The saints

Hey everyone I posted some photos during the Carlton game rd 24.. was a great evening as a NSW saint.

I think I’ll post for shits and giggles again but don’t you just want to appreciate the players on our list. We are an unsuccessful club but by god do we have spirit, more than the rest. Let’s keep that. Let’s be supporters because this group of players have every chance to get us another flag.

My grandfather wrote the history of the saints of 1966, Jules Feldmann, it’s called ‘The point of it all’. That all we need 1 point more than the rest.

Let’s cheer loud, support hard and get our silverware be it this year or next or next. It’s coming, big ups for us this season and forever.

Ill love the saints forever

Big love

St Kilda ‘25 List Analysis

Hey Sainters!

I’ve been reviewing each clubs lists this off-season basically trying to see what is needed to improve the side and start competing for the premiership.

I am a saints fan myself and was lucky enough to be joined by Jake from Saints TV, so it’s not just raw stats if that’s not your vibe..

In terms of the stats, I compare players against the ‘24 AFL average in the same position.
I’ve also collected player averages from the last 5 years, filtered just the Top 4 teams and then measured the relationship between above average results and winning.
So with that I can also compare our players against a Top 4 Player in the same role from the last 5 years.

I’m keen to hear your thoughts on my assessment of our list! (good or bad)

Thanks!
Woody WSD

Saints Depth Chart 2025

Here's the customary pre-season depth chart. Positions are ordered by player quality (at least as perceived by me). Some players appear twice, asterisk(*) denotes when it's their secondary position, e.g. ruck is a primary position for Marshall while key forward is a secondary position.

Key defenders: Wilkie, Howard, Caminiti*, Schoenmaker, Cordy, Tauru, Barrat

Small/rebound defenders: Sincs, Nas, Webster, Stocker, McLennan, Travaglia, Hastie

Inside mids: Steele, Macrae, Philipou, Clark, Windhager, Jones, Garcia, Dow, Stocker*, Hall, Boxshall

Outside mids / wingers: Sincs*, Wood, Hill, Wilson, Henry*, Byrnes, Carroll, O'connell(?), Armstrong(?)

Key forwards: King, Marshall*, Sharman, Caminiti, Wood*, Keeler*

Small/pressure forwards: Higgins, Henry, Owens, Butler, Collard, Said

Rucks: Marshall, Boyd, Keeler, Heath, Dodson

So what do we think? Here are some thoughts from me:

  • Dearth of quality experience in the engine room, hopefully getting more games there into Pou, Windy, Garcia and the other youngsters helps that
  • Beyond Marshall we now have zero true rucks who have ever played an AFL game. I hope Boyd or Keeler get a chance this year, will also allow Marshall to do some damage up forward.
  • If Travaglia plays in his preferred half back position, who makes room? There's been talk of Nas spending more time on the wing, but I'd actually prefer to see Sincs move more into the middle. We have enough quality for outside midfielders in my opinion. Sincs is more versatile and will be more effective at stoppages where we need the most reinforcements. Ultimately I think we'll see a bit of both, but that's where I lean.

Cheers all!

Open Training Session Question

My 6 year old son is really keen to go to open training on Wednesday to see the team and get his guernsey signed. We live about one hour away and I haven’t been to a training session before.

What are his chances of getting his top signed? Will we have to make sure we get there really early? I’m not sure how much his 6 year old attention span will be able to handle.

Thanks for any help and advice you can give

G'day Sainters, it's time for us to wake up from our off-season slumber and get this season moving! Is anyone not going to gather round, and has a member code they would be willing to share?
GA ticket allocation has been exhausted, and my mate and I are trying to get to the StK v GWS game (we're flying over from Sydney)

St Kilda Fixture: Rating the Challenge

I've put together something of a challenge rating for each game in the Saint's 2025 fixture using historical data. All data has been pulled from AFL Tables.

Method

I transformed St Kilda's winrate against each team (using the last 5 games played) and thier winrate at each location (using up to the last 20 games played) into a rating out of 11, with a winrate of 0% resulting in a rating of 11 and a winrate of 100% resulting in a rating of 1. Venues with very few games to draw from (like Traeger and Norwood) were given a winrate of 50%, the team winrates were also weighted by a factor of 2 to represent that the team is more important than the location. I then combined the two ratings and turned them into a percentage of the total points available, which was then transformed back into a rating, only this time with a higher percentage resulting in a higher score.

For reference, a team that St Kilda has a 50% winrate against being played at a venue they have a 50% winrate at would result in a challenge rating of 8.

Key: 1-3 (Very Easy), 4-6 (Easy), 7-9 (Moderate), 10-12 (Hard), 13-15 (Very Hard)

Obviously there's only soo much that can be gleaned through the past, and performances in previous years don't dictate future performances. But I thought having a look at it from the perspective of the Saint's performance in recent years, taking the venues into consideration, would be an interesting little experiment.
