r/Rosacea is a patient support community for those diagnosed with Rosacea, a medical disorder of the facial skin and sometimes the eyes. Diagnosing rosacea takes a pro; if you think you might have something like rosacea, see a doctor. Please see our wiki for general info about rosacea if you're trying to decide if you need professional advice.

Please read the wiki before posting.

While the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is no cure, medical help is available that can control the signs and symptoms. Any one of the following warning signs is a signal to see a dermatologist or other knowledgeable physician for diagnosis and appropriate treatment before the signs and symptoms become severe:

  • Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead.
  • Small visible blood vessels on the face.
  • Bumps or pimples on the face.
  • Watery or irritated eyes.

Please note: Each patient's case is unique, and treatments that work for one person may not work for another.

THE INTERNET IS BAD AT DIAGNOSING THINGS If you are concerned that you might have rosacea, please visit a dermatologist or your primary care physician for a diagnosis, rather than asking random strangers on the internet. There are many skin conditions and diseases with signs and symptoms similar to rosacea, some of which may be very serious.

Please consult a doctor before taking any medications or treatments, prescription or otherwise.

Several disorders present similarly to rosacea, and often only a qualified dermatologist can tell the difference. Whatever answer you get on the internet will not be sufficient. See a doctor.

Red after Ice Cube

Hello together,

I am relatively newly diagnosed with Rosacea and I am mainly Type 1. That means I regularly get flushes and turn very red. Until now, these flushes always diasappeared after a few hours (maximum). I also have a few pustules here and there, but at the moment they don't bother me so much and I am also medicated with Metrocreme and Monocycline. Today I had a flush again and had the idea, to apply an ice cube to the place on my face, where the flush started. I only applied the ice cube for a few seconds and because I could not really see a difference, I did not apply ice again. After two hours, the flush was fully gone. Only in the place, where I had applied the ice, a red mark was left. At first I thought, the mark might disappear in short time, but after half a day it is still there and also not better. It is also not hot to the touch as my normal flushes. Did anyone here already have a similar experience with using an ice cube? I am kinda scard that i damaged something for good and that it won't go away anymore.

And yeah I know, probably not the best idea to use ice on sensitive skin, I learned my lesson. But I'm happy about every input here.

Tired of sunscreen ngl

I feel like my sunscreen kinda sucks or my skin is just that sensitive. My routine is just water, bioderma Micellar water and moisturizer. But I lowkey wanna cut out the sunscreen.

I'm too paranoid to try new products. And tbh I truely hate wearing it. It just sucks. I'm indoors 90% of the damn day if not more. I don't know why I bother putting so much shit on my skin. I'm always inside or stick to the shade.

Is it that important I wear this shit everyday if I avoid the sun that much? Can't I just wear the correct hat and stay in the shade? What do you guys do?

Will ivermectin still be effective if I use it every 2-3 days, or does it have to be used everyday for it to be effective?

I'm new to using topical ivermectin for rosacea. I used ivermectin for about a week and it ruined my skin barrier but to be fair i think i was also using waaaay too much each application. Is it still effective if i use it every 2-3 days? i've only seen people say they use it everyday

Triple cream greasy?

I’ve been using triple cream via Apostrophe for about a month now and while it’s completely changed the texture of my skin (never has my face felt this smooth!) it’s also getting pretty greasy and shiny.

Will this subside? Maybe I need to switch to lighter products?

My routine: AM Neutrogena ultra gentle cleanser Procure rosacare hydrogel Apostrophe spf

PM Neutrogena ultra gentle cleanser Apostrophe triple cream Cetaphil redness relief cream

Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!!

Licorice root tea on my face?

I noticed licorice root seems to be a common ingredient for calming products. I saw some licorice root tea and I was curious if anyone has tried brewing it and letting it cool then applying to the face? Kind of as a face mask I guess? I couldn’t find anything online but I’m wondering if no one’s tried it for a reason or if I’m onto something??

Are PIE scars easier to develop on rosacea prone skin

I’ve been having PIE scars lately and I’ve been wondering if rosacea has contributed to the fact that it’s harder to fade PIE scars as both have something to do with broken blood vessels in the skin.

How long can you use Finacea 15% for?

Hi, I’ve been using the gel once a day for three months now. Haven’t noticed much difference other than a smoother texture tbh. Redness may have even spread a little, can be hard to tell sometimes.

Should I stick with it? Is it ok to keep using Finacea for more than three months?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Newly diagnosed, but my treatment isn't working. Can any of the veterans give me advice? thx!!!

I'm so sorry if this is commonly asked. I browsed the sub but didn't find the answer to my question. This is what my skin looks like usually. I was prescribed azelaic acid and dapsone, with brimonidine for flare ups. I've been using them for 2 weeks. the brimonidine helps but doesn't last and it's a quick fix, at best. what else can I be doing? am I doomed lol? pardon my sleepy greasy lookin swag rn. thx so much guys

Metronidazole unsealed and opened? UK pharmacy

I picked up my first prescription for metronidazole from my pharmacy today (NHS prescription in the UK). I went to use it for the first time this evening and I noticed the seal on the outer box was broken, and it didn’t have that little foil seal on the tube (the bit you normally break with the spike on the cap).

Is this safe to use? I went ahead and applied it anyway but not sure if that was a bad idea.

Is a pharmacy allowed to sell these medicines in opened condition?

Rozex/Metronidazole Initial Side effects

Hi,

I got prescribed Rozex for my type 1 persistent redness last Friday, I've been using in on my nose once a day as directed by my doctor but I've noticed my nose has been getting redder. It is listed as one of the common side effects and wanted to see if anyone has had luck with these going away when continuing to use the treatment or not. I'm also using Aveeno calm+restore moisturising oat gel and cerave hydrating cleanser which I haven't caused issues previously but also didn't help things particularly improve.

Doxy

Hi all. I was prescribed doxycycline 100mg twice a day, I’ve been on it two months and I just can’t anymore. I have a follow up but not for a week and I’m thinking about reducing to 100mg daily and then at my appointment convincing the doc to reduce it to 40mg. I say this to ask, has anyone reduced from such a high dose to just once a day, or even to a smaller dose, and had a good experience? Or what even was your experience?

Mast cell activation or high histamine levels

Has anyone experimented with a low histamine diet and had results? Or had a diagnosis of MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome)? Just doing my own research and seeing a parallel to rosacea symptoms (red skin, flushing, frequent rashes, hot face)

Ocular rosacea

Has anyone had ocular rosacea linked to hormones and gut health? To start, I took accutane 12 years ago.

I have not had a history of dry eye issues per se. Thinking back, I did start getting styes a few years ago, and I had a mean eyelid twitch last year. I thought it was just stress. No pain or dryness.

Fast forward to end of September, I used an eye wash for a week that had BAK (nasty preservative that’s toxic to the cells in the eyes) In it, dried my eyes out and caused them to sting and hurt a ton. I went to the eye doctor and was educated on what BAK is and was told I had mild superficial punctuate keratitis. Was prescribed Lotemax steroid ointment, and tons of preservative free tear drops. Optometrist said I had some glands that showed some thick miebum (never had that before) that could be at result of the swelling reaction, but after two weeks of Lotemax and compresses she said the oil was clear again and the SPK healed.

A specialist looked at me more in depth, and said he sees signs of long term inflammation, and scaring on some orifices, and veins (Telangiectasia )on my lower lid margins. A meibography shows lots of gland atrophy, approx 50%. He diagnosed me with ocular rosacea, that he said could have been subclinical inflammation that’s been killing my glands for years without me noticing, and this BAK/conjunctivis incident caused it to flair.

45 days after the original incident with BAK my aqueous tear production is close to back the way it was, and my oil glands are producing oil (I can see them when I blink in a 10x mirror), yet my lids still burn off and on and my eyes dry out by 10:30pm.

My testosterone has been tested and is low (below 300). Thinking the Marine Corps did it to me through constant stress and exposure to chemicals and diesel exhaust fumes right next to my face for the last 10 years.

My wife also has H. Pylori and is going through a protocol to rid herself of it, and that means I’ve probably got it too.

Now that you’ve read my narrative, on to questions:

Does anyone have MGD with clear oils that flow?

Has anyone had any relief through TRT therapy?

Has anyone seen improvements from a healthier gut if they had SIBO or H. pylori?

Demodex has been shown to be very common in people with ocular rosacea, yet no eye doctor has mentioned they’ve seen anything. Has anyone tried the ivermectin protocol?

I’m currently looking into IPL and LLLT to try and kill the excess veins and may take 40mg doxy for systemic inflammation.

Thanks all

Sunscreens (Colorscience, Summer Fridays, Prequel)

Hi everyone! I'm debating trying color science mineral spf...but it's a little pricey. Wondering if anyone swears by this / thinks it is worth it?

26 and first rosacea flare up / treatment was early this year. I have tried numerous sunscreens (as I'm sure many of us have) my favorite is the Sunmer Friday milk shade but my skin doesn't LOVE it. My skin seems to really enjoy the Prequel mineral sunscreen however it's very light/peach undertones and since I don't wear make up I'd prefer more olive / tan.

Anyway, has anyone tried Colorscience? Or please feel free to share any sunscreens with high content of ZincOxide that worked for you!

(I have type 1 with occasional pustules but am on Ivermectin topical. Typically very dry skin)
