The subreddit dedicated to the ethereal subgenre of alternative rock.
Dream Pop is a genre characterized by an overall subdued atmosphere - from the vocals to the melodies - producing a dream-like, sleepy, or spacious feel. As the name suggests, songs are structured around traditionally Pop-sounding progressions, often with a steady though de-emphasized beat and vocals that are lower in the mix and possibly run through effects so as to offer a more ethereal feel.
Band structures are usually pretty straightforward sporting a guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Vocals are a distinguishing element of Dream Pop and can often be viewed predominantly as an instrument, with importance being placed moreso on providing melody and less on the actual lyrics. In addition, it is not uncommon for there to be more than one vocalist, either working in unison or switching off. Women have a very prominent role in this genre in this respect, with acts such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Mazzy Star - among others - having female vocalists.
It is also not uncommon for Dream Pop to be fused with other genres like Shoegaze or Noise Pop. The main distinguishing factors though are that while they all offer a similar, "blanketing" feel, Dream Pop does not rely on "walls of sound" (as in Shoegaze) or heavily distorted, very driving guitars (as in Noise Pop).

The new album opens with “Forever Dreaming” a blissful melody layered over a reworking of one of their older songs, “Redivvus.” Erin Welton’s soprano vocals are clear and her words discernible, harkening back to the band’s earlier material. It’s a warm, slightly anxious love song that’s immediately catchy. The trend continues with “Catch My Canaries,” which starts out as gentle folk-rock before it morphs into an angelic hymn. The following songs, including the excellent title track, are melancholy in tone, boasting strong memorable melodies and gossamer instrumentation, culminating urgent symphonic guitar work of “Scarcity.” “The Dark Space” highlights Welton and Scott Ferrell’s songcraft more than it does the atmospheric soundscapes in their more esoteric material. “The Dark Space” is dreampop with a strong emphasis on the pop side, and is a perfect introduction to the two decades of the band’s material. I made a dreamy, atmospheric playlist of the type of music I like and wanted to share it with other dream pop lovers. Feel free to save / share 🫶 Also if anyone has any song suggestions based on this playlist please let me know! 💞
I absolutely love tamaryn and wanna know other people do too. I become a bigger fan the older I get, starting with Cranekiss when I was 16. her song "Collection" is my new favorite as of late
I really love you'll never get to heaven, and their distinctive dreamy atmospheric vibe they bring to me. But I was wondering if anyone knows anyone similar to them that are not well known? I'm not looking for the usual popular dreampop bands like slowdive, mazzy star, cocteau twins etc. I want to be recommended with underground artists or lesser known artists! who can give me that that dreamy heavenly feeling. ♡
Hi everyone!!
I've been trying to promote and share an indie playlist I made called "Indie Nocturnes", which highlights small indie artists that have songs that give off that "late-night feel". I feel as though making playlists that feature a lot of the indie community and sharing it amongst ourselves really helps get us all some plays, and most importantly, helps us all discover some incredible hidden talent out there!!
I've made a google form we're you all can submit your music so it's a little more streamlined on my end. This way no one gets lost in the comments and everyone gets a shot!! :)
I'm really looking forward to hearing from you all, and I will do my best to listen to every response!! Be sure to follow and give the playlist a listen, I promise there are some amazing artists in there so far!
