Does learning Romanian make learning Slavic languages at a later point any easier than other Romance languages?

Hi! I'm a native Portuguese speaker. I've also learnt Spanish (C1) and Italian (B2) to a decent level. Recently, I was looking into studying Romanian and I noticed that both the spoken and written form of the language were quite different from western romance (even more so than French from PT/ES/IT) and that Slavic influence has played a role.

I'm living in Italy and I notice Romanians have it very easy understanding western romance speakers but not the other way around (a similar asymmetric intelligibility happens between European Portuguese and Spanish/Italian as far as the spoken language goes).

But do Romanian speakers and learners also have it easier understanding or at least getting started with Slavic languages? Perhaps due to shared vocabulary, phonology, etc...? And, if so, which ones? South/Central/East Slavic?

Did Romanian linguists ever consider only using "â" as a solution?

I've read the whole history of "â" and "î" and their defunct brothers:

û (sûnt), ê (vênt), ô (fôntana), and also situations where [î] comes from a "zero" "îmi", from latin "m(ih)i" or from Russian ы.

Only using "î" had the "Romînia" inconvenience, at least for some.

Was there ever a consideration to only write using "â"? ânger, âmi, cânt, etc.

Would it be a bad idea? Would it be bad? And if so, why?

Why Lev and not Leon Tolstoi?

Russian Лев transliterates to Lev in Romanian, however, it means "lion", English name Leon. Romanians also has the name Leon as well, as I saw. It seems this was the case in old news papers from 1924:

So, why did it changed to Lev when it the past it was Leon?

Romanian has Masculine and Feminine versions for they, and I was wondering, If I were to say, (In reference to other people) would I use 'Ei'or 'Ele'? E.G how would you say:

Why "î" for slav names?

Why is "î" used for transliterating slav names like: Soljenițîn, Elțîn, etc.; instead of keeping with the rule to use "â" inside the word?

I'd understand if it was a Romanian name already spelled like that like, Sîrbu, although even those mostly with â, actually, Sârbu.

But since these names are foreign, and don't already have a spelling, why not Soljenițân, Elțân?

Why would î be closer to ы?

DuoLingo Family Plan - need 4 people - 50 lei / person / year

Hi. I'm looking for 4 people to form a family group of 6 on DuoLingo.

The cost per person is 50 lei/year if we are 6. The subscription cost is 300 lei/year.

If you're interested, I'll make the purchase, add you, and then you can send me the payment via Revolut or whichever method is more convenient for you. First, I'll wait a bit to see if we gather enough people.

If there are more interested people, it will be first come, first served. Thanks!

When to use genitiv and when "de"?

Hi everyone Coming from a language, which does have a concept of genitive, but doesn't have something similar to "de", I find it confusing when to use genitiv, and when - "de". When for example, it's ușa de bloc and when ușa blocului? Can we say "suc mărului" or only suc de mere? "Casa fratelui" or "casa de frate"?

Sorry if the question is confusing, I hope you get the point 😅

Why "che" is pronounced "ke", whilst "ce" is pronounced "ch"+e? Same with "gh"

As the question sais. I feel like they should be vice-versa. The romanian language has exceptions / rules that divert from the main rule of read as it's writen and vice-versa. But this is exactly the opposite.

why would you need "ch" for a phonetic "k" as in: "chitara" could be "kitara" or simply "citara".

as well why would you pronounce "ceas" with a "ch" that does not exist in the alphabet. why "corect" is not prononounced as "chorect" and "carte" as "charte".

if you look at the below explaining for english speakers you'd get what I said

  • ce : sounds like „che” in chest
  • ci : sounds like „chee” in cheek
  • che : sounds like „ke” in keg
  • chi : sounds like „kee” in keen

Disclaimer: I'm romanian, though this bothered me for many years.

How are â and î distinguished in spelling out loud?

When I want to spell something to someone verbally, say română, do I just say â and hope they get it by context? Or I have seen â din a and î din i, is that a thing people actually say? Bonus question, to say the letter H, do I say haș, he, or either?

Edit: a little overwhelmed by all the responses! Thank you so much everyone for the info and discussion!

Simple Romanian sentences

Where can I find a list of simple Romanian sentences with an English translation for practicing grammar? In lists like this there're useful sentences however the grammar used in them is definitely not basic. I'm looking for sentences that will use limited vocabulary (say 1000 words), and will start grammar wise say with the simple present tense, 40 verbs, articles and 5 prepositions. Like "the book is on the table" or "I'm going to the cinema" rather than common phrases and idioms.

Edit: in every grammar book there're some examples. I'm looking for a long list of sentences and translations, side by side.

Simple literature books for people who already understand basic romanian

Hi ! My parents are romanian so I understand most of it (within their vocabulary range haha) but I can't speak it. I would like to read books in romanian to improve myself.

I tried the technique of reading a book I already read in my native tongue but most of them are pretty complicated. I am looking for books from romanian authors.

Do you guys have any recs for entertaining books with mostly basic romanian vocabulary ?

Thank you in advance !

I want to start learning Romanian but don't know where to start

Buna!

I've had an interest in learning Romanian for a while now but never actually put in the effort to start learning it, until now. I think it's a really cool language and really cool culture so I want to start learning it.

For reference, my native language is Portuguese and am native level fluent in English too. I'm also at an intermediate level in French, but I already have resources for French. I have no idea where to start for Romanian, so I need your help.

Which youtube channels, apps, websites, books, or resources are best for me to start? I never had to start learning a language completely from scratch like this so I don't know where to find anything. Thanks in advance!

When do I use buna dimineața, buna ziua, buna seara

I was under the impression that it is

Buna dimineața: untill 11:00 Buna ziua: 11:00 - 18:00 Buna seara: after 18:00

But today, someone said buna ziua to me at 8:30 in the morning.

I tell him, dude, what the hell, it 8:30 in the morning, you should be saying buna dimineața. And he tells me no, I woke at 5 in the morning, so it's ziua for me.

I don't believe it works like that, (I think it's stupid if it does work like that tbh) but I'm asking for any takes on this.

Question about the use of noi and ne

Hello! I'm learning Romanian to attend better at the Divine Liturgy, but reading the liturgical text I noticed that in the phrase "miluiește ne pe noi" it's used both noi and ne forms. I'm native Spanish speaker, so I don't know if the "ne" form part of the verb or why does the first person plural pronoun appear two times, it wouldn't be translated literally as "Have us mercy on us"?

Thank you in advance for the answers and excuse my English.

Manual de limba română

Buna ziuă! Caut un manual de limbă română, dar nu vreau o carte "survival phrase book" sau o carte mai ușoară. O carte ca ai găsi in școală. Mai învăț dar înțeleg fundamentale, Nu trebuie să învăț despre genul gramatical, etc.

I also dont have the biggest vocabulary so ill be switching to english from here.

I want a textbook (preferably physical) with exercises and grammar on sentence structure. Something like you would find in a classroom for teaching.

Im willing to pay some money but i just cant find a good book and where to buy it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
