DIY project for the ignorant

Hey if this isn't the right place for this, I'm sorry. I'll delete this if you know a sub it would fit better in.

I need help building or purchasing a server for my ultimate goal of having a good archival system for all my things where my boring tasks aren't taking up my gaming pcs memory.

There are a bunch of automated tasks I want to have running. I don't know if this would be too labor intensive to do with one server or not. What server or servers do I need? I'm very new to all this, and am looking for advice.

Here's what I wanna do: -A mincraft server for no more than 20 people. -A Plex server -Ideally it also being an archive for my games and files. I want to set up a RAID system with a shared drive on my network already. Can/should I turn that into a server or no? -As a tool to automate the moving of files between my shared drives. It working to sync up my stuff, as well as organizing it into preset folders with either a script or program. I have a bunch of unsorted data on a couple external hard drives, and want to have a fully organized, synched up cloud life😂 -Also running long download tasks. There's a bunch of archives with public domain books i want to make a library of, but I want to automate it running through and downloading everything without having use up my main pj's resources.

Thank you for reading if you got this far :) This is like my dream project. Any help at all would be so great😂

How do ports on local ip work?

I don't know if I am even asking the right question. A few days ago I made my first home server from an old laptop I had lying around. I successfully added NextCloud Vaultwarden and Nginx proxymanager to reverse proxy everything. But ports 80 443 81 are taken now and what do I have to do if I want more services? Do I have to use specific numbers? Also I used a docker compose file with all three containers in them so if I want to proxy more stuff do I have to use the same compose file? And in that compose file do I have to add more ports as I go along? Do I also have to open these ports in ufw?

Advice on courses/certifications

My employer has decided to go for ubuntu server (on premise). They've asked me the courses and certifications i want to do. Can you tell me the courses(paid/free both) i should start learning it from and the certifications i should prepare for? (they'll pay)

I'll be solely responsible for managing their server. (Fileserver)

I need help picking a server for Active Directory open to suggestions.

I haven't bought a server in roughly 14 years. I'm officially out of touch I need a new rack mount server to run as an Active Directory domain for about 500 users. What do you all suggest? What companies are good what companies are bad? Is there any difference in quality? if someone could help fill me in on the state of things i'd appreciate it.

5x 2 Pin Fan to Motherboard

I am building an AM4-Based Server and have the following Problem: My chassis has 5 fans, and I want to control them, but as the fans get power via Molex, I cannot use the normal 4-pin. The small PCB has 5x 2 Pinouts, and I have no idea how I should connect them to my motherboard. I did not find any suitable splitter. Is it even sufficient to control 5x fans from one on the motherboard? How should I proceed?

Server with gpu?

Hello

I have an application that basically takes screenshots of games (directx11), so ofc a gpu is needed. I could use my personal pc however that's gonna be a pain in the long run. Im wonder if anyone knows where I can rent a server that runs Windows 10 and has a gpu (1050 maybe 1060). Or maybe there's a better way to do this? Any ideas are appreciated.

HP Proliant DL360 Gen11 Clear CMOS/NVRAM manually

I have a brand new HP Proliant DL360 Gen 11. After updating ILO and other firmware, it no longer boots and the health LED just blinks amber. I would like to clear the CMOS/NVRAM manually, but I cannot find any documentation or schematics on the dip switch location. Any suggestions?

Are the GPU and HDD labelled 8-pin power connectors on motherboard identical or does the max power draw differ?

I have an Asrock 4U10G-ICX2/2T system: https://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?model=4U10G-ICX2/2T#

The motherboard has many 8-pin power connections. Some are labelled GPU (e.g. GPU6 in photo below), some are labelled HDD (e.g. HDD3 in photo below). The GPU and HDD labelled power ports appear identical. I wanted to confirm, however, whether they are indeed identical or whether the GPU labelled 8-pin power ports supported higher wattage than the HDD-labelled ports?

I want to install RTX 4090 GPUs, which use up to 450W and require power from 3x of these 8-pin power connectors. I am wondering whether I can use the HDD ports on the motherboard as well, or only the GPU ones? Technically I can plug the same cable into either of the power connectors, but my concern is frying the motherboard if the GPU draws too much power and the HDD power connectors are only designed for a lower power consumption.

I did email Asrock support, but no reply. Any advice?

Newbie* Budget friendly way to build/start my own server/NAS?

Hopefully this is the right place to ask. Just curious on how to start a home server on a budget. Ive seen videos where they use workstations etc. Lets say my price maximum is 200 USD. What would be the best way to go about this? I would love to be able to have server storage capability, asw as being able to do various server activity's. I want to try everything I can.

Thanks!

HPE ProLiant Micro Server Gen10 Plus v2 query

Hey, I was watching this video on YouTube and I have a question after watching it. I am looking to get a PCIe m.2 boot card with 2x m.2 slots to have OS on a RAID 1 however on the video they were talking about the power draw and about how it is better to get a card that doesn't have an inbuilt switch or something (18:10)? Is there any card that anyone here could suggest that would fit my needs but also isn't expensive, please?

PCIe4 x16 2x m.2 low profile card is what I am looking for or close to it

Music Downloader: playlistdl

I was getting sick of ssh-ing into my server to access robust versions of spotdl and yt-dl so I created a web-based user interface that allows me to download any youtube or spotify song, playlist, or album. This is my first time creating a docker container instead of just using one. The interface is very basic but it does show the output when downloading. Multiple files are combined as a .zip folder. It's implemented using docker compose which is my preferred way.

I realize there are some ways to do this on the web already, but they are typically riddled with ads and likely viruses. This is a much more secure way to accomplish the same thing.

Big thanks to spotdl, yt-dl, and of course docker, which provided the heavy lifting to this self hosted service. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

I just bought a rack-mount server and would like some input as to what to put on it as far as software/hardware

Hey all!

I bought a Dell PowerEdge R730XD, and it currently has a 6 core Xeon e5-2620 V3 with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, and I currently have the OS (Windows Server 2022) on 2 x 256 GB SSD's running in RAID 1. I'm wanting to use it for a file server, a minecraft server, media server, photo storage, running VMs, basically everything that I could self-host. Now, here's where the questions start coming in:

  1. I've heard the names of all of these programs such as Plex, Jellyfin, Proxmox, Nextcloud, just to name a few. I've also heard of Docker, but don't really know what these programs do. I know what Plex and Jellyfin do. What other programs could I put on here to really get the most out of my server? And could someone ELI5 what these programs do?

  2. What part of the server should I upgrade first? I'm more focused on parts that I can get cheap, like a CPU upgrade and a RAM increase.

  3. What OS should I deploy on the server? Server 2022 is temporary until I can get an idea of which OS to put on there.

  4. This server has a SAS controller, and from what I read, you can put SAS and SATA drives into a SAS controller, but you cannot match SAS drives with a SATA controller. I know this is true, and my question is: is it better to get a SAS drive to store stuff on it, or a regular SATA drive with an exorbitant amount of storage?

  5. This server has 18 hard disk bays (16x 3.5", 2x 2.5"). How big of a hard drive can I put in there? Ideally, I'd like to have as much storage as possible.

  6. I am coming from an old T110 II that I was inquiring about storage solutions for about a month ago. How easy is the process taking the drives out of the old server and putting them into the new server and still retaining all of my data?

I'm sorry if this seems like it's a bombardment of questions, just a very curious newbie that would like to learn more about the idea of server managing and hosting. Also, please delete if it is not allowed, as I wasn't sure where to post this.

Streaming audio without public IP or port fowarding?

I run a university radio, right now with twitch and that is embedded on our website. I want to make it so we run the audio itself online and not on any kind of streaming platform. The problem is, the computer that is running the dj software is on university grounds and because of that there we can't have a public ip, and we can't change the software location, it has to be running on that local pc.

As I am not an expert on this stuff I asked chatgpt and the solution it gave is having a VPS with IceCast and Soapbox, and having Icecast also on the local computer. I am not sure if this works and I have to be sure to give the university a budget this month. Is there any way for this to be done?

HPE DL380 Gen9 p440ar 2.5" sas drives in front (8 drives 1 cage) +

With what i have can I with the Expansion card for my p440ar controller card use the 3.5" cage in the rear that houses 3 3.5" drives?

I have 5 3.5 4tb sas drives, When i ordered them, they were supposed to be sata to be used in my nas. I was hoping that i could get the 3.5" cage and use 3 of those drives in my server along with the 2.5" drives in the front. I hope this clarifies what my intentions are. all drives are 512 block size aswell.

Is it wise to host my E-Store on my home server?

As the title says, I have a server at my home that is more than powerful enough to host an E-Store. I'm just not sure if this is a good idea due to security concerns. I have worked with servers before but all self taught so there are gaps in my knowledge that I try to fill. Also new to web development. Any insight is appreciated!

Thanks

Fujitsu Rx100S7p refuses to turn on after it refused to shut down completely

I have a Fujitsu Primergy RX100S7p that was pulled out of service because of some RAM issues, and a borked SATA backplane, the company it was owned by could not or did not want to solve these issues, and threw the thing in the dumpster.

I dived it, and since then (2016) it has been my daily driver as a server-turned-workstation.
Slammed a GPU in there, (various actually, but it could not handle newer cards) and with an extra ATX PSU to power the drives and the GPU, it was a beast of a machine. Visual wise and performance wise, despite
it wasn't that much, a Xeon E3 1225v1, 16GB of RAM (12 for the last few months) , for me, it was flying.

Although it got old with 8.5 years of uptime in IRMC, i still used it every day. Until yesterday, when it died on me, after it refused to turn off.. The night before the Primergy already barked at me when i turned it on, by first doing nothing but a high pitched wheening sound, pressed the power buton, the ID button, which caused the error light to go on (instead of the blue light, (that is on the MB lit constantly btw, despite pressing the button or activate it remotely), and IPMI told me that there was no CPU detected at firstt. In irmc i can emulate a power button press, and then it suddenly came to life with all its fans going full speed, as if a 757 was taking off.. it calmed down, and booted up.. later that day, i finished working and Debian did its shutdown sequence, the drives turned off, but the fans kept going.
Power button did nothing, as i held it for 20 seconds or so, so i disconnected it from the mains by pulling the plug.

It crossed my mind.. " i wonder it will power up again"...

Although i am 99% sure that it isnt the PSU that is at fault for not turning on anymore, the 12V rail got a little wonky now and then, and dropped sometimes to 10.4V, and after that it would climb up to 12.1 again, to drop again when there was some load on the CPU and GPU..

So my first thought was that the PSU gave up, which more or less was supported by the IRMC error message: "acpi soft power failure: only standby voltage is detected (power button override) " If i am correct, The standby voltage is 11/12v delivered by the PSU , since it is a ATX12VO PSU, which i have two of..

I got the other one in, same error message, and the same sound of the fan in the PSU coming up, to die down right after, and then the high pitched wheezing sound.. All fans are off, green light on the motherbord is blinking, IPMI/IRMC is accessible for about 2 minutes, after that connection is lost and lights on the lan port go dead as well.

I checked for shorts, none found.
Strangely, all the power options to reset or powercycle it, or emulate a power button push are greyed out in IRMC in all attempts to start it.
I tried both Fujitsu PSU's, with the same outcome as written above.

When it acted weird but still booted (for the last time) the PSU led where blinking green first, and when the server was really on, it was constant green.
The leds of both PSU's kept just blinking green after pulling the plug and tried to boot it again.

I also powered it by hooking up the normal ATX PSU on the 12V rail, the 5vsb wire with DC to DC converter to 11v, and even a 12v yellow wirel on the 11vsb, and the pwr_ok signal to the corresponding pin (went fine, no smoke, nothing exploded, IPMI still working, no errors) and the behaviour is somewhat different. Since i jumpstart the ATX PSU, all fans go 100% at first, including the GPU fan, like if the IRMC reboots, then calms down to normal rpms, but the server is not on, according to IRMC, and the power led stays yellow. pressing power does nothing, hooking the pwr_on from the ATX PSU to the MB also doesn't do anything, and the error message in IRMC is still the same, but it is appearent it clearly is not this issue:

acpi soft power failure: power button override: only standby voltage detected

Edit: although this could just be me being really tired trying to get the machine going again all day..
Since the error message is acpi related.. can acpi actually get a computer in a state where it refuses to turn on? Or does it not want to come out of standby mode induced by acpi? because the last shutdown was like an AT PSU powered computer with the fans still going.. (and probably the CPU not being reset as well? idk) instead of turning off..

I am running out of ideas to be honest... any comment or idea would be really helpful

Dell Poweredge r230 | Memory issues

I bought a stick of memory from these (PC4-17000) people and I cannot figure out why it won't work (I get a no memory found error) This is the 3rd time I've gotten a replacement since the first 2 times the seller deemed it as faulty and now I feel like there is a real underlying issue. It matches the exact specs as the stick I currently have yet still doesn't work even by itself. Any help?

Setting up NFS on Isilon

Hey everyone,

I've setup an NFS export on the Isilon and created a mount point nfsv3 on a Linux server. I have a local Linux user bob who I gave ownership chown -R bob:bob to the directory with 775 permission, however bob gets access denied when he tries to touch a file. I've been reading around that you must have the UID/GUID the same on the client and server (Isilon). Does that mean I need to create a bob user and a bob group on the Isilon with the same UID/GUID (that's on the Linux client) to allow him to write? Please help.

Proliant DL360p Gen 8 Fans running speed up from time to time?

I have a Proliant DL360p Gen8 in my room hosting a few Ark Survival Ascended servers. And lately I have been hearing the fans speed up from time to time for a few seconds. Wasn't doing it for the last 8 months and within the last few weeks it started doing it. I don't know if it's setting I changed but I don't see how they would affect make it do what it's doing. Ark suggest 1 thread so I turned off the threading. Then I set affinitys for each server. I have Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 v2 @ 3.00GHz. 2 10 cores in it. Just cleaned off the CPU/Heatsink and reapplied paste. And after firing it up I heard it about 5 minutes later speed up fans. CPUs at 40C/104F. Fans 1 through 4 say 19% and 5 through 8 say 29%. One of the fans are new in the 5 through 8 area cause on failed.

Earlier when I looked CPU 2 was running 10 degrees hotter than CPU 1. Fans 1 through 4 are the side that CPU 2 is on. Running hot but the fans running slower. Could another fan be starting to fail? It told me the last time when one on failing but nothing yet about a failing fan. Or one of the servers affinitys loading up a CPU and causing a fan spin up from time to time. Intake says 24C/75F.

Oh before I redid the paste. The heatsink on CPU 2 was really warm. But the heatsink on CPU 1 I could barely feel the warmth.

Any advice for me here?

Server for Terabytes of Photography?

My husband's father, who owned a photography business for decades, recently passed. We're now working to digitize all his work - both from scanning as well as downloading off old hard drives. This work is obviously very important to the family and so we're looking for a way to host it in a safe way that ideally, everyone in the family can access. It's A LOT of photography - we don't know the full extent but assuming multiple terabytes. Looking for a cost effective, reliable option for long term (in perpetuity) hosting.

We're completely at a loss of where to start. Any ideas?

Vertical rack server consoles (keyboard, monitor, track pad) any options?

Have a little project that will involve 1 U servers being installed in 4U vertical wall mounts. I need to just have a rack mounted server console (keyboard, monitor, track pad) installed with it. The use of this will be very limited, if at all; but I just can't seem to find a vendor that has a vertical rack server console? Has anyone ever found one?

Dell r520 doesn’t recognize any hard disks

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a Dell R520 server that I hadn’t used for a few months, and now it’s not recognizing any hard disks. All the cables are connected properly, the green lights are on, and there aren’t any error signs. I’ve tried all of the basic stuff, but no matter what I do the server doesn’t recognize the disks. Could anyone help please?

Dell Poweredge T140 - memory upgrade unsupported

So I recently bought this used server (Dell Poweredge T140 - xeon E-2124 - 16GB RAM - Dell H330 that I flashed to HBA/IT mode), planning to start out with TrueNAS

Original RAM (2x 8GB), works fine

My thought was, since I am going to run RAM eating TrueNAS: used RAM is relatively cheap, lets upgrade it.

So I bought 4 of these

And whatever I do, (1stick, 2 sticks or 4 sticks) I keep getting the following error message when I boot the system.

oh boi

Am I stupid and bought incompatible RAM? If i read the spec sheet of the T140 correctly it should support these RAM sticks however.. see page 16 & 17 in the link: https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/Product_Docs/en/poweredge-t140-tech-guide.pdf

So am I doing something wrong or?

Building a custom server cabinet.

Hi guys and gals. I have a curious questions for anyone who’s knowledgable about computer servers and their cabinets. I am a woodworker and have been commissioned to build a custom server cabinet. Since beginning to work on this project I have come to realize that these custom server cabinets might be something I ought to consider making more of. So my question for you guys is, what would you say is a good, general, roundabout number of units that would appeal to most users. In other words if I was to just make a few cabinets and then want to put them up in my Etsy page, is there a number of units that might appeal to more people. Does the average server owner need 20 units, 3 units, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
