Ask a Russian!
Privet!
This place is meant to be a Q&A subreddit for everyone who wants to pose questions and requests to Russian speakers.
It's Russian speakers, not just Russians, because Russia is a multinational and multiethnic state and because there are many other countries where people speak the Russian language. The sub was created by a Russian speaker from Ukraine. We also have some people from Belarus, Kazakhstan and other ex-USSR countries where Russian is widely spoken. All of them will be glad to answer your questions. Question from Russians to Russians are allowed too.
And hey, if you're into instant messengers, check out our Discord! Contents include: language learning, expat talk, edgy memes, anime, videogames, and flame wars from time to time.

Hi! I'm looking for good Russian language shows and movies I could get into. Even if you know of good Netflix shows that have good Russian dubs. I'm attempting to learn Russian (600 streak on Duolingo before I gave up) in a non-russian speaking country, but I do get a lot of Russian customers at work and I want to be able to interact with them properly.
It baffles me that a doctor or a nurse who has the life of another person in their hands and had to study extensively to be capable of it.
Get the same salary as a manual worker!!!
Hello 👋
I was wondering what kind of payment methods are used in Russia currently especially to book hotels and buy airline tickets.
Thanks!
A few months I got into collecting russian scales coins. I randomly bought a few without knowing anything about then and the facination was almost instant. It's been very interesting trying to learn all I can about them. And learning the history of pre-peterine russia has been a very cool bonus.
I've been using Google translate to try and find russian sources for info and identification of the scales. I use pdfs of older K.G. books but I keep seeing one referenced that was released in 2022(?). I would really like to buy this book because it has quite a bit more info than the older ones.
I cant find it anywhere in the US. There's only one site I found it on that ships to US and it's extremely overpriced and I'm pretty sure the site is a scam. But ive found a few copies on Meshok.
Is there anyway to get one shipped to me?
I don't know if links are allowed on here but this is the title of the listing I'm looking at.
ГКХ-2: Гришин Клещинов Храменков Каталог русских монет от Ивана Грозного до Петра Великого 2-е изд
GKH-2: Grishin Kleshchinov Khramenkov Catalogue of Russian coins from Ivan the Terrible to Peter the Great 2nd ed.
TLDR: Want to ship the above book from Meshok, to the US. Is this possible? How much would it cost?
Of all the Russians I’ve met (mostly in the west) I’ve only met a couple of ‘Z patriots’. All those I’ve met have been educated and usually wealthy. I thought there would be more Russians that are wholly against Putin and the war and see it as a war of aggression etc.
To my surprise, most don’t necessarily like the war or Putin, but they still support their motherland and the social contract they have with their regime (that normal people shouldn’t get too involved, and let Putin & Co. run the country as they see fit). Putin after all brought them into the modern age and [insert pro-Putin talking points as rebuttal to his war, that I’ve heard a lot]
I think there’s a misconception in the west that many Russians are fully against Putin & the war, but my personal experience tells me otherwise. But maybe my experience it too limited.
Coming from Russians: what percentage of Russians do you think are wholeheartedly anti-regime & war?
Thank you
Hi,
My friend and I want to travel to Russia one day when war is over. We are from Germany. So good idea? What do you guys think about us? Are we still welcome? I’m currently trying to learn the language😅.
Most of my neighbors and many friends were russian in my childhood and we always got along. With the war now it didn’t change even though the spirit is more anti Russian in Germany rn…
So what you guys think?
Hello everyone! I have a question about bypassing restrictions in Turkey, especially for Discord. It seems that there are restrictions similar to Russia, where IP blocking and DPI are used, and simply changing the DNS doesn’t help. I’m trying to find a solution that would work for macOS (cross-platform would be better) or on a router.
I’ve tried GreenTunnel SpoofDPI, but it’s not working. 1.1.1.1 DNS only allows accepting invites, not accessing Discord itself. Warp works for Discord, but I can’t enter voice channels.
I’d appreciate any advice or tools that might help. How do you bypass these restrictions? Thanks in advance!
People of the group, I need help. I have plans to travel from Russia to America. I have not done the process before and I am not sure if I am even allowed to. How do I visit America from Russia? What are the steps and processes?
Hello, I'm an orthodox Christian from Algeria, i face a lot of persecution in my country and i have no churches to go to, so i was planning to move to Russia, and i was just willing to ask, is there any racism in Russia?
I was reading about the preferencies of the people in the UK on whether they have any issues being called British. I came to the conclusion that it depends on the person. Some prefer to be called Scottish, Welsh, or English, while others are fine with "British" or both. The topic seems more complicated with the people from Northern Ireland. In the end, you can call them British or by they nationality and wait until you know their personal preference.
I was wondering whether in Russia, this is the same. Would people there have any issues with being called "Russian"? If I were to travel to Russia one day, would someone introduce themselves as Chuvash or Yakut instead of Russian, for example?
I'm located in the GTA and looking to purchase a few inexpensive silver religious pendants from a website that doesn't ship to Canada. If anyone is heading there in the near futute, I would love to speak to you about picking these up for me (etransfer paid in advance). Message me if you're interested.
Hello Everyone,
I'm excited to share that I'll be visiting Russia soon, it's been on my bucket list for a long time! I want to make the most of my 90-day trip by exploring as much of the country as possible.
While Google and YouTube highlight popular and viral spots, I'm looking for a deeper experience one that truly immerses me in Russia’s culture, history, and everyday life. I’d love recommendations from those who have been there or have on their travel Wishlist.
Looking forward to your suggestions—thanks in advance!
Firstly, I know a bit about astronomy and such and I am aware that there are bouts of magnetic storms coming from the sun from time to time.
But I never thought of it as a medical event that would have any physiological impact on people.
Until I joined the telegram channels. Stuff like this exist:

See, "few hours ago", as if it were a weather report. Migraines, blood pressure, stress...what the hell? M
Neither in the Croatian society in real life, nor on the internet, have I ever hear people talking about magnetic storms or being sensitive to them.
So it's only within the runet context.
So, what is the origin of this pseudo-science?

I love Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff, are there any composers that seem to stand out from the rest and receive greater attention and love in Russia?
Also feel free to drop your favorite novels, I’ve had to read them in translation unfortunately, but Russian literature has been a cornerstone of my artistic consumption and development.
Why do you guys like Putin so much
I'm guessing that some commenters here might have friends/family who are U.S. residents or U.S. citizens and who have visited Russia since 2022.
Have you heard if these American citizens and green card holders are getting extra scrutiny or searches or questioning upon returning to the USA, or do American immigration officers seemingly not care if Americans and green card holders are visiting Russia these days, despite the U.S. government warnings against travel to Russia?
hello I’m just curious what Russians think of the character Sova from Valorant especially his accent
I asked my cousin (not Russian) who plays Valorant what he thought of Sova and he said he didnt know Sova was supposed to be Russian and I have a friend from Kazakhstan who said Sova’s Russian accent is very strange doesnt sound Russian even the way he says his name Sova the accent is wrong for the Russian word apparently, when we looked it up the voice actor didn’t grow up in Russia so I’m just wondering what do Russians think of this? Would you have preferred a voice actor who actually grew up in Russia?
I’m just curious what you think of Russian characters and I tried searching this sub for valorant and didnt see any questions like mine so thank you in advance for any answers!

In a few days I will travel to Russia for university and I did not take enough time to prepare myself well because it was short notice, so I searched and found the Avito app and I liked many things there, such as clothes and so on. Now I am asking how I can buy from this application. When I arrive, I put $500 to buy things from the application. Can someone explain to me the procedures for buying? Btw, I will be in Moscow. And does Avito deliver orders to the university? Thank you for reading 🙏🏽
Has it happened in the past? Do you think it's possible in the future? My gut tells me only citizens would be allowed to join considering the choir's national prestige, but I need to know for sure.
I know here in America a couple years ago it was kinda a big meme and everyone thought Russians sounded like that. Outside of hardbass style music and memes though I don't know if I've heard any Russian say it in conversation. It's usually "pashul nakhoy" or just the F word on its own.
My knowledge of Russian conversation mainly comes from random videos, be it of soldiers in Ukraine or memes from videogames or just videos of Russian people. I've rarely if ever heard an actual Russian person say "Cyka Blyat". So is it just a stereotype or do Russians actually commonly drop that phrase whenever?
Sorry if this is an odd question.
Hi all. I will be travelling to Russia on E-Visa. I plan to purchase SIM card at airport. Some one informed me that, if we purchase sim at airport, while going back, we need to cancel the sim or the connection at airport before departure. Should I buy a Sim and tell the person to cancel the number after certain date while purchasing at airport? Or the prepaid sim gets disabled after certain days? Regards
I just wonder if there are any qualities in Americans that Russian men/women find attractive? Equally curious about deal breakers.
