Chuck’s speech to Jimbo S2:E4 “Gloves Off”

Jimmy says “What did I do that was so wrong?” To which Chuck replies “You broke the rules. You turned Kim into your accessory. You embarrassed Howard, who, god help him, inexplicably vouched for you with Cliff Maine. You made Cliff and his partners look like schmucks. Shall I go on? How he hasn’t fired you for this positively mystifies me. Perspective… you want perspective? I’ll give you mine- you’re my brother, and I love you; but you’re like an alcoholic who refuses to admit he’s got a problem. Now someone’s given you the keys to the school bus, and I’m not going to let you drive it off a cliff.”

Obviously, Chuck is a schmuck. But, among others, (Kim’s warning specifically) this input from Chuck seems to be the most brutally honest and true. Jimmy cannot bring himself to stay within ethical practice. That sort of person doesn’t need to be in a position of legal authority or representation. Chuck saw the dangers, as did Kim, but he didn’t heed their warnings. Not long thereafter, he is accessory to the incalculable death and suffering caused by his facilitation of not only Walt’s doings, but those of any other criminals we weren’t made aware of. Who knows how many lives he inadvertently ruined. Literally every single criminal he committed crimes to help directly perpetrated crimes against innocent people.

That being said, outside of his very not-victimless crimes, I freakin love Jimmy. I relate to him on many levels, and want better for him. As with most characters in this television universe, he is terribly flawed in unredeemable ways.

Why did Gus... (spoilers for S4-5)

... let Werner know who he was? After all those efforts to make the project as secret as possible, and yet he just unnecessarily introduces himself with his real name to Werner Ziegler, whom he doesn't even know that well at that point? Why show up at all? Why wouldn't he just use Mike to communicate his orders to the engineers, never showing himself to them? Why on Earth would he let them know his real name? That also goes for Mike - he should've used an alias, just in case. I can't remember if the other members of Gus's gang (like Tyrus or Victor) were ever introduced to the Germans, but if so they, too, should've used an alias - can't be too careful there. Am I missing something?

    Which was harder to watch?

Do you think it was harder to watch Skyler sing happy birthday or watch Howard show the faked photos at the sandpiper meeting?

    Wouldn’t Jimmy resent Mike for…

Telling Kim about Lalo and not him? I mean, that’s ultimately the thing that caused them to break up and got Howard killed. Granted, Kim had the ability to tell him at any time about Lalo, but Mike was the one who learned about it first and he knew how scared Jimmy was of Lalo. I understand Mike didn’t tell him because he knew Jimmy would panic and make the situation even worse, but I just find it weird how after Jimmy finds this out their relationship is the same and this is never brought up again.

    Chuck was right

Watching BCS second time round, and I've realised that Chuck was kinda right all along. I guess you could hypothesize that Chuck pushed Jimmy further into his slippery ways; committing crimes and messing with the law in order to succeed, by not letting him in, but perhaps Jimmy was always going to be like that because he clearly gets off on it, and doesn't enjoy sticking by the book.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but this is my first time on this Reddit page.

Let me know what you guys think

Edit: I've seen there are actually loads of posts like this, so apologies! But thanks for entertaining this one, I'm rewatching, and discussing these topics really make it a bit more interesting when you're able to look deeper into the characters and story 2nd time round.

    Marco's/Jimmy's ring

So the ring that Jimmy inherits from Marco seems to follow him wherever he goes throughout BCS and BB. It also seems to inspire him to lead the life he does and fully "become" Saul. It's like it's the totem he carries so to speak, that defines his life of crime, scams and dishonesty.

I find it interesting that when we see Jimmy outside the church for Marco's funeral, he's talking to someone who presumably also knew Marco (the guy with the big ear). The guy mentions it "could be worth a couple of bucks", and he's probably right about its objective value. However, the true value of the ring is its effect on Jimmy, the memories it conjures up, and the power it seems to have over him. We'll often see a shot focus on him fiddling with it, as if it's making decisions for him, maybe even preventing him from making changes in his life, like Chuck knew he never would.

The finale was pretty bad, right?

Bad, as in it felt unnatural. Up until Season 6 episode 12 it was good but just the last episode that ruined it abit.

Marie Schrader suddenly pops up. Writers haven't introduced her for an entire show. Doesn't mention her once in BCS. She suddenly makes a cameo. Tries to make a dramatic speech. No one gives a damn. Plus, she's a pretty bad actor.

Then suddenly, Saul the smart dude- for the sake of a performance to Kim, chooses life in prison? The problem is, it doesn't feel earned.

What kind of redemption is this? He's slippin' Jimmy. The reason he got caught again is cos he's still the same dude as he was, as Chuck says. We can't change that. And its poetic in its own right. Like with Bojack Horsemen, the acknowledgement that no matter what he does, he's still the same incorrigible bastard from the start to the story to the end.

    Slippin' Jimmy is that guy.

Y'know a good redemption arc? Freakin' Jesse and Kim.

Kim, after all this time chooses to pick up the phone and help others as she always has, in her own way. Still tormented by the guilt, she chooses to face it and rather than suffering the physical consequence of jailtime, is forced to live the rest of her life with the full knowledge she can never truly make amends for what has happened in her past. And chooses to help others instead. She doesn't need to be a practicing Barrister to help others, she just needs to pick up a phone. But the action itself, while simple is so cathartic because it shows a choice for change in what must be years of stasis for Kim.

    What a well written character.

And Jesse. Even with an episodic movie, after an entire show of the dude suffering over and over again, he finally drives into the strange and great unknown 'Alaska'. Same as Kim, he has faced the consequences of his actions. The movie actually gives closure. He doesn't know where his life will go but goes where the universe takes him. And isn't that what life is? We don't know where we're heading but we just move forward.

What a magnificent ending for a flawed character that matured so much throughout the course of the story.

And the beauty to Walter is that he is messed up, he knows it and we know it.

Does he need redemption? Clearly- no because he chose this path and would do it again. What point is regret if there's no change in action or signs of remorse?

So why on earth would Jimmy- the once normal dude who hardcore transitions into Saul, drowning himself in a world of money and sins, suddenly change and try a sudden moment of redemption?

Makes no sense. Especially with the phone call to Kim, and reverting back to his ways proving that he can't change. It just doesn't fit the character that was established.

Wouldn't it be stupid if Walter goes to jail and suffer the consequence in jail?

There's no point for that. It's not effective. Walter needs to see his family- his original motivation for making meth and see how pointless his journey has been, ironically single-handedly causing more suffering to his family by simply living.

    What beautiful scriptwriting.

Which makes the last minute Saul redemption so out of character. Kim serves as such a perfect foil to Jimmy because Kim actually feels regret for her actions. Jimmy at the end- goes full dark side and doesn't show much signs of empathy. Clearly, he's shaken with what happened to Howard but as seen with Breaking Bad and the aftermath of BCS, he's still the same incorrigible dude.

I freakin' hate the last episode. What a letdown for a masterpiece.

Edit: REALLY? I'm the only one? Everyone enjoys the ending? Genuinely surprised. Assumed everyone would hate it like I did.

Why does Saul need to take Sprolactone?

In S6 Ep1 we see Saul takes Spirolactone I need some research and its for heart problems and high blood pressure however it´s side effects like blocking testosterone , gynecomastia and overall blocking testoterone that´s why its commonly used for transitioning to a trans woman.

I dont care about any major spoiler do we ever get an answer to why he takes this? I mean until now I havent seen him experiment any heart problems so...

How to do a prequel correctly - Star Wars vs Better Call Saul

Just finished BCS for the second time and while I know it's not entirely a prequel, it mostly is. After watching, I got to thinking about the concept of prequels and of course my mind drifted to Star Wars. I know there is an entire generation of people who grew up with and love the SW prequels, but for me, after waiting several decades, while I'm not on the "Lucas raped my childhood" bandwagon, I did find them severely disappointing.

And then I had a thought... what if George Lucas were the creator of BCS? And I thought it would be a fun little experiment to try to come up with the details he would have incorporated into the show. Assuming BB is exactly the same, what would Lucas have done with BCS?

My thought is that it would have been crammed full of unnecessary cameos and connections between characters that should not be connected (like Anakin building C3PO or Chewie being best buds with Yoda). I really loved that BCS only included characters that made sense in the story. The closest thing to a Lucas cameo would be Jesse meeting Kim, and even that, while not really necessary, didn't feel forced or overdone. I feel like Lucas would have crammed all sorts of characters into the story somehow, like making Badger the clerk at the copy shop or having Combo involved with the Salamanca operations. Nothing in BCS felt contrived or forced in any way. Even Marie's appearance made absolute sense in the context of the story.

What else do you guys think a George Lucas created BCS would have? Keep in mind we're sticking to the BB universe, so no magic space wizards or robots.

    Side Characters

This is pretty ADHD, but BCS side characters remind me of it’s always sunny in Philadelphia - ESPECIALLY the non-recurring roles. The writing is great, they usually play it straight to serve as a comedic foil to the craziness of the main characters. Obviously, there’s likely more differences bc of the nature of the two shows.

If you don’t agree, what show do BCS side characters remind you of? Specifically non-recurring characters.

    Why I love Saul

Hi! Yesterday I watched a presentation explaining better call Saul and his character in general and I realized how much I love it. Firstly, I love that although he has many reasons to be upset and especially when his career wasn't going well, he never put anyone else down. Kim was making more money than him, was more successful and many times he was unemployed while being with Kim who's a badass woman and lawyer. It's very rare to see this security in a male character. He is also super loyal to his brother even tho his brother treats him like absolute shit and emotionally abuses him. Honestly he's such a funny iconic character and I wish more people were simple like him. Hes a simple guy who was focusing on his goals and dreams and when those wouldn't workout he wouldn't bother anyone, make anyone feel bad etc. I honestly love him.

I wonder what the job interview between Gus and Victor was like

    Maybe Tyrus too.

I’m sure Victor proudly went on about being in the special forces. Gus would cut him off for more pointed questions.

    Kind of a technical question

Ok, so the skateboard brothers were hanging on the bumper of that pickup truck when Saul (Jimmy) tells them they "fell in the honey pot." And one said "then what do we need him for?" They proceeded to not give Saul/Jimmy the address of where they ended up. What are the odds in real life Saul/Jimmy just happened to drive down the correct street in a city of 560,000 to end up at the Tuco/Abuela casa where the boys were? Needle in a haystack. If that.

What was lalo’s plan to get out of prison on bail?????

I understand that Saul got provided with the evidence to get lalo put of prison via Mike however lalo does not know Saul is going to get this right? He doesn’t know Saul knows Mike right?? So how was lalo actually expecting and planning for Saul to get him out of prison on bail with those charges? Which would normally be impossible.

    Did Krazy-8 mention Jesse?

Whatever this answer is, I don’t know if it’s obvious or not to most people. But I’m talking about the starting scene of S3 Ep6 of BCS, when Krazy-8 comes up short to Nacho. He mentions a “new guy” who got “spooked and tossed his stash in a gutter”. Was this Jesse? From what little we saw of him in Breaking Bad, we know he thought little of Jesse and even undermined him to Walt. So, in this short BCS scene, was he referring to Jesse as a new guy?

Was “Saul Goodman” an entity that ultimately destroyed Jimmy or protected him?

You can go along with my crackpot theory or not but OT question is the same. Me, I think Saul Goodman is the muse Jimmy always talked about, this demonic entity that invaded his conscience when he was a kid so he could move past his father’s death. Jimmy said Saul was there to protect the little guy. I think deep down he meant himself. Without Saul Jimmy would’ve been wracked with guilt after causing his father’s death. The name Saul also keeps him protected in prison. What do you think?

Can you help me find the episode?

    Hello,

Can you help me to know in what episode happens this scene:

I remember it is on the Wexler-McGill office, it is nightime, Jimmy orders some food and when the delivery boy comes, the bill is 24 dollars, Jimmy pays 25 and tells the guy that he can keep the change, so the delivery says "it is only 1 dollar" and Jimmy replies something like "it could've been zero"...

Maybe the dialogue is slightly differente because we watched it dubbed, but I guess you get the idea.

    Thank you.

Anybody have thoughts on “Parish”? New AMC show staring Giancarlo Esposito.

Is it…acceptable? Would love to know if it’s worth my time or not.

Really eager to see new, and quality, crime shows, and/or antihero driven stories, somewhat in the mold of the Badiverse. Still been missing it since “Saul Gone.”

How much approximately did Jimmy earn at Davis & Main? Was he ever considered a 'partner'?

[serious] About the Slippin’ Jimmy cartoon

The animated spinoff miniseries Slippin’ Jimmy is not very well received given its complete swap in tone compared to the original show. I think what we see is from Marco’s perspective though, maybe a look into his head and idolized memories about Jimmy and the past.

    Evidence:

    • Throughout Better Call Saul, Marco is pretty immature compared to most other characters on the show (except for maybe Pryce). See his fascination with buttholes for evidence. I’ll also add that a major theme of his character is his fixation on the “good ol’ days” he spent with Jimmy scamming and generally causing trouble.

    • Nearly every episode features an adventure between Jimmy and Marco, with the exception of one single episode, where Jimmy is trying to get a gift for Chuck. Interestingly, this is silent and in black and white. Why? I think because it’s meant to represent Jimmy having retold the story to Marco ipso-facto.

•I think most obvious, there are segments implied to be narrated by an older Marco (which might be by Mel Rodriguez himself).

But yeah. It still sucks, but it works better in headcanon this way if you want to do the same.

How TF did Saul get away with the whole De Guzman thing?

As he said, once that 7 million was posted, it sent a flare up.

They were scrutinizing him hard as to what he knew and when. He even slipped the name Lalo to the prosecutor (yes it's a nickname but still a huge misstep).

I mean he was even billing himself as "the guy", ffs.

Doesn't seem like he'd get away with it, especially for someone who was just recently reinstated.
