Up Above My Head: A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe | March 20 at the Hippodrome

https://preview.redd.it/rui3d0aumfge1.png?width=1873&format=png&auto=webp&s=891a4021adf434c6dc41c4ea72777e53fc8a8164

She’s the mother of rock & roll. Everyone from Chuck Berry to Elvis to Jimi Hendrix copied her style. Her fame was international. Richmond, Virginia was her home. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an icon. She lived in Richmond at the peak of her fame, and was a resident for nearly a decade. Now, we’re honoring her legacy in a new way!

Led by musicians and artists from across the Richmond area, a new celebration of Sister Rosetta Tharpe‘s history in Richmond is underway. Whether declaring a city holiday, developing historic markers, uplifting her name in road signs or scholarships, this is a movement to shine a brighter light on her legacy.

To begin, we’ll host a concert at the Hippodrome to celebrate her birthday: Up Above My Head: A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. This will be a tribute show and a history lesson; a way to see your favorite Richmond musicians and a way to honor the legacy of the Black woman who paved the way for rock & roll. With help from our community, we not only can fund a spectacular event in her honor, but we can also begin the momentum to lift up Sister Rosetta Tharpe in a bigger way than the city has ever done before. An honor she so rightly deserves.

As part of the fundraising effort, we will be auctioning off an electric guitar featuring an original painting by Noah Scalin to honor Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

Cost: $25, plus $3.52 processing fee through EventBrite

Location: The Hippodrome, 528 N 2nd St Richmond, VA 23219

QUINTON JONES on Shockoe Sessions Live! #jazzmusic | Feb. 18th

A weekly concert showcasing Virginia’s GOLDMINE of music talent! In person and live streamed, presented by Shockoe Records and In Your Ear Studios.

Quinton Jones, a powerhouse recording artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, believes “music is a means of expressing oneself, with the only limitations being what you set”, and prides himself on evading definitive genre labels.Jones is a strong advocate for the success of his friends, family, and supporters, and often avails himself to assist with the successful execution of their endeavors. He has had the opportunity to render musical accompaniment for legendary musicians in the RVA community and beyond, such as Mr. Hannon Lane, Mr. James “Saxsmo” Gates, Dr. Weldon Hill, and Mr. Rodney “The Soul Singer” Stith, just to name a few. With this breadth of musical expertise and camaraderie, it’s no wonder Jones has a knack for assembling groups of like-minded individuals for natural, exalted experiences in fellowship, with music as the vehicle for doing so. Jones has taken the friends he’s gathered to perform on his own sets at the 2nd Street Festival, The Roots Jam, Rodney the Soul Singer’s The BluePrint EP Release , and In Your Ear Studio’s Shockoe Sessions.

Low Water Bridge Band on Shockoe Sessions Live! | Jan. 14th

A weekly concert showcasing Virginia’s GOLDMINE of music talent! In person and live streamed, presented by Shockoe Records and In Your Ear Studios.

There’s a sound the Shenandoah River makes as it rumbles over old stones in the shallows. It sings songs the way they used to be – plain and honest. No frills, buckle that belt before you head to the hills and hollers. It’s there under a Virginia moon that you’ll find the Low Water Bridge Band.Forged by firelight picking, the band’s romping, stomping, country-grass Americana ain’t for the faint of heart. Since their founding in 2020, they’ve gone from barnstorming the Shenandoah Valley to festival stages along the East Coast. Venues from the Carolinas to Kentucky and, yes, Nashville, Tennessee ring with their sound and are asking for more. They’re led by guitarist and lead singer Logan Moore’s searing melodies. The precision thump of brothers Alex and Riley Kerns’ bass and drums and their pitch-perfect vocal harmonies fill out the sound. Justin Carver’s pedal steel and banjo swirl through songs like smoke from the campfire. And it’s all brought together with the crunch and crackle of James “Chainsaw” Montgomery’s electric guitar riffs. From the first time you see them, your boots will be worn from kicking up dust. By the time a second chorus comes around you’ll be hooting and hollering their memorable originals alongside their die-hard fans. You’ll join a crowd who travels far and wide, bringing the party to your town. If you’re a fan of good music done right, be sure to keep a lookout for this fast-rising outfit from Clarke County, Virginia. Chances are, they’ll be blowing through your way one of these days soon.
