quick PSA Auburn between Ellwood and Cary is NOT one way! So when you use the left lane like this you are possibly causing an issue for something wanting to access Auburn from cary or beaumont.
So our furnace had to be shut down because it was leaking carbon monoxide into our house, among other issues. We've got a quote and signed contract to replace it but work won't start until Monday. That leaves all of today probably through Monday night without heat.
We have two space heaters and a fireplace though. We got 3 bundles from Southern States for about $30, and my husband thinks we'll probably burn through it all by tonight. Does anyone know anywhere that sells it cheaper? Or hell, anywhere giving some away right now? Would be incredibly grateful.
My employer owns a local shop specializing in creative/“maker” services; we’re looking to grow in 2025 and would like to work with a fractional CFO to build the roadmap and intermediate goals. I’ve reached out to the Chamber of Commerce as well as the Small Business Development Council plus our industry resources, but no one seems to have any connections.
Thanks!
Almost $100k to open this concept 😭.

Pro-tip: there are many "buy nothing" and neighborhood-specific groups on Facebook and Nextdoor that can be used to give away or find free items near you. You may find more luck on those social networks than here on Reddit and are more likely to deal with actual local users.

... and how is your Christmas shopping going? Get everything yet, or you needing to join the Short Pump masses?
A family member is trying to find a therapist or mental health professional that is well versed in alcohol abuse/addiction. They don’t need an inpatient stay for tapering, just need a good therapist. I looked through previous posts and didn’t find many recent recommendations. If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome! I have looked into my local CSB and there aren’t a lot of resources for this. Navigating the mental health world is difficult sometimes. Thanks.
Feel free to talk about your recent RVA experiences here! Or, brag about the fantastic meals you made at home. Y'all know the drill.
I climb at TRC and looking to meet more people that climb. I’m a member at Triangle Rock Club and belay certified.
How do I go about meeting people who also climb?
Does anyone know of a local store that sells Richmond hoodies? It is the last Christmas gift I am looking for and I don’t have the time to do an online order.
Does anyone have any info on when the roadwork by Stone Brewery will be completed? I originally thought it was to end about now but it has been so long and I know things change
Do any RVA restaurants still give out match books??
I think Shyndigz and Lillian Oyster Hall still do, are there any others?
Any lawyer recommendations? I got served today for an accident I wasn’t involved in and am being sued. The person that the papers should go to have a similar name. Thanks!
Who has the best one in RVA? Any recs? Thanks!
The DJ is from the local legendary salsa band Bio Ritmo.
Hello!
Anyone know of any hat makers (hatters/milliners) in the area?
I recently learned of Ignatius Hats in Petersburg and was saddened to hear that the owner passed and they’re now closed.
Would love to know if anyone is doing something similar. Doesn’t have to be in the RVA area, anywhere in the state is fine.
(Also specifically looking for men’s hats).
Hi all, looking at getting my parents tickets to a show at the Altria and was considering the box seats.
Anyone have any experience sitting there? The “possible obstructed view” has me a bit concerned, but curious of others’ experiences.
I looked at View From My Seats and they didn’t have any from that section.
Thanks!
Do any parents around here recommend a place that hosts classes for expecting parents?
At Mongrel today and saw some Richmond candles. What notes did they forget to include in this one?

Restaurant's Firings Violated Labor Law, NLRB Judge Finds
A Richmond, Virginia, restaurant violated federal labor law by firing eight workers who demanded better working conditions, a National Labor Relations Board judge ruled, saying the eatery must rehire the employees with back pay.
In a 41-page decision issued Tuesday, NLRB Judge Geoffrey Carter held that Mom's Siam, a Thai restaurant in the Carytown neighborhood of Richmond, violated the National Labor Relations Act by firing Madison O'Brien, Sathaporn Khammungkun, Kevin Pang, Gittiyaporn Boonpiem, Rachael Clare Newlin, Margaret Lee Corum, Tempest Britt and Gabriella Zenaida O'Briant on July 6, 2023.
However, the evidence was insufficient to find that Mom's Siam illegally fired John Henry Kay, Judge Carter ruled, saying Kay's circumstances were different from the co-workers'.
Mom's Siam employees began organizing around issues in their workplace in late 2022, forming a group chat to discuss their problems with wages, tip-sharing calculations and shift assignments, according to the decision. By March 2023, they were meeting regularly to discuss these concerns.
In May 2023, they presented a demand letter to the restaurant's manager, addressed to owner Sukanya Palaart, demanding better wages, equal distribution of shifts and a 50-cent yearly hourly raise. Palaart had a family commitment that prevented her from attending the meeting, and efforts to reach her directly that month failed, according to the case record.
In the meantime, the workers created an Instagram page and online petition to support their efforts for better working conditions, according to the record.
In June 2023, Palaart agreed to meet with the workers. She didn't respond well to the workers' concerns, repeatedly telling them to find another job if they didn't like working at Mom's, and saying the restaurant was overstaffed and she wanted to cut the staff from 25 to 12, according to the decision.
The workers decided to hold a rally to support their demands in response to the owner's "disrespectful" reception of their concerns, as they put it in a news release. The rally was held June 25, 2023, with seven workers participating. Mom's closed early that day and remained closed until early July, according to the record.
The owner attributed the initial closure to an internet outage and the subsequent closure to renovations. On the workers' Instagram page, they called the closure "an obvious retaliation response to our organizing efforts." Workers were not paid during the closure.
On July 2, 2023, Kay received a call from Palaart while at a gathering with co-workers. They put the call on speaker, and Boonpiem recorded it. Kay asked Palaart if the workers who attended the rally would be called back to work, and the owner said no, according to the transcript of the call included in the case record. Palaart indicated that it was because she felt she'd been disrespected at the rally.
On July 5, 2023, before the restaurant officially reopened, Kay was called in to work, but had to leave their shift early due to an emergency. The seven workers who attended the rally were not called back, nor was O'Briant, who had signed the letter, according to the record. Kay was also not called back after July 5, the record showed. Kay, O'Briant and the seven workers who had attended the rally each filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB, saying they'd been unlawfully fired.
Judge Carter agreed with the rally attendees' and O'Briant's assessment of their situation, rejecting Mom's argument that the workers weren't called back because they "did not make an effort" to get scheduled when the restaurant reopened.
"The evidentiary record does not support this defense," Judge Carter said.
Though Kay signed the letter and ultimately did not come back to work at Mom's, Judge Carter found they were differently situated from their co-workers in that they were called back to work July 5. Their departure from Mom's was therefore not unlawful, Judge Carter ruled.
The workers and a representative of the restaurant did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.
The NLRB declined to comment.

Looking for a theater with reclining seats for Christmas Day. Recently had an injury that is keeping me from traveling and requires my leg to be immobilized/straight for the time being… but I want to see Nosferatu!
Does anyone know any accountants that can help with SSDI and taxes?
Hi everyone! I moved to RVA in May of this year from Charlottesville. Currently I'm still commuting into Charlottesville every day for my job with the Federal Government. Recently apart from the awful commute, the job has gotten a lot worse in a variety of ways, from management to dysfunction to work-life balance (I was made to pull an 80 hour work week while suffering from walking Pneumonia, for example), to the incoming Trump administration proving a major danger to federal workers and especially my department, so I started putting into things locally.
I was offered a position in an administrative role at the VCU Massey Cancer Center. On its face it seems great-- I'll get more pay, a hybrid work schedule, and I can see the building from my house. But I don't want to step from one bad situation into another, so is this a job worth taking? Are there any major red flags I should know of to keep in mind?
Thanks all!
hey so i moved here recently and dont really have anyone i grew up with out here, what is some good things i can do or go to for seeing christmas stuff or christmas activities, not necessarily the day of. thanks!
Anyone know a local place that sells t shirts that say “Richmond” or “Richmond, Virginia” on them? Thanks
Anyone have experience with this office and wait times? I have an appointment for a couple of weeks from now for a name change but am wondering if I just show up what the wait looks like typically? I’ve never been to a SSA office so have no frame of reference.
My family is looking for an in-home caretaker for my elderly uncle. He is autistic and non-verbal and unable to do many daily tasks himself. This person would assist him with bathing, cooking/heating meals, feeding, using the bathroom, light cleaning of the area he uses (kitchen and bathroom), washing clothes, tidying his bedroom, etc. Are there any reputable websites or resources we can used to find a caretaker? They would be getting paid $13.61/hr through our insurance company so we wouldn't be interested in working directly with an agency. Work hours would ideally be 5pm - 9pm on weekdays and 10am until 6pm on weekends. Also, what are some easy and affordable options for background checks?
