For many PC users, Linux is simply out of reach. You see screenshots of it. You see it has an awesome game library. You see it has tons of free software, no price tag, and excellent performance. The only problem is, you don't know how to get from where you are now to what those screenshots are portraying. You may not know where to get it, how to get it, what to do once you get it, and how to use it once you get it. The goal of this subreddit is to serve as your "bridge". This subreddit is populated with a diverse crowd of Linux users. The one thing they have in common, though, is experience and wisdom. You're not alone, everyone was new to Linux at some point. This is a subreddit dedicated to discussion between the newbies or Lin-curious, and the Linux gurus. Ask away!

I tried "asking" that on the internet and I got results about using apps like TeamViewer or setting up a NAS and other random stuff.
There was also a Windows tutorial about using VLC.
My question is this: is there a way to set up my pc/phone so I can access videos/photos without having to share screen or use the phone as a remote control?
My computer is stuck at the living room and sometimes I want to access my stuff but someone else is watching the tv.
Thanks for your time.
Sorry for the long question... A little history...Years ago (back during the 90's) I was hired by an exiting web firm to create sites and content on their windows server. Back then it was an NT box and a not much was required to create and host sites (yeah FrontPage and Notepad). Move forward a few years and the co-location server price went through the roof and I had to migrate a number of live accounts into a shared hosting environment, I SHOULD have moved to Linux then, (maybe 2006, don't recall exactly) but we went into a Windows/Plesk host on goddammdaddy Plex is completely fucked at this point (Can't clone backup databases anymore and using SSMS is a joke due to lack of permissions). Been using DNN (formerly Dot Net Nuke) for content management with MSSQL server for dynamic data. My 30 or so sites use about 70 GB of drive space and about 10 GB a month in traffic. I use serval Databases, mainly one for each instance of DNN and a few for custom client content. (I have to do this on GD since they throttle the SIZE of databases - not the quantity - and they don't let me shrink them anymore.)
I will need to be able to run ecommerce sites, add SSL certs, ftp access, I will need be able to edit DNS records - I have a separate email service - and the clients will need to have access to certain editing and database reporting functions. Need to be able to keep track of domain names, renew, add etc. I also use out of the box themes which make site creation a breeze.
I currently create custom forms and templates to make and access the reports. I have a few years of using Linux distros on my spare laptops, my music machine and my Samba/NAS box, but it would be nice to also have a GUI in addition to CLI access to the service.
My customers are mostly mom and pop clients and non profit agencies, so costs are important. I'm also very old (born in the Eisenhoover administration), so I'm not sure if I can deal with something that has a steep learning curve. I am hoping to be able to make a seamless switch before the end of this year.
My question is what do you recommend for migrating from a Windows environment to a Linux web hosting service?
I hear the horror stories about NVIDIA cards and the extra maintenance headaches you get managing them on Linux. I have been a Fedora and Ubuntu user for about 2 years. I hate troubleshooting issues, I prefer things that just work. I hear AMD cards are easier to live with, but their AI chops aren't great. Many of the projects I track only enter talk about CUDA.
If I'm building a new PC with the intention of doing more AI work and more gaming, what would you recommend and why?
I have two devices and one software:
- Fingerprint Scanner Device (FSD)
- Laptop with Fedora 37 as host and Windows 10 as a guest.
- Fingerprint Scanner Software (FSS) running inside Windows 10.
Problem is:
- How do I make the connection between FSD and FSS so that I can sync data?
- Should I use NAT or Bridge?
Scenario:
- FSD needs the IP of the machine which is running FSS.
- Whose IP should I give? Host OS's IP or Guest OS's IP?
Should I create a new ssh key or can I use the existing ssh key to connect to github.
I have a pendrive connected to my router Livebox Fibra and I can't access to it with the file manager of my Linux Mint. I can actually access with my phone's file manager. Any suggestions?
Can't access smb://liveboxfibra/USB

What is the difference ?
Hello, I have a problem that maybe someone already face:
I have 2 Ubuntu's 20.04, I started to work with it when I accidentally delete windows, and then installed ubuntu where W was.
Now, I have 1 of the ubuntu's working and the other just occupying space, what strategy should I follow to delete one of the S.O's and get the other untouched?
These 2 S.O's are installed in 2 different physical disks, so I can easily detect who is who.
Hello! I have a lenovo x1 carbon, older generation. I have tried Kali, Lithium & MX. I'm not inexperienced with technology but quite above Linux. I'm trying to find the most flexible distro for me. so far of the three mentioned i have liked the minimal of Kali, have also played around a bit with its pre-installed tools. but lately I've been running Lithium for a few weeks. I had to mess around a lot to first get things sorted out, among other things, in some of the software I use. this is one thing i can bother about. I like to be able to change some of the appearance, use simple video editing, work with python and maybe play a bit on some retro pixel games. do you dear friends have any advice on what you think I should try? I also use the computer with slack, notion, teams and other similar things at work.
How to Move xubuntu to ssd from usb?
Wanted to install xubuntu on my dell e6400 and used unetbootin to load the iso onto a usb drive. Didn’t know it would be this hard to transfer the is onto my ssd and I really don’t want to have to have to usb drive in my computer every time I boot it. Already have deleted windows 7 os off of it so I cannot download a partition wizard or anything. What can I do?
So awhile ago I was running windows and kept on getting Bsod’s even after reinstalling windows. I assumed there was something wrong with windows itself so that when I reinstalled it locally it just didn’t fix itself. So I decided to install Ubuntu to se if it would fix the problem! And it did for the most part except for the occasional time that Firefox and and browser I had would crash. one day I had a windows 10 vm running and Firefox running in the background, the vm got a bsod and Firefox crashed at the same time and that is when I realized it was probably a hardware issue. most of the bsod’s were kernel security checks failed. Then today I got stuck on this screen. Any recommendations other than just get new ram?
Whenever i plug in my wireless mouse, wifi connection is lost randomly. This never happened before i got this laptop. Without the mouse, the connection is stable.
Dmesg shows no interesting information (for me at least). Connection to AP lost, then tries to reconnect, sometimes it is successful in one try, sometimes needs more. Mouse connection is stable.
More info on the system:
Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78) (lspci)
Bluetooth module: Intel Corp. Bluetooth wireless interface (this shows up in lsusb, should be in the same pci card though)
Kernel ver.: 5.19.9-arch1-g14-1 (with kernel patches for asus laptops)
Using NetworkManager ver. 1.40.0-1

SO I've hopped distros a couple of times now, and my latest trip is to Manjaro (Which I am loving btw). I installed Steam and I am trying to set up my HDD as a library for my games as i have them installed on the drive already. Steam keeps telling me the drive needs to have execute permissions. Here's the the thing though, it does. I checked and I am the owner of the drive, not root. So how do I get steam to allow this drive to be used as a steam library?
I've been dealing with updating the cert being used on a few linux servers. I am a windows guy and trying to figure out how to update my linux and apache servers.
I can't wrap my head around the use/requirement of a .key or .keystore. I have a wild card cert that is already issued and was renewed so I do not have the original CSR. I can create a new CSR and go through the process of reissuing and reapplying the cert to every server using the wildcard cert. Is there a way to apply the cert without creating a CSR from the apache server? On specific example is PWPush. I inherited PWPush and it has a .key file which based on my research it is generated at the time you generate the CSR. How can I get PWPush to take on the new cert without the process of recreating the CSR?

Lets say I want to put together a kernel, an init system and some custom tools and for this I use the ubuntu toolchain so I dont recompile my own. Would that be considered an Ubuntu based distro? I am not even taking the same file-system hierarchy not apt package manager.
looking to expand mine, currently i have.
I'm a Windows user but I want to migrate to Linux. I use this PC mostly for gaming and what's the best distro for it?
I have a RX6600 GPU and a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, is there any problem with AMD drivers?
I am a newbie. i want to switch from windows to linux because i want to be close to OS and i have read it is really helpful for programmers. I haven't used ubuntu, so i have no experiance in linux. I know little bash, i use it during web-dev projects, for node.js and git.
I read on arch wiki that there is lot of learning involved, i am ready to learn. It mostly refered to what should i do after i install arch but what i must know before installing arch?
I am a student and i do programming in c++. Any advice or resources would be very helpful.
CLI excites me and i love writting commands even though i don't know much yet.
what should i do? should i learn more before switching, if yes then what?
please help! Thank you.
Hello,
I usually prefer linux for my daily drive and always use it on my computer for programming. 2 months ago my old employer gave me a MacBook Pro (M1 Max) but I decided to quit my job for more salary.
My employment contract binds me for the next 5 months before I finally switch to my new emplyer. My new employers does not provide me a macbook for some weird reasons like
When I asked him, he allowed me atleast to install Linux as Dual Boot on my new system. I am pretty happy about that because I really like Linux more than mac os but there are some points...
TLDR:
I am forced to use PC as my daily driver for work and I am worried about performance on desktop performance with intel+nvidia on gnome with 2x 144hz 4k displays. Does some one have experiencec to share with me?
Sorry for my englisch.. sadly not my native language but I hope you can understand me :)
Just wondering...
I was wondering if the android system actually protects it's users from get their data collected by the mobile brand manufacturers. I mean, in a sense that it does not leave room to, for example, collect the password i'm typing in. Or maybe so privacy policy imposed by google that ensures that mobile manufacturers are not allowed to do something like that. I'm asking here because Android is a linux based system so... But if there is a better reddit to ask, please send me.
I'm interested in a project to make my own DE, and I have literally no idea where to start.
This is 100% just to learn, so if advice starts with "build a display server" I'll start there.
Hi. I am constantly connecting to different networks to configure AV devices for my customers. There is a gui app I use in Windows called "Simple IP Config". It allows you to store, name and trigger different IP configurations. Quite helpful a year later when you are back on the site and don't remember what subnet etc you are supposed to be on. Is there a cool Linux app like this that you can recommend?
How can I add automatic screen brightness to Linux mint?
