Hi everyone
I'm having an issuse with a Debian 11 MATE on a touchpanel pc. Whenever a tooltip is displayed (yellow tooltip) it will not disappear. I need to plugin a mouse and hover over the tooltip so that it disappears. This will not happen with the touchfunction.
Is there a way to completely disable the tooltips? I tried dconf editor but that doesn't work (org/mate/panel/general).
I also tried to disable the emulated "click and drag" option from the touchpanel pc.
Any ideas?
Thank you in advance.
One thing that annoys me is that when I hover over some menu entries to a submenu and I accidentally touch another parent entry with my mouse arrow brisk instantly switches to the submenu entry of the other parent. So if I want to start a certain program from the graphics section I really have to keep an eye on not to touch Internet, Video etc..
Does anybody know how I could set up a delay of let's say 20ms?

Let's look back at some memorable moments and interesting insights from last year.

It took me some time to figure out, so I decided to post it here. In case anyone wondered, the source for the panel layout indicator's flags is /usr/share/icons/mate/scalable/animations/. You can just replace the .svg images in the folder. Upon reboot, you'll see the custom flags on the panel.
Hello! Brand new Ubuntu 22.04 installation. Put Mate on yesterday. I bring up the desktop. click menu in the upper left corner, the menu appears for about a second then closes. Anyone seen this before? Anyone know how to make the menu persist long enough for me to select an application? Thanks!
They are ordered alphabetically but I need them to be ordered by date of creation. Is this possible?

Mate is missing the Window switching feature using Super+N . ( Seems there was a dock ( mate-dock-applet ) , but no longer available. )
Any other ways to configure this shortcut ?
I am using Fedora 35, btw.
Thanks,
I installed mate on my machine and things worked great, but I wanted to have the "scale" feature, so I installed compiz, and then things started getting weird on the display.
The closest thing I've heard a name for is "screen tear", but it's more like little slim rectangles of the display are being offset and "hanging" in the wrong place for a few seconds until they get cleared up. It doesn't prevent me from working, but it is becoming an irritation over time. I even changed display back from compiz but the problem is still there now.
I'm using: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS; any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
[SOLVED] ummm, by me. :)
No idea who at MATE thought they were a good idea, but when I hover the mouse over the "Network" icon a tool-tip pops up covering the "Connect" link.
I only turn on the connection when I need it, well, I used to with Mint+Cinnamon.
How do I disable that and all tips like it?
And, if any MATE dev ever reads this.
IF you are going to use these kinds of messages and notifications, place them a little in from the corners. The ones that cover top-right corner of windows are equally a irritating as this current issue.
Oooops: "No such file or folder"
Where do I define the default Save Folder?
OR
Have it ask me where I want it saved?
Thanks
Using MATE within a VM and when I click "Shutdown" in the VM-manager it launches the MATE-Shutdown dialog with the 60-second delay.
This holds up closing everything down and I do NOT like walking away from a running PC. :)
I can use "Force Shutdown" in the VM-manager but that will not take care of other closing programs within the Guest as it is a brute-force shutdown.
Cannot believe I suffered with Cinnamon for so long. Man, MATE is awesome as so many things work better with this Ryzen laptop.
But, I have a couple of questions.
1: How can I move the icon positions (left/right) in the Panel? I like to have the most frequently used ones at the outer end, especially important when several icons look similar to these tired old eyes.
1: Cut/Copy/Paste in and out of QEMU/KVM? I am guessing there is a tweak to either QEMU or MATE to allow this. It works fine in Ubuntu and Cinnamon, but not yet MATE. How is it done?
Thanks -- and thanks to the Devs for MATE.
They kinda look like sh*t in my computer (Arch with MATE 1.26.0, that's why I'm asking here, and also because this subreddit has been incredibly helpful in the past).
My shortcut key for opening mate-menu constaintly stops working, but stays working for the session if I restart mate-menu or of I remove then re-add it to panel.
When I run "killall mate-panel" I get a pop-up asking me if I want to reload mate-menu.
I tried killall mate-menu | sleep 2s && xdotool key 'Right+KP_Enter' which looks like it works to get past the menu, but it actually doesn't work for some reason.
Is there an easy command to just force reset mate-menu, or force open it other than the keyboard shortcut command built into the applet?
OK, I was spoiled with KDE 3.5.10. And have hated KDE4 and 5 for some reason. Anyway, skip the drama. Tried Fedora 35 with MATE. Holy cow! I felt like MATE just stepped back and let me work. No passwords for a password system. When it came time for a su/sudo thing, everything worked. And did I mention that 2 second shutdown time?? Yeah, I dig that 2 second shutdown time...on hardware that's almost 10 years old! Good job mates!
How to bind the super-key to the menu in Debian 11? The keyboard shortcuts doesn't accept pressing only the super key without any extra key. I guess that's because super is a modifier key...
In other distros, e.g. EndeavorOS, this binding happens automatically, when I change the panel layout.
(In Debian I have chosen "GNOME2" as panel layout.)
I've looked up the manual Keybindings in other distros, but found nothing specific for super key to start menu.
I've asked r/linuxquestions without (sadly) any avail. My question is that if I can use the window border theme used for GNOME Apps (In MATE and other desktop environments, which differs from the installed MATE window border theme). I think it's adwaita, but I don't seem to find it in mate-look.org
Thank you very much.
(P.D: Reddit doesn't let me upload images for some reason)
Hi everyone,
is there an option in MATE to log notifications that, for example, got displayed while being away from the screen so they can be read when returning?
It's the only thing in MATE I miss and I haven't found it yet. In the notification settings I can set a theme and "do not disturb" and all that, but no logging or so.
I know that mostly the error sits in front of the screen but seems I am actually too dumb to find it :)
