CB Radio F.A.Q.
Check out your local CB Shop for new items, as well as garage sales. Of course Amazon and Ebay can be very helpful.
Make sure that your antenna is fully plugged in and that your radio is receiving power. If you just installed your radio, you will want to make sure that your antenna is tuned properly to the location that it is installed in. This helps reduce the standing wave ratio (SWR) to proper levels.
An SWR of 1:1 is perfect and almost impossible to achieve outside of a lab.
1.1-1.5:1 is considered perfect under real world conditions.
1.6-2.0:1 is Average with room for improvement.
2.1-2.9:1 means you need to tune your antenna some more.
3.0:1 and above is dangerous for your radio and could lead to damaging the radios internals.
You can use one of two methods to check your SWR: an antenna analyzer or a stand alone SWR meter.
Both are acceptable, but the antenna analyzer is the best method, giving more accurate results. Any good CB shop will have one.

I recently bought the president Bill 2 cb radio kit from right channel radios for my jk wrangler and I got it all installed but can't get the srw below 3. I've sanded the hell out of the bracket and tested it with a multimeter and it is properly grounding. The Antena side of the stud is also positive. There are no kinks or anything in the coax cable. The only 2 things I can think of as being the problem is the Antena mounting location(in between my spare tire and the back of my wrangler) and where I pulled my power source from(tapped it off a cigarette lighter). I'll post some photos with it. Any help would be appreciated
So I have a new Galaxy CB and I've got it connected to the power in my truck and I have the antenna connected. When I turn the radio on, I get sound and lights on the radio, however there is nothing displayed on the channel display or the frequency display. It stays black. I can't tell if something is wrong in what I'm doing, if the radio isn't getting enough power since it's a bit bigger than my old Cobra radio, or if something is wrong.
Cyber Monday is here and I just purchased a Cobra LTD Classic Night Watch. Ive watched dukes of hazard, convoy, and Smokey and the bandit and that’s about all of my CB knowledge. Does anyone have any tips or advice to make my introduction to this hobby roll by a bit smoother?
I know keeping the backlight on, on my Cobra marine radio will drain the batteries quicker, but there are times I prefer it to stay on. I doubt it can be done but I hope there’s a hack.
The picture is the model I bought at Canadian Tire. The Cobra HH150 Handheld Floating Marine Two-Way Radio
Old, Dosy test center… I have it set to “swr set” and I’m trying to dial in the needle so that I can flip over to swr and check my readings so I can adjust my antenna. It’s being impossible because even the slightest turn on the knob makes the needle swing PAST the set point or WAY before the set point.
Bad parts? Dirty parts? It’s driving me nuts and I want to confidently check my SWR before getting back onto my base this winter and burning up my equipment.
I just pulled my Maco v58 down and set all the adjustments to the baseline according to their instructions. Also I have a copper ground rod and a solid copper ground wire from the antenna mast.
They have built in DSP very similar to the NRS in the Anytone radios. https://youtu.be/dWOK13NFgEs?si=3ajknLL7JqLTeRbl
Hey everyone, I'm a truck driver and just bought my first cb. Just wondering if anyone has any tips for use. I know channel 9 is for emergencies and Ch 19 is popular.
If I understand correctly channel 19 is mainly used for north/south travel and channel 18 is mainly used for east/west travel. I've been fiddling with it this morning and it's mainly static from everyone talking over each other on 19 lol.
I know they're not as widely used as back in the day but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have one.
I have an FM setting on my cb is that 11 meter? I have never had a converted radio before.
I’m tired of working on dirty radios. Would it kill you to take some Windex put it on a rag and wipe off 30 years of marble reds
My mom just got me a CB radio for my birthday after hearing that I was interested in HAM radio. What can I do with this? I’m not a truck driver or anything and just wondering what someone like me could do with this. I’m also wondering how comparable or different this is from a HAM radio. Where should I start?
My wife and I are in Washington state. We put money down on property in Montana and we're going to go check it out the day after Christmas. We'll be driving about 1500 miles to get there, including going over a couple of passes. We have an awd car, I have a gmrs handheld as well as a ham unit. But I bought this as well for a just in case. I would think that the cell phone should be all we need, but I'm one of those better to have it and not need it kind of guys. Anyhow, just wanted to share.
How do you guys feel about them? I get a ton of noise where i am and i cant pin it to anything in my own home so I picked up a used one on ebay to try out.
I purchased a Cobra 75 all road and have it mostly setup but was wondering if there’s any way I can power my cb system without connecting it directly to the vehicles battery, like maybe wiring to an adapter I can plug in via a cigarette lighter or even a charger cable I’m just unsure the minimum voltage I can use to power it etc.
Picked up a bearcat ssb radio and an ebay dipole this week and just made my first long distance DX on the LSB... 1500 miles away in Dallas Texas! Cant wait to catch some of you guys and gals on the air!
I need to buy a CB Radio today or at the latest tomorrow, here in Los Angeles.
setup is an ebay dipole, on a bearcat 980ssb. before i was just using 70 ohm cable tv coax and was getting a swr around 2.5 so i decided to upgrade to rg8x cable to see if that would help but now the best swr i can get is a 5.5. im at a loss now as to why it got so much worse.
I bought these radios recently and one unit, the backlight is constantly on. I’ve used both constantly for over a month and all of a sudden this happened!!
Just as the title states. Will be putting it in an SUV. Want this cb radio for emergencies in case my phone dies and I need to communicate.
I’ve ordered a mfj347 to build a vertical dipole. Looking at different whips for this setup, would 102” perform that much better than firesticks or maybe loaded coil whips?
When I mounted the antenna on the mast, I did not raise the antenna enough where the tuning rings clear the mast because of easier access. I put a spacer so they're not touching the mast. Will this affect SWR?
Thanks!
Rather than having two radios, one handheld and one stationary in the car, I'd like a handheld with the option for an external antenna and external power to use in the car.
Does such a thing exist?
I have a 2013 explorer. I have a cobra 19 mini and a magnet mount antenna for awhile but I took it out. After seeing everyone in here getting back into cb I thought I might give it another shot so does anyone have any other suggestions on a mount for roof rack or anything like that? I was going to do a fender mount but did not like the look when I installed it.
Okay, so Uniden offers no BC-980SSB maintenance manual or schematics to the public.
Poking around inside the rig reveals a 4-position port of some kind. Before I brick the rig, has anyone been successful in using this port? I'm interested in its possible use as a diagnostics/updating port.
I'm also a licensed ham radio operator, so messing with its power and frequency settings are of no interest to me -- I have plenty of higher-powered rigs operating legally on other bands.
Found it on a local store, I payed 40€, I don't know if it's overpriced and I haven't still tested it but I can still return it if anything is wrong (if anyone can link me to the user manual or give me some some tips I would be really appreciate, thanks)
Can anyone point me towards a good ressource for a attic antenna i want to build one and surprise my stepfather by giving him the connecting cable at christmas and showing him the antenna
I know absolutely nothing. Please help.
My partner is interested in something really simple. Basically when driving out of town, he’d like to be able to hear from other drivers nearby about traffic issues, like why are we at a standstill a mile long. I think he’d also like to be able to communicate with those people.
I told him I don’t want an antenna on the car and he acted as if that would not be needed. Again, I know nothing so I don’t know if that’s correct.
Is this a setup that exists? I figured I’d look into it just in case it does exist and it could be a possible gift for him.
Thanks for your help.
