This is my recreation of the Lion eating a sun for my videogame, a symbol of 16th century alchemy meaning mercury dissolving gold. There are many more representations of the same era, but this is my favorite one.

The so-called Dalmatic of Charlemagne. The only medieval liturgical vestment kept in the Treasury of St Peters is this dalmatic. It is a masterpiece of the art of embroidery practiced in Constantinople during the eleventh century.

Aachen Cathedral, the Ambo of Henry II, the final Ottonian ruler of the HRE († 1024). A masterpiece of goldsmith craft that could double as a decent-sized repository of rare stones and crystals. This is my picture. There are many others like it on the Internet, but this one's mine.

Does anyone know the historical context or source of this piece of woodcut art?

A friend of mine got this as a tattoo, and we want to find out the historical significance.

Hour book from Rouen, 1475

Can someone help me identify this bird from an hour book?

I've been looking through bestiaries, but I cannot figure out what type of bird it is!

Thanks!

Parts the early Gothic tower (12th c.), spire (13th c.) and Flamboyant transept (1560) of Senlis Cathedral, with a vernacular building in the foreground. Had a great time despite finding the cathedral closed.

Picture I took of several carved colonnettes from St Denis abbey (where there's relatively little mediaeval art remaining today) at the Musée de Cluny, Paris. Earlier 12th century.
