Welcome
Welcome to FutureWhatIf, a place to discuss all the possibilities that the future may hold.
Basic Rules & Suggestions
Keep it realistic and somewhat serious. A scenario about the possibility of Obama raising the income tax rate to 75% in 2016 is good. A scenario about Obama revealing himself to be a powerful warlock in 2016 is not.
Give context. You have an entire self post outside of the title to explain your question. Feel free to put your answer in there if you'd like! However better background creates a better question, and if you don't leave any background....
Take liberty in answering the question! If OP didn't give enough context in their question, make up your own. The sub is based around quality answers, take liberty in the process of creating them.
No joke or short, non-engaging comments. A joke inside an answer is fine, but address OP's question and engage in conversation.
Civility and politeness are still rules. Don't correct bad spelling and/or grammar. Don't attack a person's politics and don't exalt your own. Please try and refrain from telling OP their scenario is impossible. If you do, at the least give a good explanation why. Report bad behavior to a mod if you see it.
Start your posts with a [FWI] tag or 'What If'. We don't want this subreddit to cause heart trauma to users who forgot they were subscribed.
Adding a date to the explanation is recommended. By default, questions without a date are assumed to start one month from the date posted.
The rules are currently subject to change as the demands of the community evolve.

[FWI] British politician: "Young unemployed men under the age of 45 who begin drawing unemployment from the government should be conscripted and sent abroad to war - and this includes black men, because no Brit gets preferential treatment."
She goes on to say, "See? Even hawks like JD Vance who married an Indian American woman, want India too!"
In the year 2028, Mexico undergoes a period of social and political unrest that is worsened when someone who has a personality like that of Donald Trump (Basically Donald Trump’s Mexican counterpart) but has views similar to Russian Ultranationalist Imran Zakhaev from OG Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2007) and Diego Almagro (He’s from Call of Duty: Ghosts) runs for office.
Through a series of inexplicable events, the hypothetical successor to Mexico’s current President Claudia Sheinbaum wins the next election (this would be 2030) and effectively executes Mexico’s version of Project 2025.
Under this hypothetical successor, Mexico becomes a totalitarian dictatorship with elements of ultranationalism and fascism. I imagine this individual being VERY anti-American too and he or she orders the arrest and/or execution of US citizens in Mexico and expels US ambassadors to the country.
How ****ed is America now that its southern neighbor is an anti-American extremist? Does America go to war against Mexico over its hostile actions against US citizens?
PS: This FWI is irrelevant to whether Trump or Harris wins the US Presidential election of 2024.
This is a FWI that expands on a previous FWI by u/ThinkTankDad.
His FWI reads: As an unfortunate result of mistaken identity, North Korean forces are unable to discern Ukraine soldiers from Russian troops.
The results are deadliest in the trenches where PTSD'd North Koreans mow down bunkers full of Russian officers mistaken to be speaking Ukrainian.
My FWI builds on this scenario, except let us imagine that Kim Jong-Un learns of these incidents over the course of the holiday season, 2024 and into January of 2025, courtesy of a very pissed off Vladimir Putin.
For this FWI, we will imagine that Putin angrily demands an explanation out of Kim Jong-Un. I imagine him doing two things here:
If either reaction seems out of character for Putin in your opinion, what else could Russia do to retaliate against North Korea for firing on Russian forces under the paranoid belief that they are Ukrainian?
How might Kim Jong-Un deal with these incidents, other than retaliating by ordering the families of the perpetrators imprisoned or executed?
The results are deadliest in the trenches where PTSD'd North Koreans mow down bunkers full of Russian officers mistaken to be speaking Ukrainian.
A year from now, French President Emmanuel Macron has a religious experience that leads to him converting to Christian Nationalism and with it, the teachings of Christian Reconstructionism, Theonomy and Dominion Theology. He also pledges to abolish abortion nationwide (and u/Abolitionist-TRuss rejoices)! He also leaves the liberal political party known as Renaissance.
What happens to France now?
[FWI] British politician: "HMRC (IRS equivalent) knows how much tax you pay. Males over the age of 18 living in England and Wales who don't pay any taxes and are poorly employed should be sent to extermination camps like Auschwitz or the gas chamber to die."
Nine months from the creation of this post, South Korea suddenly announces that it is authorizing the military deployment of military forces to Ukraine in order to assist Ukrainian forces in fighting off Russian soldiers and their North Korean mercenary collaborators. The South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol condemns the North Korean military deployment as "unacceptable" and "aiding and abetting in an illegal takeover", and so authorizes the military deployment of ROKA forces to even the playing field regarding Ukraine and to spite Kim Jong Un. By 2025, we see ROKA forces actively fighting the Russians and North Korean military forces alongside Ukraine. I imagine them assisting Ukraine in recapturing any territory in Kursk Oblast that has fallen to the Russians and/or North Koreans.
How would the rest of the world react to this revelation? Would Kim Jong-Un blow his top upon learning of this?
[FWI] News breaks around the world in the early hours of the morning (30 October) that the crew of two Croatian coastguard vessels "witnessed meteor strikes in the Adriatic Sea", as it appears a "major event" ccurred; but nobody appears to have been hurt; the strikes caused "some waves" but nothing significant and all crew are said to be "fine" and accounted for.
In a shocking twist just days before the election, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe vanishes after his controversial joke about Puerto Ricans that instantly went viral for all the wrong reasons. The punchline, dark and inflammatory, had drawn waves of backlash online, with some calling it “hateful” and demanding accountability. Three days before the election, when Tony disappears without explanation, the internet erupts with conspiracy theories suggesting foul play.
The public instantly speculates that Tony's disappearance is part of a sinister plot from Trump allies to have him silenced or even killed. Others suggest he is just hiding and laying low in order to brush off. Online, the #JusticeForTony movement clashes with calls for proper investigations into his whereabouts. Pagesix and TMZ search high and low.
Viral videos soon appear with tales of a secret "cleanup" crew inside the Trump campaign, hinting at a politically motivated murder plot and Trump's own ties to the mob are revealed...

According to Sections 1-2 of Missouri Senate Joint Resolution Number 33, “All elective executive officials of the state, and judges of the 2 supreme court, courts of appeals and circuit courts shall be liable to impeachment for [crimes, misconduct, habitual drunkenness,] bribery, willful neglect of duty, corrupt or criminal conduct in office, mental incompetency, or any offense involving moral turpitude [or oppression] in office”, and “The house of representatives shall have the sole power of impeachment. All impeachments shall be tried before the supreme court, except that the governor or a member of the supreme court shall be tried by a special commission of seven eminent jurists to be elected by the senate. The supreme court or special commission shall take an oath to try impartially the person impeached, and no person shall be convicted without the concurrence of five-sevenths of the court or special commission.
Now, you might be wondering, “Who the heck are Josh Hawley and Mike Parson?” First of all, Josh Hawley is the senior United States Senator from Missouri, a seat he has held since 2019. Mike Parson is the 57th governor of Missouri, an office he’s held since 2018 after replacing Eric Greitens. He’s a Republican.
For more information on the abortion abolitionist movement and why they oppose the pro-life position, see Abolitionist Theological Foundation, Abolitionist, Not Pro-Life, Abolitionism 101, and Equal Protection.
In a more recent context, Republican Senator Mike Moon has put forward Missouri SB356, the Abolition of Abortion in Missouri Act. This would criminalize mothers who carry out abortions, and has no exceptions for rape and incest (they do have an exception for “life of the mother”).
Now, on to the FWI: The scenario begins with a revival occurring in the state of Missouri around Christmas time. A large number of Missourians in the state government embrace Christian Nationalism and, in particular, abortion abolitionism. However, there are still hostile pro-lifers in both the Missouri Senate and House of Representatives.
Fast forward to 2025 and it’s revealed through various news sources and social media blog posts from Abolitionists Rising and other like-minded organizations that SB356 was killed by pro-life members of the health committee in Missouri, many of whom have remained hostile to the abortion abolitionist position. Senator Josh Hawley and Governor Mike Parson publicly announce their support for the health committee's decision, claiming that the abolitionists are “acting un-Christlike” and “perverting the Gospel of Jesus for everyone.”
Outraged, Mike Moon and many other like-minded abortion abolitionists in Missouri’s state government call for articles of impeachment to be introduced against Mike Parson, on the basis that they have “willful neglect of duty”, going so far as to call Hawley and Parson’s support for the opposition to SB356 “treason” (Remember, these people are Christians and they see any opposition to abortion abolitionist legislation as opposition to God Himself). Hawley also comes under fire for opposing SB356.
The loyalists of the abolitionist movement in the House of Representatives jointly file articles of impeachment against Mike Parson.
This marks the beginning of a new precedent in which the Christian Right begins to demonstrate its influence in America on the state level, and marks the first time in which a GOP member of a state government is impeached by another.
How would the Democratic population of the United States react to this new drama? Fellow GOP members?
Author's note: This was a rewrite of an earlier FWI about the Christian Right impeaching Donald Trump, which contained a lot of gross errors about how impeachment works (Special thanks to Reddit commentators for pointing this out)!
Kim Jong Un, embarrassed, force marches the entire unit through a Ukrainian minefield in order to clear the way for Russian tanks.
So here’s what happened. One day, Elon Musk woke up, looked at his calendar, and realized he had nothing big planned for the year. This was troubling because, for Elon, a "big plan" usually involves either launching a rocket, reinventing the internet, or attempting to clone himself using leftover hair from Nikola Tesla’s mustache (a very secret project).
But then, like an electric shock from a misfiring Tesla coil, it hit him: Mars. Colonies. Babies. King Elon. This would be his next plan, he decided, rubbing his hands together in a mad-scientist way that might alarm anyone who didn't work at Tesla or SpaceX and was already used to it.
The plan was simple (by Elon standards, anyway): Musk would personally select a group of women—preferably pregnant, because "it saves time," he explained in his Twitter manifesto. These women would be shot into space on the next Falcon rocket and given a one-way ticket to Mars, where they would deliver their babies, thus starting the Martian population from scratch. His Martian population. A genetically engineered civilization, sort of like Musk-approved IKEA kids.
Of course, at the press conference, people had a lot of questions. "Elon, are you claiming these children will be biologically yours?"
"Absolutely," Musk said, with the confidence of a man who has just invented the concept of parenthood. "We’ll use, um, Wi-Fi, or possibly Bluetooth. Look, the science is not the point, okay? The point is: I'm going to be the father of Mars. It's in the terms of service."
Then, without waiting for more questions, he unveiled his new title: Elon the First, King of Mars and Forefather of the Red Planet.
Predictably, the announcement caused a stir. Earthly governments scrambled to figure out if they could ban or at least heavily tax "space parenting." Social media erupted into endless debates over what exactly it means to be the King of Mars. But Elon was already six steps ahead, posting baby onesies emblazoned with "Future Martian Overlord" on the Tesla website, available in sizes ranging from Newborn to 6 Years (Mars time).
Meanwhile, the rocket, packed with Musk’s hand-picked crew of expectant mothers and exactly one crate of freeze-dried ice cream for "realism," blasted off. As it rocketed toward Mars, Elon tweeted a photo of himself wearing a cape, a crown, and a look that said, "This is perfectly normal."
Sure enough, nine months and 34 million miles later, the first-ever Space Babies were born on Mars. Musk wasted no time declaring that, by Martian law (which he made up on the spot), these babies were technically his, as he had "inspired" them. Never mind biology; he had "spiritually fathered" them through his sheer willpower. There was even talk of him teaching these kids their first words, which he hoped would be "Musk... Musk."
And thus, Musk's vision of Martian nobility began, complete with royal duties that included learning how to operate space tractors and reciting the words "I'm a Muskonaut" at every possible opportunity. Back on Earth, people were understandably confused, wondering if the whole thing was just an elaborate prank. But Elon, King of Mars, didn’t care. He was already busy planning his next big announcement: the upcoming SpaceX mission to Jupiter, where he had decided to establish Muskopia, the universe’s first floating colony.
As he put it, “When the galaxy’s your playground, who’s going to stop you?”
This seems like a no brainer after last weeks reports of North Koreans fighting in Kursk oblast.
Author’s note: I find this somewhat plausible because “Anything is possible.”
I imagine this happening around 2025 but the gist of this FWI is, there is an explosion of incidents where various Wikipedia articles on social issues are defaced and edited so that they are in alignment with the teachings of Christian Reconstructionism, Theonomy and Dominionist theology (https://www.gotquestions.org/dominion-theology.html). Upon investigation, it’s discovered that the perps are members of various organizations that espouse Christian Reconstructionism, Theonomy and Dominionist theology.
This could happen either in response to Kamala Harris winning the 2024 US Presidential election or Trump winning the 2024 US Presidential election (The winner is irrelevant to the scenario).
How would the various left or right-leaning members of the US population react to this? Who would realistically defend such people, or would the American public basically unite against these people?
I don't think it's likely that the Russian effort will collapse between now and 5 November 2024. However, there is a somewhat bigger chance it might happen between 5 November 2024 and 20 January 2025 (although by no means certain).
So in this scenario, assume that Trump wins the American election (something I personally believe will happen because The Economist says so). What if the feared demise of Ukraine resulting from a Trump Presidency is averted by Russia losing before Trump can be inaugurated? How might Trump treat a victorious Ukraine?
I'm friends with a lot of people on social media that are also members of the Christian Right. A lot of them are saying that the public school system is a bad system that corrupts children (I've seen such words like "iniquitous" and "demonic" thrown out there too, actually) and that it's the parents' job, not the state, to properly educate our children (Interestingly, a lot of them are abortion abolitionists too so there's that).
So, let's give these guys the time of day: create a challenge where the abolition of the public school system actually happens.
Your challenge must address the following:
