Polyworks to Faro Silver(RS232)

Does anyone have a connection solution to use this older serial devices? I was told it could be done with Promet software which is no longer sold and I haven't found any information on either. It allowed Polyworks to use the manual CMM connection to communicate with the Fato arm.

I've used a tripplite rs232 to usb converter on other software to connect the serial Faro as long as the Usb port was made Com1 and that worked well.

Quality Career Advice

I began my quality control career in CA in 2015 starting at $18/hr . Worked at an aerospace company where I learned GD&T basics and took an online course with SAE. I was there until 2019 and joined an aerospace company starting at $27/hr. Got lots of SAP knowledge as well as inspection knowledge. In 2022, I was promoted to Quality Analyst I/MRB Coordinator making 70K a year. We moved to Nevada and I found an inspector job through a staffing company starting at $20/hr and managed to negotiate $23/hr. The responsibilities are both inspection AND MRB coordination as they do not have an MRB coordinator here. During an introduction meeting, I was asked if I liked working here. After a long pause, I said Yes, but I feel as if the Inspector role is a step back from MRB Coordinator. The Quality Manager mentioned that he does not believe that and encouraged me not to as it is harder to find a "good inspector" in this area. Then went on about how my predecessor had left due to them not receiving a raise when asked. The inspector lead mentioned that the prior inspector quit due to the raise after the probation period being very "small". He mentioned he has seen folks come in and demand a raise and "put their foot down" and it worked.

I am a very humble/soft-spoken person so doing that would be "out of my character". It does not feel right having this much of a pay cut in my opinion and in need of guidance of the appropriate compensation to ask for. The lead here will be retiring soon and there are not other parts of the team. It's a great opportunity to grow to the Quality Lead but I want to be compensated for what I deserve. Any input helps. Thank you.

MPE for calipers with accuracy >0.0001?

Hello nerds.

I'm an engineer that's starting to learn the wonderful world of metrology as my workplace is attempting to become ISO certified. My task right now is to go through the entire shop and calibrate all the calipers to ASME B89.1.14. I have a question about max permissable error.

Our 18" and 24" calipers, which both have an accuracy of +- 0.002", list EMPEs of +-0.002" and SMPEs of +-0.003. The standard's table of MPEs is stepwise based on measured length.

Would I just use the calipers listed MPEs for all length measurements? They seem kind of tight for such long calipers.

Book Title ?

I am trying to find a book about metrology that I heard reference to. It in similar in scope to "Foundations_of_Mechanical_Accuracy" by More but has some association or relationship to Mitutoyo or some other similar type company.

I saw a refernce to it a few days ago. I tried going back through my search history but no luck. And Google searches just keep coming up with "Foundations_of_Mechanical_Accuracy"

CAM2 probing edition feature questions

My work has CAM2 probing edition. It seems to be they're missing out on better ways to use it.

My questions are coming from my experience in Polyworks and CMM manager. Here they are.

Can CAM2 align your data to part but then allow you to manually rotate/shift your data to fit your part as you see fit?

Can CAM2 have baloons pointing to selected data points with deviation that can update as you move your data around manually looking for optimal best fit?

Hole Pattern Datum GD&T Advice

Hi all,
I'm fairly green when it come to GD&T and would appreciate some advice on how best to dimension a hole pattern where one of the hole is a datum. This part (drawing below, dimensions in mm) has already been rough machined but now needs to be sent for jig grinding. There is a mating part with 4 spigots that need to fit in any one of 3 positions (left, middle, right.

Does the hole callout make sense? I am trying give the machinist more margin for error over using standard linear dimensioning.

I would greatly appreciate any insight you may have to offer.

Thanks in advance!

Searching for Steinbichler / Zeiss comet and photogrammetry users. I'm lacking *.ini / *.cam / *.sca / *obp files for my scanner

Hi all, I'm searching for people who use or have used 3D-Scanners from the company Steinbichler or Zeiss, like the Comet 5 / 6 / L3D / L3D 2 and Steinbichler / Zeiss comet photogrammetry kit. I've assembled a scanner from parts and I'm lacking the *.ini calibration files for the sensors measuring volumes. Those are required to initialize the hardware and get a calibration. The Photogrammetry module is lacking a set of *.cam / *.sca / *obp files to get operational. Please get in touch if you use / own a comet scanner or comet photogrammetry kit or know someone who's able to help out :)

Mcosmos v5 cat1000 lag

I’m using a crysta apex with MCOSMOS version 5. I took a program that was running on a bright with Mcosmos version 4. The program takes points on the outer surface and then moves to an inner surface for more points. Both of these surfaces have their own profile callout. We are using best fit. My problem is the program ran fine on version 4. Using the program on version 5 cat1000 lags after a certain point. The CMM will have the surface done but cat1000 lags and half the points are missing and then cat1000 freezes. I have turned off the display for machine position, fixture, ect, thinking that maybe these were the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for a rough estimate for a CMM

I'm not sure if I'm just missing it, but I can't find a price range to save my life. I'm looking for a machine, likely Zeiss or Mitutoyo, with a x of roughly 1200mm and a y of roughly the same. If any of you could be of assistance, I'd appreciate it!

CMM for modelling injection molded part

I’m trying to model a aftermarket car part. I’d like to measure and model as close as I can the mating part. The part is an injection molded part that has a lot of draft angles and profiles on it. Forgive my lack of knowledge on CMM’s but is there a way to just probe the crap out of it and be left with a mesh or map of the parts geometry?

Surface Characteristics of 3D Printed Parts

Hello All, I'm a new engineering faculty member at a small college. We have a few ongoing projects that involve optimizing the surface characteristics of various 3D-printed materials, and I have 3 questions in that vein. I'd love input on any of them if you would care to contribute! The purchases would be primarily for analyze 3D printed samples, but would also be used for general QC on CNC milled components.

I'm considering getting a surface roughness meter to generate RA values for various printer parameters. I'm looking at the Mitutoyo 178-561-12A as the "name-brand" option? Are there other models or brands I should be considering?

Down the road, I'd like to look at using a high-quality 3D scanner to compare more complex printed parts against CAD originals, (and hopefully pick up some surface characteristics in the process) but that's a lot more involved and more expensive. Do you have any thoughts on the validity of this approach now or later?

Should I consider a digital microscope ( Keyence VHX-7000 series, for example) as an intermediary step or instead of the probe-type profilometer?

Thanks in advance!

US-based 2D measurement vendors

Hello all! I'm looking for US-based vendors for precision measuring/reverse engineering a 1.5mm aluminum sheet part with at least +/- .01mm accuracy. I've searched Google as best as I can and have come across all the CMM and laser scanning machine manufacturers, but cannot seem to find people who provide the services of using them.

EDIT: It seems like 10µm accuracy might be overkill, so I'll change my requirements to 50µm.

Does anyone happen to know any good US-based vendors who provide these services? Apologies if this isn't the right Subreddit for the question.

The part I'm needing measured and reverse engineered:

CMM software

I’m a machinist and have worked in NPI engineering and some in quality, but somehow I’ve never had a real chance to work with a CMM.

Is there any free or learning edition CMM software?
Something I can explore on a personal budget, even if the capability is limited? Anything you recommend?

Also, brands or specific CMM software that you recommend?

Strategies for metrology assisted spray painting?

Hi all

Just trying to get ideas for a reseaech robotic project I will work on that aims to achieve the most accurate thickness possible

My initial concept is based on

  1. scannig the part - point cloud/mesh conversion
  2. cad import and robotic path planning
  3. spray
  4. measure thickness: equipment dependent

If I measure thickness I need to add the data to the scan I could scan the part after spraying to be the new part. 4) reprogram the robot- here I am a little bit lost of what I am aiming for.

However, I am overthinking about it without even having paint something.

What is your experience in the topic? Or any idea is appreciated!

I need help with my Anemometer Calibration setup project

So I am working in my university project where i am making a setup to calibrate anemometers.

My part was finding the solution for the motor and regulation, so I wanna know if theres a way to know the rotation speed required to move the air at a maximal speed of 20m/s ?

I know it depends on the blades material and geometry, We have aluminum based blades, I need just a rough estimate.

And if anyone here understands in DC motors what type of motor will be best for this project, considering we need precise speed control and easy speed variation .

How good of a datum are the glass tables on modern optical CMMs?

Can glass tables used on optical CMMs be used as a proper datum simulator just like a surface plate?

Anyone knows what the flatness requirements and parallelism to the machine ways on those currently are?

Zeiss calypso specific dimensions

Is there a way to run a program and only measure specific features? I need to run multiple parts but only measure 2 dimensions from the program. I'm pretty sure I've done this before but I can't remember how. I think it was as simple as crt+ selecting features. I ran a zeiss at my old job but it's been a while. Please help we've had a ton of turn over and I'm the only one with any experience! Is there an easy way to do this without writing a whole new program?

Setting up/Using Faro Arm

I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering Intern at a Particle Board plant, and they have asked me and several other interns to figure out what they need to get 1 of the 2 Faro arms that they retired around 10 years ago back into service so that they can use them to inspect and record data from board that have issues (think warpage and inconsistent thicknesses). 1 of the 2 Arms as never been used at all, and I haven't confirmed, but I believe they retired them because something broke on the one that they were using. I also think that them being a little complicated to use was another reason that the retired them. Anyone that knew how to use/set up these arms has either forgotten or doesn't work there anymore.

Obviously, a Faro arm is overkill and for the data we need to measure, but I am definitely interested in learning how to set it up and use it, as I think it would be a good skill to have.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. Will we even be able to use it for what we want it to do? Like I said, way way overkill for particle board, but will we be able to map out thin/thick spots in the board? What about warpage in a board? They currently want to measure warpage with the board lying flat on a table, I am well aware that isn't the proper way to measure warp, but would it be possible to measure the warp with the board flat.
  2. What do we need as far as setting up the mounts goes? Can it pretty much just get set on a table and calibrated and its good to go so to speak?
  3. Software: We still have a license for cam2 from 2015. Will we be able to use this license on the latest version of cam2? And should we spec out the computer to run this thing for the 2015 version or the Latest version. Or maybe someone is aware of a software that would work better for us as opposed to cam2?
  4. Training: How in the hell am I supposed to learn how to use this thing, will I have to convince the company to pay to have someone teach us how to use it again, or would I be able to figure out how to measure what I want to measure on my own using the power of the internet?
  5. What else should I be thinking about/asking about. Right now, this project is in its infancy, so I'm just trying to figure out what issues we might run into as we move along with the project.

If you need clarification for anything that I just said, feel free to ask, as I'm not familiar with anything to do with probing arms or precision Metrology. But like I said, I'm super excited to get the opportunity play around with a high-tech measuring device.

Thank you in advance!

DIN 20457-2021-06 Tolerance table

Goodmorning to all. Off course my work needs me to approve 3 moulds asap (like today) but i can not find a free copy of the tolerance table for the mentioned DIN norm, 20457-2021-06. I just need the tolerance table for TG7. Is anybody able to help me find this quickly?

Thanks!

Edit: got it!

Can polyworks or hexagon Spatial Analiser get a CAD or mesh from a cloud or points?

For people who work with those software, does it have the capability to do it?

There are few people in my company that have used it mostly to produce tolerance maps but never to reverse engineer.

CMM fixturing

Hi

How do you usually plan your CMM fixturing. Do you produce a bespoke fixture or use modular equipment?

What considerations you take being part agnostic!

Should I stay away from Keyence? What would you recommend instead?

Hey ya'll,

Our small family machine shop is in need of some measuring equipment. I'll be honest, we don't have much in the way of QC right now, and I would like to improve things. If you check my last post I made to r/machinists, you can get a better idea of what my situation is currently. We are trying to get some contracts which require a level of QC and record keeping that hasn't been necessary to us before. I only know the difference between a CMM and optical comparator from a quick google search, and nobody here has ever used either.

I was just told that we have a Keyence salesperson coming in tomorrow to try and sell us either a LM-X or IM-8000. After a quick google search I came across some posts in this sub that made me want to stay away from them and find something better. What would you suggest? Something idiot-proof (I know that probably doesn't exist lol) and automated would be fantastic. Good customer service would also be a big plus. If you can point me in the right direction, I can do better research. Right now I don't even know where to start.

Also, if you have any advice on setting up a basic system for QC like record keeping, calibrating, what tools/equipment to get, or anything else I would love to hear it. Right now we have nothing of the sort, but I'm trying to improve things here.

Thank you, looking forward to hearing your thoughts
