Madagascar 12 day itinerary?

We are planning a 12 day trip to Madagascar in October. Unfortunately, we can’t stay longer, but we want to make the most of our time! We‘ll be doing a self-drive journey and like nature off the beaten track without many tourists, but still want to see the highlights! We’re mostly interested in hiking, great views and animal viewings, not so much in cities and relaxing at the beach. We‘ll arrive in Tana.

Do you have any recommendations what’s doable in this time / which areas you recommend to explore, or an itinerary you would follow? We’re also big on diving, but I think that only makes sense in the North and that’s probably too far by car right? (Flights seem to be pretty expensive too, so maybe we’ll skip that north part entirely?) We appreciate all tips, thank you!! :)

Minecraft project

Hi everyone! I'm a Malagasy architect who's trying to build a personal version of Antananarivo (Flat version) but which keeps some characteristics of the city (churches, Malagasy architecture, monuments...).

I want to know if there are some other people who play Minecraft and who would be able to build the city with me. We can discuss about what we can build, what new features we can add or how we organize for building some areas...

It's a project I've been working on since 2020, and just finished important features of the Haute Ville only.

If there are some people willing to join, we can try to talk about it together...

Getting married to a malagasy in the USA. Need some help with government stuff

I'm getting a lot of my information from here: Visa & Consular Services (us-madagascar-embassy.org)

  1. Does the marriage have to be registered with the Malagasy government? I think so.

"Civil union officiated by the RegistrarCondition: the groom being a citizen of Madagascar.Submit the following documents:

  • A certified copy of the Birth Certificate of both individuals issued within a six-month period or less.

  • Personal Information Form dully filled out.

  • A nuptial agreement notarized or established by an authenticated act, which later will be recorded by the Registrar.

  • Valid Malagasy Passport or a Malagasy National Identification Card."

A: I have no idea what it's talking about "Personal Information Form dully filled out.". I guess it's just saying there's a form I need to fill out.

B: Malagasy need a nuptial agreement. Is this like a prenuptial agreement in the United States?

  1. The first thing we should do is get a Consular card? You need this before you can do anything?

"Consular cardMalagasy citizen residing overseas shall register at the nearest Malagasy diplomatic post and will be issued a Consular Registration Card.**The Consular Registration Card, valid for three (03) years, needs to be referenced henceforth for every consular document request. It is renewable.**The registration is free, please mail the following documents to the Consular Office:

  • The Registration Form
  • One passport-size photo
  • Copy of a valid passport
  • Proof of residence
  • One prepaid return envelope addressed to the applicant
  • Copy of a valid Malagasy ID card (CIN, Passport or Driving license)"

Must-do's in Antsiranana?

Hello everyone, this year I will spend a month in our beautiful country and I have so far never been in Antsiranana, the only northern part I've been to was Nosy Be. We will spend about a week in Antsiranana and will have access to a car, but I wanted to ask you all what you would absolutely recommend to do in and around Antsiranana. Of course there are a lot of "must sees" that are mostly for tourists, but I want to know what a local or someone who knows the are well would recommend.

Things we've been looking into:

Mer d'Emeraude Montagne d'ambre The Jungle Park

Any thoughts on those? Or further recommendations?

Misaotra betsaka in advance :)

Edit: idk why the downvote but ok... For context I live in Europe but my father is from Madagascar. I've been there only 2 times so far due to the very expensive costs of flying there but I am very excited to go back. My family is mostly from Antananarivo and Antsirabe. Last time we went to visit we also spent a few days on Nosy-Be, the first time we visited Sainte-Marie as well. We always wanted to see Antsiranana as my father spent a big part of his childhood there but due to the bad road we were never able to so we will catch up on that this year

Want to de-stress? I wonder if there will be anyone who will read the ad until the end, I doubt it but we'll see

I'm from Madagascar and I would like to talk about life, projects, and a bit of everything, no matter where you're from, whether you're local or foreign. Please know that this is not for the purpose of meeting people. But I have the impression that on this subreddit dedicated to Madagascar, there is no one, because when you post an ad, it is rare for people to respond.

If you feel like making new virtual acquaintances and talking about a bit of everything, come, let's get to know each other; it might bring us something good, new ideas or Maybe it will help us improve our language skills .

Why are place names in Madagascar so long??

Sorry if this gets asked a lot but why are the place names so long, is it some quirk of the language? I mean look at Google Maps, no other country in the world compares to Madagascar in place name length. Antananarivo, Ambatondrazaka, Belo Tsiribihina, Ambohimanatrika, Maevatanana, Tsiroanomandidy etc. How do you even remember these?

Fill up your bags when going to Madagascar !

Will you visite Madagascar? Please fill up your bags before leaving !

Personally I use to travel "light" = with the minimum of bagages (T-Shirts, etc. I buy locally)

but not when travelling to Madagascar: I fill up my bags with all kind of things that I do not use anymore !

2nd hand clothes, old cell phones, etc., I even take the dismounted spare parts of my car with me: because an old brake is still good for another 20.000 km ! And the Malagasy use them: you'll find your old "Nokia" still in operation (wow, if you've got a 89€ cell phone, you'll buy that girl for a week), my old clothes I hand over at the church after arrival (it could be an association also): everything is recycled and used in Madagascar. And be sure; even if it's completely done they'll still find another utility for them.

And in case that it's broken: they repair it, and they have the parts and will it quicker than anybody abroad ! This is one of the fantastic sides of Madagascar that I love !

Take the chance to get ridd off your "old stuff" and have them recycled: by the Malagasy.

Trip to Madagascar

Hi everyone!

I'm a Mauritian planning a trip to Madagascar and looking for some advice from those who've been there or locals. I'm trying to figure out how to make the most of my visit without breaking the bank.

  • Budget Tips: What are some ways to enjoy the trip affordably? Any recommendations for budget accommodations, transportation, or dining?

  • Places to Visit: What are the must-see locations in Madagascar? I’m interested in both popular tourist spots and lesser-known gems.

  • Travel Tips: Any specific advice on traveling within Madagascar? Cultural norms, local customs, or travel hacks would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to reading your suggestions!

Be careful at Nosy Be airport when paying for your visa.

This happened earlier today. I dont speak French and long story I was pressured into paying 100 euros for a 3 month visa, only to find out later it should have been 38 euro. They could see I was out of my comfort zone and could only speak English. I would advise you use Google translate and download the French language pack as i was unable to ask for assistance, the only 2 people who could (or wanted to) speak English were two passport control officers who led me past the queue and began to seemingly bully me into paying 100 euro. Even though I knew this wasn't right I basically had no choice but to bend to their bullshit as they would not let me go back to the queue. I am South African so this was a bit more of a dent in my budget than the usual traveler ( the South african Rand sucks etc) My advice in short is Go to nosy be airport, fill in the bull shit forms (bring a pen, this also made me look lost asking around) and just stand in the queue, try not look uneasy. If motioned by some dude in long pants and a cunt face to come past the queue behind the desks, rather don't. That being said this place is absolutely beautiful already on day one and I'm still looking very forward to my trip here!

Bush kabosy/mandoliny tuning/design

Salama!

18 years ago I lived in Madagascar for 3 months doing voluntary work in the bush around Fort Dauphin.

The most commonly played instrument in the villages we stayed was the 'bush kabosy' or mandoliny, strung with fishing line.

The photo at the top on this page is one that I took of these instruments: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabosy

It's a regret of mine that I didn't buy one while I was out there and I'm now thinking about making my own or seeing if I could buy a traditionally made one.

I believe they're tuned to open chords but I wondered if anypne knew more about the fret spacing or resources about how they're made and played?

Or does anyone know where I might be able to buy one from?

Misaotra!

Best way to get to Nosy Be without the corruption horror stories?

So me and my girlfriend went to Mauritius last year and it was an awesome experience. Super Chill.

We both suffer from anxiety a lot and wanted to go travel again as that always helps. We wanted to go visit Nosy Be in oct this year, to swim with the famous Whale Sharks and other animals. That's the main reason we wanted to go to Nosy be.

However, I ran into a problem while looking for car hire. Seems like there are none on the island? How do people get around?

So I researched the airport in Nosy Be for car hires and saw all the bad reviews. So much corruption, people working there to check your passport, the police, all wanting money every step of the way.

I've never seen so much bad reviews about an airport before which stresses us out to be fair.

So, I was wondering, are there other possibilities to get to Nosy Be? Flying to the mainland and then take a boat to nosy be? Or is this too much hassle?

Can I hire a car in the mainland and go on a boat with it to Nosy Be?

I have a lot of questions about this travel haha.

Thanks in advance!
