Did anyone else immediately think of the plane crash in the series after the horribly sad Pennsylvania plane crash event yesterday?
My heart goes out to everyone involved. Such a horrific and devastating event that took place. Wish I could hug the world right now.
Walt single-handedly destroyed the meth bussiness in New Mexico.
Thanks to Walt, Gus was able to wipe out Eladio and his cartel. Walt killed Gus and the last remnant of said cartel. He then proceeded to corner the market and left the bussiness in the hands of Todd Alquist and Declan. Jack and his men took down Declan's operation. At that point, Jack Welker was the sole source of meth in the area. Walt then killed him to avenge Hank and allow Jesse to escape.
Walt cornered the market, destroyed it, and accepted his own death, effectively leading to the complete halt of any kind of large scale meth distribution in the New Mexico area. He made a bigger dent in the drug trade than the DEA ever could.
I watched BB back in the day but between waiting for seasons I never really ended up finishing it, though I know how it ends. Finally I thought I'll rewatch it from the start on Netflix - I am really glad I did because I really don't remember the details and I am completely immersed as if I was watching for the first time
The show is so good, even better than I remember it. But I want to share some impressions about the characters from my current point of view.
Walt - at this point I still find him a very sympathetic character. While I don't know exactly what the issue was between him and Gretchen and Elliot, I completely understand him not wanting to live on their charity.
I also understand why he is lying to Skyler - she isn't someone who can understand or accept what he is doing. But his reason for getting into this is very solid, it's a failure of the system, and I can understand the new sense of pride and achievement he is getting from it.
I think what he is doing, at least at this point, is brave.
Jesse - kind of an annoying but essentially decent guy who is smarter than the world he's a part of but doesn't really have many choices in life. His parents really failed him.
Skyler- I'm well aware of how hated she was as well as that in recent years she had her vengeance by most people defending her as an essentially decent person who was vilified due to misogyny and being a contrarian to the protagonist. And it sounded about right from what I remembered. But upon rewatch, I think she is a very irritating person who isn't evil but who is too neurotic to genuinely connect with people around her.
In a weird way she reminds me of my mom, and I feel a mix of sympathy as well as criticism.
First of all, I really feel for her current situation. I don't blame her for anything about how she handled Walt having cancer, I know people say she was making it all about her etc but all I see is a woman who desperately wants her husband to so what it takes to stay alive because she loves him, and her exasperation at her inability to really connect with him or understand why he wouldn't do what it takes. Very few people are able to perfectly express themselves.
Like my mom, I think Sky looks at the world and thinks that what needs to be done or what is good for people she loves (vegan bacon, cancer treatment...) is logical and clear. And when people don't seem to agree or follow this obviously good path, she reacts in frustration and "nagging". She is angry at the person she loves because she loves and cares.
But unfortunately the side effect is that people like Walt or her sister can't then be honest with her or be imperfect with her. She just doesn't get it and can't get it. Her lines are so clear that she can't just listen and live in ambiguity.
But she isn't a bad person for it. She's also not a bad person for smoking 3 cigarettes while pregnant and extremely stressed or eating a panini. She's just human and lost in a situation she is equipped to deal with. Her natural reactions push Walt into secrecy, which only strengthens her anxiety and frustration.
I really at this point can completely understand both of them. I don't think she is trying to "emasculate" him or control him although her care is in its essence control freaky because she keeps feeling like no one around her would do what's good for them without her pressure.
But I mean, i understand why Walt is doing what he's doing and why he can't tell her about it. I wouldn't either if I was him.
Since it's so hard for her to accept things as they are as opposed to what they should be, her way of talking, attempts to connect or to express support are very stilted. Things like talking pillow, or the "I feel" lines that are her essentially following some stupid therapy suggestion rather than just being able to have a real talk. She is trying so hard but it's so painfully forced because ultimately she can't just hear or understand, she wants to know so she can "set reality right"
There are also moments like the way she talked to Jesse (stressing out that "yo" condescendingly) that show just how unlikable and unaccepting she can be to everything she doesn't understand. So much pain over a joint. Her intentions may be good but she is an extremely painful person to live with.
Marie - I'm actually surprised. I remember her as this kind of a sick person I wasn't quite able to point my finger at what is exactly wrong with her. But this time I see her in a lighter way. She is kind of mental but in a more fun weirdo way than I remember. I feel like she has a sense of humor.
She can be as cringe and detached as her sister (like "look I'm using a slang word I'm down with it" and similar gems) but it's almost like she has ironic self distance where she leans into the role with some amusement that Skyler completely lacks. Like there's a layer between the Marie she plays and some real Marie who is capable of separating herself from it. It's just her choice to sometimes say a certain thing because she finds it fun more than her always expressing her true thoughts and opinions
Hank- excellent character. He's the loud obnoxious alfa who would normally be made into an absolutely detestable bully but is actually both competent and caring.
Walt Jr - I remember he used to annoy me as very righteous and smug but he just seems like a normal and nice kid now.
Yeah dumb question let me explain I'm from New Zealand and here we don't have Breaking Bad on typical streaming services like Netflix and all that though funnily enough we have the sequel movie Al Camino
I've tried a few ah other sites for free streaming but I can't get them to work very well so any advice on how to watch Breaking Bad would be great
Predicted answers:
Have I tried such and such site? Chances are yes I have I'm too afraid to name any names of specific sites incase of well reasons I shouldn't and too afraid to explain
Out of the main protagonists of the universe, which one was the most satisfying??
Walt goes out on his own terms, taking care of all his loose ends before passing at his meth lab and is able to successfully leave money to his family.
Jesse probably had the best ending in the fact he's alive and isn't broke or in jail but he has almost nobody in his life left but he's free to start over now.
Saul used his skills to create one last big con got a sweet heart deal for 7 years but decides finally the gig is up admits all his crimes and receives pretty much a life sentence but everything in his life is good the respect of the only girl he loves intact.
This isn't an easy one.
He could’ve earned well doing what he loved alongside colleagues who weren’t complete idiots or ones who want to murder him and his family.
When his character was first introduced, he seemed the softly spoken person,
He wanted to learn more and was ambitious, he even approached Walt and Jesse, and let them know he wanted in.
Then he shot that kid on the dirtbike out of nowhere, which showed his true nature. At this point, he didn't seem conflicted in his worldviews, he has psychopathic or sociopathic traits, and cared nothing about taking life.
Then Hank got shot by Todd's uncle. In that scene, Todd felt remorse for Walt, as you can clearly see on his face, when Walt collapsed in the dirt, and when he unhandcuffed him. Seems out of character.
BUT THEN, he shot Andrea in the back of the head, a single mum, knowing a kid depended on her, like nothing, simply to keep Jesse in line.
Could have been Todd is just a follower, his uncle told him what he had to do, and he just did it.
Seems he doesn't have a personality for himself, and just did things, whether morally right or wrong, just to fit in.
There's no many but for me it's when they're rigging the magnet to the truck in S5: ep 1. The guy who runs the place says to take out all metal stuff. And he says "What about that stuff you young guys wear on the end of your pricks? Speak now or forever sing soprano". I can't tell ya why but it kills me every time 😂
Do you guys think Walt might have seen Jesse as a son because he was unhappy with Walt jr? Obviously Walt jr is disabled, takes more looking-after,then there’s Jesse who can be trained, manipulated into being the son walt wanted
Throughout the show Gus is written to be this mega confident yet mega cautious drug-lord that is so calculated, precise and observant. For example the multiple instances where he nearly escaped death in and even at times purposefully put himself into, sooo sorry if i dont believe he would be stupid enough to walk into a trap set by a meth cooking chemistry teacher. The mere fact that Hector ratted him out to the police, implying Gus was sure of it, would alone be the moment Gus would have known better to not involve himself with Hector ever again, not go pay him a quick nice visit right after! Especially with the fact that even if Hector ratted him out, Hector would need all kinds of DEA agents protecting him. How the show dealt with his death was such a betrayal to the calculation, complexity and sophistication that Gus was written to have.
I just always found it’s crazy how belligerent he acts to the Pollos staff when he’s trying to see Gus or whatever.
S4e5, he storms in and asks the female manager “your boss. Gus Fring. Now.” With an absolute villain glare going. I mean, doesn’t he think this is going to make her uncomfortable, suspicious, alarmed? Like she isn’t supposed to think it’s odd that this skinhead goatee with glasses guy storms in and demands to see your boss with a seeming murderous tone?
And storming back into the office. I’m sure Gus had his explanations but nonetheless you’d think he’d be like “if you’re going to come to my day job and bother my staff, you’re going to get us busted”.
Anyway just always found that odd, you’d think he’d be so discreet, or find an enticing lie to tell her to access Gus what with the lies he spun for his family. Sorry I’m too tired to write this lol but gonna post anyway please try and understand my point
That was so mean! She knows her overbearing sister and how she was immediately going to jump all over Walt. Then he has to tell his kid in front of others during a chill, happy time right after he just saw his mom running off crying...
Is it just me??
every time Jesse wanted to be done and out from the meth business walt would get angry, why was that? mostly i mean season 5, he was sooo angry that Jesse wanted out. So my question is that, Jesse continually made Walt’s life harder but walt still wanted/needed him to be his partner, what he saw in him?
In the last few episodes/ in El Camino Jesse’s on the run. How does law enforcement know of Jesse’s involvement when Todd’s uncle destroyed his tape? Especially when none of the DEA knew about Walt Was it all Marie?
i love tyrus , i know he is just a minor character(but i love his enigmatic nature , we barely know anything about him and also the actor portraying him for that matter). but imagine if gus told him to leave him alone with hector , and he got out .
would you think he will avenge gus , or would he become one of the main players like hank and jesse and walt and have his fair share and how would he act later on ? ,or would he realise that he nearly died and criminal life is too dangerous and leaves.
Doing another rewatch of the series and I never noticed how intense and sad the scene in Peekaboo is when Walt and Gretchen have lunch. The way he lays into her and her emotional reaction that she's trying to keep a lid on is a very cutting and saddening scene.
I think because you could tell Gretchen still had a vision of Walt in her head of being someone else and her realization of who he is now as they talk hit me different this time. Especially because it becomes clearer in the scene that they weren't just co-workers.
I just finished my first watch of Breaking Bad (I know nothing of BCS), and I liked it a lot. Factoring in series length, I'd say it's probably the best drama I've ever watched. The first two seasons were nearly perfect, and the rest of the show was excellent, except for one storyline in Season 3...
In most shows, I wouldn't think too much about something like the Salamanca twins, but in a show that had been as grounded as the first two seasons of BB, they stand out like a sore thumb.
How did these two men killing 9 people just after illegally crossing the US border get no response from any kind of law enforcement besides "eh, it's cartel shit, whatcha gonna do?"
And that's just the beginning. They spend the rest of their screentime leaving a corpse nearly everywhere they go, and all I could do was wonder how the hell they hadn't caught more heat. I'm pretty sure the shit they got up to would trigger a statewide manhunt, seeing as how from the perspective of law enforcement there's a couple of at-large spree killers with likely ties to a mexican drug cartel (including the murder of a police officer with an axe).
Don't even get me started on the hospital scene either. Nevermind the fact that he drags himself out of bed and several feet across the floor mere hours after having both legs amputated above the knee, the man had just killed a bystander and attempted to kill a DEA agent that was in the very same hospital at the time. Why on earth wasn't he handcuffed to the bed?
They don't even contribute to much story motion either. All they really accomplish is sidelining Hank, but the show already had an excuse to sideline Hank, seeing as how his antics with Jesse had just gotten him suspended without pay.
Thanks for reading this far into my stupid rant about the worst part of the best show.
There's 2 ways I want to watch it. But idk which way. In Release Order (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul S1-S4, El Camino, Better Call Saul S5-6) Or In Timeline Order (Better Call Saul,Breaking Bad,El Camino)
How awesome would it be if they made a Lego; Breaking Bad? I know it'll never happen as the Lego games are more geared towards kids but it would be the perfect platform for a show like BB where you can switch between characters to complete different quests. I've seen people mention a GTA style game which would also be amazing but I figured I'd throw this one out there!
I understand Hank’s lots of moves may be controversial. But let me ask you this question.
If you have the options to choose:
Which one would you choose?
In the flashback to 1992, he’s working at Sandia Labs.
Are we ever given any insight as to around when he began teaching - around what year?
Why did jesse get sent to the store exactly?? Krazy 8 was tied to a pole why didnt he go and get the container while Jesse stayed to make sure they got the right one.. Or even better when Jesse said they don't make containers big enough for a body instead of suggesting 2 legs in one torso in the other didnt he suggest getting a 55 gallon drum instead since they were disposing of a body. I found it funny in season 5 when Huell just said I bought 7 barrels at Home Depot for Walts money lol
What I mean is….
Was it going to happen sooner or later, even without the cancer diagnosis?
This is a guy, whom I’d argue is, despite overuse online, genuinely a malignant narcissist.
He also, as revealed over the show, had been battling deeply repressed rage for a long time.
Whether it was over Gray Matter taking off so wildly right after he left, feeling like a failure with Gretchen, having a disabled son, working two humiliating jobs, buying a house he clearly DID NOT want, or Skylar assuming the dominant role in their marriage by S1 (and their sex life basically being dead), this guy had rage going back decades but also, deep stress and deep anger even just from his daily life.
Given this -
Even without the cancer as a force, would he have broken bad?
As mentioned in the title . Walter gets too much hate for leaving Gretchen because she comes from a wealthy family. Most people would say it is due to Walter's ego but I think it is much more than that. He came from a very poor family ,with no father figure , yet earned his way into Caltech and co-founded Gray Matter Technologies with Elliot which later became a multi billion dollar company. In contrast Gretchen, who was just a lab assistant in his lab, probably never had to work/fight for anything the way Walter did. She practically had a safety net over her all her life . I think it is very natural for Walter to feel resentment her for this and a totally valid reason for him to leave the relationship. What do you guys think ?
i will say one thing the way season 4 ended to me it felt like it was the end of the series, lol that plot was over and the ending just seemed and felt right, this season..... if it finished on s4 it wouldn't be a complete story for sure, but at least my mental health would be intact 😭 this shit is masterpiece, i have no other comment lol
Walt had effectively beaten Hank with his brilliant confession tape pinning Hank not him as the great Heisenberg. This would've been extremely hard for Hank to get around considering A most all the people were dead and B walt could back up the most damning evidence with facts and also Hank was a lone gun, he had told nobody at the DEA and had no solid evidence. Jesse was about to be out of the picture the one loose cannon that could derail their plan.
Literally the only way Hank was going to be able to do anything was if someone agreed to flip and Saul handed that to him on a silver platter because he couldn't let it go about the weed. Jesse was told you can't smoke that he won't take you. I don't think he fires up again but Saul has huell take it anyways which finally makes Jesse realize it was Walt that poisoned Brock
