Lactose monohydrate vs anhydrous lactose?

Any couch scientists or real scientists able to help me out with my curiosity?

I have adhd and take dextroamphetamine, which contains anhydrous lactose. Before I knew that I used to think it gave me an upset stomach, but recently I realized it may have been the caffeine I was having around the same time. When I’ve taken just my pills recently it hasn’t had the same effect, I’ve been mostly fine, with maybe just a bit of pressure in my head.

Whereas not long ago I started getting headaches that lasted a couple of days and realized it was the lactose monohydrate in my sublingual Ativan, switching to oral completely eliminated that.

I’ve been trying to figure out if it’s just the amounts in the pills that are different or if anhydrous lactose and lactose monohydrate absorb differently and have lesser/greater effects? Call it scientific curiosity I suppose.

I can't drink milk alternatives

Hi,

I’m at my wits’ end and not sure what to do. I’m pretty sure I’m lactose intolerant because I can’t drink milk or eat yogurt and cheese. But here’s the weird part—milk alternatives like soy, oat, and almond milk also give me the same issues.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone have any insight into what might be going on? I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

[Question] Possible lactose intolerance?

Never been checked officially, but i've noticed if I have too much my body REALLY doesn't like me later on. Cheese iv'e never had issues with, but if I drink too much milk (Or cream) my stomach gets all upset for a while.
(A single glass of milk doesn't do that, takes 2-3. But cream is just a hard no)

My mom is lactose intolerant, so its possible? Im just not sure if its worth getting looked at or not.

Had a couple slices of pizza last night

They were fucking delicious. I haven’t had good pizza in so long. And guess what? Today huge stomach ache. So fucking annoying. So I officially can’t eat pizza anymore without lactaid (I’ve never tried it tho). Just weird. I love pizza 😭. I just wanted to complain too.

PSA: Just Cut the Cow Piss Out Your Diet

The stress about if you're taking enough pills or if the pills will work or yadada is not worth it. Treat dairy like poison.

Lactase dosing or is it something else?

I'm new to the club, unfortunately. I've eaten tons of cheese and dairy my whole life until very recently. I'm fairly certain it's a lactose intolerance based on several situations, as well as my ability to eat Bryers lactose free ice cream and lactaid sour cream with NO issues. I was thinking this rules out caesin or whey allergies. However, the few attempts where I've tried lactase in conjunction with a meal (cheese on chx sandwich, slice of pizza, parmesean cheese on pasta), I've been down and out! I even took 3, 9000 FCC pills with the last attempt of parmesean cheese pasta. Do I need higher dosing?

This popped up on my feed … are any of you actually shocked that people don’t know butter is milk?

In my 7 years of being lactose intolerant, I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve had a painful reaction to dairy because someone put butter in my food. I’ve even gone as far as to say I have an allergy (I know it’s completely different, but sometimes it’s just easier for them to take it seriously), and I would still get butter in my food. Idk, I thought this was funny that it popped up on my Google app home page

Do Lactaid pills work if lactose causes nausea?

I found out a month ago that I'm lactose intolerant and have been wanting to purchase some pills so I can eat my favorite foods again. Today I purchased some Lactaid pills, but the box said it alleviates gas, bloating, and diarrhea, but says nothing about nausea. Can I rely on these pills?

Thanksgiving cooking advice

I want to make a potato-centric potluck dish for a Thanksgiving gathering where the dietary constraints include lactose and gluten intolerance. I am looking at a wild mushroom potato gratin recipe that calls for milk, (which I can a use lactose-free version of) but it also calls for gruyere, grated. what is the closest low-to-no lactose cheese i can substitute for gruyere?

How long to eliminate

I've suspected I'm LI for some time, simply because how much I eat & how often my stomach hurts.

I haven't had dairy for 4 days (label checking) after a servere boat of gas and bloating on Friday. I've been gassy at night, though suddenly today I'm back to the same cramping I had on Friday despite not eating any dairy for days.

How long should I have it cut out before I make an assessment? It's possible I could be allergic to eggs, potatoes or gluten instead.

Am I lactose intolerant ?

I've checked the symptoms online but it just really doesn't fit.

I can eat yogurts, milk, cream, butter without any problem, and I never have any gas or nausea (well sometimes with things that too much butter I have a bit of gas but I think that's just natural, fat stuff makes you fart), but if I eat a bit too much cheese, it's explosive diarrhea an hour or two later. (Or not explosive, depends on the quantity of cheese)

I've been experimenting these past few days, it's definitely cheese causing this.

I'm 26 and these issues must have started like a year ago maybe. Isn't that a bit late for lactose intolerance ?

And if that's not it, what could it be ? I'd like to put a name of what I have but I just don't know what to look for. No matter what I google I just get lactose intolerance articles.

Also I'm french so avoiding cheese is kinda difficult and I'd rather not give up on something I've been eating just fine for most of my life.

Edit : tests were done with 18 months refined comté and some reblochon. So cheeses with a long refining time. But aren't those supposed to be low on lactose ?

Was my lactose intolerance test pseudoscience?

Hello, as a teen my aunt took me to a place where she said I was going to get tested for food intolerances, however, this aunt is a big spiritual crystal essential oil nut.

So we get to the place and there was a dude with this metal rod pen thing connected to a machine that had a pedestal, and he had these tiny capsules with lactose, oats or whatever in them, then he would place a capsule on the pedestal and press the metal rod pen thing hard into my finger and look at a dial go up, lactose and oats went high up and just said I'm lactose intolerant and that was that for years, however I still eat pizza and what not, and only thing that makes me cramp is ice cream.

I remember years later becoming an atheist and not believing in any rock, astrology signs stuff and I looked this procedure up and I think I saw that it was pseudoscience, tho idk if it was the same procedure, then I tried to look for it again and I cant find it. I dont know what this procedure is called but it doesn't make sense to me?

How can a capsule wirelessly connect to my body let alone show intolerance for it without ever coming in contact with it? Idk how the tech works but I'm starting to think all these years I might not have been intolerant at all, or just slightly.

Runny nose with lactose intolerance?

I have a persistent runny nose/post nasal drip that drives me nuts as my work involves leaning forwards a lot 😫 I took an intolerance test and it suggested lactose among other things which I’m currently eliminating from my diet. I wondered if anyone else out there has anything similar with lactose? I know I will only know for sure it’s this after eliminating and reintroducing. I do also fluctuate between having an upset tummy and being constipated which I assume could be connected but it’s the runny nose that’s driving me crazy!

If you experience something similar is there anything to help the runny/congested nose symptoms while in the process of eliminating? Am currently using saline nasal irrigation and Vicks Sinex. Thank you 🙏🏻

Am I lactose intolerant?

For almost a year I have been battling daily dry heaving, nausea, lack of appetite, burping, etc, every morning to mid day after being tapered off a medication. I have been to a multitude of doctors, including GI, and still do not have any answers.

After a morning of feeling particularly horrible, I began thinking about what I ate last night which was a lot of dairy. (I eat dairy daily in general)

I am wondering if:

  1. Anyone has experience lactose intolerance where you don't experience symptoms right after eating dairy but the next morning/day.
  2. lactose intolerance has come on suddenly for anyone.

Lactose issues with full cream milk but not with organic full cream milk

So I'm lactose intolerant and get really bad digestive issues when I drink full cream milk or full cream yoghurt like Jalna. But I tried Paul's Farmhouse Gold Organic Full Cream Milk and I had no issues relating to lactose with it. Why is that?

Need help making a Christmas cookbook!

My friend's kid has just been diagnosed with celiac disease and lactose intolerance, which is really new territory for my friend. Who has always been a little intimidated by cooking but worked really hard since having her kid to expose her to a lot of foods so she wouldn’t become a picky eater (like her). But this new challenge has thrown her for a loop.

She’s never had to cook gluten-free or lactose-free, and finding meals that work for kid and the family has been a bit of a struggle. So, I decided that over the next month, I’m going to test out a bunch of recipes, figure out what’s tasty, and put together a little cookbook for her for Christmas. I want it to be a mix of quick, easy meals, a few fancier dishes, and some sweet treats that she and her kid can enjoy together.

The thing is, I’m not super experienced with gluten- and lactose-free cooking either beyond sweets. I'm going to take a look through my recipes to see what fits the bill but if anyone has any tried-and-true, accessible recipes or tips, I’d love a bit of a head start. I'm definitely going to take a look at all the amazing recipes already posted here!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Best price per pill/dose

I'll use the CVS brand as a reference. For a single slice of pizza, I'll need to take a minimum of 4 pills (taken between bites) to not have any issues. I think I'm more sensitive than others.

So I find myself burning thru lactaid pills rather quickly.

Is there a brand/product that gives me the best bang for my buck so that I reduce the amount I spend on pills?

I just want more lactaid per dollar spent :)

Does anyone have similar symptoms?

Lactose makes my nose vessels swell so I can't breath *congestion badddd I also realised it's made me constipated for the past 10+ years (I have hashimoto's so I assumed it was this till I went Lactose free 2/3 weeks ago)

This has become severe over the past 8 months, I had to change brands of my levothyroxine which contains Lactose and had no idea it was causing me hell

I accidentally took a headache painkiller syndol didn't realise it contained lactose I couldn't breathe within 20 minutes of taking it

cvs brand lactase pills...

i previously posted about this then deleted it a while back. but i tried cvs brand lactase pills, and i have no idea why, but i had a severe reaction to them. (lactaid works fine for me fyi, now i'm terrified to try another brand because this was my first time branching out.)

warning for tmi/bathroom talk:

so i took the cvs lactase pills several times before realizing that was the problem and not the food i'd consumed or an incorrect dosage. by the time i'd realized, it was too late. >!of course, there was severe cramping and stomach upset. there was also loads of blood and mucus in my stool. i think i had some kind of severe inflammation in my digestive tract but i don't know for sure. it was excruciatingly painful. i could barely walk or even sit up in bed, and i have a high pain tolerance. severe stomach and back pain, a mix of constipation and diarrhea. i have ibs, and at the time was concerned it was ibd, so i wrote it off as a health issue until i realized it must've been the lactase pills. stopped using them, it took a while but it finally subsided. tried them once again—but much less—with the same result (though less severe since it was just one dose). i had a colonoscopy and endoscopy months after this, and i was shocked that it was all clear with how debilitating the pain was/still sometimes is, unrelated to this incident. though to be clear, i'm fairly certain those two weeks were just a reaction to the lactase pills. i still haven't gotten the biopsies back but it seems like the doctor anticipated them being 100% normal as well.!<

all this to say, be careful. but also, has anyone experienced something like this with a specific brand of lactase pills and not others? why would one brand be fine, but another cause a huge reaction? i know they're probably formulated differently, but damn lol.

Lactase pill intolerance mimics food poisoning?

You read the headline correctly. My wife is mildly lactose intolerant but it has gotten worse in recent months. About a month ago, she decided to take a store brand's lactase pill before eating a cheesy soup that gave her bad gas the night before. Well, she ended up in the bathroom with what looked like straight-up food poisoning. Fast forward to today, another cheesy meal, and she took another lactase pill (a different brand than the first). Boom. Apparent food poisoning again. She's had other cheesy meals in-between and had discomfort, but only with the lactase pills did she have such a reaction.

To preemptively answer an obvious question, I did have the same meal she had for the first incident and had no negative reaction. I smelled the leftovers the next day and nothing seemed amiss, but I poured it out regardless. As for today's meal, I, too, have eaten it and I'm fine. Thus our attention is focused on the pills.

Is this a known issue for some people? Searches haven't turned up much in the way of useful info.

Creating an email list for my new allergy app!

Hi everyone, not sure if you guys saw my post yesterday but basically I’m creating an app that is catered towards helping people with allergies better understanding what’s in the food they eat when dining out. I plan on partnering with restaurants and takeaways locally and expanding from there however the first partnerships will obviously be the hardest to get. That being said I’m putting together an email list of people with allergies to show restaurants that there is a need for this kind of app.

It would be brilliant if anyone could leave their email in the comments or direct message me it. Thank you guys for reading this and I hope you guys can help me along the way in helping make this app a reality! 😊

Sausage issues

This is a vent:
I went to whole foods and bought an Italian sausage from the butcher section. I though I was good, because in Italy, where I'm from, meat does not contain milk.
I ate it yesterday, and I started feeling funny. I was at school and I started bloating a bit, but nothing much. As soon as I got home hell broke loose. I was fine after that, but it felt less severe than usual. I studied, ate and went to sleep.
I woke up at 6:30 AM this morning, with the worst cramps, but I couldn't go to the bathroom and I don't know why. I got to school 15 minutes ago, with the worst cramps, and now I'm in the bathroom, wishing I was dead.
I miss Italy.

Whey isolate

Hi all,

I have tried a couple of whey isolate brands, generally good quality but I still get skin flair ups pretty quickly. Should I just give up on whey isolate or is there a super pure version that may work without effects?

Symptoms greatly reduced once I started taking ADHD meds

I haven't been officially diagnosed with lactose intolerance, but I had very pronounced symptoms (bloating, explosive diarrhea) for more than 15 years, and I eventually managed to correlate them with consuming food containing lactose. The symptoms would be so severe that a tiny piece of chocolate or even a sausage containing lactose would often quickly lead to a rendezvous with a white throne.

For the last few years I've been helping myself with lactase pills, and those would often be not effective enough, so the solution was to take a few pills at once to feel safe enough to venture outside after a meal containing dairy products.

Recently I got medicated for ADHD (with an amphetamine based stimulant), and I noticed that my tolerance to lactose has substantially increased. I can now consume noticeable amounts of cheese or ice cream without immediate effects, and while large amounts of dairy food would still lead to bloating later, the bloating would be less severe and would almost never lead to any more drastic manifestations I commonly had before.

Looking up online didn't reveal any mentions of a known connection between ADHD and lactose intolerance, or that ADHD meds could decrease the symptoms. But I have no other explanation, as the effect has been persistent for weeks and there were no other noticeable changes in my diet or lifestyle.

Did anyone else experience anything like that under similar circumstances?
