be descriptive! Show evidence . This includes:
      1. If this is for your pet, photos of your pet in question, with your username on a handwritten note in the picture.
      2. School documentation showing enrollment if you are asking for assistance for school.
      3. Redacted bills showing your situation.
      4. Or other relevant documentation that can help establish credibility.
      5. At minimum, please attach an unobstructed selfie photo of yourself(the submitter) with a handwritten note of your username.
      6. Low effort posts that simply say to the effect of, "everything is listed in the GoFundMe" will be removed.
    2. Please Flair your posts, once created. If you don't know how, just let the mods know and we'll do it for you.
    3. Only 1 campaign per user. We want you have some personal connection to the campaign, and not submit multiples simply because they were in the news.
    4. Reposts are allowed once a week. If a repost comes up too early, the newest one(s) will be removed.
    5. Acceptable transfer methods for individuals are for crowdfunding sites only, such as GoFundme, YouCaring, etc. Individuals should avoid using Paypal, crypto, or direct banking aps (like Chase). 501c(3) and NGOs may use whatever method they wish.
    6. Don't PM people to make requests. If you receive an unsolicited private message, please let us know!
    7. Do not post politically-related campaigns. They're just too divisive.
    8. Trolling will not be tolerated and offending users will be banned.
    9. Don't bug the mods for an exception to the account requirements. None will be given. If you attempt to circumvent the requirement by karma farming or by commenting on someone else's post, your account will be banned.
    10. No posting for other Redditors. No Alts. This is viewed as a circumvention of requirements and both accounts will be banned.
    11. Selling is only allowed by 1st parties directly. We do not allow selling by 3rd parties to benefit another organization, as there's no transparency to verify that the announced percentage of sales actually goes to the beneficiary. Only direct sales by the non-profit organization are allowed.

Supporting Information Requested for Non-501c(3) and Non-NGO campaigns.

We aren't the government. We aren't a court of law. We definitely don't want you to give out information that could lead to identity theft. However, some campaigns are more successful when they have additional documentation.

    This includes:

    • Pet related requests: Photos of your pet in question, with your username on a handwritten note in the picture. This helps show you actually own the pet in question.
    • Education related requests: Documentation showing enrollment or acceptance if you are asking for assistance for school.
    • Redacted bills showing your situation. In some cases, a donor may prefer to pay a creditor directly on your behalf, so be prepared and find out if that is available to you.
    • If you are sharing a campaign for a registered certified non-profit organization (such as a 501c3 or NGO), you should say so in the post, and it should list that status on the campaign page/web site.
    • Or other relevant documentation that can help establish credibility.

Low effort posts that simply say to the effect of, "everything is listed in the GoFundMe" (or less!) will be removed.

How to Include a Photo or Other Supporting Info Document In Your Post

Because Reddit wasn't initially designed to handle photos when it was created, it has limitations in the implementation of photo support which don't work well for us. So instead we suggest the following:

    1. Upload your photo to Imgur.com or other photo hosting site.
    2. Copy the URL for the photo.
    3. Create a new post or Edit your existing one to include the URL to the photo.

Please make sure to include this, as it is the primary reason why posts that are otherwise fine get removed.

Advice On Making Your Campaign Go Further

Not all crowdfunding campaigns are the same, but here are some suggestions.

    • Make sure your campaign has been shared among your Facebook friends! You might think it's embarrassing, however your friends and family are more likely to care than internet strangers.
    • Show that you've exhausted all the other possibilities. A lot of potential donors don't like to give money when it seems like the requester's first and only solution is to simply throw someone else's money at the problem. Nobody is going to take your word when you literally only say, "but I've done everything!", when the actual reality is probably closer to "I've done everything I can think of", which arguably is NOT everything.
    • Show that there's a plan to use the money wisely. Often people have campaigns for their business ideas, but it doesn't really seem like they thought it all the way through. Tell people what steps you've taken so far, and what you're going to do next.
    • Be open to critics. If there's something that people ask about, you should not be dismissive. Provide more detail. There's a possibility that they know something you don't, or they have something different about their own experience that might be useful to you. If you simply brush off your critics, it shows objectively that you're not doing everything possible.
    • Review your own campaign with the mindset of a potential donor. Ask yourself, "Would I give money to this?" Or get a friend to review it for you.

    Questions?

Please don't hesitate to ask the mods!

... Unless you're trying to ask for an exception to the account requirements.

Charity Navigator recurring payments to charities which are no longer eligible for their "giving basket" / third party payment?

    Hi friends,

I just noticed something today that has me a little concerned and was hoping someone can chime in. I have recurring payments setup through Charity Navigator, and I haven't checked in on them for some time. I just logged in and wanted to take a look, and noticed some of the charities I'm sending monthly payments to are no longer eligible for donations through Charity Navigator (the "Donate" button on the charity page is disabled, stating "Donations to this organization cannot be made using our Giving Basket.")

If that's the case, where are my recurring payments going? Do these charities have an arrangement for like, legacy payments through Charity Navigator?

I opened a support ticket with them but while I'm waiting to hear back I figured I'd post here and see if anyone has any experience with this. I'm hoping it's nothing shady?

    Thanks!

Help Family Diabetes Resource Center of Central Texas secure funding so they can continue helping families in need

Hi, I am the social media person for Family Diabetes Resource Center of Central Texas. For more information about the issues the charity is currently facing please check out the video on the go fund me or the info below. I am helping the owner of the charity by sharing this all over as she is not a redditer. This charity is important to me personally as I have seen first hand how they help local families get access to diabetes supplies for their kids. If you have any questions let me know and I will relay them to the founder of the charity or the proper board member.

The cost of medical supplies, insurance, co-pays etc., are expensive and often families find themselves dealing with unexpected financial crisis at some point. In addition, Medicaid insurance --often does not provide sufficient funds to cover the needed supplies monthly. That is how FDRC steps in ---to help NOW--hopefully reducing the stress and reality that comes with caring for a child with Type 1 Diabetes and letting them know --someone cares and is supportive in their journey. The day-to-day struggles that come with diabetes financially and emotionally --is centered on keeping your child alive and leading as normal a life as possible

At this time, FDRC is experiencing a reduction in funding, requiring our reaching out to anyone that will contribute to our request for help as we try to continue to provide this important assistance to those in need of helpThis is why FDRC is asking for your HELP. Whatever you can contribute ----we thank you!

Donate to cancer survivor starting a ministry and charity organisation on GoFundMe. Info in this post.

    https://www.gofundme.com/f/cancer-survivor-starting-a-ministry-and-charity-organisation

Hello, My name is Stuart and I'm a survivor of Hodgkin's lymphoma, having undergone a stem-cell transplant one year ago (for confirmation my oncologist is Dr. Lam at Burnaby hospital here in BC, Canada).

I have some business ideas that I've been working on and trying to get off the ground. One is a card game that teaches Christian principles called Mission of Souls (https://thefiretongue.com/missionofsouls/) and another is an idea to raise money for all sorts of Canadian charities, including indigenous issues selling "glowing hearts" (https://withglowinghearts.org/).

I'm looking to raise money for all of these projects and to establish a ministry of my own.

Help Mia a toddler with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and seizure disorder Afford an accessible Van

Sharing on behalf of Mia and her family.

“Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by Mia-Lynn’s gofund me. My name is Maggie and I’m Mia-Lynn’s mom. Mia is a very fun, energetic 3 year old with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and Seizure disorder. Due to Mia having CP she needs lots of equipment and it’s hard to bring any of that anywhere due to it being very big. As she gets older it gets harder to get anything in my car that she needs. After talking with her PT I’ve decide it would be best to get her a wheelchair access van. Unfortunately vans are extremely expansive. I’ll stop at nothing to help my little girl get what she needs. Anything can help. Thank you to everyone in advance.”

All donations are greatly appreciated and please feel free to share this fundraiser all over the internet. Thank you!

Looking for crafters to make stuffies for our group to donate to UNC Hospitals. They must be new and unused.

Hello! My daughter and I have started a local crochet group that makes little stuffed animals to donate to our local hospital, UNC. We have verified with their donation coordinator that they welcome and appreciate handcrafted toys.

If you're interested, I'm happy to send my address for donationsn we're located in Chapel Hill. Unfortunately, will not be giving the toys directly to the kids but we'll be happy to email pictures of all the stuffies before we drop them off. They need to go through the hospital's volunteer and donation coordinator.

    Many thanks!

Support Lexi's Journey to Recovery: Intensive Outpatient Program, Therapy Appointments, and Psychiatry Appointments

Support Lexi's Journey to Recovery: Intensive Outpatient Program and Mental Health Treatment

Hi, everyone! My name is Lexi, and I'm reaching out to my community to help me on a journey that is deeply important to me. Recently, I experienced a severe depressive episode that has led me to start an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) so I can work toward healing. This has meant taking an 8-week leave from work, and while I'm grateful for this opportunity to focus on my mental health, it’s also added unexpected financial challenges.

I am diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder, social anxiety disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). Managing these diagnoses requires a unique and multi-layered approach, and IOP will allow me to get the intensive care and support I need in a structured setting. But along with IOP, I also need regular therapy sessions and appointments with my psychiatrist and am beginning work with a dietitian to support my ARFID recovery.

For one month of treatment, I’m fundraising $1,600, which will cover:

    • $700 for the Intensive Outpatient Program
    • $600 for weekly therapy sessions
    • $300 for psychiatrist appointments

The additional support of a dietitian to address my ARFID is something I’m actively seeking, as I work to develop a healthy relationship with food and address deeply rooted challenges.

Any amount you’re able to give would mean the world to me. Your support would help cover these essential expenses for my treatment and allow me to fully commit to this journey without the added stress of financial insecurity. Thank you for considering a donation, sharing this with others, or simply sending positive thoughts my way. I am hopeful that with the help of my community, I can reach a brighter, healthier future.

Thank you for being a part of my journey toward healing.

Victim of gun violence needs help (45K of hospital bills, no mobility-- Shooting happened last month in Winona, MN

    Hi everyone,

Many of you have heard about our friend who was gravely injured in an act of unwarranted gun violence. He was in critical condition and is on the path towards recovery.

He is seriously injured with fractured ribs, injured colon, stomach diaphragm, and lungs. He also has a bruised heart, spleen taken out, limited mobility for months.

IF you are in a financial situation where you can aid in a few dollars, it will tremendously help this victim during this unimaginable time. As you can imagine, he is unable to do any work and will not be able to be fully mobile for months.

    Thank you very much.

Raising money for Central Virginia Children’s Charities (Mustaches for Kids) this November by growing a mustache!

Today is a match day, so any donations until 8pm EST tonight will be matched at 100%.

My team is a group I volunteer with locally called Beyond Boundaries. Beyond Boundaries is a non-profit based in Richmond, Virginia that connects underserved communities to Nature. We specialize in guiding kids and adults with disabilities, underserved youth, veterans, and groups in substance recovery on outdoor adventures.

Small amounts add up, especially on match days throughout the month!

I'm a new father that just got diagnosed with testicular cancer. We just finished the first round chemotherapy. 3 more to go.

Hey guys, we just had our first child and he is 6 months old now. unfortunately i got the terrible news that i have cancer. Luckily it is a very treatable cancer but the cost is so incredibly high to get treated. This all is happening at such a terrible time for my family because we have an infant and my wife's grandmother is on hospice. With the side effects of the chemotherapy putting me out for the count frequently. it's on my incredible wife to do a lot of the things with our baby boy on top of having to watch her grandmothers health deteriorate, helping me as much as she has been and to add to it all, the stress of our financial stability through all of this. She is incredible and i couldn't make it through this without her. I know you guys aren't made of money but if you could send prayers our way, share the link and maybe donate if you are able. it would mean so much to us. Thank you guys for any support at all. Here is the link to the go fund me page. It has a little bit more details there as well https://gofund.me/34540779

Our LGBTQ friend got caught hanging out with her friends now she's facing abuse and possible death any help is appreciated

Urgent help for a queer afab and their younger sister escape their strict, physically and emotionally abusive family and flee the Middle East. Our friend Sama (fake name to hide their identity) is currently being held captive by their family and heavily monitored with no phone or any electronics or way to contact anyone besides their younger sister. Sama has been friends with us for a couple of years, and the only way we have been able to go out with them and be friends with them is by hiding their lifestyle and the freedom that they seek. But unfortunately, now, their family ended up finding out about them and their opposite-gendered friends and going in public without a hijab. This is an issue because their family is extremely zealous and conservative and has threatened many times to kill them if that ever happens. Although their family has caught them, and luckily, our friend is not dead yet, our friend has and is currently going through huge amounts of physical and mental abuse coming from all sides of their family; it's only them and their younger sister who were barely able to contact. The family made Sama quit college and their job and took all their money and devices, and now our friend is on their own under constant threat of getting killed because of who they are. What we ask from you, anyone who wants to help, is to raise funds to help them and their younger sister escape their deadly situation and live a better life somewhere where they can be who they are without constantly getting death threats or getting abused. The help we need is for them to escape their family and the Middle East, find shelter somewhere safe, find legal help to get them settled in a new country, and have enough money for them to settle and not have to starve in a new place. https://www.gofundme.com/f/urgent-help-to-escape-abuse-and-possible-death?utm_source=copy_link&utm_medium=customer&utm_campaign=man_sharesheet_ft&attribution_id=sl:be81d6db-4560-4416-a963-40414c0b8b25
