In recognizing that Heathenry has diversified away from Ásatrú, this space has been given over to explore and comprehensively develop modern Heathenry and its relevant aspects.

A subreddit to discuss the reconstructed religions of the Germanic tribes. See our Mission Statement for more information.

r/Heathenry and the discord server Skíðblaðnir have officially joined together for chatting in real time with other Heathens. Be aware of a small rules variance between this subreddit and the channel.

Confused how to begin? Don't be afraid to post! However, The Longship is an excellent primer and website for new and beginning Heathens or curious onlookers to read up on.

Rules for r/heathenry

Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1) No ad hominem attacks.

Attack the idea, not the person directly. Those who continually break this rule will be banned.

2) No racism or bigotry.

This is a zero tolerance policy. Using racialist, sexist, homophobic language, imagery, etc. will be met with a ban. Please note that the moderators of this subreddit see "folkishness" as racism; therefore, associated rhetoric will not be tolerated.

3) No atheist or misotheist rhetoric.

Statements mocking theists, espousing archetypalism, or expressing outright hostility toward the Gods will not be tolerated. Atheist proselytization and proselytization of other faiths will not be tolerated. This is a religious space with a belief in the divine and those who violate this rule will face a potential ban/post removal at the discretion of the modstaff.

Atheists and so-called Atheistic Heathens will not be given a voice on this forum. Full stop.

4) No memes or off-topic posts.

Unless the image is sincerely educational (e.g. not a picture of a hammer, a character from Skyrim, or tattoos), it will be removed.
Topics with no clear link to Heathenry will be removed as spam.

5) No politics or politicking.

Unless it is somehow related to Heathenry, this subreddit is not the space for modern political ideology. An appropriate example of political discussion related to Heathenry is an update on Open Halls' progress obtaining military recognition for Heathenry. However, if you feel the need to talk about immigration or the Folkish/Universalist dichotomy, you will be warned and banned.

6) Reputation and associations matter.

If you are seen in another subreddit or in your post history spouting rhetoric in violation of our rules, you will be removed. If you have a poor reputation re: the rules, or the associations you keep, you may be removed.

7) Do not block moderators.

If you block us, we can't see what you're doing and therefore can't do our job. You will be asked to unblock, and if you refuse, you will be removed.

8) No Spam.

Posts shared across multiple subreddits will be deleted. Repeat offenders will be banned

9) No sharing media without context.

If you want to share content (blogs, YouTube, art, etc.), include how this relates to your praxis or how it will be of interest to the broader Heathen community. Media posts without context will be deleted, and repeat offenders banned.

Centralization. Praxis vs Knowledge.

There was a lot of accusations that I wanted to centralize heathenry.

Well.

I do.

But not praxis.

I don’t give a Freya’s sacred boar shit what you believe or do.

Rather, knowledge of practical means of how the world works.

Like in my example that started all of this. How do we ensure that heathens can see their gothis or other spiritual support during times of medical crisis? Or how does a kindred get a 501c3? Or any number of other things involving knowable, communicable situations.

We should be centralizing everything that should be centralized. Practical things. Like how do we do stuff in this world.

We should not centralize what anyone believes or does outside of harm.

If this is controversial then a serious revolution of the mind needs to take place in heathenry. I refuse to leave my calling. I will make something for myself if I have to.

The Centrist Heathen: New Blog Series on Scholarly Reconstructed Heathenry

Hey Heathens!

I recently launched a new blog, The Centrist Heathen, to discuss my approach to scholarly Reconstruction, and thought I would share it here for those who may be interested! I have a blog series planned called the Middelweg Project (Middle Path) where I tackle all the various Heathen concepts from an academic angle, but also how there's room on top of the solid reconstructed foundation for layering in individual experience and methods to fill in the blanks.

My first post, World Rejecting v. World Accepting is up! Feel free to comment here, directly on the blog post, or check out the discussion on one of the socials I link on the homepage.

Curious why I chose to name the blog The Centrist Heathen? It's not what you may be thinking...

Thanks for giving it a look!

2024-2025 Heathen Lunisolar Calendar

I got this done way later that I intended to, but here it is. This is the 5th year of doing this and probably the first year that I didn't have any major changes. Most details are on the first page, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

If you prefer to celebrate on the solstices and equinoxes or prefer different moon names, you can always edit it in a PDF editor before printing.

Dream of Odin

In my dream, I was in my old Christian Church. The service was going as normal, everyone around me singing along to the songs of the worship band, and I myself was just sitting there in silence. I got up from my chair and walked to the back exit of the building. When I walked through the door, I found myself in a bay at basic training for the Army. In front of me was a Drill Sergeant. He turned around and looked at me, as if looking into my soul. He had a harsh look about him, as one who had seen much war, but specifically I noticed that he was missing on of his eyes. Scars covered the closed eyelid of the eye that was missing. We stood there in silence staring at each other, and I will never forget the intensity in his gaze as he looked at me. I then woke up.

What could this mean? Was there something he wanted to tell me? Or was he just simply showing me that his eye is on me? Anything would help. Thank you in advance.

How I think I lost my Fylgja

So about Fylgja. A two decades ago I was in a bad mood and I didn't want to talk to anyone. so at my grandparents I ran upstairs to be alone, typical teen stuff. I felt something sitting heavily on the side of my bed. This entity would be there every time I was alone and has been hanging around me any time I can remember.

I knew fully well that the entity was putting weight on my bed but this was before I knew what either Daimon or Fylgja were and I really wanted to be alone so I kicked it away and fell asleep. Then in a dream I saw this young woman in roman attire with gold in her hair. She screamed at me and chocked me and I woke up gasping for air.

I instantly knew this meant she was probably family so I immediately apologized for being a asshole. But now I am think I scared away my personal Fylgja or at least pissed off my family Daimon. Its been two decades since she appeared at my bed and so now I'm worried I pissed of someone who I actually want around now.

Since Fylgja can go be there for other people and actually leave.

Would an offering for Freyr help with hair loss?

i understand that the title may be a bit confusing, but for a bit of context:

  • one of my friends mentioned to me that he was going for a doctors appointment to do with hair loss etc blah blah
  • i jokingly remarked to him that maybe i should’ve got him a Freyr idol (or whatever it’s called) since i was in Sweden recently visiting the viking archeological museum in Stockholm

but this made me think, firstly, i wonder if that would have helped if id actually bought him it - most likely not lol

but secondly, as Freyr is associated with fertility, would this apply? perhaps i could give an offering in exchange for aiding my friend in his “endeavours” to regain his hair?

Wolf the Red is a problem

Hi all. I got into a weird fight with Wolf the Red on r/NorsePaganism for asking about what can we do to improve things so people can be visited in hospital by their clergy.

This turned into a fight about him and his bonafides as a gothi and it got real strange real quick. So much so I had to talk to my therapist about it. My therapist pointed out that’s kind of leadership to expect when someone’s ego is at the wheel.

Which got me thinking about his power and influence in our community. I got this screen shot from the Hold later talking about it with someone and they pointed out there’s some weird power dynamics at play here in general.

This cannot continue as the status quo in heathenry. Some dipshit from Georgia shouldn’t be dictating what is and isn’t valid heathenry. Implying that the Hold is the only valid place to learn heathenry is some sort of weird power control scheme too. Of course you can learn about this path from others. That’s how I did it and how a lot of other people did too. How do they expect other people to learn something as intricate and complex as a religion based on YouTube and discord? This isn’t a fandom, this is faith.

I apologize for bringing my drama here but, uh, this cannot continue.

As a Danish student, I would like to know more about paganism in the US

I'm new to this subreddit, and Reddit in general, but since I have no real connections to groups of people outside of Denmark, I chose to investigate Reddit for answers. I would DEEPLY appreciate, if you would help me collect data on this topic, by filling out the questionnaire I have created. This has also been posted on another subreddit, so if you have already seen this survey elsewhere, don't mind this :)

Please follow the link: Survey: Paganism in the US

My aim is to cover the factors of becoming pagan and especially heathen in a country outside of the Nordic countries, as the direct link with the Viking Age and Nordic Mythology is ruled out as the main factor.

With the data I manage to pull from the survey, I will do different analyses, by comparing the answers. With those, I can hopefully draw interesting conclusions. These will be compared to existing literature on the topic, to hopefully shed light on underrepresented perspectives and increase my personal understanding.

The survey is directly intended for the writing and passing of my exam, but is also - in a wider perspective - intended for the increased knowledge of worldview and motives of Pagan individuals and societies around the world. The course at my university focuses specifically on heathenry in Denmark, but my personal scope with the survey is much wider.

The survey is not directly intended for anyone else than myself, as I am conducting it as part of my exam (however, it may be accessible for other students through my University magazine, if the results were to be published. In that way, the survey is intended for students from Religious Science at Aarhus University, Denmark).

If you have any comments, please reach out. It is a very short survey, so you really don't have to spend more than a few minutes on this - but if you feel like going into details, there's room for elaboration while answering the survey. Besides this, you can state your name and/or email at the end, if you wish to participate even further. Most importantly; every single one of you to complete the survey are helping a great deal in my process of writing my exam in December - thanks!

Contact information for the survey conductor:

Name: Tue Nordahl Ælmholdt - Mail: 202207745@post.au.dk

Asatru/Germanic Faith had the concept of Blashpemy?

Context, i was watching a top of "worst fantasy films" and i find a malasyian film called "vikingdom" in what a group of nordic and asian protagonist of middle age try to stop Thor and Tyr of destroy midgard in vengance of humans "betray and abandond them", when i read the plot i think was very stupid and blasphemous for a germanic believer, so i wanted ask you if Asatru had something similar to "Blasphemy" or "Hybris"?

Call for streamers for Glad Yule Games!

Hello All,

On Saturday, December 28th, I'm going to be hosting a Child's Play charity stream for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as a Yuletide celebration. Currently, the plan is to rent a Valheim server and let people in to play along with the stream and join in voice via Discord, moderated of course. The planned time is 9AM to 9PM Eastern time. I want to reach out and see if anyone is up for joining me in handling stream hosting duties.

If I can get volunteers, we can split up the work into segments and keep things going, possibly longer than just 12 hours. In addition to Valheim, I want to take breaks and play games like Among Us, the various games of the Jackbox Party Packs among others. In addition to streamers, I'm also looking for anyone willing to be a channel and discord moderator to help keep the grith.

Thanks all, hope to see you all there!

(I've crossposted this from r/NorsePaganism, a previous post here listed the date as December 23rd, which was ... not even a Saturday. I don't know how I got that wrong lmao. Correct day is December 28th.)

How attaching kinship to land can help biodiversity -Nordic Animism's Rune Rasmussen

"Rune is a Danish Historian of Religion. He uses current anthropology to outline how white people can draw inspiration from indigenous thinking to understand themselves and navigate environmental collapse in non-exploitative ways. Looking at parts of European heritage with fresh eyes, people can find the wisdom of nature within their own cultures. This will guide large populations towards less destructive ways of relating to the world around them. Rune has lived and worked in many cultures, and he tries to bring their perspective to his home in Scandinavia. Thinking of Nordic culture in the same way as an Amazonian healer or a vodou priestess understand theirs opens perspectives to cultural renewal. Is wheat the only acceptable material for a Julbock?

I want to make my own this year, but in the spirit of the ADHD mind, i forgot to plan ahead and find wheat stalks. I could potentially get long grass that is dried but would that be acceptable as well?

What numerical significance is there behind the “Six” Weeks until Yule?

I’d think that numbers like 9, 8, or 4 might be more inclined towards Heathen observances.

New to all this . [Norse]

Hello, so backstory kind of.
I'm a 17 year old Scandinavian whos always been interested in norse mythology & heathenry.
Always had some sort of belief in the norse gods.
I have been starting to research alot more about the different gods, im gonna be worshipping the norse gods as a hole, but i wanna focus on Frigg, Hel, Njord, Eir, Mani.

Do you have any tips?
I've grown up reading childrens books on norse mythology and in my later years ive been listening to stories and audio books about norse mythology, and ive always had a interest and belief in all this despite nearly my whole family being Christians.

Many of my reasons for wanting to focus on these are both as a way of healing, pure interests, and also it makes sense in my head that i would focus on Njord aswell since i am dreaming of becoming a sailor, and already spending alot of my time on wooden ships (and when season, on the sea) due to my 'school' program.

I do not expect to gain anything right away if ever, however it would of course still be nice. But it is majorly out of belief and interests / love for them.

Afraid of failing Óðinn

Sorry if this is confusing or convoluted, I’m having a hard time articulating it clearly.

I’m concerned that I am running out of time to earn a place in Valhalla. I can’t pretend to speak for Óðinn or know what he thinks. I feel that at one time I did earn the right to call myself a warrior. I served as a Corrections Officer for almost four years and did see combat during that time. I dedicated my fights and training to the Allfather. Before going into a ‘critical incident’ I dedicated either my victory or death to him.

I do private security now, and though my current contract is safe and there is much less combat, I still train and stay capable. I’m in line to become the Defensive Tactics instructor, and I will also dedicate that training and the knowledge I pass on to other officers to Óðinn.

I was in the Army for a short while, discharged with an injury from training. I did not deploy. I was offered a private military contract in Afghanistan, and accepted it, but circumstances caused me to lose that opportunity. I signed up for Ukraine, filled out the paperwork, and again the opportunity was taken.

The only thing in this life that scares me is the possibility of failing my ancestors and Óðinn. The idea of a peaceful death terrifies me. I want to earn a good death, like my ancestors and my brothers, and I want to be remembered as a good man. I feel like I am running out of time. I don’t want to feel like the Norns or anyone else keep taking these opportunities away because they feel I am undeserving. It may be that I am undeserving, because I feel I may have broken an oath.

I don’t mean to disrespect any of the gods. I know I should make more offerings and stop apologizing to them for all my shortcomings. I do want to improve myself as a warrior and as a man. I know I will go wherever I am meant to when the time comes, and they know what I deserve better than I do.

I don’t know if I want words of reassurance or advice, but this is the only place I know I can ask people who share our culture and beliefs. Any of either would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

We're All Driftwood

We’re All Driftwood

---

The Allfather and his brothers made mankind from driftwood,
And like driftwood you are made.
Driftwood is not called so by that name until it reaches the shore,
Where it sleeps sandy until found, and even then, it is only called so by human-kin.
Likewise, your parents plucked you from the ocean of the womb,
And named you your first name.

But the driftwood existed long before it was plucked at the shore,
It had traveled unknowable miles and unknowable years,
Ever-fore had lived as a tree for unknowable years in an unknowable place.
Orlæg teaches us thusly, and thusly more,
That the tree that grew your driftwood may have grown far from the lands human-kin have named Norse,
But the ocean of Wyrd leads to all shores, as all trees grow from Yggdrasil and drink from that one Well.

So heed not, young Heathen, the origins of your driftwood, neither is it your matter to mind what human-kin name so-and-so country nor such-and-such race.
Heed not, young Heathen, the name you were given at birth, for the Æsir and the Vættir have named you many times before and will do so ever-hence.
Heed not, young Heathen, that birth-wrought gender, for our gods take the form that suits their needs, and so too you have the right, and all mortals have need of truth and love.
And betray not our Norns, young Heathen, by mis-threading that gender you were meant or wont to love,
As for you, honorable one, who loves truthfully, our Valkyries raise their shields to yours.

Thus fear not, young Heathen,
For through the heart of that warlock, who slanders his line with words contrary,
Do assert our Valkyries their spears, painted ever-fore by the thin blood of speakers of such folkist-filth.

Truly, you need no welcome here,
For the mothers of Heimdall have already brought your driftwood to Æsir-shore,
As likewise you breathe the Allfather’s breath-gift,
But as is mortals’ role in such things,
All Wyrd-bound Heathens welcome you none-the-less.

Would it make sense for me to include Nehalennia in my Hearth Cult, if I don't live near the sea?

It's kind of a silly question, but I feel drawn to Her.

Edit: Thank you, everyone. I've decided to include Her.

Is Neo-Heathenism allowed?

So... I reached out very broadly recently and had Gods that, to my knowledge, haven't been previously named (or at gone by these names), reach out.

If it is allowed I can edit this post to elaborate on the ones I know the names of. They said it was fine.

Question about Helheim and Valhalla

I am relatively new to Heathenry. Almost half a year now. I don’t live the life of a warrior, not someone who’d be welcomed into the hall of honored dead. I know that Helheim is where those who die of old age go, but people also call it a place of torment.

If you don’t live the life of a warrior, are you doomed to suffer eternally for things outside your control?

I need to know, I want to know…
