Ask a Russian!
Privet!
This place is meant to be a Q&A subreddit for everyone who wants to pose questions and requests to Russian speakers.
It's Russian speakers, not just Russians, because Russia is a multinational and multiethnic state and because there are many other countries where people speak the Russian language. The sub was created by a Russian speaker from Ukraine. We also have some people from Belarus, Kazakhstan and other ex-USSR countries where Russian is widely spoken. All of them will be glad to answer your questions. Question from Russians to Russians are allowed too.
And hey, if you're into instant messengers, check out our Discord! Contents include: language learning, expat talk, edgy memes, anime, videogames, and flame wars from time to time.

Compared to Russia, what makes that place have this rate ?
"Chechnya is a republic of Russia. In the past, aid organizations have documented that around 80% of households in Chechnya were below the poverty line set by the Russian Federation. The official unemployment rate was 85%."
Do you support Putin? if you don't support him, why don't you support him and which party do you think is better and why.
I've seen some silly comments here and I cannot tell if they are westoid LARPers (dreaming of communism at home) or actual former Soviet citizens who genuinely think things were better under the dictatorship of the proletariat.
Is this LARPing? Is this a significant minority?
"Soviet youth camps were great!" "Agriculture was better in the 1970s when skilled workers had to "volunteer" for farm work"
Note that I understand why Putin is liked and why Russia is stable now - unlike in the Soviet and early 1990s, Russia now has upward mobility.
There is a community of Old Believer Russians in the Danube Delta region which came over during the Czarist Era (17th and 18th century) due to persecutions. In Romania, we call them “Lipoveni”. They lived isolated lives until the communist era, but even today many speak their language. Would it be easy for a modern day Russian to understand them? Btw, many other schismatic Russian sects/people also sought refuge in the Kingdom of Romania (Skoptsy, Tatars, White Russians…etc)
If I get the Shared Value Visa which lets me live in Russia for 3 years, but during the 3 years I change my mind and decide to come back to the US, could I be grilled by the US authorities on why I got such a Visa in a country at odds with the US and then get stripped of my US citizenship, since by applying for such a Visa I was showing that my values doesn't align with that of US?
By the way I am a naturalized US citizen (originally from a non-Russian foreign country).
Hi I'm an American citizen who wants to travel to Russia and will be staying with my grandfather in Moscow but I'm not sure if I should get a tourist visa or private because my plan is to fly to Lithuania walk thru Kaliningrad then fly to Moscow and I'd also want to train to Petersburg what is my best choice thank you also If anyone just has some tips for going and the process very appreciated
I am from Egypt and i got a job offer remotely for a russian company.. What is the work culture in russia in general and what to expect?
Do Russians participate in NNN?
Okay, so I live in Canada, where a lot of people now are naming their children... well just google "tragedeigh" and you'll understand.
People specifically in Russia, who have had children after the year 2000, what names have you seen? I know Russians have many fewer first names in use, like half of them are actually Greek, and thankfully they can only spelled one way, but I'm wondering:
Has there been any resurgence in purely Slavic first names?
Has been any resurgence in the names you might see before 1917? (Like Prokop, Sefora, Timofey, etc)
Have there been any really strange ones you've seen?
Are you sticking to the common names for your children or going for something else?
Hi!! So I joined this sub because well I was born in St. Petersburg! So I’m new here, but not quite. I was adopted when I was little but have always been so curious about where I was born. I know the travel to Russia right now is pretty difficult given the tension, but I would love to come back someday and see everything. On that note I’m curious, what is your favorite thing about the city if you’ve been there? I just want to know more about where I’m from 🤍 Thanks guys! 🤍
Hi everyone, I want to ask about the situation in Moscow for foreigners, I have the chance to come to study master in computer science in Moscow with a scholarship that covers tution fees and provide me a hostel, The master is 2 years and there preparatory year for russian language since the master is in russian, Now i work as a software developer, i have around 1.5 years of experience, I can't afford coming without finding a job, and i don't want to come and find a job in another field and waste my years of experience and career
I looked on the website that's called hh.ru for jobs in the development domain that i work in it's called (, flutter framework) and i found around 140 jobs for that in Moscow,
But I'm not sure if russian companies would hire a foreigner, who is still learning russian, and have a student Visa, I'm not sure if i can even work on a student Visa, also a friend of mine told me that most of the company would ask you to have a permanent residence before they hire you.
So my question is how feasible it's for me to be able to work freely in Russia as a student, in terms of visa, regulations and companies environment to hire foreigners?
Thanks a lot, any advice or help would be really appreciated
Hello,
I've heard that Russia has now allowed fast-track citizenship to those who have Ukrainian citizenship without having to pass a language test or anything and apparently its now been changed to anyone of Ukrainian citizenship.
Can people please confirm this, how it works and does it work from abroad at an embassy?
I couldn't find the decree or law behind this just news reports.
Thank you everyone.
I know it is illegal and that there is a lot of paranoia around using and buying, but I am mainly wondering how people smoke it? Where it may be grown? How strong is it? And do people sell dab oils and dab carts? or is that only possible in countries where it is legalized?
Hey I’m an author and trying to select a nickname a Russian would use for the Chinese girl he’s calling for. Mind you this story takes place 250 years in the future so Russia and China aren’t what we see now.
всем привет! basically the title. is halloween popular like it is in the US? do little kids and or adults dress up? is trick or treating a thing? or is it traditional to eat candy or sweets? thank you and happy halloween!🎃
Is kino a decent depiction of the general Russian sentiment during COMMUNISM I'm learning Russian if anyone could elaborate that would be awesome thank you or spasiba I think
Hi, I would like to follow some in-depth, insightful blogs or publications about economics, supply chains and geopolitics from a Russian perspective and in the Russian language. Specifically not just looking for news, but rather analysis to help put things together and understand the world better. And practice my Russian :).
Here's some examples of articles I'd be interested in reading about:
* Analysis of how recent AI developments are impacting Russia, problems sanctions introduce with importing GPUs and how those are being tackled, and comparing Russian, Chinese and American AI service ecosystems.
* Analysis of how Russia prepared its economy before starting the Ukraine war, how the impact of sanctions has been continually managed as sanctions expanded, and a projection into the future.
* Maybe some profiles of innovative high-tech Russian companies that are doing things better than their American counterparts, why they are successful, what challenges they face. I've always been impressed how Yandex was able to occasionally outcompete Google for example. I wonder how their self-driving cars are doing.
* Analysis of Russian industrial policy, how Russia can compete with the economies of scale of Chinese manufacturing in the long-term.
Strongly opinionated or somewhat crazy authors welcomed, as long as they can back it up.
I'd be happy to pay a reasonable amount, but imagine there may be barriers to pay for a Russian publication from the United States.
On the other hand, here are some US-based publications I like:
Bismark Brief (Substack) does deep-dive profiles of companies and trends. Pricey, but really well researched. I paid for a single month and went on a reading spree a year ago, should do it again and catch up.
BigSerge (Substack) does mostly historical war analysis, with some current event war analysis sprinkled in.
Niccolo Soldo (Substack) does good cultural analysis and political analysis (USA and Europe).
Money Stuff by Matt Levine (bloomberg) writes about finance in a very fun way. Not looking for deep finance recommendations though.
Stratechery analyzes American businesses, focusing on 'high tech'.
I’m trying to remember this Russian band from Saint Petersburg that came across my Spotify playlist a year or two ago that I used to listen to on repeat. They sing in English and if you didn’t read their bio you’d have no idea they were from Russia because their English is so good. I don’t remember any of the lyrics but they had turntables, a very melodic singer and a background singer that screamed. Sorry for the vague description. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi everyone,
The place I'm working for wants to promote their game to Russians, so I'm looking for popular platforms. Any ideas?
I know Russian so no problems there. Thank you!
If yes, do you like them roasted, steamed, or sauteed? What other cabbage dishes do you like? Do you eat cabbage with salt and pepper? What kind of oil do you use to cook it? What do you pair it with?
Hey! I’m scripting a podcast episode about Russian women and would like to ask who do you think should be mentioned (aside from the most obvious ones like Catherine the Great or Valentina Tereshkova)? I am looking for a varied group of characters: different historical eras, artists, scientists, political figures, heroes and villains. In addition I am interested in your views on women’s societal roles in Russia during different times and how they might or might not differ from those in the West.
Thank you for your contribution already! ☺️
Hey everyone!
My wife and I are planning to make the move from Canada to Kazan, and we're trying to think ahead about job prospects for her. She’s a registered nurse here but has never really enjoyed medicine. She has Serbian heritage and can speak Serbian fluently, and while she understands Russian quite well, she doesn’t feel confident speaking it yet. We figure it might take her about a year to become more fluent in Russian.
She’s extremely detail-oriented and prefers technical or analytical work rather than dealing with people directly. Given these traits, does anyone have suggestions for fields or specific jobs she could explore once we’re in Kazan? We’d love to hear any advice or experiences you might have!
hello all, I'm trying to translate a book into English and cannot find what song this could be referencing. is this made up for the book? hopeful someone can help!! here are the lyrics:
«Говорил Ростом: – Пусть слово
Будет мягким, как земля!
Храбрых радует опасность,
Честь победы им суля!..
Говорил Ростом: – Что лучше, —
Рассуди-ка, человек, —
Лучше ль умереть однажды
Иль терзаться целый век?…»
sorry if this is the wrong place, id just love an answer
Hi, I am currently in Saransk and want to convert my USD to RUB directly through a bank or ATM without a broker or a middleman. I have a Trinkoff bank account, so can I put USD in it's ATM and get rubles in my Tbank bank account? If not, then is there any other solution?
I'm planning to travel to Russia this Dec and currently applying for a Russian E-visa. But I've heard that medical insurance is mandatory. If true, any suggested insurance companies that offer coverage for traveling in Russia?
So much land! Proud sporting heritage! Plentiful forests and grasslands for "parkland" style courses.
A brilliant game to practice "zen".
I was an avid golfer in my youth and I'm actually amazed by the lack of courses.
What gives?! Sources in English indicate less than 40 courses and they're all snooty/to expensive for regular folks.
I have a friend that was adopted from Russia as a child (she left around 2001). She says that she has been nostalgic for the porridge she ate as a child in the orphanage—that in her head that is what home tastes like—but she has never been able to recreate it/can’t remember the ingredients. Anybody have a clue what type of porridge it would most likely be/tips on preparation? I’m sorry I don’t have any more details!
