Not taken seriously.

So my LO has a dairy allergy & I'm simply intolerant of it. However, when we go out to eat, I usually just communicate both as allergies (because it's easier).

Actual phone conversation today, making Mother's Day brunch reservations:

Me: I see this is a $70 pp brunch. Both my daughter and I have allergies to dairy, will there be anything for us to eat? Restaurant: Can't you just take a Lactaid before you eat?

........... uhm. No?!?!?!

The fact that I am intolerant is irrelevant, as she actually thought I was allergic. Also, who wants to spend a holiday of celebration feeling terrible?!

Allergy vs Intolerance

If you are allergic to dairy, how did you know? I’ve known I was lactose intolerant for a really long time, but then it got worse- stomach pain within minutes of eating dairy, itchy mouth, raw mouth, etc along with the later more normal issues. I’m going to make an appointment with an allergist to be sure, but what tipped you off?

Does going dairy free speed up hair growth?

I’m noticing that I may be sensitive to dairy and since it can inflame our bodies, I’m wondering if dairy free (lack of inflammation) will help my hair grow faster? Since less energy is going towards digestion, fighting off allergies and inflammation etc etc?

Anyone ever had insomnia from dairy?

I had this happen twice so far. Only took like 100g of natural yogurt and a teaspoon of colostrum.

Feel out of breath just before I enter sleep which knocks me back up. Feels like the mattress is quivering. And extreme levels of flatulence.

Meal kits / frozen dinners

I live in Ontario, Canada and am trying to find dairy-free ready-to-cook fresh or frozen meals that are available at supermarkets (i.e. not a meal delivery service). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hot chips?

I crave heat. I used to be a big fan of flamin hot cheetos, takis, stuff like that, but since going dairy free for my wife's allergy I haven't found anything near spicy enough. I recently tried the Havoc (Havok? I can't remember the spelling) hot bulgogi chips and they were delicious, and a much better level of heat, but still not enough. I've also had the takis hot nuts which hit the spot, as there's one flavor that is dairy free but I don't wanna bring them in the house/eat them often since they "may contain".

Has anyone else found a chip that is similar in heat to flamin hot, but is dairy free?

Sour Cream Onion Chips??

My fiancee really loves sour cream and onion chips, but she recently discovered she has a dairy allergy and it's gotten pretty bad, she can't have any of this flavor of chips - we've checked the ingredients list of all at the store. She likes the Funyuns flavored Lay's, but its not the same and not always in stock. Does anyone know of a completely dairy free alternative? (whey is okay, other dairy is not okay)

Non-dairy Ensure equivalent?

An elderly friend's doctor suggested Ensure to help with appetite and wasting issues -- but it turns out Ensure contains dairy, and my friend is lactose intolerant.

Can anyone suggest a dairy-free equivalent?

She isn't vegetarian, so it needn't be Vegan -- just no dairy ingredients.

[Edit: thanks again, everyone! She ended up buying a case of Orgain.]

A La Carte Meal Services

I'm searching for a meal delivery service that is dairy allergy friendly that provides a la carte options. Everything I'm finding seems to have some sort of plan that requires you to make weekly purchases. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Easy dairy-free dinner?

This is so stupid because I’ve been allergic to whey my entire life but I literally don’t know how to cook. At all. I can do eggs and ramen and pasta. My husband is an amazing man and he cooks most (if not all) nights. Of course, he cooks for me dairy-free. I want to cook for him for once giving him an amazing dinner (that I can eat too).

Of course I’ve looked online but my limitations are money and cooking experience. I can’t afford a lot of the ingredients required if the centerpiece is like, a nice steak or something. SO- what’s your cheapest, most idiot proof recipe?!

Carmel listed on dairy free item?

I bought some poptarts that don't list milk as an allergen but it says there's Carmel in it? It doesn't say Carmel color, just Carmel. Anyone know if it's still dairy free?

Today I decided to make dairy free/vegan blueberry cheesecake. I experimented by just using dairy free substitutes from a normal cheesecake recipe and it worked!

Perfect Bar alternative?

I love Perfect Bars, the refrigerated ones made with nut butter, but, they all use nonfat dry milk in them! Does anyone know of a similar bar? For reference, they are: refrigerated, sweetened with honey (I can't do artificial sweeteners), mostly nut butter, and not that sweet. I do not like date-based bars, like GoMacro- they are too sweet for me. Same with Clif bars. ETA: I also can't eat wheat, so gluten free and without modified wheat starch!

Wedding inclusivity!

I am at a wedding and not only did they ask for allergy information in the RSVPs for dinner, they have dairy free cupcakes. I have not been able to eat cake at a wedding since I had to stop eating dairy. I am so incredibly happy!

Dairy free cream cheese to make homemade crab rangoons?

MUST hold up to heat. I’ve tried them all, but I’ve never tried to make crab Rangoon so I’m not sure which ones melt into liquid and which ones will hold shape. Anyone done this before?

And to be clear I’m not looking for suggestions based on taste, I’m looking for ones that specifically holds up to heat. Thanks!!

Those of you who have cut 100% diary out of your life , do you make exception ?

Like in an occasion like a wedding or birthday or something like that where you might have a piece of something that’s not diary free ?

Dairy free at a hibachi restaurant

I was invited to a hibachi restaurant for a friends birthday and am stressing about what I could possibly order. I’m pretty sure almost everything on the grill is cooked in butter. Has anyone ordered something and asked them not to use butter before ?

Easy protein choices?

Developing late-in-life intolerance which means taking things like cheese, milk, and peanut butter off the table. Cheese and peanut butter have been easy sources of protein, especially to grab and go in the mornings. What do I do without those? Looking specifically for ideas about breakfast and snacks that are protein-loaded. Packaged is fine, or something I can make ahead and portion out as needed. Thanks in advance!

Where to buy nuts?

Strange question, but I actually noticed a lot of nuts are "Packaged in the same facility as peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, sesame, and milk products." I am trying to find nuts that aren't cross-contaminated with dairy, but I'm struggling to find a good brand.

Any thoughts?

Refused allergy testing??

Just wondering if anyone has had anything similar - and looking to vent. I'm in the UK, 29F, recently realised that a bunch of vague symptoms I'd been having for years lined up with dairy allergy or intolerance; ruled out lactose intolerance when they continued after using Lactofree products. Started trialling no dairy a couple of days ago and started seeing small improvements quickly - eczema clearing up, less overall fatigue etc.

I know the advice is not to make major dietary changes without speaking to your doctor (particularly for me as I am almost 35w pregnant), so I booked an appointment. Doctor told me, without asking about my symptoms or anything, that they don't test for dairy allergies. Period. Not a thing they do. "Isn't there a blood test or something?" "No."

I must have been looking at her like she was mad because she started with the "I've been a doctor for twenty years and this is never something we've done". I said that due to my anxiety and the fact that I do have some respiratory symptoms I was hoping to get peace of mind that things aren't going to get worse in future if I eliminate dairy and then get cross contaminated. She said that doesn't happen. Knowing that I also have coeliac disease, she then said "it's like if you had a little bit of gluten after being gluten free for a while, just a little bit would only cause a small reaction". (This is completely untrue.) And that was it. No referral, no testing, no nothing.

Afterwards I googled it and sure enough, an official NHS site came up listing allergy blood testing as a possibility. She made me feel so stupid for insisting it was a thing but I KNEW it was. I've contacted my dietitian for a second opinion but I am absolutely livid. It's not something I do even after years of being treated poorly by doctors but I'm considering putting in a complaint.

Has this happened to anyone else?? What did you do??

Help with an ice cream recipe

So, my mom is dairy free, sugar free, and gluten free. Medically, not by choice. And I’ve been trying to look into making her some ice cream that is dairy free, gluten free, and sugar free all at the same time. I’ve tried looking it up but I’m having trouble finding actual recipes. Also, I’m unsure if this is the right sub for this post. If there’s a better sub for this, please let me know! Any help is greatly appreciated!
