i've never been able to play beyond the chieftain difficulty because i can't generate money. i recently read the manual and i've begun reading the strategy guide, but every game i fall into the same funnel:
i've tried using caravans, but most of my cities demand the same stuff. i can't send them to other civs because i'm expanding too slowly to encounter them. i've tried sending caravans on triremes but even with the lighthouse wonder they get lost at sea. i have taxes set so high to compensate for expenses that discoveries take 30-40 turns. changing government doesn't help.
can someone tell me which piece of the puzzle i'm missing?
There has to be a way since the prebuilt scenarios have custom names
So i'm looking for civilization 2 for someone and that person whould like to pay for the game if possible.
Would you guys happen to know if there is a place where it is possible? And if that ain't possible then maybe you could come with a place to download it.
Thanks
I recently completed what turned out to be a fascinating challenge of Civ 2 Gold. The goal: win the space race on level Deity with not only just a single city, but a single square in the ocean. It took a few tries, but incredibly, it's possible. I just landed my colonists in 1926, a date I did not think was possible before making these attempts. I deliberately picked a location with four whales to put my city, but otherwise didn't edit an existing map. Anyways, I was shocked by how great this city actually was and thought I'd share a unique way to play a quick challenge game.
Where could I find this game I haven't been able to play since 20+ years!? i keep getting bogged down with links but very unsure whether i should download from said links or not... any help would be welcome!
I used to have it on disk but lost it years ago, trying to find it online with all the scenarios but I just can't. Any help?
When a regular game reaches its conclusion, in game year 2020, select the option to keep playing. Then toggle cheat mode. The Edit Technologies, and Take All technologies from each remaining nation.
From then on, all nations will have advanced buildings, like SDI, Solar Power Plants, and advanced units like Stealth Bombers, but with no way to rebuild anything. Nations will have the same options as turn 1, to build barracks, settlers and warriors.
I suspect two major things to affect game play.
1 - Major AI nations usually switch to Fundamentalist governments after they've acquired all technologies, then bunker down and try to take over the world with their stupid fanatics. Diplomacy becomes just cease fires, broken cease fires, and rotating alliances. And yes, i can personally vouch for the Orwellian three-nation war that /u/Lycerius made famous.
By removing all tech, Fundamentalist regimes would be overthrown in favour of systems with better research, but only as they are discovered! At the time the technologies are removed, the Government systems stay in place. But if you overhtrow your Fundamentalist government, then have no technology anymore, you will have to settle for Despotism until you discover a better way. But in this scenario, you should have libraries, universities and maybe even the SETI wonder.
2 - diplomacy would open up again because nations could resume the technology trade.
I know it’s a small sub right now, but anyone (either of you two) keen on a round?
I haven’t played in 10+ years but love it so much.
Would that still work with your u/brakiri edited game files?

I was hooked on Civ 2 the first time i played it in 1997. It is still my favourite computer/video game. Mid 90s games are perfect for me.
It wasn't until 2008 that i discovered you can go into the program files and start messing with the game.
I started subtly, renaming units, making some more powerful, making Battleships carry two ground units. As i got the hang of it, i created the tech advance Giant Monsters, that let you build a Godzilla unit that roared when it attacked. I changed the flags on the city icons, giving them stripes or bars.
The game developers warn you tho, that changing too much will cause the game to behave strangely. Well i made so many changes to the unit/building/tech specs, that the game turned into a worm. Other programs on the PC started crashing, so i had to completely uninstall Civ 2.
From then on, i hav been methodical with my edits. I keep a few saved versions so that if i screw up, i don't hav to restart from scratch.
Since 2016, i hav been playing the Multiplayer Gold Edition for Mac. I am still editing. I started documenting it the other night, to really measure out how the alterations effect game play. Then i started this sub to share it, and hopefully attract a handful of cohorts that are still doing this.
I've added links in the sidebar to free abandonware downloads, windows and mac.
