Fire Toolbox is used to modify FireOS but is not a full ROM and does not root a Fire device. All Toobox mods disappear after a factory reset. IMPORTANT: For FireOS 7.3.2.2 or above, Fire Toolbox is not currently able to change some things as it could in older firmware versions. Amazon has patched FireOS with a recent update that breaks changing or disabling certain features. Toolbox devs are working on this.
Sideloading most APKs, including the Google Play Store itself, does not require rooting.

Fire 8HD with 4gigs of RAM for 38$ after Fire7 trade in is amazing. Typing on this bad boy of course. Used Android Police guide as usual to install the latest google play store and everything is working except Google Play Games crashes and doesn't synch saves. BUT you can install Netflix from Amazon Store then install Netflix from Play store and then it will let you install netflix games which do synch across devices.
8 inch tablets are a great sweet spot as you can fit it in pants pockets. It's cheap so you don't freak out about dropping it. Fits in a smaller sling so you can take it along with you nicely. 10 inch tablets are just not as portable. I just can't get over what you get for 38$ after trade in of some garbage tablet that probably doesn't work right after a year. Slap an antireflective PET screen protector to wipe out glare and you are good to go.
The tablet always hovers around 3.2 gigs of RAM used in dev settings so I think the 4gigs of RAM is a great sweet spot. I don't really get any reloads of apps going through my usual and a game. The FireMax 4gb would be a good choice for a larger tablet. The FireOS is very capable with very little RAM.
My App picks from Android store, I get video apps from Amazon in general and MS apps too:
Darker - lowers screen brightness this is a game changer when you want to use it late at night to read. Don’t go lower than 40% in app or movies get too washed out.
Samsung Internet with Adblocker plugin installed - Gets the most out of your slower CPU, you can install many websites as Apps which are sometimes faster than the app. Like for instance Reddit I just save a web app link shortcut to “Homepage”.
Youtube - Runs as fast as lightning absolutely no slowdown at all made for this device, it can run in a popup window and in snapped to one side. I watch youtube snapped to a side with the Samsung Internet on the other side to watch and surf.
Xodo - PDF viewer and markup this thing flies you can reasonably take notes on your fire 8hd with this wonderful.
Youtube Music or Amazon Music - both have under settings an eq to play with you can tune the EQ to make the speakers less tinny for music I up the highs and the lows leaving the mids. You should turn off the custom EQ when watching movies the volume gets too low I think the speakers are tuned well for Movies.
Files from Google - really nice file manager that can be pinned to your Quick Settings tiles pulldown.
Gboard I installed via Fire Toolkit on XDA i don’t think there is anyway to swap out your keyboard otherwise. I really like the popup floating keyboard.
The real letdown of this tablet is gaming it just isn’t fast enough for some reason. You can game like slower games or puzzle games just not that great for FPS or Racing. Wish it had a higher quality screen and pen support too.
I have Surface tablets , Chrome tablets, and Samsung Android tablets all faster than this but keep on coming back to this deivce for it's portablility.
I have a YouTube Music client that I'm developing for Fire tablets that uses the music.youtube.com webpage in a webview. It works on my phone with Android 13 but not my Fire 7 5th gen with Android 5.1.
Would anyone like to test this on a newer Fire tablet? DM me for the APK.
I bought an app on the Amazon app store. It works on my Kindle Fires. It worked on my phone for more than a year. When I got new phones, could never get it going.
I get a message saying their was a problem with my network, which is not true. My Wide area and WiFi were both working fine. I tried using both separately. Same message. Any ideas?
Thanks
I bought a brand new Fire HD 8 (12th Gen, Fire OS 8.3.3.1 November 2024).
I downloaded the four Google play install files, following instructions (checking I had the correct versions for my device(.
I was installing them in order. I've done this before on an older model successfully.
The last install fiile, "com.android.vending" is a *.bin file and not *.apk.
The Native Amazon WPS office app opens the *.bin file to a garbled mess rather than install it.
I don't have easy access to a PC to install any PC based tool. I can't find a way of disabling or uninstalling WPS office on the Fire HD8.
No Google play store icon is present on the homescreen after successfully installing the first 3/4 Google play files, so I can't install an app yet from Google.
Is there a fire-only workaround for this? Or is my only option to use a PC based tool (which is currently difficult for me?).
Many thanks, I'd gratefully appreciate any advice
So I bought an 8th Gen Fire Hd8 tablet about 1 month ago with the sole purpose of it being used as a device dashboard hub (cost me £25 instead of £150 for an echo hub) only to find that the new update has apparently taken device dashboard away/ been disabled. Does anyone know if I can rewind the update or if I can get it back somehow? Using the smart home section on show mode seems farcical if there is an easier way.
TLDR: How can I get device dashboard back?
my model is a Fire Tablet 5th Gen
i was trying to install cyanogen mod 12 on it but i was required to flash the firmware because newer versions didnt work, so i tried to flash one of the older firmware files and it looked like it successfully flashed (i did this through apply update through ADB) and then i rebooted, but the thing wouldnt turn on at all, i eventually found out that when i plugged it into my computer the device MT65xx Preloader would keep appering and dissapering in device manager when the thing was plugged in, this usually happens on reboot, MT65xx Preloader appers then dissapers and then the device shows the amazon logo, but now it keeps appering and dissapering and my device display is black, i need to fix this.
(i cant contact them for a replacment, my warranty was void from the start anyway as this tablet is old, also cant access the recovery menu)
Yesterday I got a Fire HD10, I just wanted it to go under my desktop monitor. I already have an Echo device in the room so not sure if that's a conflict but I don't think so.
Anyway, I was messing around with it and saw the show mode toggle, clicked it and released what it was and turned it off (by toggle again) and then left it. Today...the toggle is completely vanished. It's updated to the latest version, I've restarted the device. What else can I do? Even when I ask her to do it with voice she just says "I'm not sure how to help you with that"
A while back I got my mother a new kindle which she shelved to continue using her old one since she preferred it. Last week the old one finally stopped playing Audible which was her main reason for using it, since she has tinnitus and uses it on a night, and so far it's really struggling. It keeps giving constant playback errors on her audiobook, stopping it at best or forcing it to be redownloaded entirely at worst, as well as keeps pausing her audiobook to tell her she's offline on a night - which she is because why waste the battery when the book is already downloaded onto the fire? She doesn't want to be online and has nothing else open on the fire. Is there any way to fix these problems? She essentially just wants it as a big screen to use Audible because her vision isn't great so using it on her phone wasn't viable. The fire says that it's on the current version and on the appstore there's no option to update Audible so that should be updated? On the options it says "Audible 2090151410". I'm not sure what to do to really help fix it.
I notice for a while people here are angry at amazon.
whenever there's a post asking to buy the tablet, people will say buy a different brand!
now for me I'm angry at them for doing two things:
1 releasing max without 3.5mm audio jack
that was simply a horrible move. and I'll buy a different tablet if they did it again.
2 changing the photo app
and that's literally the dumbest thing that I can't even grasp how they went with it!
having two photo apps and one just to go to the web site is beyond ridiculous.
so are you guys angry about the same things or is there's more?
I did not buy max and I won't advice people to get it if they like to watch and listen a lot. but the 10 2023 and 8 2024 are still great and probably better than other tablets of the same price.
so for me I'll still prefer fire hd to other tablets if they kept 3.5mm audio jack.
We only have a few more months until Amazon inevitably refreshes the two tablets. What do we think the upgrades are going to be?
Since the Fire Max 11 is now targeting a more "premium" (midrange) market, I'm assuming that we'll go from the 4GB ram to 6GB. That and that we'll get UFS instead of eMMC storage.
It'll probably be a few more years until we get a model with cellular, since with the Amazon track record, I don't think we're getting another new cpu upgrade. It'll most likely be like the Fire HD 8 with just a slight ram upgrade and storage upgrade.
Lmk your thoughts in the comments.
So I have minecraft in my FireOS tablet, and it took a while but I got my tablet's minecraft APK file to my android phone. It works for a few seconds, but then I get this and nothing that I do works, only closing the app and opening it again. Any thoughts? Head empty?
hi, I'm considering purchasing an sd card for my table. I'm wondering what type of sd card should I buy.
I read that the device may not be able to handle UHS-II and would just default to UHS-I. Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!
We’re looking for a tablet that our little boy can use that is compatible with the Lego Super Mario app. He has an old kids fire tablet (8th version I think it’s called) and we can’t put it on there.
Does anyone have the Kindle Fire HD 10 Kids Pro? Are you able to download the Lego apps? Do they work correctly? Thanks for any thoughts!
Hi there everyone, I have been lurking on this sub for a few days now because of the new update that wrecked my kindle’s downloaded images. From what I have found out, it looks like Amazon basically just released an update that doesn’t even work, and now are dealing with the consequences of it, but they have not even publicly announced that the new update is actually a complete failure.
So did I miss anything important?
Here’s a picture of it, that’s the only picture i could find of it online and i’ve searched every keyword up and i’ve even put it on google reverse image search and i still can’t find it.
Hey everyone! I have the same issue across six Fire 8 tablets. Everything works, Internet, Kindle, music but when trying to access the app store we get the "network unreachable". Was on with Amazon chat for three hours the other day and was escalated to their advanced team. All they suggested was to clear cache on Framework Content and Content Manager then do another factory reset. This of course doesn't work. Tablets won't do any system updates either. Anyone dealt with this or am I doomed to sit in chat for hours again? Thanks in advance for any replies!
Hello,
I was thinking about buying a tablet now on Black week, mainly focusing on reading academic texts on pdf, highlighting them and taking some notes. One of the most affordable options is the Amazon Fire. I was wondering if it is good for it, considering screen quality to keep reading on it for hours, and how functional it is.
Also, any thoughts on whether I should get the 8 or 10 inches? I intend to lie it on my desk while I study, not hold it, so weight and size should not be detrimental in this regard.
Thanks!
I was going to buy an iPad 9th generation for my grandkids to use when they come over as they always want to use mine. But now I see how inexpensive a Kindle Fire 10” would be.
If I get a Kindle Fire 10” (non kids version) can I get the Netflix and YouTube apps? And how difficult are they to install? Apple gal here lol.
Is it possible to add the Amazon Kids+ program to a non-Fire tablet? I'm OK with sideloading, etc if required, but have not found any information on this. I have a one year Kids+ subscription, along with a Fire HD Kids Pro tablet.
I am trying to add the Kids+ interface/app to one of my Samsung tablets if possible. The Samsung Kids functionality doesn't match Amazon's, plus I have the paid access through Amazon to many exclusive apps.
Hello!
I purchased the Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet for my kid for Christmas. I received an email after purchasing the tablet to set up the account. I followed Amazon’s steps to set up the tablet so when we receive it, everything is on there. I picked some free apps to download on the Amazon app. Amazon asked me to verify if I was the parent so I did by my Amazon login & password. Then it asked me to verify the security code on the card I have saved with Amazon do I did. A minute later I received a charge on that debit card from “visa ani advice for $0.00” does anyone know if this is normal?? Amazon plus kids is free for a year.
There was a drop box of notifications that they added a "new" feature that will rove content that you haven't used in a while. I didn't wish to turn this on..but may have accidentally. The reason I think this is true is books I ha e been reading I am having to reload. Issue is I don't know where this special feature is to turn it off or what it is called to Google it. Cam someone help me? Thank you!
Doesn't open up for me. It started yesterday. I can go on the browser version just fine. But I wanted to try the app and yet, it won't open. Had anyone else have this problem?
Oh and I did uninstall and reinstalled it again
Mine has stopped working, read on as Amazon support site it will soon follow Photos and point to a web version on Silk.
Hey everyone, as you can see from the title I’m just trying to install YouTube kids on my son’s fire tablet 7 12th generation. It’s currently running Fire OS 8.3.3.1, I’ve turned on install from unknown services, downloaded the Google Account Manager, Frameworks, Services, and play store but everytime I try to “install” the app it says “App Not Installed” no matter what I do. Did they completely patch getting YT kids on these tablets or is there a new workaround? Any help or advice is much appreciated!!
New to the Fire tablets- switched over from Apple for the kids and I LOVE how amazing the parental controls are. They’re so good that I can’t even figure out how to get around them 🤣
We are trying to log our 13 year old into the Wall Street Journal so he can access content we have a subscription to. I do understand that the Kindle app no longer supports WSJ (from what I can tell). I have specifically downloaded the WSJ app.
When I go in the app and try to sign him into our account, it says “FEATURE IS BLOCKED — TRY SOMETHING ELSE!” in a black box in the middle of the screen.
I have enabled web access (previously blocked) and even removed almost all the parental controls I have enabled just so I can try to log it in.
Basically, the parental controls are too good 😅
How can I log him in so he can access the WSJ content we want him to be able to access? I do need the parental controls turned back on once I figure this out - any ideas how I can do this?
Thanks!
I can't update dragon mania legends since I'm on a kids account and it will send me to the web browser to download it but its blocked so I can't update it, what do I do?
Basically trying to figure out what's taking up all the space on my kids' tablet. It says 45GB of 56GB is used, but the itemized list only adds up to 20GB. Is there somewhere else I shoudl be looking?
