Any advice on finding aircraft storage for rent?

Hello folks.

In the planning stage of potentially purchasing an aircraft.

I thought budgeting for storage would be the hardest part, but turns out finding it is!

I live in Canada and most classified ads I could find are for purchasing entire hangars for 250k+

How do you find hangars for rent?

CFII login time

Hey everyone,

Just a question after some info I encountered, I did some questions for the Instrument Rating on King Schools and it says CFII can only log in instrument time if flying in IMC. My question is, I know that students in the instrument rating/CPL can write those hours as PIC. but wouldn't flying in IMC means they are no longer the PIC as they are not allowed to fly in such conditions and that would become dual received?

Help! Aviation noob here

Hey guys! I’m a junior in high school and know nothing about flying. I’ve always been fascinated in airplanes since I was little. So, I’m looking into a career of aviation. However, I am not an American citizen. Would there be any complications around that? I am a resident of Michigan and has been living in the country for over 9 years. So, what does it take to become an airplane pilot and make a career out of it as a non-citizen? Is it even possible? Do I need to go to flight school or college? What should I do in my senior year to prepare for a career in aviation? In general I would just love to know more about the aviation industry and thanks a lot for your help!

How to avoid rocking side to side after touchdown?

I'm a fresh student pilot with about 20 flight hours in an Aquila A210. One thing that sometimes seems to happen to me is that after touchdown, the plane slightly swerves to one side (I can feel it in the rudder pedals, too), which I instinctively try to compensate, but end up overcompensating and rocking the plane side to side instead - which is really not good.

I would like to know why this happens and how to avoid it, or react in case it does happen.

A theory I have is that I am already applying rudder input on short final to line the nose up with the runway, which from my understanding will also angle the nose wheel. Upon touchdown, that's where the plan will want to roll on the ground. Could this be the reason?

How do I fix this, pls?

Regulatory in nature (aviation)

(FDC NOTAMS)- I know y’all got my back, what does it mean when the oral instrument book says “Flight information that is regulatory in nature including, but not limited to, changes to IFR charts, procedures, and airspace usage.

How important is the social aspect of GA for you?

Fly-in’s, pancake breakfasts, flying cubs, airshows… Even just meeting fellow pilots for a beer around the hangar or coffee in the FBO. How much do you take part in (non-online) social aspects of GA? I get the feeling this was a big part of flying culture in past decades but is slowing dying out now.

Single/Multi instrument clarification

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to clarify something regarding the FAA instrument rating - if one is passing an instrument rating checkride on a C172, does that limit them to fly a single engine IFR or can they also fly multi engine in IFR? I'm referring to FAA licenses only (I know other countries limit to, but not sure regarding the US)

After sitting how long would you inspect an engine?

Recently met with my instructor and a few other guys about starting a club. The plan would be non-equity membership and he and another guy lease their planes to the club.

I’ve almost exclusively flown my instructor’s plane, PA28-181, which is right about OH time and has basically flown once a day for 6 years straight. That one I’m not worried about.

The other guy’s plane is a C-172, 6cyl 140hp, ~600lbs useful load (didn’t think to ask the exact model year and designation, maybe someone can help me out). Guy said it’s flown 3 hours since August 2023, and sounds like it had quite big gaps between flying before then.

I’ve read about corrosion occurring with situations like this, especially if the engine has been just run up every once in a while for a few mins and that that is actually worse than just sitting (I don’t know if he’s done that or not, just stating my research). Should I bring up getting the engine inspected?

Picacho Peak, Arizona

I flew over it at 7,500 this weekend. This peak isn’t much of a big deal to look at if you didn’t grow up in Arizona. But it’s one of those landmarks that sticks with ya if you did grow up here: driving home from Phoenix to Tucson it’s a sign that you’re almost home. There’s a huge ostrich petting zoo by it. The Civil War’s western-most battle was allegedly fought there. It’s just a cool mountain and I love flying by it.

Asking for opinions for a new graduate

My question is what position within the aviation industry are the most lucrative. My background consists of having a B.B.A in Operations Management, work experience at the airport, sales internship and a ASEL/AMEL and CFII. For me what comes to mind is either aviation tech sales or a captain at a legacy carrier.

please share your opinions and background!

Issue w/G5 Powering On

I have this issue intermittently where my bottom G5 HSI will not power on with the avionics. If I hold the power button down long enough, it will eventually power on and operate normally. Anyone see this before and/or know what causes this to happen?

What are the best resources to find a hangar in my area?

I am thinking about buying a plane but am now trying to find hangar space for it. Are there any resources other than just calling around to different airports in my area?

A Low Flying Aircraft (Report or Not To Report)

So I'm coming here because I'd like some input from actual pilots and people part of the General Aviation community. I am, at most, a personal enthusiast who would love to get my PPL one day but currently am not part of this community in an official way.

My parents live next to a lake. It's a quiet lake in a rural area. The only recreation that really happens on it is fishing and cruising around in a pontoon boat (which is what my parents do). On one such cruise a Cessna 182 came flying down over the lake. It was low, maybe like 50-100 ft off the lake's surface, definitely below the tree line. My dad took pictures and sent them to me as we both share a personal interest in aviation. They were in their boat and this low flying aircraft passed easily within 500 feet horiztonal distance of them. It's not the first time my dad has noticed a low flying aircraft flying over their lake but it's the first time he got a picture and the first time he was on his boat when it went by.

The aircraft came down from the far end of the lake, low and slow. In the pictures my dad took, it appears to be at full flaps. My dad was concerned they were having an issue (or were perhaps, drug runners) but they proceeded to pass them, fly into a channel that cuts into the lake, still below the tree line, before accelerating and climbing out to a more reasonable altitude seeming to preclude both the former theories of either having issues or avoiding radar.

I looked up the regulations. If the lake (and channel) is considered "open water" then my understanding is there isn't a direct altitude restriction but they would have to keep at least 500 feet from vessels, people, and structures. They definitely came closer than 500 feet from my parents on their boat. Not to mention that not far down that channel they were flying (whether the pilot knew it or not) is a RC airfield. I don't know if anyone was flying an RC aircraft at the time.

The pictures my dad took clearly show the tail number for an aircraft that is registered in a nearby county and shows several landmarks that can be used to approximate their altitude and distance from my dad's boat. The regulation is clear but I wanted to know what actual pilots thought on the matter. While breaking regulation, based on my dad's description and his photos, it seems that while they didn't keep the proper distance from my dad's boat, they were not flying erratically and they intentionally avoided flying directly over the vessel in their direction of travel.

Looking for some opinions. Is this unsafe, against regulation, and should be reported to the FAA in the interest of maintaining a strict safety culture, or was this just a pilot that wasn't really hurting anyone and, while breaking regulation, was still considering the spirit of those regulations when it comes to putting others in danger?

Edit: Some people questioned the 200ft distance. I reevaluated the pictures my dad showed me and determined it is unlikely they were within 200ft but were almost certainly somewhere within 500ft.

Update: Given the input so far and furthur deliberating I've decided there doesn't seem sufficient reason to report. For all intents and purposes the pilot seemed to deliberately give berth to the boat in front of them and was not flying eradictly nor did my parents seem as though they were ever concerned for their own safety. While there was some questionble risk to what they were doing in general, it seemed most of the reasonable risk was to the aircraft alone.

A&P mechanic exams

Has anyone recently taken the exam for A&P in 2024? What did they use to study and help pass the exam? I was told the ASA Prepware was all i need to pass the exam because the test question is very identical to the Prepware program. Is that still the case in 2024?

Emergencies or abnormalities when flying

Hey everyone I’m a student pilot who’s currently in the process of time building for my CPL. Recently I had a throttle cable snap on me during a flight. Was able to fall back to my training and safely land. But it definitely got me thinking about how things can happen and that I should be aware of abnormal events.

I figured this would be the place to ask around and see what other pilots do to stay safe and what kind of emergencies or abnormal events everyone’s experienced in their flying careers. It would also be interesting to understand what everyone’s opinions on the safety of general aviation is and what we as pilots can do to ensure that safety

My maintenance spreadsheet

I’m fully aware that their are apps that do this, Savvy has a program too, etc. A lot of them seem designed for multi-AC fleets etc. There’s nothing like doing something from scratch to force you to dig in. This works for me. Work in progress.

Savvy Aviation

Just a quick review of Savvy Aviation. I used them to assist with my pre-buy when I bought my plane a year ago. Presently they are assisting with my annual. They do a great job of guiding me through the process, answering my questions and negotiating with shops to get the best value for my maintenance dollars.

I also consistently upload my engine monitor data and they review and look at cylinder health, engine performance etc.

If you are like me and a new to airplane ownership, it's super nice to have these guys help guiding you through airplane maintenance. I knew next to nothing about maintaining an airplane when I first bought my 182. I've learned a lot since then thanks to experience and a lot of the articles on Savvy and my account rep. Worth the cost in my opinion.

This sub is great!

Just want to say this sub is so good. Long time lurker but just recently posted. The feedback and response had been great.

Compared to some of the other subs around aviation this one seems like an actual community of like minded people instead of the cesspool and dick measuring the other ones are.

Thanks again!

Struggling with ATC

So I recently got my PPL and I’m loving the hell out of it!

I’m currently working on building my Xcountry time for my IR. But I’m having a hard time with ATC and read backs.

I did all my training at a uncontrolled field so my experience with ATC overall is limited.

When doing the XCountry I always get flight following. For some reason I struggle with the read backs. I am able to read back all the required info but I jumble up the order. I don’t read it back in the same order they gave it to me.

Most of the Live ATC channels I listen to are is mostly IFR stuff. Where I haven’t started that training it doesn’t make sense to me what they are saying so practising those read backs I find VERY difficult since I don’t understand yet what is happening.

Does any one know of any good channels that typically have a lot of VFR traffic on them that I could listen to and practise with?

Thanks!

Breaking in a new cylinder

Coming out of annual next week with #6 cylinder replaced on a O-470R (‘68 182L). Does anyone have recommendations on what to do or what to avoid? I’ve read I should run max continuous power for at least an hour or two and avoid prolonged ground ops and low power settings.

Also any suggestions on mineral oil? I usually use Phillips X/C 20W50. Is the M version good to use?

Thank you to everyone who posts here.

I was just over in r/flying and, at a glance, it appears that half of the top posts are airline/regional/career related. I'm just an old fart who putters around in my Warrior for fun, I'm so happy for everyone who posts here. In fact it is ridiculous how excited I am to see when a new post pops up here.

Even though I did not start this sub and am not a mod, I am happy to see it growing. I've said before, I'm more interested in knowing the best place for a $100 hamburger than what airline is or is not hiring.

Keep it up, keep spreading the word about this sub.
