A group called Pro-Animal Future is in the middle of its pilot campaign in Denver to pass a citizen-initiated ballot measure to ban slaughterhouses in the city. It is the first step in their long-term plan to target environmentally destructive factory farming, using the political system.
The organization conductedĀ researchĀ that showed that many people who are unwilling to change their diets would nonetheless vote for policies that advance more planet-friendly food systems. By targeting inflection points in the industrial agriculture system, strategic bans can cripple the industry.
I'm excited about this campaign because it bypasses the often frustrating "change people one by one" approach and could make a really meaningful difference in the coming years. This first campaign, for example, would shut down the largest lamb slaughterhouse in the country, one of the most carbon-intensive foods.
The opposition has raised about $1 million to fight against the ballot measure so Pro-Animal Future is in the midst of an important fundraiser to pay for advertising, canvassing, etc. If you have the ability, please support this effort! Although it is a local campaign, the momentum achieved from a win would help support future campaigns with broader reach and hopefully play a big role in dismantling the animal agriculture system.
