Orchestra or big bands open to non-students

Sup janners, does anyone know of any orchestras or big bands in Plymouth that are open to non-students? I know the uni has groups but I can’t find anything about whether I could join as a non-student.

I haven’t picked up my instrument for about a decade but I got to grade 5 before stopping so I hope my muscle memory is decent haha

How to make friends in Plymouth?

Hi everyone!

I (40M) moved to Plymouth a couple of months ago to start an assistant professor role at the uni. It's been a distressingly lonesome experience thus far, socially and intellectually. I didn't know anyone prior to coming here and things haven't improved since. This hermit lifestyle, which I've already had to put up with through many years of expat work across Europe, is now taking a serious toll on my psyche, and therapy or the occasional WhatsApp catch-up with my few far-flung friends aren't cutting it.

I've always used the band-aid of dating apps in the past to assuage this gnawing sense of isolation, but this is currently not an option, since I am in a (struggling) long-distance relationship. Hence the question: how does one make friends around here? Is there any good friend-making app that people use or something to the same effect? I tried to log in the Discord server, but I'm completely naive about the platform and don't seem able to see any relevant posts about it.

Any tips and pointers are much appreciated!

Edit: following a user's sensible advice of adding a few more info about myself. See below.

  • I'm a cognitive scientist interested in social cognition (worked with preverbal infants, adults, primates). Currently AP in Psychology at the University of Plymouth.
  • Originally from Italy, but I've lived in several places (Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna) before coming here.
  • I speak English and Italian but vastly prefer the former.
  • Into nonfiction books (anything in evolutionary sciences is my jam), songwriting (played guitar and sang in a few avantdeath metal bands back in the days; ideally, would love to meet musicians looking for a singer), disquieting movies (A24 style), and gaming (big action-RPG and metroidvania fanboy).
  • Besides the occasional gym, reading, and gaming, I don't have any hobbies. Love nature, but I never marshalled enough resolve to plan trips on my own.
  • I have the alcohol tolerance of a small Asian boy, so not much a drinker. Hardly ever been in a pub. Non-smoker.

What to do for an evening alone in Plymouth?

I've got to drop my wife off at a drinks thing in Plymouth on Friday and then kill about 3-4 hours before picking her up. I can't have a drink coz I'll be driving and I really hate eating in restaurants on my own. There doesn't look to be much on at the cinema or theatre. I'm guessing the shops are shut and the weather looks to be a bit grim too. I can't come home coz we live 90 minutes from the city so I'd just spend the entire evening driving. Any suggestions would be really welcome...I'd really like to find a coffee shop that's open late or a cool event but I just don't know where to look. Maybe I should volunteer somewhere? Can anyone suggest something?

What’s the point in tapping off?

I get the bus to work every day (Stoke -> Ernesettle). I use the ‘tap-on/tap off’ method to pay. When I tap off, I get charged £2. When I forget to tap off, I also get charged £2. So my question is, what’s the point of tapping off? Would it mean a smaller fare for a shorter journey? Or is it one big Plymouth City Bus joke?

Somewhere to work near Plymouth life centre?

Hey, I’m down in Plymouth for a week and looking for somewhere I can work from during the day near the Plymouth life centre. Anyone got any good suggestions? At the moment I’m off to Plymouth central library. Ideally I need somewhere to sit with a laptop with wifi.

Any ideas?

I'm so sick of being bored indoors. I need to start being bored out or better yet being not bored out. Somewhere I can make a habit of it, maybe make some friends, learn something. I will say I'm boring and am poor af. I've lived here my whole life but I haven't a clue tbh beyond the obvious museum, cinema, ect.

Small businesses to buy Christmas presents?

Small businesses to buy Christmas presents? Are there any shops (online and around Plymouth) that sell products that are unique, hand crafted or just not from a big company? I used to use Etsy, but it's full of the same pictures and items that are clearly scams. I love going to Charity shops, but I'd love to be able to support some small (and local if possible) companies instead. Or if there are good Christmas Markets coming up?

FREE Videography For Small Business in Plymouth!

If you run a small business in Plymouth and want some material to promote yourself, for use on websites & social media, then I've got an offer for you.

I run a videography production company that started this year, and have been almost exclusively involved in corporate video so far.

My goal is to expand my portfolio, and what better way to do that than work to promote other local businesses.

Here's my offer:

- Up to 1 hour at your business to work on a a short 30-60 second video for your use.

- Full access to my equipment and pre-production services to help you get the most out of the experience.

- You will get the full video and all associated images for use on web and social media.

- As a return, I will use the video on my own website as part of my portfolio.

That's it. A simple quid pro quo exchange.

Usually, videography services for small businesses are always just an added expense that can never quite be justified - yet business websites with professional video on their homepage drive engagement better than any other form of web content.
Video that concisely communicates to your customers in a humanising way what you do.

What's the creepiest thing you ever saw in Plymouth?

I didn't see anything strange aside from a very strange clothed man a long time ago. Then saw a very dodgy looking guy as if he was up to something

Have you ever experienced anything strange in Plymouth?

Best GP in Plymouth?

Hi all,

Recently new to the city and found myself needing something looked at at a GP. Though despite reading through NHS website reviews and similar google reviews I am struggling to find a generally well rated GP. Has anyone got any recommendations of GP's they currently are registered with and think are good choices?

Thanks

Is it ok to have a massage with all clothes on?

Is it ok to have a massage with clothes on? I want to go to Natural health massage place soon, unfortunately some people argue that it might now be 100% clean. As a test, would they accept if I had clothes on? By this I mean my T-shirt and trousers, on?

That place is very convenient for me and would like to try. Would they allow me to with T-shirt and trousers on for a short massage? If not, does any place allow it?
