What happened at Romantic Kingdom by Newtown?

Drove by today around 2:00 and the parking lot was swarmed with cop cars. There were even a couple cruisers over at the Wendy’s across the street.

Aight Norfolk put me on, what’s the best restaurant downtown to check out as a traveler? 😋

I’m visiting next month, and would really like to try some of y’all’s best food, on a budget if possible too. Any good spots downtown near “The NorVa” venue in the city

Need some help, will pay for time, Colonial Flats apartments.

So this is crazy, but I can't get the new property manager at my new building to give me the slightest help - can someone please go to Colonial Flats and "tour the building" and take pics of the primary entrances and the stairwells? My movers need it to provide an estimate because there's no elevator or loading dock and it will be extra to do the stairs and a "long walk" if that's the case. She says she "doesn't have a map" and can't tell me where any of these things are (or my new unit). She works IN the building! I am gooped that I'll have to otherwise drive 6 hours to get this info. She keeps telling me she's only been in the building for two weeks. I hope she's not sleeping there because she can't identify the exit on a screenshot of the building overhead on a Google Map.

I'll be surprised if she lets me have someone in there to measure the floor to ceiling height and room dimensions but I sure would like those as well so I can sell what won't move before paying to move it.

This has been just bananas. I was so happy and now I'm like "oh noooo" because it doesn't bode well for like, picking up packages or making maintenance requests if THIS is too difficult.

What noteworthy events are happening this halloweekend?

I (27f) am in town for a conference but I want to get out and explore since this is my first time in the Portsmouth/Norfolk area. What is there to do this weekend as a solo traveler that could be fun? Open to food, music, art, and even game and anime related suggestions.

Friendly reminder to enjoy the beautiful places in Norfolk - sunset on the Lafayette River

With so much going on in the world, take a moment to appreciate some of Norfolk’s nature. Nowhere is perfect, but we can all do our bit to make the city better and keep our rivers and parks clean!

20 year old girl facing homelessness need housing asap

Hello, I’m looking for somewhere to stay as soon as possible, I have some money and 2 jobs currently trying to save more, I’ve had to keep using money from my savings to apply for places I keep getting denied to, I’ve looked everywhere Norfolk,Hampton,Chesapeake, and vb, I’m with my girlfriend so we’re doing it together but us both applying isn’t making it better, my credit score isn’t the best it’s somewhere around 400 and I’ve started making payments on my closed account I only owe $300, my girlfriend’s is around 615 way better than mine but we still haven’t had any luck, we have 2 small dogs yorkie and shih tzu they don’t make a lot of noise and nonsense so they wouldn’t be a problem but nowhere really accepts dogs, I put in applications last week at two different places and got denied for both of them, if a higher deposit is what’s wanted I can save every single cent I have but no one seems like they accept that, I haven’t had much help from family or my girlfriends family, they don’t want us staying, well specifically me and I feel like a burden, I didn’t do anything but I suppose it just because I am another human to add to bills but I don’t really do anything while I’m here I try to be not noticeable basically invisible, long story short her mom lets us park in her diveway and we make a place to sleep in the car, I feel like that will soon become a problem so I would like to find a place to call home and get out of everyone’s hair, my budget is $1000 and idc where I live or what the inside looks like I just want to sleep comfortably so I can eat and go to work, soon idk if I’ll have any energy to try anymore it’s really tiring I feel like I’ve looked everywhere,if anyone that’s willing to help wants to know more info please lmk

Thank you for listening and thank you in advance for the help!

Looking for an apartment

Hey all. I'm looking to move to the Newport News/ Hampton area due to work, but it seems like no matter where I've looked. I won't be able to keep my dog because of him being Pit/staffy mix... He's well trained and very well tempered, but I know alot of places discriminate because of those breeds and the people that have given those breeds a bad rap...I refuse to give him up because he's been there for me when nobody else has. If you have nothing positive to say, please keep your comments to yourself. Thank-you.

Apartment hunting

Hi! I am looking to move to Norfolk VA some time next year. I’d love to have an apartment by the waterside or downtown. Here are some I’ve looked at so far:

  • Riverview lofts
  • ICON
  • The Point on 38th
  • Attain Downtown
  • Gravity
  • Fusion

Any reviews, advice, or recommendations help!! I would like a 2 bedroom but my budget for that is $1700.

admirals ticket question

hey! I’m trying to buy tickets to a game for my dad’s birthday, and I was wondering if any of y’all knew if the 4 top table tickets include food or drinks or something? I’d like to get nice seating but i am not sure if it’s worth the price if there are no bonuses, and I know a lot of places include stuff like that for premium seating. Thanks!

Edgar Allan Poe in Norfolk - Happy Halloween

https://preview.redd.it/6yxtg7qpurxd1.png?width=731&format=png&auto=webp&s=19be934c3c9cec2c951007ee81ec24a2520fb4bb

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts.

However, his mother, Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins, usually called Eliza, had been introduced to fellow actor David Poe while performing in Norfolk. He was so infatuated with Eliza he gave up his plans to be a lawyer and joined her acting troupe in 1806.

They traveled the Northeast having a son in 1807, Henry Poe, then Edgar in 1809. By 1810 the family was back in Norfolk, living in Downtown on the now non-existent Brewer Street. The house stood approximately where MacArthur Centers' ice skating rink is setup every winter. It was here that Eliza's third and final child, Rosalie was born. There is some evidence that by then Eliza and David had become estranged and Rosalie's paternity is often questioned.

In 1811, Poe's mother fell ill while performing in Richmond and passed away on December 8. Edgar's father is listed as having passed away just three days later, in Norfolk, on December 11, but no record of his burial has ever been found.

With the death of both parents, the children were split up, Henry went to live with his grandparents, Edgar and Rosalie were placed with foster families. Edgar's new home was with John and Frances Allan, in Richmond, who supplied him with his middle name. He was now officially "Edgar Allan Poe".

Poe passed through Tidewater several more times. When he was six he traveled transatlantic to Liverpool with the Allans, the ship left from Norfolk, and when he was in the Army his artillery unit was stationed at Fort Monroe.

In 1845, Edgar Allan Poe published his poem "The Raven" and became famous. He had published several times previously but this caught the critic's and the public's attention. Poe became a full time author and lecturer.

On Sept. 14, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe gave the last public lecture of his life in the old Norfolk Academy Building at 485 St Pauls Boulevard, which still stands in Downtown Norfolk. A ticket to the lecture was fifty cents and included live readings of many of his works ending with "The Raven".

Mr Poe would give one more private reading in Richmond before being found dead under mysterious circumstances in Baltimore on October 7, 1849.

Why doesn’t the city enforce parking laws?

Like take Virginia Beach Blvd between Monticello and Tidewater, there are signs that say no stoping between like 3pm and 6pm and the same cars are there never being moved. Or during NSU homecoming this past weekend there were roads that had the temporary parking restriction signs or even permanent ones that you could barely fit a car down, God forbid any of those houses had a medical emergency or caught fire cause there was no way in hell you were getting a fire truck or ambulance down them. Hell people were even parked in turn lanes and on the grass medians.
