Carry your weapon with you always

Ibn al-Qayyim said, “Duʿāʾ is one of the most beneficial remedies. It is the enemy of calamity; it repels it, cures it, prevents its occurrence, and alleviates it or reduces it if it befalls [one]. It is the weapon of the believer.”

[Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Dā’ wa-al-dawā’ (Mecca: Dār ʿĀlam al-Fawāʾid, 1429 AH), 11]

Look at Historical Body Counts and Misconceptions about Muslims

For decades, the term "terrorist" has been weaponized against Muslims, creating a pervasive stereotype that paints the entire Muslim community as violent. However, data from Body Count by Naveed S. Sheikh (University of Louisville) offers a powerful rebuttal to this narrative. The book presents a comparative look at death tolls attributed to various groups or civilizations between 0 to 2008 CE. The findings are eye-opening: Muslims rank fifth, far behind others such as "Antitheist" regimes and Christian civilizations.

Misattributed Violence

The death toll associated with Muslims is misleading because it lumps in actions by groups that were not Islamic in ideology or practice. A few notable examples:

  1. The Young Turks – A secular nationalist group that orchestrated the Armenian Genocide. Their betrayal of the Ottoman Caliphate and departure from Islamic principles make it disingenuous to attribute their actions to Islam.

  2. The Ba'ath Party – Responsible for significant atrocities, the Ba'ath Party was a socialist and secular regime. Leaders like Saddam Hussein governed through authoritarianism, not Sharia.

  3. ISIS – While ISIS is often branded as "Islamic," they primarily kill Muslims and flagrantly violate core Islamic tenets such as mercy, justice, and the protection of innocents. Their actions are deeply un-Islamic, and yet they are used as a stick to beat the entire Muslim community.

These examples barely scratch the surface. Many other anomalies exist but are too numerous to list here off the top of my head. The point remains: many of the figures attributed to "Islamic violence" stem from groups or individuals who abandoned Islamic teachings entirely.

Importantly, Body Count only covers the period from 0 CE onwards. This means that earlier violence by Indic civilizations, such as Hindu empires, falls outside the scope of the book. By the start of this timeline, much of the violence tied to Indic civilizations had already occurred, yet this historical nuance often gets ignored in discussions about religious violence.

That said, the book applies the same methodology across all categories. For instance:

The Christian body count includes violence by colonialists, the Spanish Inquisition, and even Nazi Germany.

The Antitheist category encompasses the mass killings by Communist regimes like Stalin's USSR and Mao's China, which top the chart.

Indigenous and primal groups’ tolls are also accounted for where evidence allows.

In this light, while the methodology is consistent, the double standards in public perception are glaring. Why is Islam disproportionately blamed when historical data shows much larger atrocities committed under other banners?

This data starkly contrasts the pervasive narrative that links Islam uniquely to violence. Muslims are often the victims of the same extremist violence attributed to them. Consider how ISIS and similar groups primarily target Muslim communities.

By focusing disproportionately on Islam, we ignore other significant sources of violence in history and today. This myopic view perpetuates harmful stereotypes and distracts from more nuanced discussions about the complexities of power, ideology, and human conflict.

It’s time to break free from these simplistic narratives. Violence is not exclusive to any one religion or ideology—it arises from individuals and systems, often betraying the core values of the faiths or philosophies they claim to represent.

Create a family culture of praying with your family whenever the opportunity to pray together is available

Family values are slowly disappearing in the society and most of the problem of muslims is mainly societal which also suffers from this disease. A lot of youth neither listens to the elders nor elders are able to guide them because they themselves don't possess the values of a proper guardian. Consequently they start facing problems when the kids reaches adult age and gets into drugs/smoking.

Lack of family values also reflect in their life after they get married and none of the family member know their boundaries, specially the MIL/FIL.

We can begin slowly with each step at a time, starting from prayers which will create a spiritual bond among the family members. The family the basic unit of the, when family isn't close and family values are weak then nobody thinks once before abandoning the family and the community. Family members will mourn when it happens specially in case of interfaith marriages, there we end up blaming the doer but the family is actually more responsible for it because if they wanted their kids to be loyal to the community and the family, what did they do for it? Did they check if their child prays or not? Did they check do they value their family? Did they check whether the family is even worth much in their life? At the end of the day religion is not a wall which you can raise anywhere to hide your failure. Why would they marry within the community of it has no values for them? Failure of the guardians is not going to be covered up by the veil of religion in any case.

Big shot dynasties aren't created with peculiar values and customs, it needs dedication and work. May we grow further in our lives and improve whole as a community and a country.

We can't keep blaming others for all our problems. Before cleaning the colony, we must clean our houses first or the dust from the colony will again enter our homes and pollute it.

Any good/wholesome experiences with Non-Muslims?

I'm from south India. Many, if not, most of my close friends are Non-Muslims. Alhamdulillah my relationship with them are really good. They have always treated me with respect. They care about my beliefs and make sure to always be aware of my lifestyle choices. When we go out, they make sure we get halal food, even stop at a mosque for my prayer as well. As much as we speak against the islamophobes, we need to appreciate the good people too. In another Islamic sub, there were people posting on there that it's haram to have Non Muslim friends. Reading that made me feel really bad honestly. Some people just need to understand that there are fantastic people out there who happen to be Non Muslims. I'd like to hear others experience about having good Non Muslim friends.

Up all night to preserve a dying Ramadhan tradition, 2016

Brought tears to my eyes, a most beautiful tradition Amma used to tell me about as well, the elders from her childhood used the phrase, Jaagtay raho!

May Allah ta’ala grant them all a most beautiful reward for their service in His way, inshallah.

The worrying direction South Asia is going in

These past few weeks have seen a spate of communal incidents across India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Obviously in India we have had Sambhal incident, Himachal video against Muslim businessmen and regular hate speech

In Bangladesh there is still targeting of Hindus and backlash against Hindus uniting for protection and getting lathi charged, having being called terrorists and foreign agents

In Pakistan we had 82 killed in three days of sectarian violence

The past was not perfect but the fact is South Asia has become more communal over time not less. We are only region where Jews never got persecuted (in India at least), lacked sectarianism and had high levels of religious freedom and coexistence (compared to Europe and Middle East around decline of the Ottomans).

What I see changed now is the loss of accountability. When Hindus instigate an incident they will deflect attention to what happens in Pakistan or incidents 100 years ago. When Muslims hurt minorities they will say “this is not true Islam” or deflect blame to something else rather than accepting extremism exists.

Our countries crack down on extremist organisations but nurture those of the dominant religion (Bajrang Dal, Gau Raksha, Hefazat-E-Islam BD, Tehreek-E-Labbaik). Thats because the governments will never admit that they secretly want these majority orgs to exist to keep minorities in their place. The only good minority is a weak minority. When minorities organise they become seen as destabilising so need to be broken up with police action and cases.

Rather than minorities being celebrations of diversity of the nation they’re viewed as an inconvenience. We are more offended by minorities organising for their rights than the crimes they experience. Such an attitude could only exist if there was an underlying desire for these minorities to vanish one day. Thats why people in our region are happy for them to undergo slow death and marginalisation. Inaction is also a reflection of priorities, sometimes more than action itself.

Im writing this post because after viewing common threads of violence across our nations I realise this is what people actually want. We can pretend this is because of BJP or conspiracies by Awami League or “not true Islam” or “Muslim appeasement” but these are just excuses to cover up the majority in whatever countries does not want to share the same space as certain minorities. It is a cultural aspect we need to work on and will not change through electoral or political processes. What happens in politics is a spillover of the attitudes of common people.

How to comfort someone

Excerpt from Ibrahim Dewla’s speeches and notes.

We need to understand this.
(a) Allah is ‘Al-Qadir’, the All-Powerful. Allah’s power prevails over everything.
(b) Allah is ‘Al-Hakeem’, the All-Wise. Allah possesses great attributes. Allah knows the virtues behind His decrees and the results they lead to.

Thus, it’s not solely power. Allah’s power is manifested per His wisdom. If a person only focuses on Allah’s power, then he/she will wonder if Allah possesses great power but is not assisting me.

Sometimes Allah’s wisdom requires that a human being’s wish is not fulfilled. And it’s being delayed. One keeps supplicating. One thinks to himself why is this happening to me?

People abandon good deeds due to despair. At that time, they need someone to comfort them.

What should be done? They should be comforted. ‘This person is losing hope. This is a person of good qualities. Otherwise, their potential will be wasted’. Someone should console, and guide them. Someone should cheer and encourage them.

‘Do not fear. Allah has decreed a time for everything. For example, a time decreed for someone to be born, a time decreed for someone to die. Similarly, Allah has decreed a time for the good results of one’s actions. Don’t despair. There is no deficiency in Allah’s treasures’.

Why has something been withheld? In its deprivation, there is Allah’s wisdom. Rather if it was given without wisdom it would be detrimental. When Allah’s wisdom permits, it will be granted. If withheld, in return Allah will grant me something better.

People who know Allah never despair of Him. They never have an ill opinion of Him.

Thus, people of faith hold sight of not only Allah’s power but wisdom as well.
