Gear Recommendation

Getting a tactical vest in the mail but the uniform supplied by employer is no longer going to cut it. I need a polo that is uniform but won’t melt if I were involved in a fire. Needs to be short sleeve and have Velcro panels on the shoulders. Definitely needs to be durable and convenient for all weather types. Has to also come in black.

Question

I work at a car auction place. Our gate is broken and won’t close. We don’t really have a reporting supervisor. I’m not comfortable leaving the guard shack for rounds due to not being able to close the gate. But I also don’t want to get in trouble for skipping rounds. What would you do?

How to get a guard card?

Hello everyone,

I just got out of the military and I’m new to all this so bear with me …

Just finished the 30 hour level II security course and got my certification, now how do I get the guard card?

The jobs that I want to apply for with my non-commissioned license require a guard card, how do I obtain this after getting my certification?

I am located in Texas.

Do you guys get a lot of overtime?

Non-security guard here. Just wondering if security guard is a job where people can get a lot OT? I’ve heard from some people it’s like almost unlimited OT. Is that true? Or does it just depend on who you work for? I mean that sounds nice, because then you can make up for the low wages.

Management playing games.

I can't go into specifics, because of fear I'd be recognized. But basically, I am being told I cannot carry equipment because it's only available for management staff, despite me spending nearly 2000$ on it. this equipment is far superior to the issued gear we are given. And then i dig into the issue a little and I hear a lot more. A lot about opinions on me from higher up staff. To make a long story short, I am looking for another job, and my friend who has done security for 20 years is advising I lawyer up.

It’s the little things

Having a rough start to my night, so I’m making a post to talk about my favorite part of my job. It’s the littlest thing but it brings me so much joy after ten years of the opposite- no uniform.

I’m sitting in the room in all black, quarter-zip with a tshirt underneath, jeans, vans, and my hat backwards. An hour ago I walked through the crowded part of the city to get to the office, and no one could tell I do security for a living. I can walk through the city and feel normal.

GSOC-land is a magical place.

Allied Universal / Valley Metro Light Rail contract in Phoenix Arizona

I am a Security Guard who lives in Phoenix Arizona and Allied Universal has a contract with Valley Metro for there Light Rail service where the Guards check peoples passes and keep people from loitering. On the application it says No Hand, Face or Neck tattoos I have a hand tattoo and have noticed several of there Guards with tattoos on those areas so I applied for that post I was quickly turned away because of my tattoo even though I brought it to there attention that several of there Guards having said tattoos but didn't want to listen one of those said tattoos is a large marijuana leaf on the neck which is 100% visible. How do I politely call bullshit on there decision because personally I think it's ridiculous and not right?

Here comes this fat fuck---NOT YOU, OMG!

I was on my post when this cop watcher came up on my phone's notifications, so I said "Oh great, here comes this fat fuck" as a co-worker walks on by. I apologized for the misunderstanding, luckily they didn't hear what I said.

Has this happened to any of you? Also, I'm back. Got fired from the catering job for telling of an LPN.

Inhumane Co-Workers

I don't know where else to vent about this, so I figured I'd post about it here. I have some co-workers in a group chat that talk alot about the mass immigration that trump plans on taking place here shortly. I don't care about politics at the best of times but, what annoys me is how ego driven all of them are. They post things about how all immigrants deserve to be homeless and how most of them are terrorists or felons. Many of them upvote any comments that encourage putting them in shackles or outright just letting them starve. I honestly can't believe the stuff I'm reading. It just seems so incredible to me that people could be so heartless and inhumane.

What's worse, many of these guys talk themselves up as if they are "protectors of peace", the real patriots of our society. When many of them haven't served the military or ever picked up a book. Just a bunch of guys in their 30's and 40's who were privileged enough to be born on the right side of the border, talking about how people that don't look like them deserve to be homeless. Just a bunch of blow hards who keep making themselves out to be some rambo types, when they definitely have the bare minimum training and barely ever been in a scuffle in their lives. It's kind of hard to believe that people would actually talk like this in an open chat with other co-workers.

Anyone else experience things like this? I'm not trying to get political about this truly but, these are human beings we're talking about. They aren't fucking plants; if it ever came to american's being carted off like this. I would hope that people find compassion for us, rather than the way some american's have been speaking. It's just not right, and I can't leave the group chat because I need it for updates. Thoughts?

Do cash-in-transit vans use callsigns?

I was wondering if anyone working a cash-in-transit job could tell me if you guys use callsigns and if so what the callsigns are? Like would it make sense to have the callsign be just cash-in-transit for the van?

Got fired from Allied Universal

Was working there for around a year. I was a sergeant at a College. I swiped a pole in a parking lot with the squad car and they first suspended me. For the past 4 weeks I have heard nothing and today I called and they told me I was terminated.

I guess the subframe was bent. They said that because of the dollar amount and "frustration" caused to the company that they had to let me go. I get I fucked up but they're like a billion dollar company and did not have my back what so ever. Idk man. I secured a job with a major health company in my area that has their own in house security for Hospitals around my city. Went from $17.75 to $22.06 an hour so i guess it worked out.

Edit: Because some people are upset. I am not playing the victim here. I understand i messed up. I am not blaming Allied for firing me, I just thought thought it would be handled though insurance and I wouldn't be fired, Maybe demoted. Either way, I will take the things I learned from Campus Safety and apply them to this new post. Live and Learn!

First day, first post, I think I lucked out?

Hi all! New unarmed security officer and my first post is a modern art museum in a historic district downtown. Second shift hours, no relief to worry about, and no one to relieve. Two check points throughout the whole place, and the employees are as chill as can be.

Was I handed a gift with this post? Worse case is a neighborhood regular that has a thing for our hand sanitizer at the door, minor shop lifters, and shooing the homeless from the front.

Regardless, I’m thanking my luck.

Walked away from 7 years of 911 dispatch looking for something new

I spent the last 7 years in windowless rooms, I'd really love to get into security where I can walk around a large space/interact with people. All the security jobs I find are for the cash trucks which have no interest in.

How can I find the security jobs I'm looking for?

Bonus Scam

So I won’t drop names, but I worked for one large security company for 10 years, and switched to a different large security company last year (direct competitor). I was at an Account Manager level and when the contract changed I was offered a National Accounts position which I jumped at. I’ve been on and off involved with this account since 2015.

In our big QBR meeting (my first one since previously I wasn’t needed on the call) we were told about our bonus payouts and the bonus structure. It’s insanely easy to bonus with this account especially since all my sites run smoothly and are fully staffed (I run 12 UBOT per week between almost 1400 hours). It’s several sites but a lot are a single officer 42.5 hours / week reception posts. The monthly trainings are easy and those affect the bonuses as well.

Well here’s the fun part- while I was reviewing I found the data for the last couple of years too. The bonuses are not new. We’ve always been eligible, even back in 2015. Found out it’s the DM / AM’s discretion what they do with the bonuses, so the previous security company just pocketed the bonuses every quarter.

I paid out every last guard to make sure their bonuses hit this morning and ya know what? Everyone was happy, grateful and morale seems at an all time high. They see this as receiving a small bonus just for doing their jobs and are really appreciative. All the guards received $300 and the supervisors received $500.

Why does everything need to be about greed? I don’t get call offs on the weekends, I don’t have guards acting insubordinate, I don’t have dark hours, and I don’t have issues with guards not doing their jobs. Treat them right and like people (they are not bodies or employee numbers) and they will return the favor.

Can I get a level 3 license in Texas with back child support?

As the text implies, I have a child I pay child support on. due to some health issues I was unable to work for a few months and fell behind on payments. I have been working again the past 7 months and have been making payments plus paying on the amount owed as well, will they deny my license due to this?

Lost Wallet

A lost wallet was dropped off at my site about a week ago. I believe it was from a contractor working here for that week only. The guy doesn't have any contact information in said wallet. Only thing it really has is a veterinary card for a pet. But his ID is in said wallet and he lives in the city i work at.

Should i talk to my boss and try and return the wallet directly? Or should i call the veterinarian clinic and see if they can pass along the message about his wallet being here? I don't think he'll be back anytime soon and i know how much trouble it is losing a wallet. Anyone have any suggestions on what i should do?

OT issues

So this post is for a friend of mine. Basically the issue is my friend just started lost prevention job at a mall less then a month ago, and so far has worked OT about 4 or 5 times already.. so the job requires 2 guards each shift 7 days a week 9:30am-9pm, also there’s only 3 guards plus the supervisor. Plus the supervisor is trying to to get more locations from his bosses in (another state), so far he managed to get another contract for overnight which he uses the same 3 guards plus himself from the mall job for coverage at the new location. I’m no expert in management but i definitely think he should have more staff for the mall job before looking into other locations. I’m telling my friend he should just tell the supervisor he should tell his supervisor he should hire more people for coverage but I don’t know how he should word it so it doesn’t sound like he’s complaining. Advise would be great!!

Edit: will be a month on Nov 15th

WorkWhile

I've been on the WorkWhile app to pick up work now and then. It's typically warehouse work but recently they asked me to upload my guard card and I've been seeing shifts pop up for security on the app. Just wanted to spread the word if anyone is looking for extra shifts.

He's the app for Android:

Is the switch from Safariland to Aliengear worth it ?

Hey! So currently I run a Lvl 3 6360 RDS duty holster as most COMPETENT armed guards are (😂) but anyway, I like it but I’ve been looking at the alien gear rapid force level 3 . If anyone has any experience with both would you say it’s worth switching to?

Need job, but nervous.

I have been trying to get a job outside security for the last month or two. My previous job was not security; it was production work making rubber and plastic parts. I worked security in 2021 but left because I was taking the stress home because of my first post (a mental health urgent care).

My money is running out so I need another job soon. I re-upped my unarmed Guard Card when the time came, so I still have this option, but the idea of going back into security fills me with dread. It's partly the fear of the unknown (Like I do not know for sure what post I will be offered or when I will be asked to do overtime) if someone will be a problem, or getting invited to cover other shifts randomly.

Also, I've heard that certain REALLY BIG COMPANIES, you know who, are viewed on the inside as bad employers.

I was posting, hoping for advice. I live in Riverside, CA, and I would like to get advice on companies, good types of posts, and perhaps reminding me of my rights as a security officer. Can I turn down extra shifts outside my regular post? I am okay with doing twelve hours occasionally, but I would love to go somewhere, do a job, then go home. Any advice before I jump in would be appreciated.

Thank you.

New officer almost cost us our contract

I was working 5 days out the week ( 10 hour shifts ) so i had 1 day of overtime but the company decided to take it away which im fine with but they’ve recently had 4 workers now take over for that day which they all keep quitting and recently the last worker fucked it all up for me 🤦🏽‍♂️

I been here for almost 2 years patrolling a shopping plaza and we haven’t recieved any complaints at all but recently this other officer that came has been doing such a shit job , barely any reports made , he was hiding behind this other building that we don’t patrol and one of the tenants took a photo of it and sent it to the property manager while a homeless man was off going crazy infront of one of the stores

so now some of the tenants think it’s me who was doing all this dumb shit so i had to get my manager to clear shit up with the property manager and explain my new schedule to her which appearantly she wasn’t aware off 🤦🏽‍♂️ 4 fucking complains to the point where they were close to cancelling the contract is insane but i’m just fed up , good thing is at least im working that overtime again to “balance” it out so the property is doing well like before but yeah sick of it

Accepting contracts blind

My boss recently accepted a "going in blind" contract where we did election security without knowing where we would be going, job expectations, post orders, communication resources for questions and reports, etc.

I just wrote a three page contract security due diligence checklist, because I think my leadership really dropped the ball and put our officers at personal risk as well as risk of failure. I don't want them doing that again, and it got me wondering if there are any standards that other security companies have when assessing a contract to determine if they will accept it or not.

My checklist contains items like having points of contact, rules of engagement, a clear of understanding of WHAT we are guarding and how, a clear understanding of any restrictions on weapons/armor/gear, stuff like that.

We went in knowing absolutely nothing. After a few hours on site, I learned that our primary mission was to protect the ballot workers, not watch the boxes. The boxes weren't going anywhere and were pretty hardened even having internal fire suppression systems.

Most of us don't have fire impression gear. We don't have riot gear, we didn't know if we were being assigned because some polling location had been threatened, we knew literally nothing.... but we took the contract and went in blind on an assignment to protect the democratic process nonetheless.

However, maybe I'm being too critical. Maybe this happens all the time. A no name security company nobody has ever heard of before offers a contract. We don't know if it's toxic or risky which is why they don't want to hold it with their own people. Maybe this is actually normal, just a part of running a flex/contractor operation.

Is it common to take assignments from another security company when they don't tell you anything?

If it's not common, and there should be some standards. Then hail Mary, please drop some knowledge on me. I want to know what kind of material should be on my checklist to make sure we don't take bad contracts, and that when we do take one, we'll hit the ground with complete information and full post orders.

If I pass security clearance at a hospital, does the security guard have the right to ask me why I am at hospital?

My bags did not set off any alarm. I have visited other times and other security guards mostly never ask, "why are you here?". Is that overreach? I'm looking for by the book answers not so much opinions. Full disclosure, I regularly see security guards don't ask other people & sometimes ignore their bag setting off alarms.
