Here's what I think it means---in high school there's a "yearbook staff" who creates the yearbook containing all of the class photos, club and sports events, etc. At some point near the end of the year, they have to "close" the yearbook--which means they stop updating it with the latest information--so they can send it to the publisher. Inevitably there will be some events that will not make it into the yearbook because they happened after the yearbook was "closed" (i.e., sent to the publisher).
Is that what he means? Like, keep striving to accomplish things instead of resting on your laurels?
I know he is showing appreciation but trying to figure out where this comes from as I've never seen anyone put their hand over their heart except when pledging allegiance. I couldn't find an answer online. Thanks!
