Frisia or Friesland is a coastal region along the southeastern corner of the North Sea, i.e. the German Bight. Frisia is the traditional homeland of the Frisians, a Germanic people who speak Frisian, a language group closely related to the English language. Is there a Frisian name similar to my English first name?

I'm half (West) Frisian through my father who moved overseas after WW2. My surname is Frisian and I was curious if there was a Frisian version of Andrew, which supposedly means "manly". I would ask my dad but he is dead and I don't know my remaining Frisian relatives very well.

Frisian Flag??

Hoi and Moin, since I decided to embrace my Frisian background more the last few weeks, I've asked myself the question... what is the proper flag to go by? Since I'm North Frisian I would sport that flag obviously, but I believe in Frisian unity more.

The flag of Friesland (NL) with the pompebleden would make sense because of the unity symbolism (Seven Sealands (Germany / NL)), but I'm not too sure if its probably just used by Frisians in NL for their province. And dont bother with the "Pan-Frisian"-flag, c'mon nobody uses that.

Thank you in advance :)

Am I Frisian?

Hello,

I recently visited Nordstrand (an island in German North Frisia) with my father and we visited the graves of my great-grandparents (both lived there all their lives), buried in Frisian soil. That really made me think. My family used to live there for generations, they knew nothing apart from Frisia. I don‘t know if they spoke proper Frisian, probably just a local Low German. But up to my dad, who just visited his relatives every now and then later on, all of our family history has taken place on this island. Am I still Frisian? Can I pick up the customs now at age 22 or would that be wannabe? I live in a different city in Northern Germany now, 1h from Frisia. Thx in advance

I am looking for a resident of Frisia to ask him some questions about Frisian culture and autonomy

Hello, my name is Theodoric, I am from Russia. The fact is that now I'm talking to a girl from Frisia, who tells me quite strange things that I would like to double-check with a live native speaker. Could someone help me with this?

Survey about your political worldview (18+; 15-30 mins to complete)

Hello, we are a group of psychology researchers from the University of Kent, UK. It would be a huge help if anyone from any background who is interested would fill out our quick survey (18+ years old only) about your views of politics, society, and more.

Fill out the survey here: https://universityofkent.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8ICkX7mBre5IGpM

We are posting here because we hope to collect responses from a wide range of political perspectives and backgrounds. Please let us know if you would like a summary of your responses in comparison to others once the data collection is complete.

The survey takes 15-30 minutes to complete, and we are happy to respond to any queries or questions. Please private message us to avoid giving away the point of the study to others.

Thanks for your time.

Edit: The survey is now closed! Thank you very much for your time, we will be sure to post the results up here when they're ready.

Help researchers translate words into North Frisian

North Frisian speakers have been historically underrepresented in cultural psychology research. We're looking for 2-3 native speakers to verify translations of English words into North Frisian to help us include North Frisian speakers in an upcoming study by the University of New Hampshire and NYU.

If you are an adult native speaker of North Frisian, you're invited to complete the survey below. The survey takes ~15-20 minutes. All your responses will be kept confidential. As a token of our appreciation, you'll have the option at the end to enter into a lottery to win $25.

Thank you for considering and helping us learn more about North Frisian.

Are the other frisian regions also obsessed with tea, or is that an East Frisian oddity?

Per capita, the East Frisian people drink more tea than any other people group, about 300 litres per person every year.

Arms and armor of Frisia

Hello everyone, I was wondering if there were any identifiers of the arms of armor the Frisian’s used as I am blacksmith and would like to craft historical pieces to pay homage. I have tried looking for pictures from Frisian museums but can’t really find anything, so that being said if anyone could post pic of what they used or can direct that would super useful. Thanks in advance

Is "bikkelspel" played in Frisia?

Bikkelspel (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikkelspel) is a game played with sheep knucklebones in the Netherlands and in Flanders. If you also play the game, what do you call it, and what are the names of the sides (see this for an example, scroll down a bit to see the four sides labeled: https://www.zwinstreek.eu/geschiedenis/heemkundige-kringen/zoeken-in-publicaties/12519-bikkelen-2004-01)?

Deelnemers gezocht

Goeie!

Hans

Could anyone here help me remember the name of this band that sung in Frisian?

They had a sort of pseudo-emo fashion/hair aesthetic but not excessively so (the female singer had thick eyeliner in the music video that I watched and that sort of slightly off-kilter hair).

The first line of the chorus of the song was something like "I'm looking for you" in the English translation (I think it was written as "Ik sjoach dy".)

I'm guessing it was a band from the late 2000s/early 2010s due to the fashion and the video quality that I remember

Thanks!
