This beer slaps hard.

Lived in Madison in my 20s and it's always good to grab something from there to remember the insane nonsense I did back then. Anyways, this is a really tasty beer. One Barrel has always been one of my top three favorite Madison breweries and they hit it out of the park with this one.

I Wrote a Book About Life in Wisconsin—Would Love Your Thoughts!

Hey everyone! My name is Wayne Larson, and I just published a book called Grillin’ in ’da Blizzard. It’s all about the funny, heartwarming, and sometimes absurd experiences that make living in Wisconsin so special—like trying to grill brats in a snowstorm, the sacred tradition of Friday night fish fries, and those never-ending debates about cheese curds. 🍻❄️

I tried to capture the humor and spirit of our Midwest life, and I’d be thrilled if you gave it a read. If you’re someone who’s braved a polar vortex or tried to cheer for the Packers while grilling in January, I hope it’ll bring you some laughs.

If you decide to check it out, I’d love to hear your thoughts. And if you have your own Wisconsin stories or traditions, please share—I’m always up for hearing a good tale from a fellow Sconnie!

Staghorn - Bad Batch?

I look forward to Staghorn every year but got my first six pack last weekend and the taste seemed off. Tasted almost skunky, which is odd. I was wondering if anyone else ran into this or if I maybe ran into a pack that maybe got mishandled or something.

Great Taste, is it still the weekend long event it used to be?

I haven't been since before COVID, but we used to make a 2 or 3 day event of it. We would haul our ass to New Glarus for their special release each day. Hit up the Bells takeover at Maduro for some Habanero Oberon and black note. There was always the Toppling Goliath takeovers, and that German restaurant with the semi low key BA Abraxis tap. And of course, imo, the highlight of the weekend was Funk Factory's party. They're gone, but I don't see Black Rose doing anything that weekend.

In fact the GTMW website has a pretty small list of preparty events compared to the huge, 4 or 5 days of takeovers that I used to scroll through. So am I missing something? Have all those amazing events been lost to the changing tides of craft beer or a relic of pre-COVID times? I want to attend but half the fun seems gone to me.

Do any breweries near Milwaukee collect and reuse the hard plastic six-pack connectors?

I have a ton. I know they claim to be recyclable, but seems like they would be really easy to reuse.

Kentucky Common

I just tried a Kentucky Common beer for the first time this weekend (courtesy of Ore Docks Brewing in Marquette, Mi.). I thought it was mighty fine! I'd actually never even heard of the style before.

Are there any brewers in the Madison or Milwaukee area that are turning out this interesting style?

Does Rhinelander have that "Minhas" taste?

I never mind a cheap, American Adjunct lager on a hot summer day. In fact I enjoy most of them.

I frequently walk past the 30 packs of Rhinelander at my local Woodman's, and would love to try it, but the fact that it's now a Minhas beer frightens me. Everything they touch turns to crap.

Have you had it? Does it have that distinct Minhas shit flavor? Those of you who have tried many Minhas beers surely know what I'm talking about.

Fresh Lager and Pilsner

I am visiting Madison Wisconsin next week and have become a connoisseur of fresh Lager, Pilsner and Ale -Where would be my best bet to procure these? Preferably not crawlers, fresh packed six packs

Canadian visiting Great Taste of the Midwest

Curious if any fellow Untappd users on this sub that plan on attending? Is it mostly locals or are there some from out of state / international?

New Glarus Enigma?

I just recently found out that NG released Enigma '23 last fall - first time this beer has been out in like 6-7 years. I know there's probably zero chance of success at this point, but if anyone knows of a store that still has stock, I'd love to get my hands on some!

Has anyone seen New Glarus IPA on the shelves yet?

New Glarus IPA is one of my favorite beers they make and it was supposed to be released the first week of June, according to their calendar.

I've been checking the stores in the Hudson, WI area and haven't seen it on the shelves yet. Has anyone seen it on the shelves in their area yet?

Day trip would you rather? Sunshine and Tyranena or Steeltank and Brewfinity?

Planning on taking a day trip to stop at two breweries with the family post kids nap. We are deciding between Lake Mills and Oconomowoc, probably have enough time for a beer or two at two breweries. Lake Mills would be Sunshine and Tyranena and Oconomowoc would be Steeltank and Brewfinity. What would you guys recommend if you have experience with any of these breweries. Thanks!

New Glarus Brewing hours

I noticed that New Glarus brewing is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Is this so even during the summer? Also noticed that they're only open until 5 pm on the weekdays

Bitter or ESB, anywhere within 200 miles of Madison or Milwaukee?

I'm jonesing really badly for a true English bitter or ESB. Can someone point me in the right direction??

I did try Illuminated's "Her Majesty's Satanic Request" recently, and it was awful! Nothing like one would find in a rural English pub.

I am drinking Old Speckled Hen in the meantime, but surely there must be SOMEONE brewing this style in Wisconsin, right? Right??

Thanks in advance!

TIL Wisconsinite is a Hefeweizen style beer brewed by Lakefront Brewery that uses water, malt, yeast, and hops, ALL indigenous to Wisconsin. The owner explains how that's even possible, and it's pretty interesting (at 24:57)

Hey all of you Wisconsin beer fanatics. My Beer Review channel (on YouTube) is back at it again this year with another batch of 16 Wisconsin beers facing off - bracket tournament style - to see which one comes out on top. We've got brews this year from Lakefront, 1840, Third Space, Titletown, Foxtown, Sahale, Perspective, Eagle Park, Oliphant, Raised Grain, Ale Asylum, 3 Sheeps, Amorphic, Lion's Tail, MKE Brewing, and Cocoon Brewing. Many different styles in this year's group, and also many of these beers were chosen BY the brewery themselves for entry. May the best beer win!

Check out our "Selection Sunday" video here (2024 Wisco Beer Bracket - Selection Sunday! (youtube.com) where we randomly build out this year's bracket. We will be releasing videos of each battle all week (starting Thursday) in line with some of the great basketball you might be watching as well.
