have lived in berlin for over 3 years and I never had any problems. I even felt safer here than in many places, because there are always others around.
But a few weeks back a random guy tried to punch me and take my bag away. It came out of nowhere. It was 0:00 on a weekday by a main road that's usually busy and well lit (döner places around, a lot of cars passing)
I managed to run away. The guy slowly went his way (I was shocked; he did not even make an effort to run) I asked two people who were nearby; (~10 meters down the road locking their bikes) ans asked them if they just saw what happened.
They said that they heard "something" happened, but were not sure if it was an argument and did not want to get involved. So much about civil courage.
Have you ever been attacked or did you have a negative encounter in Berlin? What's your story
Hello Community!
For more than a week 3 out of 3 train stations I have to use on my daily commute have broken escalators. It's not only limited to these stations, almost seems like they all broke simultaneously. Anyone else noticed an uptick of broken escalators lately? Is this like a repair offensive they are doing? It's just so bizarre to me so many broke down at the same time.
Im a gay man and Ive been living in Berlin for 1 year and I don't know anybody here ( besides my boyfriend ).
any advise on how to meet people here? Im currently not working, just learning German but still on b1 level
what do you think about Vereins?
Sorry another rant, I do not take the bus very often but some bus drivers are absolute assholes. Just this moment I saw again some dude stopping like 50m before the actual bus stop, not opening the front door (yea it was not broken, he opened it the next stop). Driving and breaking like an asshole, old people falling over. I get that the majority of bus drivers are not like this, but there is a sizable minority that are bad like this. So does anyone know why they behave like this?
I am in Rummelsburg an heard 2 or 3 quite loud “explosion” sounds and now seeing helicopters. I tried researching but no recent news still.
I'm on the 4th floor of an apartment building in Tegel and we just got trick or treaters. My German husband has never had trick or treaters before. We just moved to Berlin a few months ago. Is this something we should expect? Do we need to run to the store for candy? We didn't have anything to give to them.
Hallo Leute, where would be the best spot to trick or treat in Berlin with my little son now? I heard about around the us embassy. Is that tru, are there other streets?
Hey everyone! I'm looking for recommendations and insights on the sailing clubs around Müggelsee in Berlin. There seem to be a few options, but I'd love to know more about how they differ in terms of atmosphere and focus. Are some clubs more geared towards competitive sailing or younger sailors, while others are more laid-back or family-oriented? And, are there any that lean more posh or have a stronger social scene?
Any tips on what makes each club unique or who might fit best where would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

As I've travelled around Berlin I've often found neighborhoods that are pockets of green, beautiful spaces and historic buildings that were previously unknown to me. There are some really cool developments in Zehlendorf that came as a complete surprise, for example, and Rixdorf's Weinachtsmarkt is pretty special. I'm happy to attribute this to my own ignorance (I've only been here for about two years) and need to get out of my East Berlin bubble. What are other peoples' favorites?
The photo of the Brandenburg gate was taken from a low angle (camera near the ground) to minimize the appearance of the wall. Part of a DDR family photo album found in a garage sale in the US. Photos from 1960-1990 and mostly include holiday photos like this one when they traveled to Berlin in 1971.

hey, i am looking for two kinds of thrift stores... one for clothing and one for decor and stuff. you guys know any that are not overpriced? i feel like thrifting in berlin is more expensive than buying new clothes at the mall and i really really wanna thrift cool decor for my flat

Hello guys, I am planning on visiting Berlin for a concert in late January 2025. I found online, that the Tierpark is open 365 days a year, but I am worried, that some animals I would really like to see (mainly the Harpy Eagle) would not be visible, but rather kept somewhere inside to protect them from the cold. Does anybody have more knowledge about how the Tierpark operates in winter?
Thanks Berlin, have been a tourist for the last few days, first time in Berlin/Germany. Fantastic experience from a solo traveller, never felt uncomfortable or self conscious, had a great time, apologies for my unique take on German mixed with some Spanish, French and even some Irish for good measure.
It's a city I've always wanted to visit, having see the images of the wall being torn down as a 4 year old, and I'm glad I came to visit.
Danke
Sometimes I forget I live in a city as incredible as Berlin.
Working from home and doing nearly everything (gym, groceries, catching up with friends) within my neighborhood can make it feel like a small world. But then I’ll have this sudden moment of surprise, a reminder that I’m actually in this historic, vibrant city.
It’s always a thrill to rediscover Berlin all over again.
