CB Radio F.A.Q.

  • Where should I buy my radio from?

Check out your local CB Shop for new items, as well as garage sales. Of course Amazon and Ebay can be very helpful.

  • Why can't I hear anyone/anyone hear me?

Make sure that your antenna is fully plugged in and that your radio is receiving power. If you just installed your radio, you will want to make sure that your antenna is tuned properly to the location that it is installed in. This helps reduce the standing wave ratio (SWR) to proper levels.

An SWR of 1:1 is perfect and almost impossible to achieve outside of a lab.

1.1-1.5:1 is considered perfect under real world conditions.

1.6-2.0:1 is Average with room for improvement.

2.1-2.9:1 means you need to tune your antenna some more.

3.0:1 and above is dangerous for your radio and could lead to damaging the radios internals.

  • How do I know what my SWR is?

You can use one of two methods to check your SWR: an antenna analyzer or a stand alone SWR meter.

Both are acceptable, but the antenna analyzer is the best method, giving more accurate results. Any good CB shop will have one.

Solarcon a99

I have a solarcon a99 that I have mounted on a 10’ stick of conduit that is mounted in a hughesnet satellite mount. Conduit is bolted to the mount have the mount and conduit grounded to my panel ground and to an exterior ground. Base of the antenna about 1’ below the peak of my roof but is about 15’ away (roof is a steep pitch), am running Messi and paoloni cable. I have been able to get my swr down to 2:1 across all channels on 11m. Tuning rings are dead center of the threaded section. I think the rings maybe out of adjustment or is there another way to lower the swr?

Stryker antenna tuning question.

CB is a Bearcat 885 CB and Scanner I was using an external Astatic SWR meter. 3 days ago, during the daylight hours I was getting between 3.5 and 4 swr readings on 1 and 40, cut the antennas down a 1/2” at a time. Finally got them down to 1.-1.8 swr. Had to cut about 3” off in total. Is that normal for that type of antenna? As soon as I hooked the antenna back up to the Cb directly I was seeing about 2 on 19 with the internal swr meter. That’s the first question. The next is, I keyed up at night and my readings were under 1. Should it be different when the sun goes down and is there a too low of a reading? Found out that the Volvo Vnl only has one CB coax on the driver side and the passenger side is for radio, so buying two expensive antennas isn’t needed.

Hi new to all this

Me and my wife love plane spotting and we have built a van to live in. My question is is there a single din radio (or dash mount if not) that can tune into atc with an antenna on our roof. I’d rather replace the main radio as it’s rubbish anyway. Thank you for your time

As the title says I got a cobra 29. my dad had it in his old dump truck, says he got it “tuned” up for $100 along with his buddys. I have a firestick and a magnetic mount (probably gonna upgrade to a regular mount soon ) My issue is I can’t get the needle to move while in “CAL”. But then moves when I switch over to “SWR” Any help would be appreciated!

HELP!!!!!!

I bought a brand new Preaident McKinley 2, a brand new Wilson 5000 antenna new coax and had it professionally installed. I was unable to get the swr to move off 7. I took ot back to the installer who soldered my antenna to ground. That did not work. I sent the radio back to President. They confirmed there was a problem with the radio and sent me a new one. I can not get a radio check or really even hear any traffic with thia new radio. I cannot get SWR off 7. President said they tested my new radio and SWR was fine at their shop. Is there anything i can try that maybe ive missed? ,

Did Mud Duck finally get shut down? I haven't heard him much or at all over the last couple weeks, anywhere from SoCal to Reno to Pennsylvania.

Can I add an amp?

Would a KL 203 work on a stock bearcat 880? I see videos on the stock radio pushing 13 watts and the kl says 10 watts max input. I'm new to the radio world and trying to revive the CB in New England!!!

Questions about soil composition and TX performance

I’ve seen mentioned a few times here that the earth under the antenna has an effect on propagation. I have some questions:

1- Does this apply to mobile applications, or base units that are grounded to the earth?

2- What soil/bed rock/water table are good/bad?

3- Where can I find more reading about this? Or what terms should I search on the web to find articles about this?

Does spray painting an antenna effect performance?

I have a tram 1499 it’s black I want to spray paint it white for use on a boat but am unsure if I will compromise performance

TEAM MiniCom

I have one in my truck, been there for at least 8 years, haven’t talked to ONE single person yet :(

1:1.3 on a 102” whip what gives!?

Has an am/fm button doesn’t seem to do anything I got if for the form that fit in the space I had. Set to the us 40 channel plan no magic screwdrivers have been used. Guess I’m suprised that it’s as dead as it is. I can hear convos especially the douches screaming about nasty stuff.

Just a vent

Carry on

"It won't be long now..."

I hear this a lot on ch. 36 LSB. What is it and why? Right-wingers training up in the hills somewhere? (nod to Maxine), a CB club roundup call? Tinfoil Hatters? Just another "Auuuuuuuuuudio" or "Hoooooooooooola"?

Everything look alright?

Seems anytime I talk on it no one hardly says anything back. But sometimes when I do talk, I get some replies. Could just be no one wants to talk or no one has their ears on. But sometimes I have to mess with the squelch just to hear someone talking.

President coming out with SSB Handheld?

Looking to get a handheld CB for the wife to keep in her car for emergencies. My car already has an Anytone 6666 10/11m with a Sirio whip and a UHF/VHF/6m/10m ham radio.

I don't want anything too big or permanent (It's a lease, so punching through the firewall to run wires or drilling a mounting bracket is out). I was looking at the Handheld Randy II/III, but I would like SSB if possible. I know that some of the older HT's came with SSB, but the build quality isn't that great from what I hear.

Is President going to come out with a modern HT that has SSB? It looks like they are moving in that direction.

Not a CB…not a CB…also not a CB

I’ve only been around here for a year or so, so forgive me if I’m missing something. There are other subs for Ham/Amateur users, topics and equipment. This sub is meant for CB, right? But like clockwork, any time I post about a radio, I get half-dozen pitches on this or that 10m or miracle all-band model that would “open me up to more frequencies” for a couple hundred spacebucks more. In most of the world, they’re illegal to operate without a license. It’s not only a matter of legality though. Really it comes down to the point of even having a dedicated CB sub when half the comments are a better fit for another. Honestly, it’s getting ridiculous how many times I have to reply with “not a CB”.

Maybe I’m missing something.

Jackson 2 or Super Star 3900?

I’m shopping for a AM/FM/SSB rig and I love the classic switch and knob style. I’ve settled on either a used President Jackson 2 or a new Super Star 3900. Can anyone help me tip the scale?
