I m 14m and in Chennai. I m really interested but can't find or get to know about competition in Chennai? Anyone who knows could U say where u get to know from?
who wants to do a practice round tomorrow?
btw, this post isn’t me dogging on my partner. okay maybe it is. i just want thoughts and opinions on what i need to do in this situation. (also im sorry this is lowkey long
BACKGROUND: this is my second year debating and i take this extremely seriously. i went to state last year (my first year) and this year i would love to make it to finals and possibly go to nats. i was trained by two 2x nats qualifiers, so i’d like to say i know what im doing and what i want to do with my time debate.
ACTUAL STORY: so this year i have a new partner due to my old partners family conflicts (which sucks because her and i really worked together). let’s call my new partner M. from the very beginning of the school year (august) she’s been nonchalant. she’s only my partner since she was the only one who didn’t say they wanted to do LD (my school’s debate program is very small. about 7 people). i’ve been teaching her and explaining everything to the best of my ability, and i thought i was getting to her. for the sept/oct topic, i already had the pro case written from a camp i went to over the summer, therefore for the con case i just wanted M to give me ideas and i showed her how to structure a case. we never ended up doing anything with these cases since conflicts my coach had with one act season, but that didn’t bother me too much. anywho, now it’s the novcember topic and as soon as we got the briefs i told her to start working on it. i’ll be frank, i didn’t get my done until the previous weekend due to conflict with one acts, but i still got it DONE. i’m also 2nd speaker, so i’ve been spending all of my free time this week working on blocks. continuing, i came into class on tuesday and asked M if the case was done. she said that she had been researching, but i interrupted her and said she needed to get the case done asap since we were competing this weekend. i was home sick the next day and she was gone on Thursday for something i don’t know. either way, i still didn’t have the case. it comes to the end of the day, and my coach calls me down and says M turned in her case. it turns out to be ASS. it’s not even a page wrong and there’s multiple blanks. like, ACTUAL blanks. the framework is blank, but it’s still defined. she has no cards and no impacts, and her conclusion is in the middle. this is not at ALL close to any of the cases i’ve sent her to format from. i spend that night finishing blocks and the next morning (friday, day of tournament) i spend my free period completely rewriting her case. right before we leave for the tournament (like, we’re all getting changed into our suits to load up in our suburban) she tells our coach she’s ineligible. obviously, my coach is confused and looks up the list. M literally LIED to our coach just so she couldn’t go and i did all of that work for NOTHING. and she knew how much time i was spending outside of class as well.
i don’t know what to do. if i drop her as a partner, my school no longer has a PF team and i will have to do LD, which i don’t exactly have an interest in since i prefer the schematics of PF. any thoughts or help?
When I tell ppl I'm switching to PF after doing 2 years off policy they always say I will be fine but i actually don't understand what to say in summary or FF I also go to camp so I get my cx cases from camp so I've never had to write my own aff before so I'm also confused on how to make a pro/con for PF and I'm also being partners with a novice who just now joined debate pls help.
If I am PO for both the morning and afternoon session (no one wants to PO lolol), and I want to make a speech by trading off with one of the people from my school for a bill or two-- how exactly would I go about doing that?
I'm in high school and we're going to have a debate in my class. The topic we got chosen was "Does constant use of social media improve communication or worsen it?.
I would've liked to be against it (worsen communication) because there are some pretty strong arguments, some from my own experience, some even based on neuroscience like the fact that we can become more socially awkward if we boil down our interactions to just text, but our teacher put our group in favor (improves communication). So our framework would be to assume ideal conditions on its use, to show the potential that social media has if used correctly. But even by throwing the "constant use of" pointed in the question we already have problems.
What have been your experiences in having to defend a position you don't agree much on?
😨😨😨
I'm pretty new to debating but was always interested in it. I debated a couple of times so far and I see myself running out of things to say or not saying things because I'm worried I might slip out a logical fallacy or say something too controversial. I'm doing high school parliamentary debate right now and have my first competition in about a week. Looking for tips and advice especially when I get assigned to argue for for something I disagree with or against on something I agree with.
there's a "motion to suspend the rules" but are we allowed to do a motion to suspend NSDA rules?
I participate in a debate club after school and to prep for upcoming tournaments, we have done a few scrimmages. This has been beneficial, except my teammates stole my case. My partner and I had each done hours of research to get unique contentions and now he and I feel like our work was all for nothing. I talked to the other duo and they said it just so happened they came up with the same points but I just don’t buy that. Do I make them change it? And also does anyone know what to do that has been through this before?
Tournament tomorrow
I am trying to download Verbatim but the paperless debate website is not opening. Is anyone else facing this issue? Is there another place I can install it?
So I'm a university student and tomorrow is my first debate comp, and I have went through workshops and mocks organize by soc. Any last minute advice please from you people would be appreciated.
I really do but i kind if have a fear of public speaking and failure and i constantly panic and think im going to fail or forget info even during simple 5 minute presentations, Im alsk scared i wont be able to understand the concept of MUN and debate and royally fuck up infront of other people, even if i was able to join im not sure if my time situation is ideal mainly because im busy and a massive procratinator and the debate and MUN clubs at school are already filled up to the rim, im genuinely clueless on what the heck i should do and if i should join at all at this point (i want to join but it also embodies what makes me panic) im really lost here and some advice on what to do would be so helpful. Btw I really just want to join to try and improve research and communication skills and for college (reasons from off the top of my head)
I have a competition TOMORROW and my arguments are absolute shit. I've rewritten them 10 times already and nothing seems to make me content. Any advice on how I could stop feeling this way?
Hey! This is my first year in LD debate as a freshman, but my debate club does not have any LD members (they all graduated). Now, I have no real way of learning debate, and I would like to become better. I have made a debate case for my 2nd novice tournament (Tuesday), but I want to improve it because I am missing quite a few elements.
Does anyone have any LD case (preferably Nov/Dec topic) that I can study and practice off of?
Thanks!!
hi guys,
im a sophomore in highschool and I want to start a debate team at my school, but I don’t know how the structure could look like for a debate team.
can anyone explain how their school runs it? I’m unsure of how to run it or like how it would look like in terms of meetings, how long each meeting is, tournaments, practicing, etc. how would leadership look like as well?
thanks tons!
Hey guys! Recently, I've decided I want to do POI (I have no interp experience whatsoever!). I want to make my program about how divorce affects children way beyond childhood, even though people seem to think that the effects just stop after a certain point. I have a LOT of prose literature, however, I'm struggling to find drama and poems. Does anyone know literature about dealing with divorce from the child's perspective, or even literature about just struggling with change? Thanks!
It feels like I’m behind everyone else and I’m a dumbass who can’t organize their thoughts and can’t connect anything at all. My partner is so much better than me and I know I’m bringing them down. I know we’ve lost rounds solely because of me and that’s a fact. I’ve heard other people say that they should drop me because the difference between our speaker points is crazy and shows our skill gap. I hate this so much because it makes me so ashamed because even though I’ve put in the work, I’m just bad at debate. Even though I do enjoy debate and I do want to win rounds, I’m just bad. It’s not even a matter of experience because we’ve done probably 30+ rounds by now. My speeches are disorganized, shallow, and just flat out bad when we hit a semi good team while my partner has organized, in-depth, and warranted speeches. Yeah, a big part of the problem is my mental but this late in the game? Idk what to do. Am I supposed to just try harder in hopes that I’ll get better or should I just quit before I bring down my partner even more?
I don’t got money and want to improve my debating skills, so far I’ve joined a club for a year but the club meeting time is quite limited so I’d like to read more on how to develop my case structuring.
i just started a club here in columbia sc. i know bp, wsdc. and ap. any places to compete?
I’ve found some good points on the negation but I have nothing on the aff. Please help (T-T)
Im a speech and debate novice at my highschool, i will be doing storytelling at a upcoming event but the book you perform from must not only be a childrens book but also of some relation to native americans, think a folktale adapted in to a children's book. Im lost on what book to do, does anyone have any suggestions.
Does anyone know what browser extension can be used to see how many downloads your uploaded docs on the wiki have?
dm if u wanna practice round tdy
So, I'm part of the representatives for my class to join a debate elimination game or whatever. Our group was told to talk about the Anti-LGBTQ hate bill in our country.
We're on the negative side.
Any advice? (This is gonna be my first time).
Hey yall, I'm trying to open a debate coach for my school in Washington DC. This would be a person that comes to my school from 3:30-5pm that teaches debate.
I was thinking parliamentary debate would be best but do we have to pick one format or could we experiment and skirt around? We're a novice team.
I've been having a hard time finding a debate coach. Where are some places that I could go to?
hey! anyone wanna do a practice round today?
In the past, I used to be so confident in my speech and ability to come up with insane ideas that made sense from time to time. However, after I had terrible experiences with debate competitions teammates, specifically when it came to the second competition, my confidence level plummeted. I felt like a failure, and I started fearing speaking in a debate. I started stuttering, my heart pounds really quickly when I see specific people, and I get so scared I can't even start my speech.
As a result, my teacher was rather concerned about me. He told me "It's as though you met a mental barrier, and you need to get over it somehow, or else you won't ever improve".
Not only that, I feel as though my thinking has become so narrow. I used to be able to think of wonderful ideas, but now, it's as ththough I can only look at the surface of the motions I get. When I want my brain to start processing, or even start thinking, it's as though the cogs in my brain just stops. If it ever starts moving, it becomes really slow. What do I do? I can't keep stagnating like this.
I'm a novice and about to go to my first meet; I saw some speeches and saw that some were extremely formal while others felt alot more simpler and sometimes more "fun." Any advice on tone for these speeches and stuff would be great
