Welcome

Welcome to FutureWhatIf, a place to discuss all the possibilities that the future may hold.

Basic Rules & Suggestions

  1. Keep it realistic and somewhat serious. A scenario about the possibility of Obama raising the income tax rate to 75% in 2016 is good. A scenario about Obama revealing himself to be a powerful warlock in 2016 is not.

  2. Give context. You have an entire self post outside of the title to explain your question. Feel free to put your answer in there if you'd like! However better background creates a better question, and if you don't leave any background....

  3. Take liberty in answering the question! If OP didn't give enough context in their question, make up your own. The sub is based around quality answers, take liberty in the process of creating them.

  4. No joke or short, non-engaging comments. A joke inside an answer is fine, but address OP's question and engage in conversation.

  5. Civility and politeness are still rules. Don't correct bad spelling and/or grammar. Don't attack a person's politics and don't exalt your own. Please try and refrain from telling OP their scenario is impossible. If you do, at the least give a good explanation why. Report bad behavior to a mod if you see it.

  6. Start your posts with a [FWI] tag or 'What If'. We don't want this subreddit to cause heart trauma to users who forgot they were subscribed.

  7. Adding a date to the explanation is recommended. By default, questions without a date are assumed to start one month from the date posted.

The rules are currently subject to change as the demands of the community evolve.

If you see someone breaking these rules, please press the report button.

FWI: Musk is able to occupy Mars and all the billionaires are able to take refuge there from the apocalypse

Whether it’s climate change or nuclear war, the end could be near and Musk might know that, so he’s determined to occupy Mars.

Him developing DOGE is a way to fund his efforts—sucking every dollar from the average American because he doesn’t see us as sentient people, but as NPCs (supports his simulation theory) that he reaps resources from.

Occupying Mars is his version of Noah’s Ark or Darwinism at play. Only the elite 1% of the world will continue on into the next era of man, while the rest of us parish on our dying planet.

FWI: Another 9/11 kills Trump and Vance

Disclaimer: before this gets reported as a threat, please note that I am in NO WAY saying it should happen. Political violence is never okay. I’m just interested in the possibility of this happening.

Side note: inspired not just by 9/11 itself, but also by the Butler assassination attempt and the recent plane crashes (including the Washington plane crash).

So, long story short, a United Airlines flight from Baltimore to Seattle happens smoothly until a guy decides to hijack it and redirect it to Washington DC. The hijacker is a Trump opponent, and he is aiming for the White House. Eventually, the plane reaches the White House and crashes into it, killing both Donald Trump and JD Vance. Imagine what happens next, especially considering the recent context regarding air travel (if you know what I mean).

FWI: Backlash to air travel after the past few years boils over with the recent incident, leads to US adopting high speed rail

Let’s say, hypothetically, the consumer level of trust in air travel takes a further dive then ever before after the investigation made into the DC airport incident finds serious flaws within the US air travel system.

Trump and the GOP, noticing public backlash to air travel is more intense then before, declares the air line industry a “woke, DEI filled mess” (not my belief just what they’d realistically frame it as), and wanting a super sized government project to boost the economy, announces plans to build the Donald Trump National High-Speed Railway.

Is this even feasible for them to accomplish? Does the idea of Trump having an entire national travel system named after him seem fitting enough to convince him it’s worth it? Could air travel actually become the next major target of far right, MAGA social media influencers?

FWI: Widespread cultural shifts end up transforming the world into a women dominated political landscape

What if the aftermath of todays politics results in women becoming the leaders of the country and world?

Imagine if the US was led by a female potus and vp. Congress was 80% women. Female presidents all around the world, with even countries like Iran and Afghanistan liberating their women and electing them to their highest positions.

Democracy since it's inception with the greeks and romans, has almost exclusievely been led by men. Women used to be considered property of their fathers or husbands, and were not citizens with the same legal standing as men. In the US, women were not even allowed to vote until as recent as 1920, let alone making laws and serving office.

If it was normal for men to control 100% of the political sphere, then it's possible via widespread significant cultural shifts that the opposite could happen. I don't think we would ever see anything like the Futurama planet known as Amazonia where it's leader is a misandrist prejudiced against men and punishes them to death for simply visiting the planet. But I do think it's possible for a new norm to be established where almost exclusively women are chosen as elected officials.

Edit: (My question is a prompt for discussion about what this would be like, and not whether or not it could happen)

FWI: An airliner collides with a drone

Main inspiration: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Potomac_River_mid-air_collision

Approx. five months from the creation of this post, the events of the 2025 Potomac River air collision happen again, but this time you have a China Airlines Boeing 787-10 departing from JFK International Airport in NYC and flying to Beijing, China colliding with a recreational drone that was illegally flying near the airport.

The plane crashes on the runway as a result with minimal casualties.

FWI: If this weapon system existed and possessed by only one nation, how effective and one-sided it would be in every battle, every war?

The following weapon is from a novel that I wrote, I wonder how it would be used and how every war, every battle end up with its presence. This kind of post was posted in two subs and got removed, maybe it wasn't suitable. I don't know where to post so I hope posting it here is somewhat suitable since it's about a what if scenario in the future. Let's say a future not far from here, like 2030 or even earlier

Since the name of this weapon has never come to mind, I decided to put it a random name. It's alright for you to name it however you like

Information of AOCS:

Alpha Omega Control System (AOCS) is an undergrounded computer system, works independently through AI's control or human's control. Abilities of the AOCS system are various, used for various purposes, most is psychological warfare. Nothing immunes to the AOCS's effects no matter how much technology has been advanced

The AOCS is used to disable, shut down or even take control of electricity, internet, radar, military vehicles, ships, drones, aircrafts, missiles, ICBMs, WMDs, and etc. As long as the equipment and location are in the program of AOCS, they will be targeted clearly. Weapons like the WMDs, ICBMs, other missile systems, despite being controlled, cannot be used by the AOCS user side, but safety is sure secured. Both the targeted side and the user side cannot use those weapons, they're locked for purpose not to let anyone use them

The AOCS will be used to shut down or take control of the enemy's military equipment to avoid disadvantage conventional warfare of the user side. Those attacks will be used for blitzkrieg assaults, since the area that gets targeted will take affect for hours, days or weeks depends on the time set on the program. The longest time can be set on AOCS is one month. After the time ends, the system will take order to make another task, otherwise AI will take control

The AOCS doesn't have features to control something permanently for safety if errors happen, can only extend time. The user faction that launches AOCS will take the same consequences if their military equipment get in the area when the effects of the AOCS are on. It's good used for blitzkrieg, using psychological warfare by turning on, confusing the enemy before turning off for the user side to strike while the other side is panicked. The only way not to take the effects of AOCS is the user side having anti-AOCS plates attached to their military equipment to disable the what the AOCS attacks could cause to them

FWI: Newsom Becomes New President, Melania Stays First Lady?

As the optimist I assume to be, I see several options that, during Donald Trump's lifetime, someone else besides the Donald becomes president of the United States of America.

What if Melania sees the abyss her husband is creating in front of her and plans to opt out of the marriage with Donald—and to opt Donald out of the White House with some Game of Thrones-style intrigue, blinding him with his own endless horniness?

She supports Newsom as the newcomer president, succeeds, and remains the First Lady, watching Donald tumble from the Oval Office.

Wouldn't that be... Awesome? Handsome? Newsom?

FWI: There is a youth-led rebellion against the Kim regime

Context:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyongbyon_Nuclear_Scientific_Research_Center

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_North_Korea

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster

Inspirations:

  1. 1989 Tiananmen Square protests
  2. January 6, 2021 Capitol Attack
  3. Fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s Regime
  4. Chernobyl Disaster

On New Year’s Day, 2029, the people of North Korea, including a large majority of the country’s youth population, finally snap.

At the stroke of midnight, someone triggers a nuclear reactor meltdown at the Nyongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center. At the same time, we see a series of riots led by the DPRK’s youth against the Kim regime. Think the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests meet the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

Kim Jong Un is either killed during the riots or gets severe radiation poisoning, along with his sister and a large number of his followers.

What if by accident or sabotage, all of Russia nuclear arsenal is launched harmlessly into space. Even their long range missiles are gone as well.

Losing their biggest deterrent, how would the rest of the world respond?

I like to imagine countries tired of Russian interference and will ally together and to invade and remove Putin from power.

FWI: "God Bless the U.S.A." replaces "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem

You know that theme song that played during those Trump campaign rallies? I am suspicious that Traitor Trump will probably replace the national anthem with "God Bless The USA" by Lee Greenwood, for the sake of a more modern anthem. Wonder if he could do something stupid like that.

FWI: Federal workers go on strike

The federal workforce has reached its limit with Trump's RTO push and Heritage trolls funded by Elon trying to put in MAGA stooges in leadership positions. The call goes out and one day in June 2025, the entire federal civilian workforce goes on strike and announces that they will not return until Trump's worst EOs are rescinded, and the Project 2025 types are removed from any decision-making position. DC sees the largest pickets outside the White House, Congress, and the Heritage Foundation. NYC sees pickets outside major news studios and other cities are seeing pickets outside the local offices of members of Congress. Spokespeople from the striking employees go on every podcast from PSA to Joe Rogan pitching their case and social media is bombarded with stories of the strike.

Initially Trump and his cronies jump for joy because they can start firing people and installing true believers in Trump's vision. But that would mean firing every single federal employee and without them, society grinds to a screeching halt. Now everyone is telling their Representative and Senator to do something to get people back to work.

Trump decides to unleash the military and tells his new Fox News Secretary of Defense he wants blood in the streets. The new SECDEF complies, but while most troops refuse to carry out orders to shoot and kill the strikers, there are those who do and footage goes viral in a matter of minutes.

Congress convenes an emergency session and now that the shoot to kill order is made public and sympathy towards the strikers now overwhelming, even GOP members realize that it is time to end this and votes for impeaching Trump. The Senate, now more worried about the backlash that Trump's temper, votes to convict and remove. While the new President Vance is a Project 2025 believer, he is an even bigger believer in keeping his job and ditches it for the beyond toxic plan it now is. Trump's EOs are voided and strikers start coming back to work.

FWI: Republicans lose their narrow majority in the United States House of Representatives before the 2026 midterms

With the GOP having a less then 10 seat majority in the chamber, and it almost dipping to a historic low point with the resignation of some members to serve in the administration, there is a number of semi-realistic paths to a tied House or even a Democratic majority before 2026’s midterm elections occur.

Be it unexpected deaths, resignations, retirements, or offers to serve in the private sector, how would the scenario play out if Republicans simply loss enough members in the chamber and couldn’t prevent a loss of the speakership? How does it play out?

Do Democrats take the risk of trying to get Hakeem Jeffries as speaker with a new, fragile majority? Does a collation majority form out of decorum and wanting to prevent another endless amount of Speaker vote rounds like in 2023? How does that change the narrative of the race for congress in the midterms? Does Trump have enough time to get his congressional plans through the House before such a scenario could occur?

FWI: Rating Other Drivers on the Road

Ever see another driver do something really stupid or aggressive and wish there was a way to easily report them or hold them accountable?

This would be pretty simple to implement:

-Car uses a dashcam or other front mounted camera to see the car in front.

-Using android auto or carplay, the system would read the license plate of the car.

-Users would have the ability to rate the driver - thumbs up/down (tied to that license plate).

-Information would get stored to a database showing the overall ratings of that vehicle/driver.

Over time, this information could be used to penalize bad drivers. Insurance companies may raise the rates for vehicles with consistently bad ratings.

FWI: Trump offers to give one million dollars to every citizen of Greenland if they agree to join the US.

People keep talking about him trying to invade Greenland, which would obviously go terribly if it happened, and Denmark is obviously not going to just give Greenland up, either, but what happens if he does something like in the title of this post to try to give a huge incentive directly to the citizens themselves? Greenland only has 57,000 people, so giving them all a million dollars would still only be like 1% of the annual US budget. (Assume that Congress also allocates the funds to go out if enough of Greenland's citizens agree, so it appears to be a real possibility and not just an empty promise.) I'm kind of surprised that nobody seems to consider the possibility that he could try to do something like this if he was really serious about trying to get it.

FWI: In 2029, Texans advocate for independence following a Democratic victory in the 2028 elections

Inspired by some Californians who want to be a country. While an independent California obviously can’t happen due to secession being illegal in the United States, more people advocate for it to happen since Trump’s 2024 re-election, which kinda reminds us of when it happened the first time and when Texas demanded to be a country when a Democrat was president. So, in this scenario, the winner of the 2028 presidential elections is a Democrat, and Texas secessionist movements grew and became louder by the time 2029 rolls up. What happens?

FWI: China invades the DPRK

This was inspired by a comment on a previous FWI post about China turning against Russia and North Korea. It reads: “Regarding North Korea, China might wish to replace the erratic Kim family with a more compliant puppet although the level of pent-up deprivation is going to make any changes there a long term problem. Regarding Russia, China needs their natural resources. They may not be the best of friends, but with both nations having nukes, it’s to their mutual benefit to remain cordial. Russian fuel and minerals are going to be important to the Chinese economy for the foreseeable future. As such, cutting off ties will obligate both to a military buildup. Russia will have to seek new customers and China will have to source these same minerals elsewhere.”

Let’s say that as the DPRK’s involvement in the war in Ukraine drags on, Kim Jong-Un exhibits more and more erratic behavior, leading President Xi Jingping to decide a regime change is in order. To that end, he and his loyalists debate a military invasion of the DPRK, with Xi Jingping announcing his intention to replace the Kim regime with a compliant puppet government.

On New Year’s Day, 2026, the PRC commences with the military invasion of the DPRK. Russian President Vladimir Putin is obviously not happy about this and proceeds to unload a barrage of economic sanctions on China.

But because of the war in Ukraine, he can’t actually do anything about China’s own operation unless he’s willing to lose the war.

Does this sound out of character for Xi Jingping? If so, what would be the most plausible alternative to my scenario?

FWI: Trump is shot(again) in the head

We all remember the day when Trump took a bullet to the ear on live TV and how much of a crossroads moment it was.

Fast forward to February and while holding a press conference or some other big event, there is another assassination attempt. The shooter takes his chance and the bullet finds it's mark, going through Trumps head as he drops to the floor

Within 3 days it's confirmed that Trump is dead and the hunt is on for the modern Garvilo Princip

1)Whats the reaction from countries like Canada and Panama who were in Trumps cross hairs for expansion?

2)Whats the reaction from people like Putin and Xi?

3)What becomes of MAGA and who steps up to take Trumps place?
