About sleep apnea:

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep. Each pause in breathing, called an apnea, can last from at least ten seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour.

Can’t get out of bed.

Hi all I'm 18 (M), for 3 months I have struggled with extreme fatigue and dysautonomia to the point where I am fully housebound. I have been referred for a sleep study but there is a very long waiting period until then so I'd like some advice in the short term, I have some questions.

  1. My fatigue hit me one day and was not a gradual increase, is it possible for sleep apnea to be suddenly very apparent and debilitating?
  2. both blood tests for red cell count and platelet volume returned very high results, is this suggestive of sleep apnea?
  3. prior to diagnosis did anyone have dysautonmic symptoms such as tachycardia, heat intolerance, or exercise intolerance similar to POTS.

I understand this is a lot any advice is much appreciated!

Ahi about 20,5

... ist that much ? I read that there are people with 80 or over 100.

I have PAC/PVC and hope that it will get better with CPAP therapy. I am currently using a mouthpiece from Amazon, and I feel better. But the PACs are still bad, even immediately after waking up. I'm starting CPAP therapy on Tuesday, but I'm taking APAP.

Low AHI, not sure what to do

I recently had an at home sleep study done because I was having excessive daytime sleepiness, headaches when I woke, waking up multiple times a night to pee, and brain fog/memory issues. The results came back and to my surprise only showed a 7 AHI, or mild sleep apnea. My sleep doctor said she can still order me a CPAP to try but I guess I’m just confused how my AHI is so low with the extent of the symptoms I’m having. Are at home studies not accurate? Can you have that low of a AHI and still be that impacted? I guess the other question is, anyone else have this low of an AHI and still got a CPAP? Does it help?

Minor success, need further advice! (Mouth breather/deviated septum)

I have mild sleep apnea (6 AHI without CPAP, 2.5 with CPAP) and have been using my CPAP for four months now, but with only minor improvements. As the title suggests, I have a deviated septum and pollen sensitivity, so my right nostril is frequently congested.

However, on two or three sporadic nights, I woke up feeling surprisingly energized. I believe this is because I kept my mouth closed during sleep—I woke up breathing through my nose and didn’t have any drool or dry mouth.

One of those good nights seemed random, but on another, I used a chin strap. It worked well for that night, but not the next. I suspect my issues stem from mouth breathing, but I’m open to other suggestions. For context, I’ve been consistently using nasal sprays to manage congestion.

Here are my questions:

  1. For those with deviated septums and using a full-face mask, have you tried mouth taping while wearing the mask?
  2. Should I consider surgery, such as turbinate reduction? Could that help with my symptoms?
  3. What other strategies have worked for you to improve CPAP effectiveness and reduce mouth breathing?

I feel like I’m close to consistently experiencing the benefits of restful sleep and waking up energized, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also, this the mask I'm currently using: AirFit F40.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty WITH septorhinoplasty. Thoughts/experiences?

Has anyone had both surgeries at the same time, and what was that like? Specifically, in terms of not being able to breathe through the nose, or use a CPAP device?

Stats: Severe lifelong OSA (55/hour), F46.

Question about implant

Edit: if i wanted to look like an elephant I’d go to the Halloween store.

I was diagnosed with middle of the road sleep apnea probably 6-8yrs ago by a dentist trying to sell a $1500 mouth guard. My apnea is now considerably worse. I have already convered my max out of pocket for insurance for the year. I know they’ll try to jam me into the CPAP but I have claustrophobia and will not be able to handle.

Any suggestions on how to speed this process so I can get an implant done before end of the year? Thanks for any info!

Am I going to die? (UPDATE: i got my report!)

Hello everyone, I decided to take some of your device advice and call the sleep center for my report. Crazy that they had it and I could have accessed it this whole time (wonder why they didn't tell me that the first time I called). Here are some of my results:

AHI: 14 (Supine: 20)

RDI: 16 (Supine: 22)

O2 nadir: 86%

REM latency: 400 minutes

REM: 25 minutes

For reference I slept the whole 8 hours and have a BMI of 26. It's very interesting to see all the data on how I slept! Although I don't really know what it means in terms of my health. Thank you all for your helpful insight.

How do you guys function during the day without caffeine?

Hey all as title said my sleep apnea is so bad that doctor never seen those numbers and told me its a equivalent of 1 to 2 hours a sleep a day. fastfoward to today I lost health insurance have prescription but can't afford bipap machine even used. As im so tired throughout the day that unless I drink ton of caffeine I can't function. I been trying to find a job and I guess im just to tired I don't no. As this is causing me to lose everything. I was door dashing but was getting bad to where I would have to go home as I be falling asleep. Where I live I can't get free insurance I tried and healthcare. gov site want 300 month for cheapest plan im just looking for reccomndations as I was on a really good track of losing weight was 600 now down to 500 and because im so tired I can't really exercise outside walking little bit around the house. its just so weird I wake up fine then 1 to 2 hours later Im exhausted.

WatchPat vs SleepImage conflicting results

Lofta Sleep Report (WatchPat)

  • Diagnosis: Severe obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI): 50.3 (severe, indicating frequent apneas/hypopneas per hour).
  • Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI): 56.2 (includes additional breathing irregularities).
  • Oxygen Saturation: Minimum of 75%, suggesting frequent drops in oxygen levels.
  • Recommendation: Auto-CPAP therapy, along with possible alternative therapies if CPAP is intolerable.

SleepImage Ring Test

  • Diagnosis: No significant sleep-disordered breathing.
  • Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI): 3.5 (well below the threshold for sleep apnea).
  • Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI): Not noted as abnormal.
  • Oxygen Saturation: Mean of 97%, with a minimum of 95%, indicating stable oxygen levels.
  • Recommendation: No therapy indicated. Suggests considering an in-lab polysomnography if there's concern over potential false-negative results.

I’m very confused by the significant difference in results between the two tests. Do you have any thoughts on why there’s such a large discrepancy and which one I should trust? I had one of my worst nights of sleep when using the WatchPAT, but I slept much better with the SleepImage ring. I understand that the WatchPAT is considered more accurate due to its multiple sensors.

My doctor got back to me....

Alright, so I posted about my sleep apnea a week or two ago; thinking about getting surgery. I even mentioned this to the nurse I was talking to about it. They got back to me today and told me that surgery is no longer an option, as I was told that surgery didn't do anything at all and they medical community got rid of it as a whole.

I got told that it was mostly up to the sleep study team, but the nurse told me that there was two options still; which either losing weight ( I prefer this one ) or get put on a machine. Now, I am kinda glad that I don't have to go under the knife again. Now, I'm a big guy. Both in height and size, so having this come up as a first option is no surprise.

My parents used to snore like a couple of chainsaws, and they were both heavy set. My mother got stomach staple surgery, and according to my aunt; her snoring stopped all together. I got awhile before my appointment, but I did learn something interesting that I didn't know about.

So, one of the things that can help with sleep apnea is to sleep on your stomach and or side. Funny enough, I actually do sleep on my stomach and I didn't know it can help with it.

First night was complete failure

I think there is a lot wrong that goes beyond it just being the first night. On my app, it says that I only had the machine in for an hour and 45 minutes. With the exception of getting up for about 20 minutes around 1 am, I slept from 12 am to 6:30. I did do a check several times to make sure the mask was sealed, which it says it was. Report this morning says to “check mask seal” and that I had 16 events/hour, which is consistent with my at home sleep study. When I woke up, my nose was extremely sore, stuffy, and I was just as exhausted as usual. I did struggle with hearing the machine on and off through the night. My husband says I was making gasping sounds. I have the mask that’s just the nasal pillows.

I go through Aerocare. As promised, they did call to check in. I feel they did not believe me when I said the machine was on most of the night. We made a plan for me to call Monday for a new mask if there is no improvement.

I’ll be raw here- I feel extremely disappointed after a YEAR of waiting for a diagnosis and then treatment. I am bone exhausted. I’m terrified this isn’t going to work and that I’m just going to be condemned to die a slow death. I feel like maybe I’m just too stupid to figure it out( or exhausted?) and even though I sat through the class and watched all the videos, etc, I must be doing it wrong somehow still. Or could something be wrong with how the machine is reading? Am I going to get it repossessed? Thanks for listening. Just feeling so hopeless right now.

Does anyone have experience with SleepImage? Is it reliable?

I was referred to a sleep clinic for sleep onset insomnia and wanted an in-lab test to diagnose issues with falling asleep. The doctor said I needed to take an at-home test first to determine whether I had OSA or not. The results came back, and I don’t really understand them. The data says I fell asleep almost immediately on lying down, so the doctor thinks that I don’t need any further tests for sleep onset insomnia. The issue is, my partner confirms I did not immediately fall asleep on any of the nights. This led me to ask the doctor about how reliable the sleep tracking is on the device since the entire reason for the referral was inability to fall asleep. The doctor was pretty dismissive, addressed none of my questions, and cut the call short saying I could schedule an in-person study if I had any concerns with the at-home test. This has left me with quite a few questions outstanding.

  • Has anyone had experience with SleepImage? Was it accurate in your case?

  • According to the study, I have severe sAHI3% (36), but all of the other metrics seem to be either normal or mild. sAHI4% is 3. Fragmentation is 9%. Sleep Efficiency is 92%. SQI is 60. TD90 is 2%. TD88 is 0%. I wasn’t able to get clarification on any of these and what they mean for my health, and obviously treatment isn’t happening since the doctor only gave me the option of an in-person study. Should I be concerned about these numbers? Do they need immediate follow-up?

  • The doctor also said they don’t provide the raw data directly to patients. Is this normal?

Oxygen dips right when falling asleep

So this is fun. Every night as I start to fall asleep my oxygen will drop down to 84%. Once I’m asleep it will steady above 90 typically but it’s consistent. I wear an oxygen alarm and it goes off every time I fall asleep. Cpap is not doing much for me. Anyone else deal with this? I record my pulse and oxygen every night. Sometimes it will stay low for like a minute. Right when I wake up and take a deep breath it will bounce back up. Just very scary.

Waking up with my heart racing, gasping for air and just had my first ever sleep paralysis. Doctor says it's just anxiety, any advice?

I've been in a pretty bad shape for the last couple of months, suddenly waking up with tachycardia and now every night i'm afraid to go to sleep. I have a heart condition so fear is basically controlling my life, i'm getting severe brain fog, dry mouth and even speech issues for some reason.

My cardiologist said it's not heart-related, neurologist thinks it must be anxiety but i'm worried about getting into sleep medication after experiencing sleep paralysis this week, afraid that i might not wake up if everything happens simultaneously.

After doing some research i found this subreddit and a lot of the stories here sound like what i'm going through. I'm fairly healthy, i do not usually exercise but am not overweight, don't drink or smoke and AFAIK i don't snore. The only thing i can think of is that around the same time this started i've had developed reflux. I do take pantoprazole but it's not doing much and i'm not sure if it would cause these symptons anyway.

I scheduled another cardiologist and an ENT doctor but i worry of it simply being dismissed again.

Would love some advices from you guys, i've been feeling really lost.

What a stupid doctor

Age 30m I have been to this pulmonologist i asked him for a sleep study in lab. I had sleep study done at home which ahi of 9.5 and showed sleep of 9 hours. But i was awake till 3 am and slept for like 3 hours. So i visited this new pulmonologist i told him i feel fatigue and day time sleepiness with anxiety and depression. He said that i am enjoying my life and have nothing to do how can a doctor say that i am on anxiety medications. He told me to set a goal in life and follow it. I cried a lot after coming home i thought my problems were from sleep apnea and may be i can get a in lab sleep study and can fix it. I dont know what to do

I am having memory issues daytime fatigue and sleepiness i am on meds for sleep but they dont help i had a echo ekg pft all normal.

Do doctors behave like this does anyone had a experience like this. He was clearly mocking me. I felt like a looser now i think may be i am The lowest o2 was 88%. Rdi was15.

Do people suddenly develop this??

Help!

Healthy 40(M) Normally sleep ok, not great, but ok. Occasional snorer if I’m really tired.

Woke up at 1am from a dream of suffocating and struggling to breathe. Thought I was having a heart attack at first but just laid still until my body regulated to normal. Every time I fall asleep, I immediately stop breathing and wake up almost right away, often with some sort of drowning/suffocating/choking dream. And I’m lightheaded when I wake up, heart pounding. I’m having no anxiety or severe stress. No meds, drugs, or alcohol. No medical conditions. Only thing different is I was working in some dust yesterday and my throat and lungs feel a bit dry and congested. But I can breath fine and deeply when awake.

Has anyone had this? Is this sleep apnea? Trying to go back to sleep but last time I did woke up gasping and thinking “oh no I should have woken my wife because now I’m dead”.

Not normally a person who worried about this kind of thing.

TL;Dr Does this come on suddenly and severely with no prior history?

Husband has sleep apnea but won't wear mask

My husband recently told me he got tested for sleep apnea around 7 years ago and was told he has it, but refused to do anything about it. He says he doesn't want to wear a mask. His snoring is out of control. I don't sleep. Is there any other alternatives to a mask? He doesn't stay on his side very well. I'm going insane

Pregnant & suspected sleep apnea. Sore raw throat/mouth remedies?

I have a sleep study tomorrow & am pregnant in my 3rd Trimester.

Anyways, any remedies for this awful sore throat/mouth? I know it's from sleeping with my mouth open all night & choking (it constantly wakes me up).

Sometimes I wake up and I feel like I can’t breathe no matter what I do … scary

I’ve suffered from sleep apnea for quite some time . I suffer from allergies and I would often sleep with my mouth open causing me to have episodes . I started using allergy meds and nasal strips and they significantly improved my symptoms but this thing still happens to me … Sometimes I wake up and I truly can’t breathe . I am not emitting any sounds but I feel like I can’t breathe so I start breathing very deeply to feel better … maybe one deep breathe , then two , three … I feel dizzy, sometimes I’m shaking and no matter how many deep breathes I take the feeling doesn’t go away immediately but it takes a little while and it’s the scariest feeling ever

Not even taking deep breaths works ? I still feel exactly like I did as i first woke up . It doesn’t happen every night but it’s what makes me consider using a CPAP cuz I am terrified

Question about the step-by-step process from sleep study to CPAP

I am 5'10 and about 174 lbs. I have had sleep problems for over a decade. I have had 2 or 3 sleep studies done (including a Cornell Sleep study). They are usually just 1 night sleep studies. I was told that if during the sleep study, there was data showing that I needed a CPAP, or showed signs of apnea, that they would wake me up and fit me for a mask. That never happened during any of the sleep studies.

I think that I would benefit from a at home study. When I'm with all those wires during the official studies at those centers, I never get a proper state, so I'm not sure how a test can even be done efficiently and correctly.

I'm just trying to figure this out.

Step 1: Order and do that home test

Step 2: If I have a result showing that I can benefit from some sort of CPAP, then I will eventually get a CPAP machine. (I have some insurance, but I'm also game to the option of buying used.)

Any guidance that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Private messages are welcome as well.

Sleep apnea while awake?

I’ve searched through and through on this sub and can not find anyone here who made a post about this so I apologize If this has already been asked but Does anyone experience having sleep apnea while awake? Like just doing something random like scrolling on your phone and suddenly you just can’t breath and start gasping for air? And it literally feels like you’re gonna die. It’s so scary and humiliating. Luckily I have never done this in front of anyone but it has really impacted my confidence because I’m scared at any moment it could happen. Itmakes me not want to go out ever. I’ve also had a few instances where I have woken up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Apparently I don’t snore I’ve been told but sometimes I do catch myself breathing pretty loudly while awake. I’m about 315 pounds and 5’11 for reference. This happens once a month maybe sometimes once every 2-3 months. Anyone else have similar symptoms? It really scares me
