Anyone here work at local 12? I bought some welding gear from guy through OfferUp who’s in local 12 union and told me that I should look for an apprenticeship with them. I have my welding certs in stick and wire and also have my LA city license. I went in person about a month ago and they said they weren’t open until next year. Anyone here have more information or any numbers I can contact? Thank you. I’ve so far contacted local 433 ironworkers and waiting on a reply from them. At this point I just want to weld for any union.
So do I looked into it a bit and was wondering if this is just a common sense test with some math? I’ve been trying to find a practice test for it for a long time now.
Hi, just wondering if anyone here works out of 736 in Hamilton? I've been a welder for 10+ years and looking to join a trade union.
What's the work like, are you busy/are they likely to be taking in apprentices in 2025? Are you able to work enough in the GHA/GTA or do you need be away from home for stretches of time if you want to make a good living?
Also wondering about the apprenticeship process, if i have a background in welding and metalwork, is there any chance to start ahead of apprentice 1, or is everyone starting at the bottom?
I have also emailed the local, just curious to hear individual perspectives
Thanks in advance
Are ironworkers welders?
I need motivation, what do yall do to get thru the day and beat the hangover
I want to apply to my local in Florida, but I am prescribed a pain med by my doctor. Am I allowed to work while on these meds? I do ironwork for a private company atm. Doesn’t effect me since I’ve been on them for almost 10 years.
whats the hiring process like at 399. gonna apply here soon an and wondering what its gonna be like.
What does that mean? Does that mean I can’t apply there if I’m not in the jurisdiction? I live close to Philly but am not in the jurisdiction
Just got my invitation for the evaluation in about 2 or so weeks. Based on the requirements and my background (retired 0311 and former drillout hand) im pretty sure i have a good chance of passing it. I'm not bothered by heights and ive got a pretty above average sense of balance from being a high school athlete and just never allowing myself to ever really get outta shape. That being said I am 32 years old and not the spry young man i once was though I'm definitely well above the average fitness level of a man my age I dont want to make the mistake of going in cocky. Is there any extra stuff i can do to prepare in the meantime? Thanks!
Edit: I forgot to mention im 2 weeks away from completing a welding course and will be attempting to get my WABO card in fluxcore and MIG. Should I also go for SMAW? And out of curiosity, will that shorten the length of apprenticeship?
Hey all, I recently received a number of 138 on the waitlist to join union local 8, how long should I expect to wait?
What is the work like? And how much do guys get paid here?
So I’m heading in on the 20th for a test. I’ve been hitting addition, division, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, conversion of fractions to decimals, decimals to fractions. Anything else I need to study? Any geometry?
Looking into getting Rigger I and II to get into refinery work. Curious how much it translates with the Rigging for Ironworkers manual we have from international/ if there's some study guide material out there someone has used or if it's worth it to just go ahead and pay for a training course.
Anyone who has done it please let me know.
Met a guy at work that recommended Sicerts.com. Has anyone gone through this? $1197 for the full training package. How many attempts did it take you to pass?
Hey yall I’m going in on the 25th of this month for local 22 aptitude. Will they drug test as well on the initial test day?
I just got laid off a very long job and I really don't think I'm cut out for doing this type of work for the rest of my life.
I'm a local 11 apprentice, I'm just wondering if there's anything I need to know before I quit, I heard from other people that they give you a lot of shit for leaving the apprenticeship and the best thing to do is just get yourself terminated from the program.
Hello I am 20 years old about to turn 21 I live in Arizona in the phoenix area. I want to become an iron worker. Don’t have much experience with steel only been working in a steel fabrication shop for 2 years mostly just production MiG doing the same shit over and over again , hate working in a shop and the only thing is welding . I see the local 75 is the union here in AZ any members in the group please drop ur experience going through the apprenticeship or have a experience with the local 75 ik the union ain’t strong here but love to learn from the very beginning and properly taught how to do shit so when it’s all said and done
I am 19 and just joined. On my first job next Tuesday and need some tips or what it’s like
I am a first year apprentice who just got my first job doing rigging and glass work. I am currently doing rigging in my class at my union hall but we won’t be doing glass until year 2 or 3 so I was wondering if anyone knows of the hand tools I’ll need for glass work?
First year apprentice here. Now that trump won what do you think it will be like for unions?, how was work when trump was in office the first time. Heard mixed things, some old timers tell me they never lost work. Other say that Biden was the best thing to happen to unions. Thoughts on the future for Ironworkers?
Hello I’m 21 living in Sweden doing scaffs been thinking about becoming an union ironworker ( I know it’s gonna be a hard and long process but it’s one of my few dreams) but thought that it might be smart to wait to after the election. I don’t care really who wins in the states, to be honest I don’t think that anyone of the candidates are very smart but from what I’ve heard Mr trump ain’t no fan of the unions. That he and his snobs to friends are union busters. So my question is what’s gonna happen now? Will the unions receive any work at all? Will they fuck over the unions more than they already do? I appreciate all the information that someone might know. Thanks and take care!
Old school
What are you guys running for a winter jacket? I’m in Wisconsin and winters are rough, I usually have long John’s, puffy baselayer hoodie and 2 sweatshirts topped with a vest. I’m looking for something a little more mobile for on the iron/under a harness.
Isn’t that shit for electricians? Allz I know is you gotta be half cowboy to hang steel with the mexicans down here in The Lone Star
i don’t have a rebar belt where can i find a solid setup or brand of belt and body harness? something simple. only kinda belt i have is a structural belt and a klein quick release with some bolt bags. links and pictures are appreciated
To get into my local, you must pass a physical test. Carrying 70lb rebar back and forth for thirty mins, climbing 40ft up the steel and ring a bell, etc.
I’ve been trying to condition myself at my gym, doing laps with the barbell bar on my shoulder, and continuing my regular routine.
Is there anything I could do to continue to raise my chances of passing the test?
What was your “hell day” like?
Hey guys I was wondering if the osha online course is still valid as the one in person? I was told I needed at least that cert to get to work.
how hard is it to join the union rn as a 20 year old that has only worked as a painter? is there a need for iron workers where they are taking more people rn?
