Senegal Marathon 2025

Hello.

I'm thinking about to run the Senegal Marathon in Sally next year (or at least the half marathon) but I'm a bit hesitant.

I've never been to Senegal and I don't speak Wolof or French. It would probably be easier to join a group.

Is there a way to find someone who is also running there? Maybe from Europe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

@Mods please delete the post if it doesn’t match the rules .

I am passionate about cooking and use a spoon of oil when I cook for 10-12 portions of food !

Delighted to share recipes …

I make my own spice powders based on the meat , chicken, fish or veggie dishes I cook .

So many butterflies!

Those past few days in Dakar, especially during the afternoons, there have been so many tiny white butterflies fluttering everywhere! I've been in Dakar for a couple of months, and I don't remember seeing them before, so I guess it's a seasonal thing? But it's possible I just didn't pay enough attention before, lol. It's all very pretty and impressive.

How important are greetings in Senegalese culture ?

When I first arrived in Senegal, I was told that formalities, especially greetings, are a big deal in the culture. I made sure to greet people properly using Salam Alaikum whenever I met someone, as I was taught.

However, I’ve noticed that some Senegalese people don’t seem to respond to my greetings. I know the correct response should be Malekum Salam, but sometimes I’m met with silence or disinterest.

At first, I thought it might be because of my accent, so I worked on improving it, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue. I often see others exchanging greetings without a problem.

Is it just me, or do some people not care that much about greetings? Would love to hear your thoughts or advice!

Senegalese in the UK?

Hello all!

I’m (half) senegalese and I’m here on a brief vacation visiting my father’s half (somali). I was wondering if there is also a senegalese community here. Would love to meet anyone while I’m here exploring. :)

Freelancing in Tech as a Year 1 Master’s Student: Is It Viable?

Hi Reddit,

I’m currently a first-year Master’s student specializing in comp. Sci., and as I already have my bachelor's degree (Licence), I’m exploring ways to earn some extra income to support my studies. I’ve been considering freelancing as an option, but I have a few questions:

  1. Is freelancing a viable way to earn money?
  2. What skills or platforms would you recommend for someone starting out in freelancing here?
  3. Are there any specific challenges for freelancers, such as payment methods, local taxes, or market demand?
  4. How can I balance freelancing with my studies effectively?

For context, I have a background in web development and experience with tools like Next.js, Laravel, and Sanity.io. I’m open to any advice, whether it’s about finding clients locally or working on international projects.

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Negotiating the local price without bieng a d-bag?

I'm a student who hitchiked here from Morocco. I normally wildcamp most nights and don't exactly have tons of cash.

Nevertheless a lot of people try to overcharge me - 7500cfa for a 500cfa taxi. Triple the price for that watermelon. At one market I eavesdropped on a seller negotiating with a local. They where offered 15000, and negotiated it down to 9000. Later when I approached for the exact same item they opened at 50000 and absolutely refused to go lower than 25000.

Other tourists have said to insist on paying half the opening price, but in many of the above situations, that doesn't work, it also sucks because often I come across people who are honest, pleased to meet a forigner and offer me the real price. getting into a fight and telling them they are scamming me and to halve their price is a rotten way to repay the teranga and makes me no better than the scammers.

Does anyone have any tips for negotiating/working out the fair price so I don't offend anyone, but equally don't get used as an ATM? (And also don't spend half my time here argueing over money)
