CB Radio F.A.Q.
Check out your local CB Shop for new items, as well as garage sales. Of course Amazon and Ebay can be very helpful.
Make sure that your antenna is fully plugged in and that your radio is receiving power. If you just installed your radio, you will want to make sure that your antenna is tuned properly to the location that it is installed in. This helps reduce the standing wave ratio (SWR) to proper levels.
An SWR of 1:1 is perfect and almost impossible to achieve outside of a lab.
1.1-1.5:1 is considered perfect under real world conditions.
1.6-2.0:1 is Average with room for improvement.
2.1-2.9:1 means you need to tune your antenna some more.
3.0:1 and above is dangerous for your radio and could lead to damaging the radios internals.
You can use one of two methods to check your SWR: an antenna analyzer or a stand alone SWR meter.
Both are acceptable, but the antenna analyzer is the best method, giving more accurate results. Any good CB shop will have one.

I've just installed a CB in my truck and I want to make sure it's working properly. I can pickup weather band and hear that perfectly fine but I haven't heard anything on the regular CB channels (My guess is because it's at night and I'm in town) but I was wondering if there's a quick way to check. On regular CB channels there are no signal bars but they do all come on when I hit the mic button. Also they're all on when I'm on weather band.
Is channel 19 the main one for the highways on the east coast? I'm mainly in and around SC, NC, and TN
How does channel 9 work?
Can channel 9 be used if I need help when on an off road trail or in the woods, or would I use a separate channel for 'small emergencies' like being stuck?
What channels are most popular for off road usage?
What is NB, Hi-cut, ANL, etc., And when would I use them?
Am I able to check SWR using my president bill II radio or do I need a dedicated SWR meter?
From my other post, got the power supply for my new cobra the wife picked up for me. I’m Going to get a meter and antenna next. There’s a reputable cb guy not far me from that I’m gonna have the 29 tuned up down the line. Is there anything other suggestions I need to look into? I appreciate everyone’s advice and help
I turned my radio on the other day, have had inside the house as a base unit for a few years. Suddenly I can only faintly hear my receive - internal speaker, external speaker, doesn't matter, it's a whisper.
What am I looking at? I've already gone over it years ago and retouched EVERY solder joint... I got tired of going in ever few months and finding the next bad joint...
Hi everyone. I have an 01 ram 1500 with a camper shell and ladder rack. I've been looking to add a cb radio and have been trying to decide where to put an antenna. I can get a hood mount that is rated for a 4 foot antenna and I've found a mount that can go on the side post of my ladder rack that can be a 5 foot antenna. Is one location better than the other reception wise?
Hollywood at its best!
I’m just a listener really, but I’ve bought myself an Anytone 5555n ii and like to just listen out on 27.555 for DXers. I’m yet to hear anyone complaining but I’m still curious.
Im slowly familiarising myself with all the etiquette and lingo, I have a Charlie Tango callsign, I’m familiar with a few Q codes etc. But I’m yet to key up as my SWR is very high and I’m yet to find the right set up. I guess im just a little mic shy and I’m a little concerned about mixing with the experienced hams 😂. Local contacts are non existent due to my location but USB on 555 I can hear a lot.
I can put 20db 4 watt barefoot on a person 5-6 miles away....40db on that person when running a bit over 100 watts. Using a 102 inch whip 30 feet in the air.
Can't get any contacts, neither SSB or AM. Skip is very strong every day here in the US
I made a post the other day about wanting to get into it to call on my brother. Wife over heard me and got me a cobra 29ltd. Now what do I need to set up at the house?
seems like it would be almost the right size to do 5 turns of rg58 to put a choke on my dipole. my question is could you cut the bottle after to size so its just an inner ring to hold the coil in place with some zipties or does it need to be totally open inside?
I am in indy. A guy comes through my studio monitors. I make and record music. He ruins takes. By blasting through speakers...but not the Recording device.
How do i prevent this? Its went on for YEARS. I FINALLY got a name. He was just talking about how he goes by bushwacker how the name was given to him. That he lives by the airport.
I ubderstand it may just be how things are. But i dont hear anyone else. Any advice?
My brother and I often like to go driving in the mountains where there is limited/no cell service. Range would be ~5 miles. We'd like to communicate and it seems the best option appears to be CB Radios.
Ideally the CB radio should be easy to power (by something like a cigarette lighter), have a smaller profile antenna (as small as possible), and hopefully cheap.
Any recommendations or things that I am not taking into consideration?
I am just a listener at this stage. I’m based in the south of England, so I hear lots of Euro stations. They often will put a DX call out on 27.555 with their call sign, a QSY and something about “separation”. What does this mean?
What are some key things to look for when getting a cb? Just want something to mess around with and reach my brothers house. Was gonna go to marketplace route but I know nothing about cb’s and wanting to get into them. Thanks
After all you said I will create a dipole antenna can you give me a plan a very clear plan to help me make it because I have no idea of how to create a dipole antenna and also I got a little cb cobra I don’t know if it good for this kind of things
Hey guys I wanted to know if you You could help me by teaching me how to create a powerful antenna to my cb because I don’t have an Antenna to my cb and it cost a little and I just wanted to know how to create an antenna so thank you for helping me!
For some reason suddenly my 2950 will only tune 27.3050 to 27.6550
What did I do wrong ?
Edit : update
It was in fact the 3v memory battery . Re soldered a new one in this afternoon and we’re back boys .
Thanks for the help
Special thanks to @psyko_inc who suggested the battery that I forgot All about
Read title then respond please
My cb radio antenna light keeps on turning red and my question is how far should my antenna be from my radio? Also my cb and antenna are both indoors.
I'm trying to tune my CB/antenna with an SWR meter. It's all hooked up and when it's in the FWD position I get it on the SET mark on channel 1 and 40. When I check it in the REF position the needle stays up in the red. No matter how much I adjust the antenna the REF reading always ends up in the red.
I've got my plastic washer on top, and on the bottom I have it grounded out with a 10 gauge wire to the body. What is the issue I'm having here that I can't adjust it properly?
I use my CB for offroading. It's a President Bill II CB with a Firestik antenna.
Does anyone on here have a wired midland dual wireless mic (doesn’t matter if 4 or 5 pin) that would be able to show me a picture of the wiring onto the board of the mic and corresponding wiring at the plug. Already worked out it has the standard 4 mic wires plus 2 wires for charging. Going to try and mod mine but stuck till I get a picture or two. Tia!
I like the Cobra 75 All Road, for it's USB powered, Bluetooth connected control head; Compared to the Cobra 75stwx, I like that the body is bigger, with room for more features. I guess I'm disappointed that they did FM, but not SSB, and no PA.
"My Other Radio" is a Motorola Astro Spectra with the "W3" microphone based control read. I really dig the idea of building my entire human interface around microphone control heads.
What such radios have SSB, FM, and ideally, External public address?
What happened to radios that did stuff? Can I build my own? Does anyone make a kit? I know it would be illegal... But since no one cares: Is there a kit?

Good afternoon/evening/morning all you people! Does anyone have a good resource for information pertaining to all the different vintage President radios that were made back in the day? I've recently been gifted a few from the spouse of a silent key and it's peaked my interest into these radios. I currently have a Jackson, Washington, two Teddy R's. and an Adams. All in fairly good condition except for one of the Teddys is a little rough. I don't care about value. These will never leave my possession as they're extremely meaningful to me. I'm more interested in how many different models were made, the names of them, serial numbers and countries they were produced in.... etc.
Thanks for any help!!
I got my cb radio 2 days ago. Out of habit (delivery driver), I drove into a parking garage I frequently deliver to. Roof was a couple inches lower than top of antenna. It also clipped a sprinkler line. Heard a light scraping noise and got out to check.
Took it off the mag mount and placed in car. Later, I placed it back on. Swr seems normal. I just dont know what to do from here. In my area (L.A.) its mostly static at night on every channel save for the occasional trucker.
Lastly, if it only lightly scratched is the antenna still ok? It exposed some of the copper color under the steel.
