I’m looking to put together a list of songs Aaron directly references in mwY songs. Does anyone know any?
Some I know:
I Never Said I Was Brave:
Suffer Little Children- The Smiths
You’ve Got Everything Now- The Smiths
So Long Marianne- Leonard Cohen
Four Fires:
Rusholme Ruffians- The Smiths
The Man Comes Around- Johnny Cash
Tie Me Up! Untie Me!:
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me- The Smiths
Got these from Genius so they may not be true but they seem likely
I was looking at mwY’s discography and it hit me that the 7 albums divide up really nicely ( or counting demos/appendix EPs)
It’s all crazy, the most district album in terms of sound because of its toned down folk/acoustic nature is halfway through.
A-B life, Catch For Us The Foxes, Brother Sister
All those have a distinct sound and fit together as a unit. Much more post-hardcore and raw.
Then after it’s all crazy
Ten Stories, Pale Horses, Untitled
They’re back to being heavy, compared to its all crazy. But it’s like the music is being painted with a wider variety of colors. The albums are more mature and fleshed out.
Which one I want to listen to depends on the day, but after looking at it like that I think I’ll always think about their albums in those distinct groups.
If it’s not “Crazy” then it is distinctly before or after that.
I heard Mike Weiss is playing with Geology (Greg Jehanian) tonight in Philly. Anyone going? I’d love to see some pictures/video.
Had a very vivid dream last night of catching the dudes front row at some “secret” venue. Never stood front at their shows I attended and this “dream set” was wild. Anyway - miss the band, duh. Any one have fond front row experiences or otherwise interesting live memories? ☮️
I was reading through the Book of Common Prayer, written by Shane Claiborne, founder of the Simple Way Ministries, of which Aaron once was a member, and this is an excerpt from todays (10/23) entry:
Second-century bishop Melito of Sardis wrote, “Nature trembled and said with astonishment: What new mystery is this? The Judge is judged and remains silent; the Invisible One is seen and does not hide himself; the Incomprehensible One is comprehended and does not resist; the Unmeasurable One is measured and does not struggle; the One beyond suffering suffers and does not avenge himself; the Immortal One dies and does not refuse death. What new mystery is this?”
I don’t think I have see anyone point out the inspiration for the lyrics from A Glass Can Only Spill What It Contains.
This morning my playlist on shuffle, and two songs in a row felt like perfect bookends to my life. the first was all nostalgia and childhood, followed up by the perfect soundtrack to adulthood:
48 by Sunny Day Real Estate >> Silencer by MWY
I saw the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night the other day and this line immediately stuck out to me. "I saw him hold acquaintance with the waves." I had Messes of Men stuck in my head the rest of the night.
I think it's fair to say mwY has been my favorite band for the last 18ish years. Brother, Sister came out when I was 13 and made an indelible mark like nothing else I've ever experienced since. When I got my first computer I had the mp3s, when I got my first car I had all the CDs and switched between them all the time. I did listen to other music as a teenager too of course, a lot of which I still listen to today. Early aughts emo and post-hardcore are also very important and nostalgic for me, but mwY is just on a different tier for me. I've listened to the discography a thousand times and I am still discovering new things in the music. I've had episodes of catatonic depression when listening to mwY was the only way to feel anything. When I have conversations Aaron's lyrics will pop into my all the time. I particularly think of the line "You wear a thin disguise / O light within my brother's eyes" constantly when I feel the warmth of human kindness.
I converted all my ex-partners into fans so they would go to the shows. I bought tickets to the final Philly show, but couldn't make the trip so I watched the livestream with a bowl of green figs while crying my heart out.
I became an atheist as a teenager and left my fundamentalist Christianity behind, but the words never ceased to resonate with me. I remember wishing I could love the god of mwY like they did. I became engaged to a Jewish person and I came to Judaism with great skepticism in my mid-20s, but I think Aaron's words helped soften my heart and truly feel the words of the prayers instead of just reciting them. Aaron's lyrics have a certain Yiddishkeit to them even if he is a Christian.
I am glad that today I can really see the divine joy of HaShem in the world and it has really given me something special.
Referring back to my original question, I think I may have answered it myself, I don't think anything else in life will be like mwY to me, it is just so unique. That said I really want to find deeper ways to connect to other music. Has any artist left a significant spiritual impression on your life?
I’ve never resonated with this line more than I do now at this point in time.
A few years ago I got banned for calling out someone who was anti-vax as also transphobic. Is the FB group still around? Are they still terribly accommodating for terfs and anti-vaxxers?
Anyone know of artists who have done good covers? Would love to check out some bands directly influenced by mwY.
Just finished A-B Life and thought “hell, I’ll listen in progression.” I don’t know if it’s a difference in producers or just an enormous amount of maturity from the band but these two records sound years and years apart. The soul of mwY is still there, it’s still the same personality and character. But Aaron’s lyrics begin to change — quite a lot actually — and the songs feel more structured. And of course, as it is with every album, the drums are Fucking. Phenomenal. I really dig the raw character of A-B Life and it holds a special place in my heart. But listening back now all these years later, I would not have seen CFUTF coming. And I didn’t!! Your thoughts?
“between me and Mike like some cosmic machines .. (something) desperation”

hey yall, this may be doomed search but i was hoping if anyone might know where i would be able to find any merch designed by charlie wagers? specifically the king beetle and fishtower designs. i know that this was a more recent run and is a hard ask but they went out of stock just before i was able to cop one. would any fans— or ex fans—willing to sell/guide me in the right direction happen to know know if any of these are still in circulation? preferably no knockoffs or anything of the sort,
(p.s: anywhere i could find older merch in general is greatly appreciated too! this post in specific is just focusing on this run, also i know that the asbury dunes and sapphire ring designs are still in stock, im hoping to find any merch i cant find in the store)
There is a thread in life only some works of art seem to pull on, the works of Tarkovsky, JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, and many other great artists touch upon that is hard to put into words. It's a shared experience that requires a religious upbringing or psychedelics to fully understand . I wish I was onto the themes and threads sooner.
I was raised Mormon and did a lot of reading because of it, Mormons pull at the same threads as I am speaking and is a hard to understand religion because of it. We are talking esoteric belief, mysticism, and gnosticism.
On the surface Mormonism is very silly, on the other hand it is a deadly serious abrahamic mind game that humanity has been playing with itself for thousands of years.
If you are in tune with these type of "threads" that exist, mewithoutyou is my generations grateful dead, bob marley or TOOL. The message reverberates throughout time.
You don't have to have a 200 IQ or take mushrooms to understand mewithoutyou. I just wanted to open up a discussion for people to share their experience with the band. I have never even seen them live, or listened to them religiously, but I'm realizing as I age the brilliance of their work, and the themes permeating other works of art. I watch the film stalker for the first time which invoked themes of messianism and faith, and it made me think of this band as well as CS Lewis and Tolkien who also use abrahamic iconography in their works. Also I read Rumi and Aesop's fables when I was a teenager and listened to mewithoutyou when I was a teenager, but never made the connection between the two, and connecting these dots later in life has been very cathartic.
On Daniel Davison's instagram story yesterday/today shows Daniel seemingly recording in PA alongside with Mike either recording or producing. This is a purely speculative post, but if Daniel ( who recorded drums with the likes of old Norma Jean, Underoath and Everytime I Die, and generally has one of the raddest drum vibe) and Mike are spewing more musical art into this world, I for one cannot hold still while waiting. Curious if anyone out there has seen/heard more of this collaboration
I've been a mewithoutYou fan for a very long time. Probably like you, I've seen them multiple times live, I have every vinyl AND Collectors Edition vinyl, and I have mwY lyrics tattooed on my body. BUT last night I decided to spend some time with my favorite band and realized I had never really pored over the lyrics. Sure I knew an awful lot of them, but I don't think I ever really sat down and studied them as a separate piece of art.
You will not be surprised to hear this was a truly blissful experience.
I love how the lyric booklet places all sorts of punctuation within the lyrics, often times revealing little side thoughts or Aaron speaking to himself in the middle of writing. I also enjoyed when the songs had an extended musical outro, giving me a chance to dwell on the last lyric and let it soak in.
It's like I told my wife last night, "mewithoutYou kissed the sky, and it kissed back."
