/r/ZombieSurvivalTactics - a community for in-depth discussion about survival against zombies. We're ready. Are you?
Welcome to /r/ZombieSurvivalTactics!
This is a community to talk about survival against zombies, whether it is how you would make your way through a horde of zombies, or if your group decides to go against you and it becomes a riot! Possibly you're off the grid and you need to learn how to survive off the land. We have it all.
Come here and be ready for some good, well-thought-out scenarios and in-depth discussions!
Though zombie-based material inherently has some NSFW content, posts must be as safe for work as possible. This means no nudity, no excessive gore, no material promoting dangerous or illegal situations, etc. For Fridays, this will be somewhat more relaxed.
If you are going to post a link, video, or image make sure to phrase it as a question, topic of discussion, etc. Don't just post a link to stuff, a picture of gear, or a video you think is cool.
If you want to post your "zombie survival loadout/kit/bag" provide a written list of the items (if a picture is used, this list should include items not shown), Details (clear images can be an alternative for this), Description of the items (including your reasoning for showing them), and questions regarding said loadout including: "what do you like, what do you dislike, and what can be improved" With "rate my loadout" or similar questions being acceptable alternatives for the last question.
As a rule of thumb, stay away from talking about popular fiction plots. If there is a specific tactic used that you want to discuss then tread lightly; make sure to give as little of the story away and mark your post a spoiler.
Content must be somehow related to survival in a zombie setting. If you are looking for Call of Duty Zombies, Minecraft, or other video game-related content you are in the wrong place.
Memeing and shitposting of sub-related topics are allowed on Fridays only. This includes Innawoods Loadouts and "Choose Your [Gear]" image posts. Detailed loadout posts utilizing spreadsheets, detailed images and descriptions, Lighter Pack, and similar formats are permitted on other days.
"How could zombies exist" and "CWD Deer Zombies OMG" are topics we get a lot. It is fun to fantasize how zombies could exist but it has little to no bearing on how to deal with them tactically. They also frequently bring in unnecessary harassment of the mentally ill, those suffering from seizures or panic attacks, drug addicts, and those afflicted with actual real-world diseases, are false attention-grabbing news, or otherwise are intended for some type of marketing.
This means no movie/TV/book/similar media promotions, clickbait Cronic Wasting Disease or parasitic cordyceps articles, analysis of people dying from rabies, those suffering from mental illnesses or drug usage, calling people zombies as a result of political views, in character roleplay or cosplay pretending zombies are real, and the like.
This sub is for hypothetical discussion. There will also be disagreement and people will tell you your "foolproof" zombie plan is wrong. Try not to get too defensive, argue the points themselves, and please remain civil.
We will not tolerate pointless bickering, insults, name-calling, etc. This also means sexism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, radicalism, bullying, harassment, etc. aren't going to be tolerated. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without stooping to childish behavior.
This isn't really a rule but a general assumption to make discussion easier.
The "standard" zombie used in this sub is the slow undead variety. With notable examples including early George Romero Night of the living dead, Zombie Survival Guide/WWZ novel, The Walking Dead, Etc. If unspecified, it will be assumed you are talking about this style of zombie.
If you wish to discuss other zombies or "zombie adjacent" creatures that's fine but be sure to specify this. Otherwise you will be causing undo confusion. These might include: Fast zombies (28 Days Later), Magic zombies (D&D), Chicken zombies (CONPLAN 8888), Etc

Everyone always talks about their genius plan but I can't help and think about what people would do to cope. What silly things would yoy decide to do because you need to process?
I'd personally try to assemble a little fancy collection of things. A nice outfit, cigars, wine, make a little Old Timey parlour style room to pretend I'm fancy to cope with the fact that the world is falling apart. Pretend to have the best life ever in the worst point in time.
What stuff would you guys do to try and make the situation feel less bad?
I know it seems obvious that faster zombies would be harder to fight/kill/avoid on an individual level, but what if we looked at a zombie outbreak from a macroscopic view? Slower zombies would ironically spread faster and kill off humanity quicker. This is because slower zombies have two main advantages over faster zombies. The first is that they are more likely to infect you than outright kill you. A faster zombie is more likely to kill a human (and eat it a bit) before they are revived. That recently brought back corpse will be damaged and missing some pieces, and be essentially be pretty terrible at attacking and converting other people. If a zombie is a little slower though, the human is more likely to be able to escape with just a bite and will eventually turn into a 100% healthy intact zombie that can better convert others. This actually captures what happens in real life with the tranmission-virulence trade off in epidemiology. Essentially viruses will become less deadly or symptomatic to allow the host to be more active and better spread the disease through the population. The second advantage is that overtime, zombies will spread out more as they randomly walk around. The slower zombies will spread apart slower though, so their strength as a horde will last longer.
I built a simulation changing the zombie speed and how often humans fight, with special scenarios like "living" zombies compared to undead or situations where the infected humans kill themselves before turning. Below is a video I made going over the results, give it a watch for the full breakdown, but a summary is that as long as over 63% of the population is actively trying to kill zombies, we can survive at any zombie speed. When people don't attack at all, zombies moving at around 76% human speed wipe out humanity about 3% faster than zombies capable of full sprinting. Living-virus zombies spread the slowest because they only turn those who survive an encounter instead of also those they kill.
It's called the "Plommée"
I live in a city with farms outside.
If I turn up at a farm willing to work for shelter + food. Do you think they will let me in or shoot on sight?
I believe this is the best idea for a hand to hand zombie weapon. It would need a slight modification from original that I sketched out in this picture. If it has a hook shaped tooth it could be used to grab and pull objects. Or hooked onto something and be used for climbing. The other tooth on that same end could be used for stabbing. It could be used as a bludgeoning weapon or a bludgeoning weapon with a spike if your not worried about it getting stuck in a zombie skull. Also you could open almost any door with this. It has enough reach to keep you at a distance but also could be held differently if your in really close tight quarters. This weapon will be near impossible to break and does not require sharpening. IMO you can't beat this design
Is there anyone else that plans on hitting the water ways to escape, travel, bugout if need be. I have a canal in the back of my house. I can follow these canals and make my way to the intercostal water way if need be. I’m approx 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Once I hit the intercostal water way I pretty much got the whole east coast of Florida to travel. Can even head north to Georgia if I wanted to. There are plenty of islands to camp on. Can fish for food if need be. This is one of my plans of getting out of the area if need be. I would be using a 17 foot old town canoe. It holds 1,600 pounds. So I can load it up pretty good with everything I need.
And yes I know this will harder than I made it out to be. Running into other people in boats that want to play pirates. Or have already claimed some of the islands as theirs.
Anyone else got this type of plan?
Id love to get a brief synopsis on what you intend to do once you find out “its on” i.e Im raiding for food and ammo then heading home, stopping to block the main road behind me, then my brothers and i begin phase 2
What happens when medicines are no longer being made?
I came across a guy in the comments of another post and he said he has epilepsy which really got me thinking; what do people with life threatening medical conditions do?
They don’t deserve to succumb to the illness in my opinion. They didn’t ask to be born with the illness so they don’t deserve to die from it. At least in my mind.
We can’t necessarily create the medicines again unless that’s your expertise and even then most of our (American) resources are imported. Almost all of our medicines are chemicals made in a lab.
Personally, I have anxiety. Thankfully I don’t need to be medicated for it and the use of cbd gets me through my day just fine. If needed, I could grow the flower myself and extract the cbd/cbg from the bud and use that. Gather the oil from a lemon or peppermint plant and mix it in. Boom, got rid of the original taste.
What do other people do?
Hi all,
I wear glasses because I cannot see in the distance without them. So if my glasses somehow fall off my face I would be screwed imo. Without getting lasik surgery what kind of options do I have to ensure my glasses stay on for the full 7 years of the apocalypse?
The Dawn of the Dead remake and the Last of Us apocalypse both feature super dangerous and fast infected. Which apocalypse are you less likely to survive in?
Would you prefer to survive with just yourself and whatever resources you can find or would you try to save anyone you can?
Personally, if I had no family to help, I think i’d prefer to be on my own. My heart would want to save others but that’s more food, more water, more shelter and more resources you’ll be needing to find. I’m the type of person to go out into the shit to get what I need to survive. I wouldn’t want to have to share a small can of food with 8 people who could also be search for resources.
I may sound selfish but I’m surviving for myself, not for others. I wouldn’t kill others for their resources but I wouldn’t enjoy being responsible for the survival of others. That’s how you get killed
Aside from food, water and shelter, of course.
When all hell breaks loose and society needs rebuilding, a library is your best friend. It holds thousands of years worth of knowledge and they’re organized so finding the knowledge would be so much easier.
If it’s just you and maybe 20 people on a settlement, the chances of having a good electrician, plumber, blacksmith, farmer, etc. would probably be maybe 1 in 20. You reading this, would probably be one of the good sources in your group and while some of you know a hell of a lot about survival, some of you only know about types of zombies and are a damn good artist haha.
A library would be the greatest source for rebuilding society. Not many people think about that
A lot of people here seem to plan to go around looting houses and whatnot, prying open every locked door they find. Seems like a good way to find yourself on the wrong end of a gun to me. So then a simple question, do any of you have a method you intend to use to appear less/non-threatening? Maybe, by way of example, some kind of knock to check if a place is occupied before trying to tear down the door and getting a face-full of buckshot for your trouble?
After all, in an apocalypse scenario where you have desperate people willing to do just about anything - and with zombies and the like having to worry about people who are potentially infected - I don't think my... "hospitality" towards people prowling around my land would improve. I don't think most other people's would either. So if you're one of those who plans to go around prying up everything that's nailed down, do you have any plan to try to mitigate your risk?
Unfortunately no magic weapons or spells folks. Just standard non fiction medieval time period.
Zeds roam the earth! What weapons would a commoner use to defend themselves properly during these scary times?!
So everyone seems to think that hunting will be the best thing since sliced bread when the apoc hits. Maybe in the beginning, but after a few years I feel like over hunting would cause near extinction to alot of species of animals.
1 species i think that would live for AWHILE would be sea life, maybe. That being said though, how good is a fish meat only diet? I'm not talking about JUST fish. I mean fish is the only type of meat you eat besides your veggies and fruits if you can grow them.
I know with a rabbit only diet, with the lack of fats you can get sick from protein popoisoning (eating large amounts of protein without enough carbohydrates and fats) so I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks to fish only. You could switch it up to crab/mussels and clams if you are lucky or near a source of water that has those food sources but that's beside the point.
Fish only? Yay or nay? (Im a steak guy. I think I'd cry if I couldn't have red meat. But damn if lemon pepper or battered fish don't taste good as hell)
Uncle Jed's Iron

Last project out of the old shop.
Once your group has, say, over 15 survivors, pair them of into battle buddy-like groups of three. One weak one, 2 warriors. To many movies and shows depict weak, sniveling, emotional selfish idiots NOT killing related or befriended people who are turning. “Don’t kill him/her, it’s just a small bite!“ “Don’t tell them I got bit, it doesn’t even hurt“
This can get your entire crew killed. At no point in time should a group have more than one weak person. Weakness does not refer to physicality, btw, it’s a measure of psychological strength and the willingness to kill those who are beyond help. I am sorry if this came over ranty, but I just finished (no spoilers) The Walking Dead S3 E8, if you know, you know.
This may be dark, but if you're all alone, no one else left, and hope seems lost, then would it even be worth it to be alive? The apocalypse is in full swing and there's nothing left to do. What's keeping you from taking that trusty gun of yours and letting it take it's final life? If you know what I mean
How do we feel about safe rooms and safe houses?
What would be the first place you go in an apocalypse? I'd say Home Depot, as it has building supplies, vehicles, and various other things that could be used as weapons, of course depending on where I was when the outbreak started of course. tell me your thoughts
can zombies be killed by pouring mineral acids on their head ( as shown in walking dead that heads their weakness)
or
can they die by making them swallow cyanide
I think a slingshot could be a viable option to penetrate the skull of a human zombie. I believe there have been folks that have tried to puncture the human skull (using ballistic gel around an artificial skull) with standard steel ball bearings without much success. Generally penetrating the skin but not being able to crack through the skull. I think the slingshot is right but not the ammo. I feel steel shaped like a cube may be able to crack through the skull and into the brain. What do you guys think? And anybody out there want to give it a go and present us with the results?
So the zombie apocalypse has kicked off. What do you do with your family members or even group members that suffer from mental illness, I.e. schizophrenia, severe depression. Even autism.
I’m talking about the severe cases where they are going to get someone killed of hurt. The manic depression person that just lays there and cries, and is absolutely usless. The autistic kid that can’t be quit, is loud, and is always doing dumb shit to stim. The schizophrenic that thinks everyone is trying to kill him and is hearing voices. The pharmacy is empty, no meds to be found to help stabilize these people.
Do you kill them, exile them from the group, lock them up, or try to keep them safe somehow.
