/r/ZombieSurvivalTactics - a community for in-depth discussion about survival against zombies. We're ready. Are you?
Welcome to /r/ZombieSurvivalTactics!
This is a community to talk about survival against zombies, whether it is how you would make your way through a horde of zombies, or if your group decides to go against you and it becomes a riot! Possibly you're off the grid and you need to learn how to survive off the land. We have it all.
Come here and be ready for some good, well-thought-out scenarios and in-depth discussions!
Though zombie-based material inherently has some NSFW content, posts must be as safe for work as possible. This means no nudity, no excessive gore, no material promoting dangerous or illegal situations, etc. For Fridays, this will be somewhat more relaxed.
If you are going to post a link, video, or image make sure to phrase it as a question, topic of discussion, etc. Don't just post a link to stuff, a picture of gear, or a video you think is cool.
If you want to post your "zombie survival loadout/kit/bag" provide a written list of the items (if a picture is used, this list should include items not shown), Details (clear images can be an alternative for this), Description of the items (including your reasoning for showing them), and questions regarding said loadout including: "what do you like, what do you dislike, and what can be improved" With "rate my loadout" or similar questions being acceptable alternatives for the last question.
As a rule of thumb, stay away from talking about popular fiction plots. If there is a specific tactic used that you want to discuss then tread lightly; make sure to give as little of the story away and mark your post a spoiler.
Content must be somehow related to survival in a zombie setting. If you are looking for Call of Duty Zombies, Minecraft, or other video game-related content you are in the wrong place.
Memeing and shitposting of sub-related topics are allowed on Fridays only. This includes Innawoods Loadouts and "Choose Your [Gear]" image posts. Detailed loadout posts utilizing spreadsheets, detailed images and descriptions, Lighter Pack, and similar formats are permitted on other days.
"How could zombies exist" and "CWD Deer Zombies OMG" are topics we get a lot. It is fun to fantasize how zombies could exist but it has little to no bearing on how to deal with them tactically. They also frequently bring in unnecessary harassment of the mentally ill, those suffering from seizures or panic attacks, drug addicts, and those afflicted with actual real-world diseases, are false attention-grabbing news, or otherwise are intended for some type of marketing.
This means no movie/TV/book/similar media promotions, clickbait Cronic Wasting Disease or parasitic cordyceps articles, analysis of people dying from rabies, those suffering from mental illnesses or drug usage, calling people zombies as a result of political views, in character roleplay or cosplay pretending zombies are real, and the like.
This sub is for hypothetical discussion. There will also be disagreement and people will tell you your "foolproof" zombie plan is wrong. Try not to get too defensive, argue the points themselves, and please remain civil.
We will not tolerate pointless bickering, insults, name-calling, etc. This also means sexism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, radicalism, bullying, harassment, etc. aren't going to be tolerated. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without stooping to childish behavior.
This isn't really a rule but a general assumption to make discussion easier.
The "standard" zombie used in this sub is the slow undead variety. With notable examples including early George Romero Night of the living dead, Zombie Survival Guide/WWZ novel, The Walking Dead, Etc. If unspecified, it will be assumed you are talking about this style of zombie.
If you wish to discuss other zombies or "zombie adjacent" creatures that's fine but be sure to specify this. Otherwise you will be causing undo confusion. These might include: Fast zombies (28 Days Later), Magic zombies (D&D), Chicken zombies (CONPLAN 8888), Etc

I always wondered what the amazon rainforest would look like during TWD/ or any type of zombie apocalypse for that matter. All the yet to be discovered species! Imagine them all zombified. Imagine the characters of such an environment. Do you think some species would be resistant to the virus?
not only do they stick out like a sore thumb among normal traffic and attract attention from your desperate neighbors, the parts can be incredibly hard to find as opposed to finding parts to a toyota minivan, so you'd be in a bad situation if the radiator on your humvee gets damaged or you get a flat and not have a useable spare
Yall can keep arguing about .22 vs BudK knives. I'll be out cleaning up your neighborhood.
Context: This is the smallest model trencher for the front of a skidsteer loader. It is getting checked over by the mechanics before going out to another happy customer.
Personally I would because I have all the stuff I would need
Both me and my wife snore. Her way more than me. And mine only happens when on my back but she snores on any side. I was thinking about how would someone deal with snoring during a zombie apocalypse?
I have a neighbor who owns a rifle. We have a dog and cat. I REFUSE to eat my own pets. I’m not that cruel. But they would take up a lot of food? My dog HATES intruders though..might be able to use that. He’s a coward but is hard for him to attack, he also hates it when people try to touch him. Maybe release the cat and keep the dog? I have canned food, some water and soda. I have a scout knife(not the best weapons, but might be useful.) I have plenty of food. But I’m an anxious guy. Once I run out of anxiety pills, I might start panicking constantly. So..safe to say, how long would I live?
Personally I think most people will forget about the simple crowbar. There will be plenty of places you need to get into that will require a little less noise. I would also add into that a heavy duty set of bolt cutters.
These 2 items can get you into almost everywhere you need to get into without all the noise and drawing in the Horde. Plus they can be used as weapons if needed.
I know someone will say lock pick kit but seriously how much practice you been doing with that kit and can those lock pick kits double as a weapon?
So what's your underrated tools or devices.
So let’s say you have a 22LR for your long range gun. I see people debate on here all the time about whether a 22LR would actually be good against zombies. But do things change with different ammo?
What ammo would you be stockpiling?
CCI Stingers for higher speed and pen but lower accuracy?
Winchester Silvertip for more fragmentation in a wound?
CCI Quiet-22 with a silencer for silent kills?
Or is there some sort of good all-rounder ammo out there?
Pictured: Not what I’d use. These things sometimes fire like they barely have any powder in them.
This is something I've seen more than a few times in an attempt to justify shotguns, but when you stop and think about it a simple question comes to mind: Why? Why would you breach a door with a shotgun over using a crowbar, or fire ax, or entrenching tool, or sledge hammer, or numerous other options? Hell, just bust out a window? Sure police/military do it, but if you're sweeping houses in the zombie apocalypse you're probably doing something wrong (and likely to get you killed).
Just seems like you're creating a lot of noise, and using ammo, for no real reason. If there's some niche scenario where there's a running clock you have to beat I still gotta imagine the window's going to be faster - not to mention is potentially going to be an obstacle to anything that might be chasing after you. Maybe there's not a window, but there aren't very many buildings designed like that these days.
Just saying, the scenario where this makes practical sense seems very improbable.
In case if there’s an outbreak at a local city and it’s too dangerous that you need to evacuate. Or if the government orders a bombing run.
What’s your plan and equipment needed for getting out of the city fast? You have 72 hours to evacuate.
What if right before the Global Outbreak started, Solanum mutated and infected everyone on earth. The outbreak starts exactly the same way but now all deaths result in a zombie.
Assuming book version.
In any zombie media ever no one worry’s about bugs if a mosquito can transfer disease what about the zombie virus. Or what if an ant colony or a hornet nest gets infected then your ROYALLY fucked. it just makes no sense to me and I’d like to see a movie that takes this into consideration. so basically if the zombie apocalypse starts you better hope you’ve got a bug zapper.
If you haven't seen this film, I consider it essential viewing and you now have homework. Moving along, the characters in the movie have a prolonged zombie staycation at the local mall. From the beginning of the outbreak and until the end of their stay, they are surrounded by zombies. They go about their days in relative safety and appear to have plenty of downtime not allocated to survival. I've daydreamed about attaching either a dumbbell or a bowling ball to a rope, and dropping it on the horde of zombies. The weight could be raised to zombie head-level and swung from side to side. This is a form of "yard maintenance." It debulks the zombies you have to eventually deal with while remaining relatively quiet. Which could've proven useful when running supplies/food to Andy in his gun shop. These characters had an abundance of time. Surely less zombies on the property is a good thing. If the bodies get stacked too high, move to a different area, keeping entryways and exits clear. What else is there to do? Malls are boring, even when they're open.
Compact, durable, and relatively light. You can dig yourself a toilet, break windows for scavenging, use it as a pry bar for weaker doors, or dig pits for zombie traps.
Used as a weapon, you can chop or smash with it. The shape helps prevent it from getting stuck in dead zombies, and even if it’s been beat to hell, bent and worn, it is still a decent sized piece of metal with a safe place to grip it.
Thoughts?

Been scrolling through YouTube recently looking at half remembered videos I watched at this or then and stumbled across Guns and Gardens - it was kinda like a survival flavoured documentary/DIY web show, focused around something or other each episode usually involving some kind of scenario/task (growing food in a cramped space, urban camo, stashes+bugout equipment, that kinda thing) Here's the link to the playlist , I'd love to hear people's thoughts and whether or not you've seen it before!
This is just a thought that I have. We all agreed that there is going to be a lot of traffic jam due people of trying to get out of dodge when shit hit the fan. I assumed that many would abandoned their cars and hoof it on foot if there is a large group of zombies chasing after them while they're stuck in the traffic, presumably leaving behind gas if the car was turn off and any supplies they may have in the trunk
So for specifications! You have a week heads up that the apoc is starting so you in your wisdom have a base built asap wether it be in the city or out of town in the country.
How do you build it? You can only build the shell of said base. So nothing inside or outside. You only had time to build walls, roof, perimeter fence and overlook watchtower (if you want). What do you build and how is it laid out so when you finally do get there and start setting up, you know what goes where and how it's defended.
Now to clarify, nothing insane like castles or whole community's. It's purely a base big enough for max 4 people. You can add on later if you want, but apoc rules apply as in materials may be hard to acquire or build with in the state of the world.
It seems like in most of the post I see about surviving a zombie apocalypses:
A) They are 100% focused on combat with little emphasis on actual survival. You guys keep posting "kits", and it's like 70 pounds of weapons and no water.
B) Combat works on the assumption that zombies can be killed by hemorrhaging and internal organ trauma despite that not being lethal to undead in most fictional settings.
I'm not trying to be a dick. This place keeps popping up in my feed and I don't understand what your rules are. I get that it's just a joke, but how serious are you supposed to be taking it?
Just as it sounds what will be your energy boost of choice to stock up and carry with you. I love coffee but aint no way I will have time brewing a cup of Joe in between dusting ZOMS.
I thought about those 5 Hour Energy Shots but I think I would be drinking them like Tequila Shots and end up having a massive crash afterwards. I also thought about those energy jelly beans.
So whatcha think and whatcha gonna be using. Please don't say Cocaine is a Helluva Drug" I know we ain't all Rick James. and Please don't Say your stash of "Pot" because we all know you just gonna get all stoned and try to break into the Dunkin Donuts.
So yesterday we explored what happened if the turds hit the fan while I was at work. We all agreed for the most part, it was better than a wet noodle, not as good as a full spec ops loadout, but considering I’m half Sasquatch, it would work for me. Today we’ll pretend I sledgehammered my way to my jeep, it actually started, and I made it to my lair. So that means I would be at home, chillin, when I get a hankerin for chicken nuggies and Mountain Dew like all good nerds do. But the undead are roaming, how do I get to McDonald’s? That’s where my poor man’s kit comes in. In all seriousness, my money goes toward food preps, water, first aid, tools, and things like that when I prep. I go cheaper on hardware, but still have it. So here we go. My Operation yummy nuggies loadout is a mix and match, whatever way the wind blows me. We have a cheap AR, rocking a mid grade optic. I hit reliably out to 150m with it, and that’s good enough for now. The boomstick is a tried and true mossberg 500, 12 gauge, with the plug out. Can’t legally hunt with it now, but with the 18 inch barrel, no choke, I wouldn’t anyway. It was my patrol shotty back when I was a member of the pig pen. After that I choose either my IIA soft vest, for when style and sophistication matter, or my heavy as hell plate carrier rocking two AR 550 swimmers cut plates. Attached is a crappy radio that my allies also have on their vests for larping days. I have my old SRT helmet, goggles, and a US military surplus IFAK. There’s also little binocs in the black pouch. Oh yeah the plate carrier can rock 6 mags in the pouches but they currently have 3. The nifty little molle shot shell case holds 18 of our chubby little shell friends. I tend to just strap it on my belt. And there you have it.
I have a woodland camo jacket and I'm playing on making my own BDU kit soon but I was wonder what would be best camo.
Is it woodland
Hunting camo
Or something eles
Often I'll see a zombie apocalypse referenced in this sub, but what does an apocalypse mean to you?
Personally it means collapse of society worldwide. You can lose regions, and if your region is one that's falling apart it sucks, but it's not an apocalypse. We could lose countries, even massive populations, such as China or India, but not have an apocalypse. You could think it's an apocalypse, when it's just your region.
