Chronic pain

Hey, I am prescribed Tramadol short acting (50mg) and long acting (100mg)

Long is taken twice per day and short is taken 2 at a time as needed along with other non opioid meds.

I have run out of short acting, if I crush the long acting will it becomes short acting? Since I take 2 50mg at a time it should be the same right?

The instructions say not to chew or crush because it could "give you too much at once" but, that's kinda what I want? (Not too much, but I want that amount at once since that's my normal dose)

I can't deal with this pain, even with the tramadol it's bad, but without it's unbearable

Does ibuprofen help with emotional pain too

I went a little over the recommended dose (on accident) and now my feelings aren't hurt. Is that a coincidence? It even took the amount of time it takes to relieve the physical pain (the reason I'm taking it). Any science to back that?

Oxycodone 5mg

I've been taking Oxycodone 5mg for a few months now due to extreme pain in my lower back, and my husband wants me to fully get off the pills, in which I understand since he's a previous user of other drugs (smoking) and has had friends who's taken Oxy and then totally broken. I want to quit but then I don't, I rarely take it to just get the kick, but it has occured. I also don't know if I can eat them for ever so long even if it's a low dosage. I know I'm just fooling myself when I say I'm not addicted, since my husband has noticed that when I don't have the pill, I'm totally fine, even if I just hold the jar. Idk what to do really, they are the only pain medication that works for me because of multiple surgeries

Third year medical student - What resources/reading materials can I use to learn more about Pain medicine? Suggestions for pain topics to review with my Attending?

Hi, I am a third year medical student who is about to start a rotation where I will be on a Pain rotation. As as result, I am looking for some good intro-level reading materials for Pain. I found a copy of pain management secrets online so I plan to use that. My attending wants me to make a list of topics and questions to go over with him. So far, I got EMGs, Spasticity Pain Management and agents, (botox, baclofen), Pharmacological management, Interventional spinal therapeutics, Injections and Rheumatological Disorders, and MSK U/S. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for any other particular topics you feel that it critical for medical students to know about pain or sometimes is hard to understand. Thanks!

20th ASIPP conference in Orlando

Anybody going to the ASIPP conference in Orlando? I'd be interested in meeting up with other interventional pain redditors. I actually just finished my fellowship last July and would gladly take any advice from seasoned practitioners.

Help discussing pain with doc

Hey there,

Not sure if this is the right sub so feel free to direct me somewhere else.

A year ago I was in a fairly bad car accident which crushed and broke my right foot. I've had 3 surgeries since. Immediately after surgery I was on hydrocodone for about two months and self weaned onto basic pain meds such as Tylenol 500mg. Recently I have found that the Tylenol isn't helping for longer than an hour or so and I'm concerned with the amount I have to take ( roughly 8 pills on an average day)

I'm considering contacting the foot surgeon to ask for other pain management ideas but feel like I don't know enough to make a good choice with what he suggests. Pain meds don't negatively effect me, however I don't want to find myself reliant on a prescription.

Any guidance you can give would be appreciated, even just knowing some of the names of drugs he would mention would let me google a bit beforehand.

Looking for Pain Management Professionals to answer a couple job related questions...

Hi, I'm looking for pain management professionals to expound on a couple work related questions... (yes, I am writing a book)

Has the latest round of publicity regarding opiate abuse increased your stress level or that of your staff?
If so, can you approximate roughly how long its been since the increased attention/stress was noticed?
Has it changed how you treat your new patients or affect how you will treat established patients?
And be honest - have you actually read the latest CDC guidelines on opiate prescribing? If so, your impressions?

Thank you, O.Goat

What's a good way to "flush out" pain meds?

I'm on Vicadin and Tramadol for severe pain, and while the Vicadin is nice because it gives me fewer side-effects, my worries about dependency make me avoid it when I can in favor of Tramadol.

Which has some nasty side-effects.

My episodes of pain generally last 4-8 hours, but the Tramadol will remain in my system for... I dunno, 12-36 hours? Dry mouth, fuzzy/detached feeling, etc.

So: what's a good way to get the stuff out of my system once the pain is gone? Should I just be drinking lots of water, or is there anything else I can do?
