Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artefact. Leader André Breton was explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was above all a revolutionary movement.
Surrealism developed out of the Dada activities during World War I and the most important center of the movement was Paris. From the 1920s onward, the movement spread around the globe, eventually affecting the visual arts, literature, film, and music of many countries and languages, as well as political thought and practice, philosophy, and social theory.

Disclaimer: I’m not a pro AI bot, I haven’t completely formed my opinion on AI art yet. I’m a painter and consider myself a surrealist. I got into a debate with a pro AI art friend and he said something that I wanted to hear other people’s opinions on.
He said for surrealism specifically, if the goal is to use art to access the unconscious and illustrate dreams, wouldn’t AI be more efficient than, say, painting or collages? His point is that AI art takes less time and one could insert word prompts relating to their dream (e.g. man standing outside window with a clock as head) and receive images that illustrate that dream perfectly, wouldn’t that be more sufficient than painting that dream?
Basically his argument is that if the goal of surrealism is to make art depicting scenes of the dream world and the unconscious, then does it matter what the process or medium of getting to the result is? In other words, why not use AI if it creates images of the unconscious more efficiently?
What’s are your thoughts?
