Been DJing for over a year, finally got a paying gig

Guys, I'm so excited to tell you this! I'm really close with my grandpa and he's supported me so much while I've been learning to DJ. Well the old man finally died and he wants me to DJ his funeral! He's even going to pay me!!! He said he wants some "old timey music with a good rhythm" so I think I'm going to do a 90's jungle set and mix in some classic vocal samples from songs of the era. Sort of a nod to the "old times" he grew up with but without going so far back that the music is terrible. My only hope is that when I'm blasting Bukem to our whole family, he'll be looking up at me, proud of what his grandkid can do.

Looking for a Ghost Producer

So, I heard you can really elevate your career as a DJ if you can locate a "Ghost Producer" but I'm not exactly sure where to begin?

Can you please tell me which one of the following EMF ghost detectors comes most recommended for DJs who want to locate a top-notch ghost producer?

1. K-II EMF Meter

2. Trifield TF2

3. Ghost Meter Pro

4. RemPod

5. EMF-390

6. MEL Meter

I keep buying gear but I’m not good or famous yet

I’ve spent over $10k on DJ gear and no one is giving me gigs and my DJ sets are still not good. I really want to get to the point where I’m getting gigs and getting laid. How much more do I need to spend?

Not sure what to tell you but this is NOT A QUESTIONS subreddit. This is about making fun of bullshit things in the DJ world. So stop asking stuff.

I haven't been active moderating lately and I see way too many questions here. This place is for jokes. I don't even know why I have to post this as an announcement.

To all self-conscious DJs. Of any gender.

To all self-conscious DJs…

Your introversion belongs anywhere that feels comfortable. Alone or in public. You gravitate to music that is a part of your personality. Look up and acknowledge that people are enjoying listening to your music. You think you're uncool but you're not. It's transparent that DJ skills and taste in music don't translate towards being a good or bad lover, and that's okay. You've gravitated to DJing bc it's a fun hobby and allows you to express yourself, through it you can make friendships that may blossom. You have everything you need. A passion and dedication.

Feel free to dance even if you don't know how. But keep in mind your emotions are valid and we all sometimes trainwreck, you don't have to hide it by moving buttons and switches up and down randomly. But look up and notice the audience doesn't care about small mistakes. If you feel intimidated feel free to keep your head down at your mixing board and remind yourself that the engineering of your equipment is also fascinating, and that could be another passion. Somewhere in the back room, in control of a vital element of an event.

Enjoy yourselves, and keep sharing your music and passion with every dance club.

Afro house is the musical equivalent of edging

It just keeps going on and on and you expect something to happen and it never does

Selector's Law

Whenever you are DJing an event like a birthday, corporate, wedding, etc. then more than 99%+ of your playlist should be from these charts: https://www.djintelligence.com/charts/DJIntelligenceMostRequestedAll2023.pdf

What you do is go through that entire list and mark off any songs or artists you recognize - it doesn't matter if you recognize it because you didn't like it. Anything that you recognize - you buy. If you aren't getting paid then just load all those tracks into Spotify and let it DJ the party for you and enjoy yourself. Practice setting up your gear and your MC/Crowd work.

That is your playlist for these types of events. There really isn't any room for discussion, this is just sort of the 'rule' and end of story.

The other 1% of tracks you play? Those are ones that the event coordinator specifically requested that don't happen to be on the chart.

It is a rule, you can break the rule if you want but you better really know what you are doing. You should know the 'rules' of the game well in order to know when it is 'safe to break them'.

There is a reason why I got a lot of upvotes and have the valued contributor tag here.
