Hi guys.
I am hoping someone can help me here, and i apologise if i am trying to farm connections or draw attention to my profile but really need advise and can't afford lawyers since i need to save up for potentially my flight ticket back home and for to have enough till i find a job back home too as i have no friends and family to stay with back home so i gotta prepare for plan B too. But it will truly suck because my step son is here too with my fiance and we are supposed to stick together but if it comes to it... they will follow me back home too.
And I am sorry for if i am posting in the wrong subreddit
A bit of background info: i had arrived in Germany in June of 2022 to reunite with my fiance who was relocated to Germany by adidas HQ. I was lucky enough to get a job immedietly in Karlsruhe and it was a temp role only then after that to find another role in Munich. Due to the current economic turmoil that the automotive industry in specific is facing in the EU specifically Germany, my company conducted mass layoffs of which i was a part of and they are currently in the process of going insolvent.
I have tried to change my LinkedIn profile and CV numerous times and networked but had no luck in getting through for interviews. and the few interviews i had felt like had something personal against me (increased rates of xenophobia towards arabs perhaps after the events of Israel/Palestine in 2023?) even though I had met every single point on the JD and matches the role in terms of experience.
I am starting to think that maybe i meant to go back home but i won't do so without a fight and giving it my all.
Therefore, i need advise here for now on what should my next steps. I am still applying everywhere and lowering my salary expectations to be something like 50K instead of what i received in my last role which was 60K gross annually because i understand the german economy is facing tough times and so are the businesses and i am flexible in that sense.
I am even thinking of prepping a video about myself but can't afford to pay for freelancers a large amount because need to save every penny. Once i have the video ready (up to 2 minutes) i need help in finding someone who can help edit the video for me as i am not an expert. Is there any chance someone can exchange services with me? perhaps we can help out each in some way.
Also, i am not sure what to do about the auslanderbehorde in Nürnberg, they had asked me what my plan is after i informed them of my situation (since my aufenthaltstitel expires in december 2026 but surely this is now a different story since i don't have a job that is tied to it).... but they haven't got back to me yet on next steps and how long i have left in the country. i heard i would get 6 months in the beginning (my last day at my last role was July 31, 2024) but i am imagining i have no safety net at all so i can have a sense of urgency). I am claiming unemployment benefits and the arbeitsagentur is willing to provide me these benefits till end of May 2025 and the BAMF has paid for me to undertake an integration kurs to learn german better which i am already doing and am on my 3rd week so far.
EDIT Would it also be possible to apply to universities for a PhD or a degree? would the authorities allow me to switch my visa? but then i guess my unemployment benefits would stop too...
Can someone help me here please?

Hey folks, I bought a dehumidifier, and it wasn't very effective for me, so I'm going to buy a new one. This time, I'm calculating to find the best fit for my needs, and I'm sharing my approach in case it helps some of you. If you have any tips or insights, please let me know!
Based on Engineering Toolbox, I calculated:
Volume Calculation:
For a 35 m² apartment with a height of 2.5m, the total volume is:
35m*^(2)* × 2.5m = 87.5m*^(3)*
Maximum Moisture Capacity:
At a temperature of 20°C, the maximum moisture carrying capacity is 17.3 g/m³. This means that at 100% humidity, the air contains 17.3 g of water per cubic meter.
Humidity Levels:
For a humidity level of 100% in a 35 m² apartment with a height of 2.5m, the total water in the air is:
17.3g/m*^(3)* ×87.5m*^(3)* ≈1.513kg
Which means for humidity level of 50% is 0.756kg and for 75% is 1.135kg,
Dehumidification Requirement:
To decrease the humidity level to approximately 50%, your dehumidifier should be able to collect at least:
1.135kg−0.756kg≈0.379kg(or379g)
Additionally, since an adult typically produces around 0.4 liters (400 grams) of water vapor per day, the dehumidifier should ideally manage at least twice this amount to offset continuous humidity generation. Therefore, a capacity of at least 750 grams/day is a practical choice.

Question:
One thing I don’t quite understand is how some dehumidifiers are rated at 10L/day yet claim to be suitable for 15-20 m² rooms , while others with a rating of just 0.35L/day say they cover up to 30 m². The second example seems more realistic, but the first is a bit confusing to me.
Hey everyone,
I’m urgently looking for a lab in Berlin where I can get my iron blood levels tested. I currently don’t have active health insurance; I’ve applied for "freiwillige" insurance, but I’m still waiting for approval, and in the past, I was declined for tests due to the lack of German insurance coverage.
I’m totally fine with paying out of pocket if that’s possible. Does anyone know of a lab that would accept someone in my situation? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Hi, I have recently subscribed for Berlin Abo (29 euro per month for AB zones) and today I received my physical card by post. I am trying to add it to mobile apps but so far failed. Is there a way to do this? On BVG app under Profile Data there is a section called Kundenkarten-Nummer which accepts a 7-digit number but my kundennummer or vertragsnummer actually have more digits.
We are in a tight budget. We like history, sightseeing, going to one museum, Christmas market and restaurants. What would you recommend?
I’m really struggling learning German, my friends are international, my job is international and everything I do is in English.
I go to German classes three times a week and have a speaking tutor but it’s still not enough.
I have a wild idea that maybe a new job in German might help, any thoughts?
Also open to volunteering.
Has anyone tried this tactic, am I crazy, or being entitled?
Hi folks,
I’m pretty tall (2,03m) and of course struggle find fitting pants. So I let them be made in another country sometimes, but the shipping from there is quite expensive.
Does somebody know a tailor that will make casual, non suit pants after a model I’d give them?
I've tried to register as unemployed as tomorrow is my first day of unemployment and I'd like to start getting unemployment benefits as soon as possible. But the link on arbeits agentur site (via bund id) where we register with identification is not available/broken --- is there another way to do this?
Dear Berliners,
I got a termination notice from my employer because of operational reasons with a settlement proposal. It's a big multi national company but does not have a works council in Germany. My questions are:
I understand that I can approach a lawyer within 3 weeks and they can either help me get my job back or negotiate a better package. What happens while the legal proceedings are on? Do you continue to be employed and receive salary?
I am on a blue card and eligible for ALG1. It seems LEA is now giving 3 months to field a new job before switching you to a 1 year opportunity card. Can you receive ALG1 while on opportunity card?
Thanks in advance 🙏
I usually sublet my studio in Friedrichshain for 3-6 months each year as I have seasonal jobs. This year I started the sublet process a bit early for December-March. But compared to the previous years, I got a lot less people reaching out and all the 3 people I offered the sublet to went for another flat at the end. The price, duration, WG-gesucht ad, and the apartment itself remained 100% the same. In the past I’d get 30+ people messaging me in 24 hours, but now it’s not even 10 in a couple days. I also never had people saying no to the sublet offer. My friend who was subletting had the same issue.
Any idea what might have changed in the market? Are there fewer people looking for temporary rentals or are there more options and prices have gone down? I just find it very surprising and interesting to see this happen in Berlin.
Thanks!
Hi there, I have a job offer in Berlin starting 1 Feb 2025 (flexible on start date) for 45.000€. I am Luxembourgish and my husband is British. (I am sorry to be moving to your lovely city and taking yet another apartment. But if we stay in the USA it will kill us.)
Obviously it will be very difficult for us to find a long-term flat until we both are employed and have a few months of pay. I’ve been told the best plan is to book a furnished apartment with Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for a few months. We are open to any neighbourhood for this (as long as I can get to Mitte for work).
I have a few questions regarding our situation:
What does my British partner say at the border? Can he say he’s entering with the intent of immigrating?
If we are arriving in late January, how many months should we be booking accommodation for?
How long will it take for my husband to obtain his residence permit? (How long to get an appointment? How long to process after appointment? Are things quicker during post-holidays wintertime?)
At his residency appointment, will need to demonstrate sufficient financial support? (Does the flat need to be a certain size? How many months lease will suffice? Will they ask for evidence of savings?)
What is the bare minimum you would recommend we arrive with in savings? (I understand this is difficult to guess without knowing the full situation.)
Any recommended resources for finding a short-term furnished flat?
I apologise if these questions have been asked before. It is difficult to know what advice is correct when applying under EU law.
TIA for your advice!
Recently visited Berlin, safe to say I fell in love with it. What are you guys experiences living there ? Ps: currently living in Heidelberg, undergoing the recognition process to work as a dentist
I've recently been laid off from work and I've been serving notice until today. As of tomorrow I will officially be without a contract. So far in any applications I have mentioned that I was employed (which is technically true since my contract was active until yesterday) I am nervous about how it will come across once I update my status on my resume/LinkedIn saying I'm currently without a job. Would that create bias (conscious/unconscious) among recruiters and hiring managers in Berlin? The job market is not the best and the competition for jobs is very tight right now ---- want other thoughts/experiences around this.
I am about to sign contract with howoge. The apartment looked good. When I saw the reviews on trust pilot the reviews were bad. How was your experience with HOWOGE. Should we go ahead with the apartment?
Hi guys,
I moved to Berlin 3 weeks ago. I found a place on Housing Anywhere. I found out that I not only have the smallest room in the apartment, but also am paying more rent than others? 100 euros more in some cases… (seriously, my room is a shoe box compared to the other rooms, and they’re paying less???) I have seen some great places around and some look like they’re empty as well, so my questions are:
If we see a nice building, how can we ask if they have anything for rent there? Why don’t Berliners do the for rent signs?
Why are studio apartments so expensive? I can pay €700 max. If any of yall know any studios for this price; let me know.
How can I find a decent place where I have big enough room at least? Website suggestions and others tips would be appreciated.
TIA
As the title says, I'm wondering how Berlin nightlife is for tourists. Me and my friends currently planning our group holiday for next summer and deciding where we want to go. Top picks right now is Berlin or Copenhagen. Id personally prefer Berlin because I'm learning German and would like to visit Germany a bit more. I've been to Cologne last year and had a great time, met some cool people there, and am wondering if Cologne would be a similar experience.
I am Irish, 21M and have mediocre german at best, but am always working on my everyday conversational speech. Wondering will I be treated like the stereotypical clueless American.
Hi everyone! I recently applied for a part-time job at an Amazon warehouse in Berlin. I got a text message saying they’d reach out, but I haven’t received a call from them yet. For some context, I’m female, in my early 30s, and pretty petite (52 kg). However, I do work out regularly, so I’m wondering if my fitness routine might help with the physical demands of the job.
For those of you who have experience working in an Amazon warehouse, what’s the work actually like? Is it as physically intense as people say? Since I’m smaller in build, I’m curious if it’s something I’ll adjust to easily or if there are particular tasks that might be challenging. Any insights on the hiring timeline and what to expect from the work would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Hey fellow travelers,
I’m flying from Berlin (BER) to Turkey with SunExpress soon, and I’m planning to travel with just hand luggage. According to the SunExpress website, they allow only one piece of hand luggage (8kg max), with no additional small personal item like a backpack or a small bag.
Has anyone recently flown with SunExpress from BER and can share their experience with this rule? Do they actually enforce it strictly, or is there any flexibility with having a small extra bag (like a laptop bag or small backpack) along with the main carry-on?
Thanks for any insights you can share – I want to avoid any surprises at the airport!
Hi Folks,
I am a non-eu masters student in Berlin and I will graduate in 2 months. I got a job offer and applied Blue Card on 7th of October by using online application form (My contract starts on 01.11.2024). I read lots of posts and generally the people say you should get a response in a few weeks. Its been more than 3 weeks and I did not get any response which states the appointment time.
I do not mean getting the blue card itself, but getting an appointment after sending the online application. Do you have any experience about the current processing times of Blue Card in Berlin? Thank you to all in advance!
Dear reddit community,
we will soon have an appointment for handover of our new apartment built by BUWOG. Could you please recommend a good Bausachverständiger in Berlin that will record all problems in the apartment and check that everything is according to Bauleistungsbeschreibung?
Thank you in advance!
Hi everyone!
Im looking for a master's program in Fashion, where each semester is spent in a different city. I'd love for the locations to be Paris, London, Milan and Berlin. Has anyone come across a program that offers this, or something similar?
If not, I'd also be interested in any recommendations for top-tier, free (or low-cost) fashion master's programs that might have an international focus or offer exchange opportunities.
Thanks so much for any help!
Hi, we have created a WhatsApp group to play football matches in Berlin. Let's join and organize something together https://chat.whatsapp.com/IpsCLxOKLf9GmjcDVTOXsK
Basically the title.. Endless repairs. Same line can be closed for maintenance several times a year in same/overlapping segments. After 8+ years in Berlin I dare to say that it seems like a pattern, that those repairs have no meaning. If for years, many lines can be closed for prolonged periods, every several months, in the same segments. Maybe.. Just maybe.. The issues aren't repaired (in one way or another)
It doesn't have to be like this.
I can imagine some money laundering schemes. After all - these companies get huge subsidies for all their hardship.
So, does anyone know if someone is watching/investigating their activities?

We have been living in our current apartment since December 2021. Our landlord is not in Berlin and is rarely available. Despite our asking for the invoice for additional costs (Nebenkostenabrechnung) multiple times throughout 2023 and 2024, we never received this from our landlord. He insisted that he sent it/will send it but we never received anything for the year 2022.
Recently, we had a break-in in our basement and our Kellerraum door was damaged. We had to convince our landlord that it is his responsibility to pay for the lock change. And now he remembered that the additional costs for 2022 have not been settled.
We did our research and told him that he should have sent us the invoices before 31 Dec 2023 for the year 2022 (or at least the beginning of 2024), and now it is too late. He says it is okay if we don't pay the 2022 costs but he will now increase the rent by 15%.
Is this something we can contest? Or should we just pay the invoice for 2022 now?
New to Berlin. I'm looking for recommendation on Halloween trick or treat spots around Berlin for my 5 year old. Are there any districts/places to stay away from?
Hello! I recently moved here to Berlin from Colorado with my partner. We are in a short-term lease agreement right now, but we might have found a long-term solution. Located in 12437 Treptow is a tiny attic apartment for rent. It is on the fourth floor (no elevator), it has a sink, small stove, and shower + toilet. The space is barely big enough to fit 1 bed, let alone something for the 2 of us (think, tiny bedroom with slanted ceiling + a toilet).
They are asking for 500 on the contract + 200 cash off the record per month (sketchy?). We visited the space so it is legit, but hardly livable. Is it legal to charge 700 for a 15m2 “apartment”?? Do we just have to bite the bullet because finding an apartment is so difficult? I would like to know based on size and the location if this seems like a good deal or if we are being screwed. Is it fair to try and ask for simply 500, because that makes the most sense with the space provided?
Let me know what you think because we are stuck!! I would love to know the legality as well of price-to-space ratio. Thank you!!
A while ago someone posted on here about a tool library/community crafts space. Basically a place where you could go that had sewing machines, tools, and other like DIY things that you could rent or pay to use there. Does anyone have any more info on this? There was a website posted but I don't remember any other details about the name.
This is something I still haven't tried. But for the next trip, it is definitely a goal.
Where do we get the best Mettbrötchen
