/r/ZombieSurvivalTactics - a community for in-depth discussion about survival against zombies. We're ready. Are you?
Welcome to /r/ZombieSurvivalTactics!
This is a community to talk about survival against zombies, whether it is how you would make your way through a horde of zombies, or if your group decides to go against you and it becomes a riot! Possibly you're off the grid and you need to learn how to survive off the land. We have it all.
Come here and be ready for some good, well-thought-out scenarios and in-depth discussions!
Though zombie-based material inherently has some NSFW content, posts must be as safe for work as possible. This means no nudity, no excessive gore, no material promoting dangerous or illegal situations, etc. For Fridays, this will be somewhat more relaxed.
If you are going to post a link, video, or image make sure to phrase it as a question, topic of discussion, etc. Don't just post a link to stuff, a picture of gear, or a video you think is cool.
If you want to post your "zombie survival loadout/kit/bag" provide a written list of the items (if a picture is used, this list should include items not shown), Details (clear images can be an alternative for this), Description of the items (including your reasoning for showing them), and questions regarding said loadout including: "what do you like, what do you dislike, and what can be improved" With "rate my loadout" or similar questions being acceptable alternatives for the last question.
As a rule of thumb, stay away from talking about popular fiction plots. If there is a specific tactic used that you want to discuss then tread lightly; make sure to give as little of the story away and mark your post a spoiler.
Content must be somehow related to survival in a zombie setting. If you are looking for Call of Duty Zombies, Minecraft, or other video game-related content you are in the wrong place.
Memeing and shitposting of sub-related topics are allowed on Fridays only. This includes Innawoods Loadouts and "Choose Your [Gear]" image posts. Detailed loadout posts utilizing spreadsheets, detailed images and descriptions, Lighter Pack, and similar formats are permitted on other days.
"How could zombies exist" and "CWD Deer Zombies OMG" are topics we get a lot. It is fun to fantasize how zombies could exist but it has little to no bearing on how to deal with them tactically. They also frequently bring in unnecessary harassment of the mentally ill, those suffering from seizures or panic attacks, drug addicts, and those afflicted with actual real-world diseases, are false attention-grabbing news, or otherwise are intended for some type of marketing.
This means no movie/TV/book/similar media promotions, clickbait Cronic Wasting Disease or parasitic cordyceps articles, analysis of people dying from rabies, those suffering from mental illnesses or drug usage, calling people zombies as a result of political views, in character roleplay or cosplay pretending zombies are real, and the like.
This sub is for hypothetical discussion. There will also be disagreement and people will tell you your "foolproof" zombie plan is wrong. Try not to get too defensive, argue the points themselves, and please remain civil.
We will not tolerate pointless bickering, insults, name-calling, etc. This also means sexism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, radicalism, bullying, harassment, etc. aren't going to be tolerated. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without stooping to childish behavior.
This isn't really a rule but a general assumption to make discussion easier.
The "standard" zombie used in this sub is the slow undead variety. With notable examples including early George Romero Night of the living dead, Zombie Survival Guide/WWZ novel, The Walking Dead, Etc. If unspecified, it will be assumed you are talking about this style of zombie.
If you wish to discuss other zombies or "zombie adjacent" creatures that's fine but be sure to specify this. Otherwise you will be causing undo confusion. These might include: Fast zombies (28 Days Later), Magic zombies (D&D), Chicken zombies (CONPLAN 8888), Etc

Honestly I reckon if you maintain the ship have a decent amount of supply’s you’ll be safe and sound
Im always seeing people saying you will never go on foot when shit hits the fan because we're all some fat otakus with fantasies LOL! But say I am, a fat otaku that are completely out of breath when climbing up few stairs. What about electric bike stashed? if you invest in good bike it can carry you 100+ miles with great speed, in few hours, which is more than any athletic people can do. You keep it close with you, along with your survival gears, so when shit hits the fan, you can use it to flee the town, out run zombies, get away to somewhere you can safely settle, to nearby mountains, military made bases for people, nearby forts who wants to help people out, anywhere. It REALLY is better than nothing right? your means of transportation. I wouldn't trust cars, you'll be facing something much worse than a traffic at china lmao. Electric bike should be good?
Bored rn so I’m gonna just yap for a bit lmk what yall think.
My family hunts so not only is my dad, mom and myself acquainted with firearms but also pretty good. My dad and I also shoot bows, so that’s weapons sorted next for food we have venison and other preserved foods so there’s food. Even without power we can still hunt and grow food. Our house is easily defendable and we have a big dog to alert us. Overall we live in a small remote suburb so I’ll safe!
When you get your period It''ll be really hard to get a pad or tampond or anything, also do zombies still get them?? Discuss.
I know this sub is about zombie survival, but the strategys for surviving a zombie apocalypse are the same for surviving a real apocalypse such as an economic collaspe caused by someone who dosnt know how tariffs work and the logistical and eceneomic devastation caused when you take 11 million of anything out of an economy, especially members of the workforce. All that's to say is that it would be a great time to buy land and start building your compounds to protect your women, lgbtq, and POC communities from the spike in hate crimes that has already started. Aswell as to feed yourself during the impending economic struggle that's going to happen.
I love this community. Have been lurking a bit but it’s so entertaining seeing the extreme outliers of people actually able to survive an apocalypse with proper items and shit. Then you got the other side of people with the most braindead ideas they got from the walking dead or some other show. Always an entertaining ride here.
Topic for this. Favorite obscure zombie weapon that would absolutely carry you through the apocalypse. Doesn’t matter if you have it or not irl just whatever you think would do well.
Anyone have extra gears and weaponries? Me and my friends only have axes, spears, and knives for weapons. Also duct tape to cover arms and exposed flesh.
If there are, if possible, send it to us (I feel shameful right now, but a friend of mine asked me to ask). Location? Comment down below if you'll send it.
Soo, the zombie apocalypse in World war Z(film) is very hard to survive. Me and my friends have been planning what to do when the mentioned zombie apocalypse happened.
Mode of infection: bite as usual, airborne it can spread when an area is crowded, when one is infected in the crowd everyone will be, spread by airborne takes longer to be infected.
And I'm gonna tell you, none will work. You see, those zombies are too fast, agile, and almost immortal (you see, in the film, in the scene of patient 0's 'burned to ashes' death bed, the zombie hand is still moving despites it's the only body part, indicating each virus is alive. But they can be killed by few shots in head if I'm right or explosives. The zombie started in Dachang, China as a virus named Solanum.
It takes 11 or 12 seconds for one to be infected after a bite. And it's clear these zombies are blind yet strong ears. Remember the Israel wall scene? They stacked up to climb the wall upon hearing the people's loud celebration. They act like a dog with rabies, also going for the bite. They also actually sleep at night and can be awake by 100 or 120 decibels.
The only weakness is if you have a different diseases, illness(flu, malnourishment, cold) or virus already, the virus can't determine if it's the same virus they are infected have making them ignore the person with disease.
Our plan is to stay to an island, deserted one after gathering enough supplies, we can't really rely on guns, it'll trigger horde of zombies, but not melee also, so incase shotgun, but we'll avoid combat as much as possible by using armored vehicles that were fast despite of being armored like bus(it can carry 70 people in constant speed of 70kmph) to arrive to a boat station thing.
So what's your plan to this?
Me, if you wanna get in you have to strip and be throughly searched before your allowed to enter I got the idea from a joke made on a podcast but it makes some sense
Metal pole, baseball bat, crowbar, machete, whatever. What do you use to holster it to your back?
I have EDS and use a manual wheelchair (but can walk a little), my roommate's on crutches, my other roommate has muscular dystrophy and uses an electric wheelchair and my other roommate has epilepsy.
How fucked are we in the event of a zombie apocalypse? I've read 'The Zombie Survival Guide' and I reckon we could last a few days by barricading ourselves in, but overall we'd be screwed. However I think our disabilities might lend themselves in handy in a few ways:
-I have chronic fatigue so may be mistaken for a zombie by the zombies and left alone (i.e. 'Shawn of the Dead' probably not a great idea though)
-I have stockpiled a ton of cleaning products, food, and medicines in preparation of a flare up (so we'd have supplies)
-Wheelchairs provide some level of protection from zombie attack (and I can go pretty damn fast downhill. If the zombies chase me uphill it's over)
-Crutches and canes can be used as a weapon
-I'm a germaphobe and will therefore not make the classic mistake of 'trusting someone who turns out to be hiding a zombie bite'. If I even suspect you've seen a zombie, I'm making you strip and prove you haven't been bitten. Plus if it's transmissible by blood (as in '28 days later') I have some PPE we could use.
Ways in which our disabilities would screw us over:
-If the zombies are fast moving, we won't be able to outrun them
-We won't be able to go up stairs (and according to Max Brooks the best strategy for a short term survival is apparently climbing up a flight of stairs and destroying them behind you)
-Without her seizure meds, my roommate will start having absence seizures where she just stands still staring into space- not ideal for running from zombies but maybe they'd think she's one of them?
-We live on the ground floor with huge windows that would be tricky to barricade
-Only one of us would be strong enough to actually move stuff around for barricades
-A couple of us are also autistic and pretty picky eaters, so probably won't be up for scavenging
-I have pretty bad contamination OCD and would 100% use up all the drinking water to wash my hands
-After we run out of medications we might die
What do you think? Can we survive?
for whatever reason you only have access to bolt guns, single shot rifles/shotguns, pump guns, single action revolvers, hell even those hunting airguns shooting between 30 and 70 cal pellets. What do you take and why?
Personally I'd take a .44 revolver for most larger threats and a .22 bolt for varmints/hunting
There’s a lot of bug out bag comments here. Usually “what should I have in my bag to leave…..” wherever. It’s a very personal choice as to what you need, depending on your needs, ability, and budget. My philosophy is, if you’re prepped to survive zombies, then surviving storms, earthquake, social unrest, fires, is much easier. My kit is particular to my needs, skills, and ability, it’s not a one size fits all. I’ve done a 15 mile hike in this set up, and I figure 20 miles a day is the max I want to try. I’ve also camped out of this bag.
The stuff inside the bag still (too much for the photo): 72 hour freeze dried food kit Sawyer mini filter Waterproof matches Magnesium fire starter Fero rod Dryer lint Cotton balls Tea candles Small tarp Camping hammock with tree straps Military canteen Small mess kit Allergy pills Socks, underwear Batteries for walkers Batteries for red dot Ammo
It’s a layered set up, so I can strip off parts. The outer vest is strictly load bearing, I can wear my level II soft armor under it if I want. The pouch on the back of the bag is an eBay bought infantry trauma kit with all the bandages and tourniquet. The black bag under the main bag is a gas mask with extra filters. Blue bag is ground pad. There’s charcoal tabs, ibuprofen, and first aid ointment. A life straw. Folding shovel. Food I picked out for my tastes and needs. A neck gaiter, as well as the gray cloth being basically a balaclava. There’s a camelback in the bag ready to fill, and purification tabs bought at Walmart. The tea pot has a baggie of green tea packs, as well as herbal teas for sore throats etc. Also a compass and map in my bag, with a small note pad and pen
There’s things I’m leaving out because of it just being too much, and if I had adequate notification that things were going south my jeep kit is more robust, with a Dutch oven, axe, tools, camp stove with propane bottles, more food. The bug out set up is 40 pounds approximately. I work as a laborer, swinging hammers, shoveling, climbing ladders, climbing steps, carrying equipment, so I know my limits, and this fits my required 3 day/53 mile jaunt to my bug out location.
This isn’t a brag post, I want people to see the different options they have, and tailor their set up to their needs.
Situation is, you're blissfully unaware, tucking into pudding. Until a guy smashes through the door being chewed on by another guy. A couple others trail in and attack the nearest customers. You're a few tables away.
Basically is your stuff always nearby?
Do you never go out for a meal?
If you do, what restaurant is it most likely to be?
This stuff goes through my head alot when I'm out.
Would be a butterfly knife be a good pocket knife for utilitarian purposes?
Sooo...
I had 28 days later flash backs today lol
43 primates "escaped" from a lab in Beaufort South Carolina today lol...
Sooo....
Scenario (we usually think of 28 days later being a UK thing) and with the UK, containment is obviously much easier as you have at the minimum 40+ mikes of sea between the UK and the continent, not to mention pretty rugged terrain between England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales...
The USA east coast is not so isolated from the rest of the country, with zombie hoards being able to easily travel north, south, and east on the interstates.
Heck, primates don't have any natural predators in the northern American continent and could probably survive just fine against coyotes and mountain lions.
How would this scenario change your Oreo for those if you in the states? How would this affect our non us zombie preppers?
Taurus Judge revolver .410shotgun/45Long Colt 5 round cylinder. 13in barrel, for end hand-guard, pica-tinny rail on top for sight and pic rail on for-end for light/laser. No stock. Beyond home defense I think it’d be a great backpack or truck gun. It’s lightweight and devastating at close range (a-la home defense). As a bug out option I think it’d do well. It may also be legal in states with restrictive gun laws. What do y’all think?
I'm creating a event for steam game called From The Bunker in the style of 60 Seconds, but with a zombie theme, and an idea came to mind: it would be interesting to see how different people would react to the same situation. Here’s the scenario I came up with: imagine you’re 16 years old, and after waking up, you find yourself alone at home with no power. Later, you look out the window and see creatures that resemble distorted humans, devouring each other and occasionally glancing your way. How would you respond? What would you take with you to survive?
Only need a soda can, a sharperner tub? (Idk what they are called) a plastic straw and tape, works pretty good for a extremely budget whistle
You can make this for mental warfare or just communicating signals, you would be able to find all this in the apocalypse extremely easily
Its early June of 1944, the entire human population on the planet is infected with the Walking Dead virus and will reanimate between 1 minute and 8 hours after death. These Zombies aren't the standard TWD zombies but the faster, smarter season 1 zombies. How do things play out?
It's been a few weeks since you and a few other survivors got stuck on the upper floors of the building where you fled to. You were able to clear several floors and made them impregnable from zeds. In a stroke of luck, you found supplies that will last for months if you ration it properly.
As you try to go lower, the difficulty to clear each floor becomes harder and harder because of the amount of the undead, and everyone can observe that the streets are filled with zeds too.
Someone suggested that it might be better to expand horizontally. The chances that the upper floors of other buildings are relatively safer as the building were you residing, and there are more some good stuffs in there. Additionally, extra horizontal space might help in getting more rain water, you can even try to farm on the rooftops, you may be able to gather lots of soils from the pots you found.
The idea seems good for everyone, but how can you make a bridge between buildings? You have some materials found through excavanging the floors, but you can't just jump to the other buildings, especially the distance is as wide as the steets below.
I mean first of all they’re horrifying and second of all most of them are either bullet proof or too quick to be hit by anything
