‘Public Castration’ made me do it…

Yesterday I decided that my old trash can was steel percussion…and this morning I put on Public Castration Is A Good Idea. It served its purpose up until Anything for You.

Wait, was I a moron for starting with Filth?

So, i just listened to all Swans albums before they reformed. So, Self Titled EP all the way to Swans Are Dead. But I actually started with Filth because I didn't know the Self Titlrd existed until I was all the way in Time Is Money. I... Thought it was a bit of a mess but a mess I actually sorta enjoyed, but according to this sub starting with Filth is a TERRIBLE idea???

I mean, now it's too late to tell me that, but still, was I stupid for going chronologically? I always do this to all new bands I listen to so hearing this be a actually pretty common sentiment here kinda shocked me.

I bought this artwork from William Schaff (Creator of the artwork from GYBE LYSFLATH). Inspired by The Glowing Man and Bring the Sun / Toussaint l’ouverture

His mind is amazing and i'm so happy with the result. This is the second artwork i've bought from him and i'm always so impressed by his work.

He calls this artwork "The Human Ouroboros". He added the comment that it's showing the man's cyclical nature of self destruction.

Hope you guys like it!

the fact that Swans has been able to get a bunch of ADHD-ridden zoomers to listen to 35 minute long songs with barely any lyrics is the best proof of how good they are.

🚨 UK HOMIES 🚨

This place has a few copies of Feel Good Now for £13 on vinyl. I’ve ordered a lot from them in the past so personally no reason to think it’s a scam. Go cop it!

The Glowing Man (song) interpretation

So it starts with

He's a real go-getter, getter He's a real heartbreaker, breaker He's a real head-splitter, splitter

So basically describing a kick ass being

Each time the being (the glowing man) is described it has that angelic voice in the background.

In Swans music the sun is used as a symbol for god (or at least a powerful force). This song uses a section from bring the sun and all the while having that angelic voice in the background which I think implies that the glowing man becoming a type of god like being.

I’m not sure how Joseph directly ties into the song to be honest. Maybe saying that above all else you should (or the glowing man does) trust what your mind says not other peoples opinions.

Next section confiming the glowing man’s identity saying that he is a glowing man a growing man and a nothing man.

Growing is wanting knowledge and understanding Nothing is accepting meaninglessness Result is glowing man

What is what at the end could be confusion over the way the world looks like after the transformation

Idk maybe I’m reading too much into it but I think it makes some sense.

Edit: maybe no yes is his aversion to accepting his transformation

“a live album is in the works, to be available ASAP”….MG posted on Instagram today

“In a strange coincidence, the final shows in Brooklyn listed below constitute exactly, to the day, one year of touring in support of the SWANS album, The Beggar. As is usual with us, the material that we have been performing has morphed steadily and has become something else entirely. We recently recorded much of this new music as well as new songs as the beginning of an album, in progress. Much work still to do on it over the coming months. In the meantime, a live album is in the works, to be available ASAP… As was once said by a far greater person than myself: I’m not dead yet, ya bastids!”

Angels of light we are him

Gira says this record is for Joseph, who is in every song & I was wondering if anyone knew anything more on the Joseph lore?

Swans Deep Dive, Vol. 5: Young God EP (1984)

#SUMMARY:

  • Rating: 3.5/10
  • Favorite: “Raping A Slave”
  • Least Favorite: “This Is Mine”

#REVIEW:

After my relatively disappointing revisit of Cop, I expected to detest its even slower-paced little brother Young God. That isn’t quite what happened, but this EP still left me feeling quite conflicted. It started out surprisingly strong with the immersively oppressive “I Crawled”, before the even more engaging follow-up “Raping A Slave” came along and got me even more invested. The first half of this miniature record illustrates an apocalyptic microcosm, with each gargled scream that scrapes across the grotesque soundscape detailing the corners of a hellish, rotting world. These tracks aren’t masterpieces, but they felt legitimately interesting in a way that I hadn’t remembered from my very first attempt to digest this EP a few months ago. However, the reasons for my sour predisposition towards this record became clear one again as I made it into the second pair of songs. Similarly to its predecessor, neither track from this selection is “bad” on its own, but they lost the bits of nuance that made the previous 12 minutes feel worthwhile. Aside from the unexpected dynamic shift at the end of “Young God” and the relatively unique vocal delivery on “This Is Mine”, this now-familiar vibe of slow-motion brutality quickly overstayed its welcome, and I ended up feeling tired and disinterested by the end in spite of its short runtime. I surprised even myself by the quick turnaround of opinion that I had during this listen, so I gave it another shot later that day, and I ended up already waiting for the EP to be over before its first track even concluded. If anything, Young God has made me appreciate Cop more for its sonic diversity despite its crucially inconsistent tempo, although I would still only give it an extra 0.5-1.0 points rather than a whole reevaluation. Overall, I’m glad that this is the final primary release of Swans’ pure no-wave era, because I don’t think I would’ve stuck around for much longer if I had to keep subjecting myself to increasingly self-defeating exercises in misery. The raw negative emotions and horrific past experiences that Gira was expressing throughout this phase of their careers was still genuine, but the artistic lengths he went to reflect them had diminishing returns in terms of legitimately engaging music.

Just saw Swans for the first time. Absolutely MONSTROUS show! I was in the front row and they were so fucking intense that the speaker in front of me literally started smoking. The smell of burnt plastic wafted through the venue and peaked near the crescendo of the final song! Madness! 🔥

Boston show appreciation

Wow. That was hands down one of the best concerts I've been to. When I've seen some of my favorite bands play live, despite how enjoyable the music is, the mix is usually not the greatest. Even with how loud the show was it sounded incredible, every musician sounded perfect and clear (at least from where I was standing).

No concert videos could compare to the real thing. I think Michael Gira said that Youtube videos are trash because they have 0 low end. I thought the sound would be more brutal at the show but they had a great balance of beautiful music and abrasive walls of sound, and extremely groovy sections as expected. Gotta shoutout bassist Chris Pravdica as well because I didn't realize until seeing them live just how much of these songs he absolutely carries, and I can't imagine the amount of training needed to have that much stamina between laying down grooves for tens of minutes to shredding for long sections. There were a couple incredible moments in the show where I was nearly moved to tears because it became so apparent that all the decades of work Gira has put into his music came to fruition in an amazing way, with his team of unbelievably skilled musicians alongside him giving it their all. From front to back the whole show was captivating and I was shocked that 2 hrs 15 mins had gone by, it felt like time flew right by.

I rememeber some interview where Gira said he has to work all the time so he can make sure he can do what he was put on earth to do, and he really has gone and done it. I'd be hard-pressed to think of that many other bands that have been able to have such complete and total mastery of sound. (No homo)

At 41, I'm joining in on this mad dark venture.

What The F am I getting into here!? :-)

Had a listen through 6 or 7 albums (Some are very long!)

Decided to buy the following for my collection because I found these most accessible and within my current taste. Saying that I Imagine I might end up with TO BE KIND because I gave that a listen one afternoon and had some 'moments' with it despite it being outside my comfort zone of music listening. Need to get my head around those later albums.

Different versions of "Laugh"?

I understand there may not be a known answer, but is there any reason why "Laugh" on streaming services (I'm not sure if it does it on the Filth 3xCD) has that weird pause at the beginning where it does that tape starting effect twice? It almost sounds like an intentional edit because it's kind of on the beat, but it sounds weird and not even the version they put on their YT channel does that, so I'm just curious as to if it's a mistake or an alternate mix.
